The first paragraph introduces Brian Dean, the founder of Backlinko, and explains that he will share a proven, 5-step keyword research blueprint he has used to help grow his site to over 150,000 monthly visitors. He promises that by following his approach, you can uncover keywords that your competition doesn't know about.

😯 Identifying Your Target Customer Persona

The second paragraph explains the importance of identifying your target customer persona before doing keyword research. It uses an example of an SEO training site targeting small/medium businesses to illustrate how knowing your customer persona allows you to find relevant long-tail keywords that competitors may be missing.

10:03

🤔 Finding Topics Your Customers Care About

The third paragraph provides tips on finding topics your target customers care about, by observing where they spend time online. It gives specific examples of online communities, blogs, forums etc. where you can explore conversations and identify important topics to base your keyword research on.

Mindmap

Keywords

💡Keyword Research

The process of identifying high-potential search terms and phrases that match consumer intent. In the video, keyword research is presented as a strategic first step to attract qualified website visitors who are likely to convert to customers. Effective keyword research uncovers relevant long-tail keywords with high commercial intent that competitors have not optimized for.

💡Customer Persona

A detailed representation of your ideal customer, including demographic and behavioral data. Identifying your customer persona is important for keyword research because it reveals what terms they actually search for outside of your core offerings. This allows you to get your business in front of them across more touchpoints.

💡Commercial Intent

How likely a user searching for a given keyword is to follow through with a conversion or purchase. Keywords with high commercial intent convert better, so assessing intent helps select the best terms to target.

💡Long Tail Keywords

Specific, descriptive search queries with lower competition and more qualified traffic potential. As opposed to short, high-volume terms, long tail keywords uncovered through research allow businesses to rank well and attract engaged visitors.

💡Search Volume

The estimated number of monthly searches for a keyword, indicating total demand and traffic potential. Though now shown in ranges rather than exact numbers, assessing search volume still helps gauge relevance when selecting keywords.

💡Monetization

Converting website traffic into revenue, a challenge cited in the video. Effective keyword research surfaces terms that visitors are likely to convert from, ensuring invested resources pay off through monetization.

💡Optimized Content

Creating pages and other content assets that deliberately target chosen keywords, including them throughout in a relevant, natural way. This content optimization for specific terms then attracts searchers to convert.

💡SEO Visibility

Using search engine optimization best practices to improve rankings for selected keywords, driving more qualified visitors from search to your site. Keyword research and content optimization combine to enhance visibility.

💡Growth Trends

How the popularity of a keyword changes over time, revealed through Google Trends data. Factoring upward or downward trajectories into decisions balances current and future volume potential in keyword selection.

💡Conversion Funnel

The customer journey stages from awareness to purchase, with keyword research aiming to attract visitors at early funnel stages. Optimized content then moves them through to conversion at lower funnel stages.

Highlights

This is the same blueprint I've used, to help grow my site to over a hundred fifty thousand, unique visitors per month.

Your customer spends 99.9 percent of their time online, not searching for what you sell.

Identify where your target customer hangs out online. Then look for topics that they tend to discuss.

Use Google Suggest by typing your topic into the search field without pressing Enter. The suggested keywords are usually good long tail options.

On Quora, search for your topic and see which keywords tend to show up in questions and answers.

Search your topic on Reddit. Keywords that come up repeatedly in discussion threads often make good targets.

Scroll to the bottom of Google search results for your topic. The related searches section provides excellent long tail keyword ideas.

Check the links and table of contents on Wikipedia articles related to your topic for closely related keywords.

Analyze commercial intent by looking at suggested AdWords bid prices and number of ads for each keyword.

Use SEMrush or kwfinder to find exact monthly search volumes when Google Keyword Planner only shows ranges.

Look at search trends on Google Trends. Prioritize growing keywords over those declining in popularity.

Create optimized landing pages and content for your selected high-potential keywords.

Subscribe to the Backlinko YouTube channel for more exclusive SEO tips and techniques.

Share your own favorite keyword research tactics in the comments.

Following this 5-step blueprint will uncover excellent, low-competition keywords to target.

play00:00

- In this video, I'm gonna show you my proven

play00:02

five step keyword research blueprint.

play00:04

This is the same blueprint I've used

play00:06

to help grow my site to over a hundred fifty thousand

play00:09

unique visitors per month.

play00:11

I'm Brian Dean, the founder of Backlinko

play00:12

the place where marketers turn for higher rankings

play00:15

and more traffic.

play00:16

And today you're gonna learn

play00:17

exactly how to find the best keywords for your business.

play00:21

Keep watching.

play00:27

When I first got started with SEO

play00:28

my approach to keyword research was a total mess.

play00:32

Back then, I'll fire up the latest and greatest

play00:34

keyword research tool

play00:35

and start typing in a bunch of random keywords.

play00:38

So, what's wrong with this approach?

play00:40

My competitors were doing the exact same thing.

play00:43

No wonder most of the keywords I found

play00:45

were insanely competitive.

play00:47

Now over the years I developed a keyword research blueprint

play00:50

that works really well.

