Transcripts

play00:00

hi i'm mike from atb guitars and today

play00:04

we're going to do a video which has been

play00:05

requested by a fair few people

play00:08

and one which i'm looking forward to

play00:10

myself

play00:11

we're going to

play00:12

give you a top 10 rundown of the best

play00:15

performing

play00:17

vintage guitars in investment terms over

play00:20

the last 10 years

play00:25

[Music]

play00:31

okay so before i get too far into the

play00:34

video there's a few caveats which i'd

play00:36

like to

play00:37

just uh announce here uh we're focusing

play00:40

on vintage guitars

play00:42

from

play00:43

2012 to 2022

play00:46

and we're focusing on just the brands

play00:50

and types which we specialize in i.e

play00:53

vintage fender and gibson

play00:56

mainly solid solid-bodied guitars but

play00:58

also thin lines

play01:00

from

play01:02

the 50s through to 1975.

play01:07

after 1975 there's bound to be very good

play01:11

performers out there which have done

play01:13

well over these last 10 years but

play01:15

because we don't specialize in those

play01:17

guitars i'm not really

play01:20

able to say how well they've done so i'm

play01:22

concentrating on just guitars we know

play01:24

here and it's going to be a relatively

play01:28

well relatively narrow list but there

play01:30

will be a lot of famous ones

play01:32

in there the other limitation i just

play01:35

like to quickly discuss is that this is

play01:37

for a uk centric market before brexit it

play01:40

would have had relevance to the european

play01:43

market as well

play01:44

and there will be some overlap to the

play01:47

u.s and international markets

play01:50

in fact i asked a few of my dealer

play01:52

friends internationally for their

play01:54

opinions on

play01:56

what they thought were best performing

play01:58

guitars of the last 10 years so i've

play02:01

incorporated their ideas into that as

play02:03

well and

play02:05

that is those who responded and

play02:07

particularly i'd like to thank south

play02:09

side guitars and brooklyn j rosen

play02:11

guitars in

play02:13

in emeryville california for for help in

play02:16

compiling all this so before i get into

play02:19

the top 10 which i'm sure you're all

play02:21

waiting to hear

play02:22

i'm just going to give a very quick

play02:24

overview of how vintage guitar prices

play02:28

have changed over the last 20 years or

play02:31

so for me from this century basically

play02:34

in the 90s there was a reasonable good

play02:38

growth of most vintage guitars usually

play02:41

around five percent a year sometimes

play02:43

more depending on the model

play02:46

um this growth started to accelerate in

play02:49

the early 2000s

play02:51

and from about

play02:54

2003 2004

play02:56

it started to accelerate quite rapidly

play02:59

as did other investments as well

play03:02

not just guitar but all alt investments

play03:06

were accelerating in value like art

play03:09

also the housing market as we obviously

play03:11

know increasing value a lot during that

play03:13

period stocks indices also increased

play03:17

and it was uh the that period up to

play03:21

2007-2008

play03:23

was a very very buoyant time

play03:25

but as we all know now it was

play03:27

artificially inflated there was a crash

play03:30

at 2000 2008

play03:32

and from 2008 to

play03:35

2013

play03:37

uh guitars went down in value

play03:40

not by as much as they had increased

play03:43

from 2005 but they did go down a bit and

play03:47

it took until

play03:49

2013 2014 to for the recovery to finally

play03:54

take place

play03:56

so the period we're covering does

play03:58

include a bit of guitar recession so to

play04:01

speak so it won't be

play04:03

an all uphill graph if we did plot it on

play04:06

the graph

play04:08

from

play04:09

2013

play04:11

2014 onwards it was reasonably steady

play04:14

sometimes a flat growth in values

play04:17

and then 2018 it started to accelerate

play04:20

again slightly

