video you should be able to describe the
structure of DNA and what's meant by the
genome you should then be able to
explain why it's important that we
understand the human genome now I should
point out that if you're doing triple
biology then you'll be looking at the
structure of DNA in much more detail in
a later video however if you're studying
combine science then you only need to
know what's in this video in previous
videos we've been looking at chromosomes
and we've seen that chromosomes are
found in the nucleus of cells now a key
fact is that chromosomes contain the
molecule DNA scientists say that DNA is
a genetic material and that's because
our DNA determines our inherited
features I'm showing you the structure
of DNA here I should point out that this
is a simplified structure but it covers
all the points that you need for
combined science firstly DNA consists of
two strands on each strand is a polymer
in other words each strand is made by
joining together lots of smaller
molecules now in DNA the two strands
wrap around each other to form a double
helix and it's really important that you
learn the term double helix as that's a
very common example question so as we
said DNA is found in chromosomes I'm
showing you a picture of a chromosome
here now a key fact is that a gene is a
small section of DNA on a chromosome and
again you need to learn that definition
so I'm showing you here a gene for
example this could be the gene which
determines your blood type this gene is
found on chromosome number nine now in a
previous video we saw that proteins are
made by joining together amino acids
each gene encodes for a specific
sequence of amino acids to make a
specific protein for example the blood
type gene encodes the sequence of amino
acids for the protein that determines
blood type
now humans have literally thousands of
genes for example chromosome 9 has well
over 700 different genes I'm showing you
here the chromosome 9 pair both
chromosomes in a pair have the same
genes so in this case both copies of
chromosome 9 have the gene for blood
type okay we're going to finish now by
looking at the genome the genome is the
entire genetic material of an organism
so the human genome is the entire
genetic material that makes a human

benefits and in the exam you could be
asked to describe them firstly

us to search for genes that are linked

and lastly we can use the human genome
