Transcripts
hey guys welcome back to clownfish TV
this is neon I'm not here with geeky
Sparkles I'm going to talk about digital
art and Ai and procreate and I have to
give a hat tip to our friend Sarah who
who sent this over I did not
realize that there was so much drama
going on with so many of these uh
digital illustration apps now and
procreate has apparently taken a stand
against generative AI it's actually a
very good time I guess to take a stand
against generative AI if you are
catering primarily to artists who are
afraid of losing their jobs to
generative Ai and uh you know we've got
Adobe blowing themselves up we've
covered that and this seems to be a
direct response to the Adobe situation
that procreate is not going to use
generative AI now look I'm not and I've
said before obvious obviously obviously
if you've seen some of our thumbnails
I'm not completely against generative AI
however you know our thumbnails are
disposable right it's a very disposable
thing it's like okay I don't want to use
a copyrighted image and I need to get an
idea across and you know whatever like
people watch our videos and you know a
day or two later that nobody's watching
it it's disposable it's like a like a
newspaper right that's that's kind of
our our content the majority of our
content um so you know for me I like I
don't feel any uh particular guilt over
that because it's not like I was going
to go hire an artist or you know I'm
certainly not going to spend you know 10
hours drawing an illustration myself for
a video that's going to be viable for
like a day or two um but as far as like
more permanent things I think uh
generative AI is definitely becoming
more more of an issue especially if it's
scraping content now I don't think
there's any avoiding it I think it's
it's here you know it's here uh for
better for worse but I think artists are
trying to delay it as long as as
possible and they certainly don't want
their stuff scraped uh to be used to
train AI art machines and that is what's
going on that's what adobe's come under
Fire for is basically sneaking terms of
service into uh its uh most recent
version of of the
language that says that you basically
give them right to Snoop around in your
f and that they can you know use your
use your stuff to train their generative
AI which is so weird like we're we're
selling applications primarily to
creatives and we're basically selling
them an application that can now do all
the painting and the photo work itself
yeah it's just a very weird thing but uh
let's talk about procreate anyway uh I
do have procreate I don't use it very
much I do have a very large iPad I
actually find it harder especially for
work like this detailed I find it hard
harder to work on an iPad than I do to
work on a big ass XP pen tablet which is
mostly what I use is like a 27in tablet
because I'm blind as a bat and it's also
about the size of a drawing board but
there are a lot of people out there that
that swear by procreate so let's let's
talk about this and see what they have
to say about it they're they're uh
trying to tap into that market as is
Affinity uh Creative Suite they're not
using generative AI to the best of my
knowledge now I think if people want to
add a plugin that maybe does some AI
stuff and they're cool with it and the
terms of service are clear I think
that's okay right um but let's let's uh
look at this article this come from Tech
crunch before we get into it any further
Please Subscribe for more pop culture
news views and rants guys you'll get a
WooHoo for me woohoo no my woohoo are
not as good as geeki and I'm not going
to replace her with generative AI so
don't worry about that um yeah this is
coming from Tech crunch procreate takes
a stand against generative AI vows to
never incorporate the tech into its
products they vow never to do that so
guys if 5 years from now they're like
hey procreate AI is is on the way you
can point point this out and say hey
yeah you said you weren't going to do
that popular iPad design at procreate
it's coming out against generative AI
they said and it has vowed to never
introduce generative AI features into
its products the company said on its
website that although machine learning
is a compelling technology with a lot of
Merit the current path that generative
AI is on is on is wrong for its platform
um yeah there's been a lot of backlash
to Adobe and Adobe was kind of the
canary in at coal Min like hey what
happens if if we just have you know the
this software suite that we've been
selling to creatives what if it just
creates its own content and we don't
even need the artists anymore it's like
well who are you selling this to then
you know so it's just good business to
be like yeah we're going to protect
artists jobs because that literally is
our client base that's literally our
customer base procreate goes on to say
it's not chasing a technology that is a
threat to human creativity even though
this may make the company seem at risk
of being left behind procreate CEO James
Cuda released an even stronger statement
against the technology on X on Monday I
think he swears let's let's uh let's
listen to this are we rolling there you
go you've been asking us about AI you
know I usually don't like getting in
front of the camera I prefer that
products speak for themselves I really
[ __ ] hate journey of AI I don't like
what's happening in the industry I don't
like what it's doing to artists we're
not going to be introducing any
generative AI into our products okay our
products are always designed and
developed with the idea that a human
will be creating something you know we
don't exactly know where this story is
going to go or How It Ends but we
believe that we're on the right path
supporting human
creativity all right well I think I
think that's a I think that's a pretty
uh a pretty good statement coming from
someone who literally creates a
product that is sold to creatives to be
like hey guys yeah we're not going to
replace you uh if for no other reason
regardless of of whether or not he
actually believes it if for no other
reason it's not good business right it's
not good business to create a product to
eliminate your customer
paase uh the company stance has
attracted widespread praise from digital
artists online many of whom are unhappy
with the way other digital art and
illustration apps have embraced the
technology that would be again Adobe
David Tunes here says if you're
wondering whether to use Photoshop or
procreate remember this Adobe overpriced
monthly subscription generative AI
features you can't remove procreate
onetime purchase and the CEO said I
really effing hate generative AI uh back
let's see in 2022 clip Studio paint
walked back its plans to release an
image generator tool after facing
backlash from its user base yeah so clip
Studio that's another one your your user
base it's all artists It's All Digital
artists right now I can see some value
in maybe AI apps optional AI apps that
speed up some of the more tedious stuff
especially like an
animation uh you know some kind of like
in you know in-betweener program like
doing some tweening or something like
that that would be like you could just
do the key frames and it would generate
the in between frames for you hopefully
not add a bunch of extra fingers in the
process you know what I'm saying
