play00:16

My little brother

play00:18

was very good at a few things from a very young age.

play00:20

The first thing he was really good at was making everybody laugh without trying.

play00:25

Like the one time I told him

play00:26

he should have a little bit of protein after a workout.

play00:29

He got all excited because he thought I said "poutine."

play00:31

(Laughter)

play00:33

The second thing he was good at was eating large quantities of food.

play00:38

Come dinner time,

play00:39

it wasn't uncommon for him to outeat most of the adults at the table.

play00:43

Now, as you may have guessed, as a five-foot-nothing little boy,

play00:46

there is, in fact, a downside to regularly outeating full-grown men.

play00:51

At just 11 years old, I could already see that, if nothing else changed,

play00:55

my little brother was headed for an adolescent life

play00:58

littered with teasing and unhealthy eating.

play01:01

As his older brother, I wanted to do something about it.

play01:04

As a nutrition, or kinesiology student, with an intense interest in nutrition,

play01:10

I knew that I had to do something about it.

play01:12

Initially, I wasn't sure how, but I was determined to find a way.

play01:17

Now, in March of 2013,

play01:19

I broke my leg while I was walking to class,

play01:22

and I slipped on some ice.

play01:24

Yes, that is the whole story.

play01:25

I was walking, there was some ice.

play01:27

Poof, broken leg.

play01:30

No lives saved.

play01:31

No purses returned.

play01:33

No cool story to tell.

play01:37

Little did I know as I lay there in that quickly melting puddle of ice,

play01:40

waiting for the ambulance to arrive,

play01:43

that this moment would forever change the life of my little brother.

play01:49

After I had a surgery

play01:51

to attach a small titanium plate and a few screws onto my fibula,

play01:54

I was given two crutches,

play01:56

and told not to put any weight on my leg for two months.

play02:00

This posed a unique problem,

play02:02

as there was still plenty of snow and ice on the ground.

play02:05

And I still had two months left of class,

play02:07

spread out over one of the largest campuses in the country.

play02:10

So, with that in mind, I made a decision

play02:13

that any hard-working student in my position would do.

play02:16

And I obviously decided to stop going to classes.

play02:19

(Laughter)

play02:20

Now, with all this free time from studying at home,

play02:24

I had finally figured out how I was going to help my little brother.

play02:27

I knew that what he needed to do was very simple in theory,

play02:30

but very difficult in practice.

play02:33

What he needed to do was change his eating habits.

play02:38

From experience

play02:39

I knew the things that he needed to change, and the things that he didn't.

play02:45

The problem was that communicating this through somebody else

play02:49

would most likely just end up like the childhood game of telephone.

play02:52

The message gets passed along,

play02:54

but with little misunderstandings and misinterpretations along the way.

play02:58

There's not much left of the original message,

play03:00

and everybody's just left confused.

play03:02

And my little brother's eating habits are left unchanged.

play03:06

So, keeping that in mind, I made one of the best decisions of my life,

play03:10

and I decided to move back home for the next two weeks,

play03:12

and make every single meal that my little brother would eat,

play03:15

educating him about proper nutrition along the way.

play03:19

While I was at home,

play03:21

in the kitchen, I often found myself awkwardly trying to maneuver

play03:24

holding on to two crutches, hot pans, and sharp knives.

play03:29

It wasn't very easy.

play03:33

I also had to make sure to take little breaks every few minutes

play03:37

to make sure that the swelling in my ankle wouldn't become unbearable.

play03:41

Now, after just two weeks,

play03:43

not only were the results phenomenal,

play03:45

but they were as a result of a strategy that anybody can use.

play03:49

The reason we were able to see such dramatic and positive results,

play03:53

which I'm very excited to share with you later,

play03:55

is that we changed his environment to match his goal.

play03:58

We made his environment work for him, instead of against him.

play04:02

This simply meant replacing all of the bad options with healthy ones.

play04:08

Making this uncomplicated adjustment

play04:13

enabled us to easily transform his nutrition,

play04:16

from the standard American diet,

play04:17

ironically referred to from its acronym SAD,

play04:21

to wholesome and nutritious without a hitch.

play04:24

Because of the planning this wasn't the least bit difficult to do.

