Keywords

πŸ’‘Eucharist

The Eucharist, also known as Holy Communion, is a central sacrament in Christianity, representing the body and blood of Jesus Christ. In the video, the Eucharist is highlighted as spiritual nourishment essential for believers, as emphasized in the Gospel reading and the homily by Father Henk van Meijel.

πŸ’‘Transubstantiation

Transubstantiation is the theological concept in Catholicism where the bread and wine used in the Eucharist become the actual body and blood of Christ. Father van Meijel references this concept in explaining how the Eucharist, through transubstantiation, becomes a true embodiment of Jesus, crucial for the spiritual life of believers.

πŸ’‘Wisdom

Wisdom is depicted as a divine attribute in the Book of Proverbs, calling the faithful to live with insight and understanding. In the script, Wisdom is personified as building a house and inviting people to partake in her feast, symbolizing the importance of spiritual enlightenment and moral living.

πŸ’‘Proverbs

The Book of Proverbs, a part of the Old Testament, provides moral and practical guidance for living a righteous life. The video features a reading from Proverbs that emphasizes the importance of wisdom and living a life of insight, as opposed to foolishness.

πŸ’‘Eternal Life

Eternal life refers to the everlasting life promised to believers who follow Christ’s teachings and partake in the Eucharist. Jesus emphasizes this in the Gospel reading, where He explains that those who eat His flesh and drink His blood will live forever, underlining the significance of the Eucharist in attaining eternal life.

πŸ’‘Spiritual Nourishment

Spiritual nourishment is the concept of sustaining one's spiritual life through practices like prayer, reading scripture, and participating in the Eucharist. Father van Meijel discusses how the Eucharist, as spiritual food, helps believers grow closer to God and become more Christ-like.

πŸ’‘Sacrifice

Sacrifice in the Christian context refers to Jesus Christ’s offering of His body and blood for the salvation of humanity. The Mass itself is a re-enactment of this sacrifice, where believers remember and partake in Jesus' sacrifice through the Eucharist.

πŸ’‘Social Justice

Social justice refers to the fair and just relation between individuals and society, often focusing on equality and human rights. Father van Meijel mentions Alberto Hurtado, a Chilean saint known for his work in social justice, highlighting the importance of caring for the poor and marginalized in Christian life.

πŸ’‘Contemplation

Contemplation is a form of deep, reflective prayer or meditation aimed at growing closer to God. In the homily, Father van Meijel encourages believers to adopt a contemplative approach to life, slowing down and focusing on spiritual growth rather than getting caught up in the chaos of the world.

πŸ’‘Resurrection

Resurrection refers to Jesus Christ's rising from the dead on the third day after His crucifixion, a central event in Christian faith celebrated every Sunday. The Mass is a celebration of this resurrection, reminding believers of the hope and new life offered through Christ.

She has hewn her seven pillars.

play03:26

She has slaughtered her animals, she has mixed her wine.

play03:30

She has also set her table.

play03:32

She has sent out her servant girls.

play03:34

She calls from the highest places in the town.

play03:37

"You that are simple, turn in here."

play03:39

To those without sense, she says,

play03:42

"Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine I have mixed.

play03:46

"Lay aside immaturity and live and walk in the way of insight."

play07:21

PARISHIONERS: And with your spirit.

play07:22

A reading from the holy gospel according to John.

play07:25

PARISHIONERS: Glory to You, O Lord.

play07:28

Jesus said to the people,

play07:30

"I am the living bread that comes down from heaven.

play07:34

"Whoever eats of this bread will live forever.

play07:38

"And the bread that I will give for the life of the world

play07:41

"is my flesh."

play07:43

The people then disputed among themselves, saying,

play07:47

"How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"

play07:50

So, Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you,

play07:54

"unless you eat the flesh of the son of man,

play07:57

"and drink his blood, you have no life in you.

play08:02

"Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life

play08:07

"and I will raise him-- them up on the last day.

play08:11

"For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.

play08:15

"Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood

play08:19

"abides in me and I in them.

