let's talk about the future I know that
in some countries PR Less in Thailand
there were some fears um about the
science fiction scenario of AI taking
over and killing us all that's not going
to happen that's just not a thing that's
more science fiction than reality AI is
a very powerful technology um it's also
not
Magic
for platform deep learning

a
for thank you so much for your time
Andrew it is our great honor for Texas
team we have the opportunity to
interview you before uh we start uh
first of all I would like to uh ask
about what bring you to Thailand I've
been uh hoping to visit Thailand for a
long time and so when uh kbtg and KB
uh kindly invited me to visit I was very
happy to get to spend a few days here
and um meet with many business as well
as government leaders to see what we can
do on AI in Thailand wow amazing
[Music]
take opportunity
I'm also the big fan of the Cilla as
well so in your opinion how has the fing
of the Cilla and the
deeplearning.ai uh impact uh access to
the AI education globally I think I feel
I feel very privileged to have had the
chance to play a small role in helping
many people uh transform their lives
through learning I find that um te AI
technology AI technology is evolving so
quickly and yet for both Technical and
non-technical people for developers and
for others that may not be a software
engineer knowledge of AI skills can
transform the way all of us work um and
Beyond Tech skills of course corera also
helps many people gain many job relevant
skills in in many different professions
so I find it a real privilege uh to be
able to contribute to um uh this type of
training um that's helping many people
gain skills and and then do much more
with with their knowledge cut in more
detail about the education part and also
the impact uh on the new generation how
should we educate the new generation our
children in the age of the AI and how
should we communicate with them you know
one thing about AI is is a general
purpose technology so it's very
transformative for I think everyone's
lies um I think at this moment every
knowledge worker can get a significant
productivity boost by using AI by using
genive AI but with one caveat which is
that many people will need a little bit
of training to use it safely and
effectively um and so I think de blend.
a and corsera I think have a role to
play there to help people learn a little
bit the skills needed to use generative
AI um in fact the fastest growing course
on corera La year
was generative AI for everyone which
gives people a non-technical business
level understanding of how a reporter a
marketer a recruiter or salesperson um
or a software engineer can use
generative AI yeah amazing if you also
have like a Thai language right now a
lot of our content on Kera is translated
and has Thai subtitles I think we did um
top there are 20 languages we we uh
prioritize and I think Tai was one
amazing and then I want say in addition
to AI training for people that may not
be software Engineers I'm also excited
about what software Engineers can now do
with AI because it turns out that um if
you write software that calls open AI or
anthropic CL or Google gem or others
there's a lot of AI software that can
now be written with much less effort
than was possible before and this is
leading to flourishing of AI
applications as well so deep Lear AI
works with you know pretty much all
nearly all all of the leading AI
companies to teach the latest tools and
techniques and so that's been um uh uh
gratifying to see how many people are
learning the latest technical skills and
then using that um to build exciting
products that just were not possible one
or two years ago it's also related to
another question as well because you
also always mention about about
democratizing AI what are your thought
on the democratizing AI and make it
accessible and also the U beneficial for
everyone equally yeah I think um AI is
becoming easy and easier to use but
learning just a little bit of skill to
use it is still important for using it
effectively and maybe for the developer
side uh startup become compy developer
side let me share a quick example um it
turns out that if I want to build a
system for say senent uh uh tracking you
know maybe monitor social media read
reviews of a business see if it's
positive or negative sentiments um
historically there are a lot of
applications like that that might have
taken the team six to 12 months to build
like a robust Enterprise great AI
software to do something like that using
a technique called supervised learning
but it turns out with generative AI the
cost of development has gone from six
months down to maybe a week or just a
few days and so their project used to
take me six months to do that today
hundreds of thousands of people many
hundreds of thousands of people can do
in a week and that dramatic reduction in
the cost and complexity of building many
AI applications means that we're seeing
a flourishing of a lot of things being
built they just were not possible before
today in many Enterprises we're seeing
um uh AI uh being used to answer
questions we call them Rack or retrieve
augment generation systems but lot of
companies are building AI systems to
look at the corporate documents and
answer questions using that knowledge to
serve either internal users or external
customers um and there many AI chat Bots
customer service chat Bots being built
and these are all applications that are
so much easier to build now than just