play00:51

Specifically, this blueprint will help you

play00:53

uncover keywords that your competition

play00:56

doesn't know about.

play00:57

So let's dive right in with step number one of this process

play01:00

which is to identify your customer persona.

play01:03

This is a step that most people skip

play01:05

and it hurts them.

play01:06

(zapp) Aww. What was that?

play01:08

So what is identifying your customer persona actually mean?

play01:12

Let me explain with an example.

play01:14

My site sells SEO Training products

play01:16

to small and medium size businesses.

play01:19

Most people in my position

play01:20

would open up a keyword research tool

play01:22

and type in things like; SEO training and SEO courses

play01:26

into the tool.

play01:27

What's the problem with this approach?

play01:29

First off like I mentioned before

play01:30

your competition is doing the exact same thing.

play01:34

Which means you're gonna run into

play01:35

the exact same set of keywords as your competitors.

play01:38

But more important than that

play01:39

this approach ignores a very important fact

play01:42

about your customer and that fact is this:

play01:44

your customer spends 99.9 percent of their time online

play01:49

not searching for what you sell.

play01:51

In other words, if you only target your customer

play01:54

when they search for the exact thing you sell

play01:56

you're missing out on hundreds of other opportunities

play02:00

to get in front of them.

play02:01

For example in my case

play02:02

I noticed that most of my customers were SEO agencies.

play02:06

So I went to forums and online communities

play02:08

where SEO agency owners tended to hang out.

play02:11

That way I could see what my target customer search for

play02:14

when he wasn't searching for SEO training.

play02:17

And I discovered that there are dozens of keywords

play02:19

that my target customer typed into Google

play02:21

that were related to my products but had nothing to do

play02:25

with SEO training.

play02:26

Keywords like on-page SEO

play02:28

list building

play02:29

how to get more traffic

play02:30

and SEO tools.

play02:32

And because I target these keywords

play02:34

I get my business in front of

play02:35

thousands of my target customers every single day.

play02:39

And when my target customers ready to buy

play02:41

I'm the first person that comes to mind.

play02:44

That's the power of doing keyword research

play02:46

based on your customer persona.

play02:48

And all you need to do for this step

play02:50

is say my customer is X.

play02:53

For example, if you run an online flower shop

play02:55

you might say; my customer is a bride

play02:58

getting ready for her upcoming wedding.

play03:00

That was easy, right?

play03:01

Now that you've identified your customer persona

play03:03

it's time to find topics that your customer

play03:06

is interested in.

play03:07

Which leads us to the next step

play03:08

in my keyword research blueprint

play03:10

which is to find topics that your customers care about.

play03:14

So how do you find these topics?

play03:16

Its simple.

play03:17

Go to where your target customer hangs out online.

play03:20

Then look for topics that they tend to discuss.

play03:23

Seriously, that's it.

play03:25

For example in my case, my customers tend to hang out

play03:27

at marketing-focused communities

play03:30

like inbound.org and growthhackers.com

play03:33

In your case

play03:34

your target customer may hang out in places like

play03:36

Pinterest, Reddit, YouTube, industry blogs and niche forums.

play03:40

Once you've identified where your target customer hangs out

play03:43

it's time to keep an eye out for topics

play03:45

that are important to them.

play03:46

For example in my case, I noticed that link building

play03:49

was one of the most popular topics in the online communities

play03:53

that my audience spent time on.

play03:56

So I wrote down link building as a topic.

play03:58

And I kept digging until I found at least five topics

play04:01

that my target customers talked about

play04:03

in online communities.

play04:05

Now that you have at least five topics

play04:07

it's time to drill down into finding keywords.

play04:10

Here, my four favorite tactics for finding on-tap keywords

play04:14

that your competition doesn't know about.

play04:16

First we have Google Suggest.

play04:19

To use this strategy, just head over to Google

play04:21

and type your topic into the search field.

play04:24

But don't press Enter.

play04:25

Instead, take a look at the keywords

play04:27

that Google suggests for you.

play04:29

These are usually awesome, long tail keywords

play04:32

that you can go after.

play04:34

As a quick pro tip, try putting a few spaces

play04:36

before your keyword.

play04:38

This will show you a completely different set

play04:40

of keyword ideas.

play04:42

Next up, we have quora.com.

play04:44

Quora is a massive community of people that ask

play04:48

and answer questions on every topic under the sun.

play04:51

All you need to do is search for your topic in Quora

play04:54

and see which keywords tend to show up.

play04:56

Our next tactic for finding keywords is to use Reddit.

play05:00

Like Quora, Reddit is a massive community of people

play05:03

that discuss every topic under the sun

play05:05

from pets to politics.

play05:07

To use Reddit for keyword research

play05:09

simply head over to Reddit and search for your topic.

play05:12

When you find a thread on your topic

play05:13

keep an eye out for words and phrases that tend to come up

play05:16

again and again.

play05:18

These make awesome keyword ideas.

play05:20

Next up we have Google's Searches Related To feature.

play05:24

To use this feature, simply type your topic into Google.

play05:27

Then scroll to the bottom of the results.