play08:21

"Just as the living Father sends me,

play08:24

"and I live because of the Father,

play08:27

"who forever eats me--

play08:30

"whomever eats me will live because of me.

play08:34

"This is the bread that came down from heaven,

play08:37

"not like that which your ancestors ate,

play08:40

"and they-- and they died.

play08:43

"But the one who eats this bread will live forever."

play08:47

The gospel of the Lord.

play08:50

PARISHIONERS: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

play08:53

In our readings today, we really bring the spiritual

play08:56

and our worldly lives together.

play08:59

And of course, it's very eucharistic,

play09:02

our gospel reading, as-- as Jesus explains,

play09:06

that they will eat his flesh and drink his blood.

play09:11

And, of course, we have the whole theol--

play09:14

theology of the transubstantiation,

play09:17

which came in in the 11th and 12th century

play09:20

with the Scholastic movement in the church.

play09:23

Trying to explain that the host is truly Jesus

play09:28

and that the blood is truly Jesus's.

play09:31

And how we need that for nourishment.

play09:34

In our first reading of proverbs, it really says,

play09:38

"Come and eat and drink the wisdom of God.

play09:42

"Come and eat and drink that wisdom of God,

play09:45

"forsake your foolishness." And of course,

play09:48

the Book of Proverbs

play09:50

is really based on lived experience,

play09:54

human lived experience.

play09:56

And I only have to look back in my own life

play09:59

about my foolish youth,

play10:01

how I made many stupid decisions, shall I say.

play10:05

Not wise decisions as I was chasing certain things.

play10:10

But if I only would have known. And the same in Ephesians,

play10:13

as Saint Paul writes to the Ephesians,

play10:16

"Do not get drunk on wine, and don't wreck yourself.

play10:20

"Stay calm, stay calm." Such simple advice.

play10:24

And especially in a busy-- a busy world,

play10:27

to stay calm with all the messiness.

play10:30

To stay calm when traffic is chaos.

play10:34

Just stay calm, you will get there.

play10:37

Probably a little bit late, but you will get there.

play10:39

But just to stay calm in our lives.

play10:42

So many people are just so absolutely stressed out.

play10:46

So many teenagers are just stressed out.

play10:49

And the same for me when I was a teenager.

play10:52

Most of my teenage years were very stressful.

play10:57

Trying to fit in, put on an image,

play11:00

trying to fit in the world. But if I-- looking back,

play11:04

if I only would have internalized all of this,

play11:07

how to stay calm, to stay away from strong drink.

play11:12

I've done a few stupid things, too,

play11:14

as I drank a few-- a little bit too much beer.

play11:17

Uh, but if I only would have known,

play11:22

I would have maybe been in a different place today.

play11:25

But-- not that I'm complaining about the place I am,

play11:28

but it's good, as we grow older, to reflect on that.

play11:32

And how the Eucharist feeds us, how the Eucharist feeds us.

play11:37

Um, and to become more God-like.

play11:41

We never become God, but during our long life journey,

play11:45

it's to become God-like. To learn from our mistakes.

play11:49

To learn from our silliness, and to slow down

play11:53

and to become more contemplative

play11:56

instead of running around all over the place.

play11:59

Just taking our time and become contemplative.

play12:02

And it's so important. And Jesus, of course,

play12:05

he was explaining that. Trying to explain.

play12:09

Chapter six, which we read of today,

play12:12

chapter six starts by feeding the five thousand.

play12:16

And so their bellies are full, and they try to follow him.

play12:21

Of course, it's followed by Jesus walking on water.

play12:24

Uh, and-- and the people catch up at Capernaum with him,

play12:29

and they want more, and Jesus, of course, says,

play12:32

"But all that you're looking for is physical food,"

play12:35

is physical food. And physical food, of course,

play12:38

is very important. If I don't eat in time,

play12:41

I get light-headed, I can't think.

play12:43

And so on. But it's that spiritual food

play12:47

that Jesus is talking about.

play12:49

And some people really

play12:51

can catch that, very early on.

play12:55

And of course we have the body of saints,

play12:58

who really are examples to us

play13:01

for how to live out,

play13:03

how to become more God-like, I should say.