play04:22

not as much as it did in the

play04:24

mid 2000s that's for sure but it did

play04:26

start to go up we noticed that in

play04:28

particular

play04:30

and

play04:31

in 21 22 there was quite a sharp

play04:35

increase in values due to the covert

play04:37

situation for lockdown basically no one

play04:40

was able to bring guitars to dealers to

play04:42

guitar shows the

play04:44

supply was very very limited but the

play04:47

demand was still there so as a

play04:49

consequence of that when

play04:52

demand out strips supply prices do tend

play04:55

to go up and that's what's happened over

play04:57

the last year

play04:58

and will that continue

play05:01

we don't see any signs of it not yet but

play05:05

it's it's early days to say really right

play05:08

so i know you want to get into the top

play05:09

10. but before i do here's a quick

play05:11

disclaimer i'm not a financial expert

play05:14

i'm just a guy who loves guitars and

play05:17

owns a guitar store so

play05:19

don't treat this as financial advice

play05:22

any

play05:23

past growths is not indicative of future

play05:26

growth so uh just bear that in mind when

play05:29

i go through the individual guitars and

play05:31

tell you what they've risen or declined

play05:34

or whatever just just bear that in mind

play05:36

that's all i'm trying to say

play05:39

so without too much further ado here is

play05:42

number 10

play05:43

of the best performing guitars over the

play05:46

last 10 years it is from 1958 to 1960

play05:50

gibson les paul standard burst

play05:53

now

play05:53

a lot of you may be surprised to find

play05:55

this down at number 10. a lot of people

play05:57

would think it would be a lot higher up

play06:00

in the list but

play06:01

the bursts really had their massive

play06:04

growth in value during the 70s and 80s

play06:08

and they've now at a position where by

play06:12

their growth is good but it's not it's

play06:16

not fantastic when you compare it to

play06:19

other guitars they are solid investments

play06:22

they're probably the most talked about

play06:24

guitar most discussed guitar on the

play06:26

planet

play06:27

and they're also probably the most

play06:30

sought after as well so they'll always

play06:32

be a healthy market for them but

play06:35

prices have probably reached

play06:37

getting towards their peak for now but

play06:40

we'll see what happens later on

play06:42

i remember in 2012

play06:47

i sold my first burst for just under 170

play06:50

000.

play06:51

and uh that same guitar now would

play06:54

probably be worth about 250 thousands

play06:57

uh the example i'm using

play07:00

is a 1959 with mild flame with no issues

play07:05

uh guitars with spectacular tops will

play07:08

sell for an awful lot more than this and

play07:10

will be a great demand for those and

play07:12

guitars of issues will sell for less but

play07:16

generally what we're looking at is a 48

play07:19

growth over that 10-year period

play07:24

okay number nine on our list of best

play07:27

investment returns this by way is in

play07:30

percentage terms it's not in terms of

play07:33

overall value it's in percentage terms

play07:36

but number nine on our list is the

play07:38

gibson es 335

play07:41

from

play07:42

1958 through to 1964.

play07:46

the model we've based this on is a 1963

play07:50

stocktail

play07:51

cherry red one the earlier ones are 59

play07:54

long guards and 58s have gone up a lot

play07:57

more than this

play07:58

um the

play08:00

later ones with the

play08:02

with the narrow nuts have gone

play08:04

up a lot less than this so we thought

play08:06

we'd pick a 63 as a baseline so in 1963

play08:11

stocktail es-335 in 2012 would be

play08:15

selling for around

play08:18

12 13 000 pounds

play08:21

in 2022 the same guitar would now be

play08:24

worth 20

play08:26

um maybe a bit more depending on the

play08:28

exact configuration and condition but

play08:30

that's the sort of baseline price for a

play08:33

really good no issues 63.