play04:27

When you remove the unhealthy options,

play04:30

wholesome and nutritious food becomes both plan A, and plan B.

play04:35

The beauty of this solution

play04:37

is that it takes willpower almost completely out of the equation.

play04:40

Quite simply, if it's not there, you can't eat it.

play04:44

An added bonus to this strategy

play04:47

is if there's no chips on the counter calling your name,

play04:50

it's likely that you'll just forget about them,

play04:52

and completely avoid the feeling of deprivation all at once.

play05:03

Little bit of a brain block.

play05:09

This may sound a little bit too simple to be true,

play05:13

but I assure you it's not.

play05:15

When you remove the barriers to your success --

play05:18

in my little brother's case, unhealthy food --

play05:20

and you replace, or you pave the way, barrier-free,

play05:24

the road to success becomes a much smoother ride.

play05:28

So set up your environment

play05:29

so that it works for you, instead of against you.

play05:33

This works well for any goal.

play05:34

For my little brother, I was the environment.

play05:37

I made all of his food, gave him the right snacks,

play05:40

and answered all of his questions.

play05:41

But what would that have looked like if I wasn't there,

play05:44

and how can you make this work for you?

play05:46

Well, to be successful,

play05:50

you have to minimize the difficult decisions being made.

play05:54

Say, for example, you walk into the lobby,

play05:57

and, on the left of those tables, is delicious chocolate chip cookies,

play06:01

squares, and everything you like.

play06:03

On the right side, is fresh fruit and vegetables,

play06:06

vibrant colors, chopped up nicely, they're crunchy and juicy.

play06:10

You've been sitting in here for two hours, so you're starving,

play06:13

you have a choice to make.

play06:14

Should you choose option A on the left,

play06:17

or should you choose the wholesome nutritious broccoli on the right?

play06:23

Given this scenario,

play06:27

I think it would be very hard for most of us

play06:30

to resist the temptation of option A.

play06:35

This is a real-life situation,

play06:37

and it's one that happens all the time.

play06:44

It's very important, because of that reason.

play06:48

So when you remove the barriers to your success,

play06:53

it will just become a little bit easier

play06:56

for you to not have to make that hard decision

play06:59

in the first place.

play07:01

Here's how you can make this strategy work for yourself.

play07:04

Start off by finding out what your personal trigger foods are,

play07:07

and make a promise to not keep them in your house anymore.

play07:10

So that when the time comes,

play07:12

the decision has already been made for you.

play07:14

Now, that's not to say you can never have these foods again.

play07:18

If you really want one, you can always just go to the store, and buy one,

play07:22

or you can keep it

play07:24

so that you're only having them at special events, such as this.

play07:28

Just don't keep a stash underneath the cupboard

play07:31

if you know that they're going to be an issue for you.

play07:33

That's how you make your environment work for you, instead of against you.

play07:38

That's how you make healthy eating

play07:40

the default, and not the exception.

play07:44

So if you have a personal goal of eating better,

play07:47

go home, find all of your junk food,

play07:50

and a neighbor that you're not particularly fond of,

play07:53

and give it all to them.

play07:56

The basis of this strategy worked for my little 11-year-old brother,

play07:59

and it can certainly work for you too.

play08:01

Let me just finish off

play08:03

by sharing the final results of my little brother's lifestyle change.

play08:07

Let me also just point out,

play08:09

that I had one main rule that I wanted to follow

play08:12

with the change.

play08:13

At no point,

play08:14

did I want my 11-year-old brother to feel hungry, or deprived.

play08:18

Here's how that worked out.

play08:20

After the first seven days, he had lost five pounds.

play08:25

After the second week, it was eight pounds.

play08:28

But it didn't just stop there.

play08:30

I went back to write exams, and he kept going.

play08:34

After 20 days, it was ten pounds,

play08:37

and, by 36 days,

play08:39

he had averaged half a pound a day

play08:42

to top it off at 18 pounds lost.

play08:48

(Applause)

play08:50

[Make your environment work FOR YOU]

play08:52

If everybody had their environment working for them, instead of against them,

play08:55

my little brother's level of success would be the norm.

play09:01

My hope is that one day it will be.

play09:04

Thank you.