play13:08

Today, in other years,

play13:10

Sundays, of course, we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord,

play13:14

but in other years, we would remember Alberto Hurtado,

play13:19

who, uh--

play13:21

who died in the early '50s, I believe.

play13:25

He was a Chilean saint, and he, uh,

play13:28

at age four, he acme from a well-to-do family.

play13:32

At age four, his parents died. Or, sorry, his dad died.

play13:36

And his mother, after his father's death,

play13:39

made some lousy, uh, real estate decisions,

play13:43

and she got basically cheated. And the family lived,

play13:47

for the rest of her days, in poverty,

play13:50

moving from one family to another,

play13:52

to-- to one relative to another.

play13:55

And Hurtado really picked it up.

play13:58

He learned. He learned to observe the world.

play14:01

All the messiness of it. And how, uh,

play14:05

how people step on one another,

play14:07

and how the poor always lose out.

play14:10

And so he-- he became a Jesuit in 1923.

play14:14

And, uh, he was very active.

play14:19

He wanted to change the world.

play14:22

Or at least in Chile.

play14:24

And Chile was kind of a little bit backwards.

play14:27

Uh, and so he became the director of Catholic Actions,

play14:31

and pushing social issues within the church.

play14:36

He became the founder of the Chilean Trade Union Association.

play14:41

And the Hogar de Cristo,

play14:44

"Home of Christ" movement.

play14:47

It was really a shelter for many street children.

play14:51

A great social justice.

play14:54

And he really, uh-- he really fought his battle

play14:58

with the hierarchy in the church

play15:00

who were not thinking social justice.

play15:03

And he really made big changes in the church.

play15:06

And also, actually,

play15:09

he was already basically called a saint before he died.

play15:13

But he died of pancreatic cancer at age 51.

play15:16

But in that short life, he made such a difference

play15:20

to so many people. And he really under--

play15:24

he really let himself be fed by, uh,

play15:28

by the Eucharist. And he became Christ-like

play15:32

as he became an example for so many of us.

play15:35

Amen.

play15:37

And so let us profess our faith

play15:41

using the words of the Apostle's Creed.

play15:44

ALL: I believe in God, the Father Almighty.

play15:46

Creator of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ,

play15:50

His only son, the Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

play15:54

born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

play15:58

was crucified, died, and was buried.

play16:00

He descended into hell.

play16:02

On the third day, he rose again from the dead.

play16:05

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God,

play16:09

the Father Almighty. From there, he will come to judge

play16:13

the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit,

play16:16

the holy Catholic church, the communion of saints,

play16:20

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,

play16:24

and life everlasting. Amen.

play16:27

And let us bring our prayers before the Lord.

play16:30

Let us pray for all those in our Daily TV Mass

play16:34

prayer intentions book. We pray to the Lord.

play16:37

PARISHIONERS: Lord hear our prayer.

play16:39

In our community prayer this month,

play16:41

we seek for ourselves and for the church

play16:45

a deeper love and understanding of the gift

play16:48

that the risen Christ makes of himself to us in the Eucharist.

play16:52

We pray to the Lord.

play16:54

PARISHIONERS: Lord hear our prayer.

play16:56

And for these prayers and the prayers in the silence

play16:58

of our own hearts, we lift them up to You, Lord.

play17:02

Amen.

play18:39

the glorious exchange, that by offering what You have given,

play18:43

we may merit to receive Your very self,

play18:46

through Christ, our Lord.

play18:48

PARISHIONERS: Amen.

play18:51

The Lord be with you.

play18:53

PARISHIONERS: And with your spirit.

play18:54

Lift up your hearts.

play18:56

PARISHIONERS: We lift them up to the Lord.

play18:58

Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

play19:00

PARISHIONERS: It is right and just.

play19:02

It is truly right and just. Our duty and our salvation,

play19:05

always and everywhere to give You thanks.

