DON’T TELL MOTHER PHIL!! BACK TO THE MASSEY 1200
Summary
TLDRFarmer Phil is restoring a vintage yellow Massey Ferguson 1200 tractor. In this video, he shows the freshly painted yellow chassis and starts disassembling components to inspect the brakes and rear axle. Although waiting on some parts held up progress for a while, the brake parts are now rebuilt with new seals, liners and discs. With the axle housing finally relined and repaired, they can start reassembling the rear end. The goal is to have the restored vintage tractor completed by the end of March for an annual vintage tractor show.
Takeaways
- 😊 The 1200 tractor was originally yellow when purchased, so they decided to repaint it yellow to match its history
- 👷♂️ They split the back end of the tractor to check the brake system and do any necessary repairs
- 🔧 The brake calipers, balls, and discs were in good condition after being serviced previously
- ⛏️ The differential cover was removed to inspect the internals, which looked in decent shape
- 🚜 The wheel hub was disassembled to replace the seals and bearings due to leaks and wear
- 🛠 They thoroughly cleaned out old brake dust and contamination from inside the hubs
- ⏳ Rebuilding progress was delayed while waiting several weeks for a critical part to be re-lined
- 🎨 The next steps will involve continued reassembly, painting, and finishing touches on the tractor
- 🤞 The goal is to complete the restoration in time to use the tractor for an upcoming plowing event
- 👍 The series sponsor, Conny, provided many original seals, bearings, and other replacement parts
Q & A
What color was the 1200 originally painted and what color did they repaint it?
-The 1200 was originally yellow when it first came to the farm. They repainted it yellow to keep its history and make it stand out since most 1200s are red.
Why did progress on the restoration slow down over January?
-A part on the inside of the power take-off was damaged and had to be sent away to be skimmed and relined, which caused delays while waiting for that part.
What did they find when they split the brakes on the back axles?
-The brakes were in great shape with brand new brake balls that showed no wear. The brake discs were worn down somewhat but still had life left.
What local dealer were they getting some original seals and parts from?
-They were able to get some original seals and parts from their local Massey Ferguson dealer called Johnston's.
Who was helping source parts and providing expertise on the 1200/1250?
-Someone named Massey Dave from the UK who has a YouTube channel dedicated to restoring 1200s and 1250s.
What’s the new goal for finishing the restoration?
-They want to have the restoration done to take the tractor to the Lifford Plowing event towards the end of March.
What was the cause of the rust inside the wheel hub?
-The rust was likely caused by the tractor sitting unused in one spot for at least 10 years without proper oiling.
What company was sponsoring the restoration videos?
-The videos were being sponsored by a company called RTE.
Who all was working on the restoration?
-Father Phil, his son, and some others named Lee and Cony were working on restoring the tractor.
What did they find when they opened up the brake hub?
-They found a damaged bearing that was making noise and would need to be replaced along with the seals.
Outlines
😊 Introducing the Video and Painting the 1200 Yellow
Father Phil introduces himself and explains they are painting the 1200 tractor yellow to match its original color from when they first got it. It looks good freshly painted yellow and they are excited to reassemble it.
🛠️ Splitting the Back End to Service the Brakes
They split the back end, axles, and diffs to check the brake calipers, discs, balls, and seals. The brakes look good after a clean out and didn't need much work. They discuss the possibility of changing to wet brakes but will leave it with the existing dry brakes.
⛽️ Cleaning and Replacing Seals on the Hub
They split open the hub to replace seals that were leaking. The bearing is rough and will need replacing. Father Phil entertains himself managing a fire while Lee works on the hub. The rust inside indicates it was sitting unused for a long time.
⚙️ Reassembling the Back End After Repairs
With all repairs and refurbishing now complete, they are ready to start reassembling the back end. This piece they were waiting on held them up for a while but now everything has been fully disassembled, checked, and fixed. Next is more painting before final reassembly.