one or two years ago and so deep
learning.ai and and coera I think offer
a lot of content to teach people how to
build these applications true this is a
positive PA but let's talk about the
another side like there is another
highlight issue today like we call it
like ethical issue one of the most
significant ethical challenge in AI
today what what is the recommendation
that you would like to give to Big
corporate and also the everyone who use
the AI to uh overcome this kind issue
yeah so I know that in some countries
pretty Less in Thailand there were some
fears um about the science fiction
scenario of AI taking over and killing
us all that's not going to happen that's
just not a thing that's more science
fiction than reality um but to point at
the uh important ethical issues it turns
out that um AI is a general purpose
technology and so the ethical issues
tend to relate to the application rather
than technology so for example if you're
using AI to build medical device then I
think people have certain stand and
expectations about what it takes to make
a medical device safe um in comparison
if you're using AI to build an
electrical vehicle then safety standards
for an electrical vehicle are very
different than safety standards for a
medical device or if you use AI to
inspect smartphones for scratches a
factory then again that is a different
set of Standards or if you use AI or if
you're building underwriting software
making loads then there are standards
how to make sure it doesn't discriminate
against people so I find that the lot
ethical issues of AI relate more to the
application yeah um which is why I tend
to recommend business and Developers for
the application you're building if that
sector already has standards it's good
to refer to those standards but then
also um my teams will often spend some
time to brainstorm in advance all the
things that could possibly go wrong and
when we do that we can often put in
place um monitoring metrics mitigation
plans um to make sure that the
unacceptable outcome you have low risk
or what don't happen I see currently we
are facing many social problem how do
you think about the AI can play a
crucial role in addressing critical
social issues such as the poverty the
education and also the climate change
yeah so AI is a very powerful technology
um it's also not magic yeah so I think
there is work that needs to be done to
figure out how it can be applied to
solve the problems that we think are
important um so take climate change um
AI fund we work with AES which is one of
the largest producers of renewable
energy in the world they're actually the
biggest seller of renewable energy data
centers for example um to try to use AI
to make Renewables even more efficient I
think finding ways to decarbonize
hopefully will help with climate change
and I'm also doing some work on AI based
climate modeling to see if there are
Technologies um for cooling down the
planet
I feel like uh education is a really
difficult and important problem um and
so we and others are exploring how to
use AI to to support students learning
um uh and I think uh in terms of poverty
I hope that there will be a path to help
many people build better careers and
earn more wealth by using AI tools but
then I realize also that that's a more
fundamental question and I hope AI could
play a role in solving it but I also
don't know that a is a solution to these
very deep problems okay last but not
least let's talk about the the future so
what your thought about the AGI and in
the next 10 year how do you think about
the AI will change our life and also our
world as well so the set of tasks the AI
could do is rapidly expanding um in fact
AI Now can do quite a lot of things one
of the exciting technology Trends is
something called uh AI agents or agentic
Ai and what that means is um today a lot
of people use large language models uh
by prompting it to write an essay but
that's that I'll see someone write an
essay by typing from start to finish
without ever using backspace it's hard
to write like that a gentic AI is a
different type of workflow where you ask
the AI to First write an outline then do
some web search research if it then
write the first draft then critique the
draft and revise it but this Ty of
agentic workflow the which is maybe more
similar as how a human would write the
AI can look at the essay and just work
it over and over to think about to
revise it think about the revising this
results in much better workflow and this
is expanding the set of tasks AI could
do so this is a exciting Trend um
regarding AGI the standard definition of
AGI is AI that could do any intellectual
task human can so when we have AGI AI
should learn to drive a car or Learn to
Fly AE or learn to write a PhD thesis in
University for that definition of HGI I
think we're many decades away maybe even
longer I hope we get there in a lifetime
but I'm not sure one of the reason that
there's hype about AGI in just a few
years is there's some companies that
using very nonstandard definitions of
AGI and if you redefine AGI to be a low
power then of course we could get there
in one or two years but using the
standard definition of AGI of AI to
could do any intellectual task of human
can I think we're still many decades
away but I think it'd be great if we
managed to get there yeah thank you so
much andu we have learned a lot from you
too thank you so much for your time too
thank
you House of
Wisdom
for collaboration
for open source software