play05:30

Google then show you other searches

play05:32

that are related to the keyword you just put in.

play05:35

These are usually excellent long tail keywords

play05:37

that you can target with your content.

play05:40

Finally we have Wikipedia.

play05:42

What other site had in-depth articles for topics like

play05:45

mall walking

play05:46

The Lingerie Football League

play05:47

henlias, the five-second rule.

play05:50

To use Wikipedia for keyword research

play05:52

just head over to Wikipedia and type in your topic.

play05:55

Then take a look at the other entries

play05:57

that that article links to.

play06:00

These are usually closely-related topics

play06:02

and even potential keywords themselves.

play06:04

Also, make sure to check out the table of contents

play06:07

for the entry.

play06:09

Again, these are usually keywords

play06:11

that are closely tied to your topic.

play06:13

Now that you have a list of potential keywords

play06:15

it's time to choose the best from your list.

play06:18

How? By analyzing each keyword's commercial intent.

play06:22

One of the first websites I ever built

play06:24

shot to the top of Google for my target keyword.

play06:27

And because that keyword got a ton of search volume

play06:29

that single ranking helped that site generate

play06:31

over 60,000 unique visitors per month.

play06:35

All good right? Wrong.

play06:36

Even thought that keyword got a ton of searches

play06:38

the people that searched for that keyword

play06:41

were flat broke.

play06:42

Which made monetizing that traffic impossible.

play06:45

Sorry dude, I'm broke.

play06:48

That's why today I pay very close attention to a keyword's

play06:51

commercial intent.

play06:53

Commercial intent simply means

play06:54

how likely someone searching for a given keyword

play06:57

is to buy from you.

play06:58

Here's how to find out if your keyword

play07:00

has a high commercial intent or not.

play07:02

First, head over to the Google Keyword Planner

play07:04

and type in one of your potential keywords.

play07:08

Then take a look at the Suggested bid column.

play07:11

This shows you how much advertisers are spending in AdWords

play07:14

for a single click from this keyword.

play07:17

Obviously, the higher the suggested bid

play07:19

the more valuable that keyword is.

play07:22

Another simple way to size up commercial intent

play07:24

is to see how many AdWords ads

play07:27

appear when you search for your keyword in Google.

play07:30

If you search for your keyword and see lots of AdWords ads

play07:33

it means that people are chobbing at the bit

play07:35

to bring those searchers to their site.

play07:38

Okay, now it's time for our last step

play07:40

which is to look at each keywords search volume.

play07:43

Back in the day, Google would show you

play07:45

exact search volume numbers in the Google Keyword Planner.

play07:49

Unfortunately, that ship has sailed.

play07:52

Today, unless you're running active AdWords campaigns

play07:55

they show you an extremely unhelpful search volume range.

play08:00

So how can you see how many people searched

play08:02

for your keyword?

play08:03

There are two freemium tools that get the job done.

play08:07

The first is semrush.com.

play08:10

To find a keyword search volume

play08:12

simply type the keyword into SEMrush

play08:14

and they'll show you how many searches that keyword gets

play08:17

every month. Simple.

play08:19

You can also use kwfinder.com.

play08:23

Again, just pop your keyword into the tool

play08:25

and you'll see the exact amount of searches

play08:28

that it gets every month.

play08:30

Now before you decide in a keyword

play08:31

I recommend one last bonus step.

play08:34

Now this step is completely optional.

play08:36

But in my experience it helps you find the absolute

play08:39

best keywords for your business.

play08:41

And that step is to look at your keyword's growth

play08:44

in Google Trends.

play08:45

For example, let's say that you found two keywords

play08:48

that have similar search volume and commercial intent

play08:51

and you don't know which one to pick.

play08:53

But when you look at Google Trends

play08:55

you notice that one keyword is growing in popularity

play08:58

and the other is dropping like a stone.

play09:01

Obviously you'd wanna go with the keyword that's growing.

play09:04

A couple of years ago, this step saved my butt.

play09:07

I was debating whether to target one of two keywords.

play09:11

Google Keyword Tool

play09:12

or Google Keyword Planner?

play09:14

You see, Google has recently renamed the Google Keyword Tool

play09:18

the Google Keyword Planner.

play09:20

But the keyword Google Keyword Tool still got

play09:23

20 times more searches than Google Keyword Planner.

play09:27

So I almost pulled the trigger on Google Keyword Tool.

play09:30

That is until I looked at Google Trends.

play09:34

That's when I noticed

play09:35

that searches for the Google Keyword Planner

play09:37

were skyrocketing

play09:38

while searched for the Google Keyword Tool

play09:41

were steadily dropping.

play09:43

So I decided to go with the Google Keyword Planner

play09:46

and it was a good move.

play09:47

I now rank in the top five for that keyword

play09:49

and it's a keyword that's growing in popularity everyday.

play09:53

Okay, so that's all there is to my five step

play09:56

keyword research blueprint.

play09:57

If you follow the blueprint you should have a handful

play10:00

of excellent keywords that you can use.

play10:02

And once you have those

play10:03

it's a matter of creating landing pages and content

play10:06

optimized around those terms.