Transcripts
Father Phil came up with good brain
waves get mothers ashm but don't tell me
mother hello everybody my name is farmer
Phil and in today's video we're back at
the 1200 Le has been painting while
we're away so hopefully let's see a
yellow
1200
show show you're
the face you're
the oh
and it is now yellow so is Gan well it's
painted a yellow that's the first layer
and it looks there is some Shine off it
I know people a lot of people say
painted red but we've always we'd always
decided she was going yellow that was
always the plan with it does look good
they're now painted it' be great to see
it all back
together but that his MF industrial
yellow he's a right job doing it there
now bloody
spotless so for those of you wondering
why yellow the tractor in his previous
life was yellow wasn't come out of
factory yellow but he came to us yellow
and we want to keep it with its history
there's lots of red 1200s out there
there's no yellow on not that we know of
anyways part of that as well the tractor
was imported to Ireland it's registered
as a yellow tractor you could change it
why it's just we get very hard to
imagine it not being yellow yellow just
leaves it special for us so it does just
brings back those memories and we are
back in the
shed I think it's been
two 3 weeks 3 weeks Thursday since we
last filmed well not since last film but
since
the chassis was painted yellow so now
today's job or what we're going at now
is Father Phil wants to split the back
end fully so take the half axles off the
back end so you can check the brakes out
make sure they're good so just have the
teleport have to go in lift it up take
the wheels off let it down then take off
both sides see how that goes but anyways
I'm going to stick the camera on time
lapse and yeah we get this
[Music]
split
look how they shine looking at them
you're
not and now the half
axles are
off someone might give up on me but
anyways there's the
diff diff looks
good so what are you doing going to
split the take the look at the brakes
that's what we're doing brakes are in
underneath that then yeah we're
replacing them seeds anyway yeah because
I'm not I'm not changing her back to wet
brakes now yeah we leave her
dry not know the dry brake if they're
serviced yes possibility that the balls
that work the calipers has a flat side
yes that causes the braks to drag or the
caliper is
war it can be e there are and then braks
might me draging at all but kind of t
hold to Christmas would be as well off
the whole way down so what's talk what
20 minutes basically it's piece of mind
now should be a Nick here here yeah
there
temper she shouldn't be too she
shouldn't be temp
been over another
FL she is
loose
wow very has stuff in it oh
yeah I see more
seals sometimes you to take caliper
something get
out well what's it look
like need new have break discs in
here they're quite quite well
down there's another behind them
I don't know how far compared to a new
one they
go they weren't pulling in a while
anyways no there there's a fair bit of
beef left on them someone has to break
done in that that's should call hold on
hold
on have this road not not road with it
uh no I might you don't get the probably
have to you might have to take the whole
thing you on calier is very good
looking
you take it yeah yeah
going wigg wi
wi
there spring
off
that's
it
on brand new balls look good brand new
some of those are brakes done look at
them yeah brilliant shape balls get a
flat side in the MTH or iing to make
it no they're fine AR they yeah they br
new yeah no F nothing on
them no no just a good clean
out no in really nice to
yeah should just lift up
there the fingers yeah now they're just
just about away them discs some put new
calipers in didn't
put work on look nothing I often seen
them to be
Beed
oh good clean
out
sheu she stuck on the
[Music]
SC the brecks have't been pulling
[Music]
in a longer to push
in rest at the back
end
there's the
diff
lock hard know looking at she
getting closest to the
rivits maybe side yeah you getting close
to the rits there yeah them not
much don't understand why one's bonded
one's Riv you think both of them the
same unless somebody's been in there and
only replace one of them get one out
maybe that was a reason otherwise brecks
are absolutely brilliant just clean
up full clean up you couldn't ask for
better there if we get her and stuff it
in there and just get a Hoover or
something yeah she's no lash Master we
get end of it just the House St now we
want to put a mask and yeah this the the
day that was buil she be somebody's run
the brakes out over the stage I've never
cleaned that
out so another day another night and
we're at the 1200 again the F fill is
cleaning up
the can't think of the right word
basically the opposite end of that from
the other side for the other axle so
just getting ready to try and put new
seals and liners and stuff back into the
brakes for going back
we're still waiting on a bit for the
back end it's looking nice going to take
another week nothing we can do about it
just it is what it is so we're just
going to try and do as much as we can
it's kind of going to hold us up quite a
bit now
um so yeah it's just not ideal I'm going
to get the gun and just split them apart
so just open up two balls and open up
two balls so not a lot into it but
anyways yeah it's just
at the L now with that in the
back so Father Phil came up a good brain
wave so have to clean up this old break
dust inside the The Hub there I say get
mothers
[Music]
ashm
you oh sure why not but don't tell me
mother something along them lines
there's your yellow
brush look at the
scenario over
here over here away and I have my bit
done see yeah don't tell mother don't
tell so while myself and Le are working
Father Phil brought out off off his
chair out of the
house managing the fire managing the
fire
man yeah so mean they are just splitting
the Hub there to change SEALS or change
the Hub just
leaking just getes we're just going
over but um yeah Father Phil is keeping
himself
occupied yeah you can
see well that's so this Le in there
somewhere so we have it open there have
to split it now when we get oil up and
see what it's
like you won't get for us no no no have
to get what happens if the fire goes out
we're going to have to get a quick eject