play08:36

blondes are even more expensive and

play08:38

they've gone up a lot more

play08:40

but

play08:41

this is basically the average of three

play08:43

three fives and it shows us a 58.3

play08:47

ish percent rise over that 10-year

play08:50

period

play08:53

okay number eight on our list of top ten

play08:56

is the fender jazz master which for a

play09:00

lot of you is probably not so much of a

play09:01

surprise

play09:03

if you've tried to buy one recently a

play09:05

vintage pre-cps one

play09:07

the jazz master we chose to focus on is

play09:10

a 1959

play09:12

nitrate guard version not the anodized

play09:14

guard version

play09:16

which we were selling

play09:18

2012 for about

play09:21

7 000 just under and

play09:24

in 2022

play09:26

we were selling them for 12 000

play09:30

quite easily now they have gone up in

play09:32

value a lot recently

play09:35

i.e over the last um three years and

play09:38

certainly over a pandemic period

play09:41

the reason for that i guess is uh indie

play09:44

bands seem to like them

play09:45

they're they're the cool flavor of the

play09:48

month guitar at the moment and

play09:51

we're getting very very strong interest

play09:53

whenever we have one in

play09:55

so

play09:56

custom colors i'll just quickly touch on

play09:59

that custom colors have gone up even

play10:00

more and we're not concentrating on

play10:02

custom colors so much because

play10:04

each custom colour has a separate value

play10:06

on it and as i said before the anodized

play10:09

guard versions have gone up even more

play10:12

still

play10:12

so if you're lucky enough to have a 59

play10:15

or 58 of an anodized guard then uh it's

play10:18

gone up an awful lot more than the

play10:20

standard jazz master which

play10:23

on our calculations has shown an

play10:25

increase of 73

play10:29

okay number seven

play10:31

is the gibson sg standard which was the

play10:34

model made from 1961

play10:38

through to 1965 and the one we're

play10:41

actually focusing on is a 61 with the

play10:44

sideways tram in cherry red everyone's

play10:48

favorite

play10:50

these guitars

play10:51

uh are still relatively affordable when

play10:54

you compare it to other path equipped

play10:57

there's full standards

play11:00

they're still quite a bargain in in our

play11:02

opinion

play11:03

but

play11:04

they've caught on in 2012 we were

play11:07

selling sg standards in cherry with the

play11:09

sideways trend for nine and a half

play11:11

thousand in 2022

play11:14

you'd be looking at paying around 18 000

play11:17

pounds

play11:18

for the same guitar so they've they have

play11:21

actually showed very good growth

play11:24

um

play11:25

there is problems with him obviously a

play11:28

lot of them broken so i think that has

play11:30

helped increase the values of the ones

play11:32

which haven't been broken

play11:34

and

play11:36

i i think personally that there's more

play11:38

there's more to come with these guitars

play11:40

that they would be in good investment

play11:42

even at their higher prices right now

play11:45

and they have showed an increase of

play11:46

nearly 79

play11:48

over the last 10 years

play11:50

[Music]

play11:51

number six on our top 10 list of

play11:54

best-performing investment guitars

play11:56

are gibson les paul standard goal tops

play11:59

from 1952

play12:02

through to 1956.

play12:04

the one we're going to be focusing on is

play12:06

the 1954 rap tale

play12:09

which in 2012 we were selling for 16 000

play12:13

around that sort of price range

play12:16

in 2022 you would now be looking at

play12:19

paying 30 000 at least for a nice

play12:22

example of one of these

play12:24

which is pretty good growth really

play12:27

it's not just that particular version

play12:29

which has increased in value even the

play12:32

old original trapeze tail 52 gold tops

play12:35

have gone up by pretty much the same

play12:37

amounts as the

play12:40

as the rap tails and the 57 humbucker

play12:43

equipped ones although it doesn't cover

play12:45

in this

play12:46

particular segment have also increased

play12:50

considerably as well but these goal tops

play12:53

from 1952 to 1956 have generally shown

play12:56

an 87.5

play12:58

increase over the last 10 years which is

play13:02

not too bad really is it

play13:05

so we're halfway through and this is

play13:07

number five on our top 10 list

play13:09

and it is the gibson es 330

play13:14

specifically versions from

play13:16

1959

play13:18

through to 1963.

play13:21

these guitars have

play13:24

increased in popularity a lot over 10

play13:26

years i remember in 2012 we were selling

play13:29

59

play13:31

es330s for 5000. 000

play13:33

in

play13:34

2022 you can't buy one for under 10 000

play13:39

it's pretty much impossible if you're

play13:41

looking for a good one

play13:43

it's the same rough proportionate

play13:46

increase for the models from 1960

play13:50

up to 1962 ish the ones of a dot neck

play13:53

they although they don't go for so much

play13:55

money they have proportionately

play13:57

increased in value

play14:00

this is just because people are

play14:01

discovering what a wonderful guitar they

play14:04

are

play14:04

they're great guitars just to have

play14:06

sitting by your couch to pick up and

play14:07

play and

play14:09

noodle whenever you want they're perfect

play14:11

for that

play14:12

and

play14:13

they're they're 100

play14:15

increase in value over the last 10 years

play14:18

in my opinion is completely justified

play14:23

so we're up to number four on the list

play14:24

now and this is one which if you've been

play14:27

following our listings over the last 10

play14:29

years you you there's probably no

play14:31

surprise that this one's in here at all

play14:34

and number four on the list of the top

play14:36

10 best performing investment vintage

play14:38

guitars

play14:39

over the last 10 years has been pre-cbs

play14:42

fender stratocasters

play14:44

everyone seems to want one

play14:46

it's like the blue chip guitar of the

play14:49

vintage guitar market

play14:50

and they have showed

play14:53

really really good growth

play14:55

mainly down to popularity

play14:59

sound playability image everything

play15:02

they're really really good performers

play15:04

and i i think they will continue to be

play15:06

as well everyone wants strats and i

play15:08

can't see that tailing off at all so in

play15:11

2012 we were selling 1963 fender strats

play15:14

in sunburst which is what i'm going to

play15:16

use as a benchmark for around 11 000

play15:19

pounds

play15:20

in

play15:21

2022 if you want one today you'd be

play15:24

looking at paying around 23 000 pounds

play15:27

for one and we sell them for that price

play15:30

fairly regularly so uh it's not it's not

play15:33

a hype

play15:34

uh of these levels

play15:36

the um

play15:37

the earlier maple neck ones have shown

play15:41

similar increases in value

play15:44

the values

play15:45

increase starts to tail off when you get

play15:48

to 65 but they've always increased and

play15:52

while i'm on the subject of of oddballs

play15:55

um even refins have showed nearly 100

play15:58

percent increase in value pre-cbs refin

play16:01

guitars have gone up 100 since 2012.