play19:08

Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and eternal God,

play19:11

for we know it belongs to Your boundless glory

play19:15

that You came to the aid of mortal beings

play19:18

with Your divinity, and even fashioned for us a remedy

play19:23

out of mortality itself, that the cause of our downfall

play19:27

might become the means of our salvation

play19:30

through Christ, our Lord.

play19:32

Through him, Your host of angels adores Your majesty,

play19:35

and rejoices in Your presence forever.

play19:39

May our voices, we pray, join with theirs

play19:42

in one chorus of exultant praise as we acclaim.

play20:47

You are indeed holy, O Lord. The fount of all holiness.

play20:50

Make holy therefore, these gifts, we pray

play20:53

by sending down Your spirit upon them like the dewfall

play20:57

so that they may become for us the body and the blood

play21:01

of our Lord Jesus Christ.

play21:03

At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly

play21:06

into his Passion, he took bread and, giving You thanks,

play21:09

broke it, and gave it to his disciples,

play21:12

saying, "Take this, all of you, and eat of it,

play21:17

"for this is my body,

play21:19

"which will be given up for you."

play21:22

(Altar bell ringing)

play21:30

In a similar way, when supper was ended,

play21:32

he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks,

play21:35

he gave it to his disciples, saying,

play21:39

"Take this, all of you, and drink from it,

play21:41

"for this is the chalice of my blood,

play21:44

"the blood of the new and eternal covenant,

play21:47

"which will be poured out for you and for many

play21:50

"for the forgiveness of sins.

play21:52

"Do this in memory of me."

play21:55

(Altar bell ringing)

play22:04

The mystery of faith.

play22:07

#

play22:08

# When we eat this bread #

play22:12

# And drink this cup #

play22:17

# We proclaim your death #

play22:20

# O Lord #

play22:22

# Until you come again #

play22:30

Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death

play22:33

and resurrection, we offer You, Lord, the bread of life

play22:36

and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks

play22:39

that You have held us worthy to be in Your presence

play22:41

and minister to You.

play22:43

Humbly, we pray, that partaking of the body and blood of Christ,

play22:47

we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.

play22:50

Remember Lord, Your church spread throughout the world,

play22:53

and bring her to the fullness of charity.

play22:56

Together with Francis, our Pope, Francis, our Bishop,

play23:00

The Order of Bishops, the clergy,

play23:02

and the entire people You have called Your own.

play23:05

Remember also our sisters and sisters

play23:08

who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection,

play23:10

and all who have died in Your mercy.

play23:13

Welcome them into the light of Your face.

play23:16

Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the blessed

play23:19

Virgin Mary, mother of God, with blessed Joseph, her spouse,

play23:23

with the blessed apostles, and all the saints

play23:25

who have pleased You throughout the ages,

play23:27

we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life

play23:31

and may praise and glorify You

play23:33

through Your son, Jesus Christ.

play23:40

Through him, and with him, and in him.

play23:43

O God, Almighty Father,

play23:45

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

play23:48

all glory and honour is Yours,

play23:51

forever and ever.

play23:53

ALL: Amen.

play23:55

And at the Saviour's command, informed by divine teaching,

play23:59

we dare to say...

play24:01

ALL: Our Father, Who art in heaven,

play24:04

hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,

play24:07

thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

play24:10

Give us this day our daily bread,

play24:13

and forgive us our trespasses,

play24:15

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

play24:19

And lead us not into temptation,

play24:21

but deliver us from evil.

play24:24

Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil.

play24:27

Graciously grant peace in our days,

play24:29

that by the help of Your mercy

play24:31

we may be always free from sin,

play24:33

and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope

play24:37

and the coming of our Saviour Jesus Christ.

play24:40

PARISHIONERS: For the kingdom, and the power,

play24:42

and the glory are Yours, now and forever.

play24:44

Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles,

play24:48

"Peace, I leave you. My peace, I give you."

play24:51

Look not on our sins, but on the faith of Your church

play24:54

and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance

play24:57

with Your will, who live and reign forever and ever.

play25:02

PARISHIONERS: Amen.

play25:03

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

play25:07

PARISHIONERS: And with your spirit.

play25:08

And let us offer each other a sign of peace.