I going to have to put a quick eject on
to see or something what do you need a
chair foring that hard you should need a
chair
here you know for a minute now what are
you looking for it's on the fence you w
play it twice we should have a lane here
somewhere can
CH here
that's catch that cuz that's just going
to fall
off have this your not that
heavy is a tree in her or two three
three gears in her she's new
or Rusty in there hey huh that Rusty in
there the don't know whether you see it
or
not but you can see the line of rust
there as that's the sign she must have
been sitting for a long time and that
was wasn't r that wasn't didn't get oil
we know she was sitting at Le 10 years
of one spot yeah hanging so we just have
the planetary gears at a hub out
and she's rocking y looks like the baron
is
gone rough very rough can hear the
noises making there good thing about the
mic it can bring it right to it so
yeah not just the seal but the bearon
has to be done
there suppose it's all kind of the one
anyways but or is it in them yeah no no
no no no the be n be and N it's not it's
not the one
thing a track
no track but don't it's broke that has
the end off the
now no it's not that's not that must it
not SL down in that must pinch
it oh on the outside of that which pinch
pinches it
then
there must be a
track once that's it's in
in like that and then slides down over
and holds it it in that's it in
the that's the
beon stand enough be doesn't feel too
bad but there's a lot of metal in there
huh oh watch you can see the
shine clean out your
s so is that hit then that's it you so
all the fuss you were making well I was
told it was a big nut had to be open I
don't see no n to be opened I thought
that just goes down and that them two
little knocking color holds it in that's
a so yeah I
[Music]
never sing drag them down
down but they won't don't get awake and
I get out of their
head and they
[Music]
[Applause]
can and we are back in the workshop and
as you seen there I think the last time
we filmed we were just after taking off
this Hub so while I was doing other
things H father Fe F Fe Father Phil and
Lee have a put back together so new bear
new SE
yeah new seals new seals in the brakes
new brakes calipers are really good yeah
perfect and you put a new new seal on
the outer side new bearing and a new
seal here and a new seal there yes no
sorry there and dry brakes so brakes are
brilliant we put new discs in there the
old
discs um yeah yeah as
new going to start working on putting
back the back end together the bit that
has been holding us up all over kind of
from Christmas till now this is a here
yeah yeah that's it there so yeah it's
now coming towards the end of January
what have we done for the whole month of
January basically just the P right but
you see there and we let yeah let the P
so the reason we kind of didn't get a
lot done well it was slowly kicked off
we had a couple of days rting at that
but the big one was this here the inside
of that was shook so it was the EAS way
of putting it so we got it sent off we
got it skimmed relined and all good so
now she just sits down onto that what is
that that's the that's for the oil feied
for the pack pack yeah it's the oil feed
for the pack think your pack yeah ipto
independent power take
off I so that is what that's for and
that's was held us up just getting that
bit done so there's a bit of waiting for
bits to come and sleeves and whatnot but
it's done and now it's going back
together M that's where we're at at the
minute I think I have enough footage for
this video it's basically what we done
for from when it got painted till now
the bit that was holding
Backle yeah so now now we're now now
we're on the on the back together
Everton has been ripped Everton took out
something was working yeah ever ever has
been done now there there's nothing else
to rip is that literally nothing every
square inch of the tractor has been
taken apart now and
check so it's just start putting it back
together and get more paint on so
that'll be the next lock of videos will
be painting on that so big thanks to
Cony for sponsoring today's video
they're sponsoring all the 1200 videos
the brakes we got off quties there some
of some of the and some of the sees and
that and actually the probably the
biggest surprise about the whole lot is
sometimes we're going to local Massy
dealer Johnston's and F Phil would be
looking for this seal or looking for
that bear and yeah and they had they'd
have it and they'd have the original
parts isn't it yeah original scenes yeah
original like but they used in in the
lot of the series have
them but there wasn't there specific
stuff like C engine mounts and oh we got
they come through they came through the
and we got lift cables and stuff at the
very start now yeah before we got in
with Dave chamber you about to show the
box of
stuff sitting over
there on the on the
[Music]
oh so yeah and then there's a HIIT we
got half da Chamberland then as well in
the UK if you want to check him out he's
his own YouTube channel Massi Dave where
he's doing up 1200s and 1250s and I
don't think there's at the minute is he
and I don't think there's much the man
doesn't know about a 1200 or 1250 but
anyways we're going to leave it at that
for today's video the new deadline is no
who nervous nervous and saying because I
want to have it done for lford plowing
which is toward the end of March and
hopefully have the five for and all the
PS we have oh yeah but sure hopefully
there be no more fingers crossed anyways
we're going to leave it at that for
today's video hope you enjoyed today's
video seeing the yellow paint going on
and it's actually quite hard to remember
all it's been done because it's
basically been stretched out over a
month this video but hopefully we'll get
back into a weekly routine of having a
video a week of how we get done we are
at slurry at the minute but by myself
and Father Phil away Lee is here and
he's tipping away at bits doing bits in
the Ard and trying to keep progress
tipping along here too so hopefully
fingers crossed gra behind the scenes
fingers crossed we we'll have her done
for the end the March first
any I'm going to leave it that for
today's video as always please like And
subscribe to Channel videos every
Tuesday Thursday and Sunday that's it
from us good luck