play16:04

so there's no surprise at all that

play16:06

pre-cbs strats are high up on this list

play16:10

and they've showed an increase in value

play16:13

of 110

play16:14

over the last 10 years the price

play16:17

increase does not take into account

play16:18

custom color straps which have actually

play16:21

increased into the stratosphere in some

play16:24

instances so these are just for sunburst

play16:27

strats from the pre-cbs era

play16:30

[Music]

play16:32

so number three in our list of top 10 is

play16:34

probably not much of a surprise to those

play16:37

who follow the vintage guitar market

play16:39

number three

play16:40

are fender telecaster black cards

play16:44

which are basically ones from 1950

play16:47

through to 1954.

play16:50

uh there's always strong interest for

play16:52

black guards

play16:54

i remember in

play16:56

2012 we were selling these for

play16:59

around 23 000 pounds this is original

play17:03

ones highway today in 2022 if you want a

play17:05

black guard of that period an original

play17:08

one you'd be looking for around 50 000

play17:10

pounds so that's a pretty good increase

play17:13

in value

play17:14

the

play17:15

they have always been

play17:18

one of the

play17:19

like pre-cbs strats the blue chip guitar

play17:22

in anyone's collection and they've been

play17:25

very very desirable

play17:27

instruments

play17:28

at the

play17:29

peak of

play17:31

2007 they were a lot more than they were

play17:34

today so they've probably still got more

play17:38

to climb

play17:39

um

play17:40

but at 50 000 pounds for a fender

play17:43

telecaster that's uh quite a bit of

play17:45

money but um

play17:47

in my opinion once you play one and you

play17:50

you get into the feel of one you'll

play17:52

discover that they're worth it and

play17:53

they're a pretty good investment to have

play17:56

so black guards have generally gone up

play17:58

over the past ten years 118

play18:01

return on investment

play18:03

broadcasters no casters which are black

play18:06

cards as well obviously they've gone up

play18:09

even more but the benchmark we've been

play18:11

using for this calculation is a 1953

play18:15

fender telecaster black card original

play18:17

finish

play18:18

and in

play18:20

excellent

play18:21

condition with original case you see the

play18:23

original cases

play18:25

is actually worth more than the number

play18:28

one guitar was worth in 2012

play18:32

stay tuned and

play18:34

you'll find out what this is

play18:35

[Music]

play18:37

right we're getting to the top now

play18:39

number two on our list of best

play18:41

performing vintage guitars

play18:43

over the last 10 years

play18:45

has been the fender jaguar

play18:49

from humble beginnings

play18:51

on the vintage guitar market to its

play18:54

current level it's shown quite a surge

play18:57

in popularity and value

play19:00

we were selling

play19:02

uh 62 jaguars which is what we're going

play19:05

to use as the venture marker on this one

play19:08

62

play19:09

um first-year jaguars

play19:11

in 2012 for four thousand pounds if you

play19:14

can believe that today you'd be looking

play19:17

at paying nine and a half thousand

play19:18

pounds for an original one

play19:20

in excellent conditions so that's quite

play19:23

quite a rate of return

play19:25

not only that you you get a lot of

play19:28

jaguars in custom colors

play19:30

it's a very very popular thing to want

play19:33

to have a custom color jaguar and they

play19:36

will have shown more uh increase in

play19:38

value than the sunburst ones obviously

play19:40

but again because there's so many

play19:42

different custom colors so many

play19:44

different values depending on what color

play19:46

it is we're concentrating on the

play19:48

standard sunburst ones here which have

play19:50

shown an increase in value of 138

play19:54

over 10 years

play19:56

[Music]

play19:57

so here we have it finally the number

play19:59

one vintage guitar

play20:01

which has increased in value in

play20:03

percentage terms over the last 10 years

play20:05

and

play20:06

again it's probably not so much of a

play20:08

surprise for a lot of you who've been

play20:10

following our posts following our

play20:12

listings

play20:13

the number one guitar which has

play20:15

increased over the last 10 years is

play20:18

gibson les paul juniors from 1954

play20:22

through to 1960.