something like that be useful um
flatting Comics I think would be useful
uh you know stuff like that you know I
mean artists have already been using uh
you know perspective tools and stuff
like that which I know some people were
like well that's cheating using
perspective tools that's cheating uh
using like halone buildings and stuff
like but like that's been going on for a
long time in comics and manga and it
does save time I mean you can either
drop in a building I mean if if you've
got you've got something happening in
like New York City it's easier to just
like Drop in a New York skyline that is
the actual New York skyline and do like
a half te pattern or something than it
is to like draw the entire New York City
skyline like in the amount of time it
would take you you could draw like two
or three more comic Pages you know what
I'm saying so little things like that
like I I don't have I personally don't
have a problem with um artists have been
using references for a while I know
there's a whole big discussion now on
whether or not artists should use any 3D
assets or whatever but this is actually
very common in manga uh especially when
you're dealing with real world vehicles
or technology or something like that but
you you do have to make it convincing it
should be used as reference and not just
be like d I don't think it should be
dropped right into the the page or
whatever because it it really takes
people out of it if it's a totally
different style but that's not AI either
but that is an assist and I think I
think that is the place for AI in the
workflow is as an
assistant uh you know something helpful
to help you speed up your creativity
your productivity not replacing entire
art departments you know because some
bean counter is like well I can just you
know plug in some prompts and get
whatever I want it's like n you still
need somebody dead to oversee it
right uh this is Adobe which arguably
has the most popular Suite of design
tools has released several generative AI
features into its products in addition
Adobe recently came under Fire after its
updated terms of service seem to imply
that it would train AI models on users
content the company later had to clarify
it doesn't train AI models on customers
content yeah a time when digital art
platforms are embracing AI Elum right
it's interesting to see a popular app go
against the crowd again it's in their
own best interests I mean I'm not saying
he doesn't believe it I believe he does
believe it but it is in your own best
interest as a company that literally
sells a product to digital
creatives and we know where they're at
with this right now you know this is not
a good time to say hey guys we're just
going to let yeah procreate yeah it's
just going to it's just gonna draw by
itself doesn't even need you it's gonna
it's gonna uh mine Bitcoin or something
when you you put your iPad to sleep it's
going to mint mint all of your work into
nfts without your knowledge or some
crazy [ __ ] you know but um yeah it's
it's going to be really interesting to
see the push back on this and if it has
any effect because I mean we've been
talking about the uh uh the animation
industry and the unions and one of their
their big Hang-Ups is AI I think they're
afraid of being replaced by AI but I
think AI does become
a tool and that's where I'm at with it
where I think there is a difference
between using it as a tool and I think
it has Merit and value as a tool but it
should not be a replacement
for actual creatives um unfortunately in
it being a tool it actually does
eliminate some positions you know again
I was talking about you know in between
animators well they get gone because you
don't need them any more right uh
flatters and Comics well they get gone
because you don't need them anymore uh
because you know it can it can handle
that can do that work for you uh but the
same thing happened
with you know letters in comics and in a
lot of cases traditional inkor in comics
um in animation look at what happened
when we made the transition from 2D
animation to 3D animation so many people
got displaced and I
remember there was a a very different
feeling back then when the 2D an
animators got replaced and we had a lot
of 3D
animators you know picking up gigs
because everybody was doing 3D animation
I mean it happened almost overnight it
was so weird it was like we had a couple
of Pixar movies come out and then all of
a sudden everybody's like yeah you know
what everything's going to be 3D from
here on out every major theatrical
release is going to be 3D and that was
just how it was going to be and so many
of these guys got displaced and they
were called Old heads they were called
old school they were Antiquated they
were ancient and then Disney does the
Mary Poppins
Sequel and they had to call these guys
out a retirement because nobody at
Disney knew how to draw 2D animation
anymore and they wanted it to to be
authentic and I think this is very
similar to that I think we're going to
have a whole generation of artists um
that are used to AI tools just like so
many artists now are used to painting
digitally are used to you know rendering
with under or whatever and it's just we
haven't figured out exactly what the
right combination is I don't think
replacing people completely is is the
answer but saying you're never going to
touch the technology at all and knows he
said generative AI he didn't say AI
assist he didn't he said generative AI
creating images whole cloth from uh
using AI uh you know I think it's here
to stay I just think we have to figure
out the right ratio of like you know
what what can we use this for you know
without completely displacing people
because then we're going to have a lot
of really sterile and we're seeing it
now like social media like all these
these posts they show you kind of this
like AI generated hellscape of bland syy
weird ass nightmare fuel
stuff
and you know we're never going to get
out of that if if we rely too heavily on
it and so I don't know it's going to be
really interesting to watch I mean I'm
open to new things I I have one foot in
the tech world I I you know I did work
as a Cartoonist for a while but I also
worked as a web developer and uh you
know I've kind of res resigned myself to
the fact that technology marches on but
I'm very curious to
see which artists actually make the leap
and which ones don't cuz I think some
people are so against AI in any
form any form whatsoever that even if it
would help them maybe double or triple
their own workload they will not use
it uh and those people will get left
behind
so I don't know but it is good at least
with with procreate that you know where
the company stands for now until they
sell or something but you know where
they stand you know if you buy procreate
they're not using generative AI you know
they're not going to swipe your stuff so
that's good you can't say the same about
Adobe right now and I I'm actually
trying to migrate all of our computers
over to Affinity because just for so
many reasons I have a problem with Adobe
now and I think it's yeah just a
subscription model I think is ridiculous
60 bucks a month or whatever for from
now until the end of time and they might
scrape your content I mean how
ridiculous is that I'm going to wrap it
up please subscribe we'll talk later