play20:26

the one we're going to be using as a

play20:27

benchmark is a 1956 single cut there's

play20:31

some interesting things about the way

play20:33

these have increased in value

play20:35

back in 2012 we were selling single cut

play20:39

56 juniors for

play20:41

3500 pounds

play20:43

now in

play20:45

2022 if you wanted to buy one in really

play20:48

nice condition

play20:50

you'd be looking at paying around 11 000

play20:52

pounds

play20:54

which is an increase in percentage terms

play20:57

of 234 percent

play21:00

to give you some kind of a comparison

play21:03

that is nearly twice as much as a number

play21:05

two on our list in terms of um

play21:08

percentage increase

play21:10

the funny thing was uh back in 2012

play21:13

double cup juniors are worth more than

play21:15

single cup juniors and now it's uh it's

play21:18

flipped the opposite way round

play21:20

i'm not sure exactly why that is

play21:25

really don't know

play21:26

because there's been obviously players

play21:28

who play single card supposed to play

play21:31

double cuts but i don't think any one

play21:33

particular

play21:34

artist

play21:35

or group of artists have stood out

play21:38

promoting one particular type over the

play21:41

other so it's just a weird effect of

play21:44

price fluctuations

play21:46

i think

play21:47

anyway

play21:48

the less fall junior it's it's

play21:50

increasing in value a lot and again

play21:52

deservedly so

play21:53

people

play21:54

really cottoned on

play21:57

around five years ago

play21:59

after the markets

play22:01

crashed after the 20 2008 um price hike

play22:06

uh it became a very affordable guitar

play22:08

and then people started to really cotton

play22:11

on about five years ago how good these

play22:13

guitars can actually be and they're not

play22:15

just a one trick pony

play22:18

they

play22:19

you can do a lot with just one pickup

play22:22

and when you want to crank it up it's

play22:24

just unbeatable

play22:26

the uh that

play22:28

really hot p90 pickup close to the

play22:30

strings

play22:30

is a totally unbeatable sound and in my

play22:34

opinion it's it is one of a deserved

play22:37

top 10 in this list

play22:39

and one which

play22:41

one which a lot of people love and will

play22:44

continue to love in the future as well

play22:47

now the final thing i'd like to say

play22:49

with juniors is the 238

play22:53

increases for the sunburst ones

play22:55

if we took the tv finish ones into

play22:58

consideration then they like some custom

play23:01

color pre-cvs strats and teles have gone

play23:05

into the stratosphere especially over

play23:07

the last two covered years

play23:10

i've i don't think i've seen guitars

play23:13

increase so much as as these tv juniors

play23:16

have

play23:17

you'd be looking now of paying well over

play23:20

15 000 for a good example

play23:23

examples which we used to sell back in

play23:25

2012 for

play23:27

around four and a half thousand so it's

play23:30

uh it's it's it's quite amazing how

play23:33

those have increased in value but

play23:35

the benchmark we decided to use the 56

play23:38

sunburst

play23:39

junior and at 238 that's a pretty good

play23:43

rate of term i think in anyone's books

play23:46

so i hope you enjoyed our top 10 list of

play23:49

investment vintage guitars if you if you

play23:52

have any comments or suggestions

play23:53

yourselves as what you think may have or

play23:56

should have been included in this list

play23:58

then please drop us a line or leave for

play24:00

comments below and if there's enough

play24:02

follow-up comments to be discussed then

play24:05

i'll do another video about that

play24:08

uh generally speaking we think vintage

play24:11

guitars are a good investment

play24:14

we did some comparisons with other

play24:16

investments for instance if you'd

play24:18

invested 10 000 pounds in the

play24:21

in the uk stock market you wouldn't have

play24:23

got anything like the same return as you

play24:26

would with

play24:27

vintage guitars however

play24:30

there are investments in the states like

play24:32

the nasdaq which will produce even more

play24:34

return

play24:35

so it's it's a difficult one to balance

play24:38

um

play24:39

my i'm not a financial advisor and

play24:42

obviously running guitar vintage guitar

play24:44

store i'm pretty biased myself but

play24:48

we we're in the lucky position here

play24:50

whereby if we hold any stock we know

play24:53

it's not going to decrease in value and

play24:56

like a lot of car dealerships so um

play24:59

it's a good it's in a good position to

play25:01

be in if we uh if we've got stock here

play25:03

and we've never lost money on uh on

play25:06

guitars unless they've turned out to be

play25:08

not to subscribe

play25:10

but that's that's another story for

play25:12

another video

play25:13

thanks very much for watching i hope you

play25:15

managed to make it towards the end

play25:17

and please click the button subscribe

play25:20

ring the bell and we'll back be back

play25:23

soon with some more videos for you

play25:26

see you soon
