Takeaways
- 🏆 Drafting is a strategic process used in the Diamond and higher tiers of Brawl Stars where teams ban and pick Brawlers to create a 3v3 team.
- 🚫 Banning is an essential part of the draft where teams prevent the opposing team from using certain Brawlers, often those that are difficult to counter or are particularly strong.
- 🤔 First picks should be Brawlers that are not easily countered, typically controllers, to avoid being immediately countered by the opposing team.
- 🎯 Last picks are crucial for counter-picking, allowing the team to select a Brawler that can counter the enemy's composition based on their visible choices.
- 💡 Controllers are often good first picks because they can control the battlefield without being easily countered by assassins.
- 🗺️ Knowing the meta for each game mode or map is important as different Brawlers excel in different scenarios, like Jesse in Hot Zone maps.
- 🚫 Banning a Brawler you don't want to play against can be a strategic move, such as banning Frank who is considered overpowered by the player.
- 👍 Comfort and familiarity with a Brawler is important; it's better to pick a Brawler you're good with rather than an optimal but unfamiliar choice.
- 🛡️ A balanced team composition with a variety of Brawler types is recommended to avoid being easily countered by the enemy team.
- 💪 Upgrading Brawlers, especially meta ones like Angelo, is crucial for competitive play as higher levels and Hyper charges provide significant advantages.
- 🎖️ Patience and skill development are key in ranked play; players should be realistic about their rank aspirations based on their Brawler upgrades and personal skill.

Transcripts
all right what's up everyone in this
video I'm going to be teaching you guys
how to
draft and if you don't know what
drafting is I'll briefly explain it so
basically once you get to
Diamond um there's this new format where
basically your team bans three Brawlers
the opposing team bans three Brawlers
and then you pick six Brawlers total for
a 3v3
mode um and this video is just going to
be there to like help you with that and
kind of like the advice that helped me
to get to
Masters um and if you don't know who I
am my name is Ian and I make videos on
brawl star so um I did a little bit of
preparation for this video so um let's
let's switch over to the
notepad um so yeah I basically wrote
down some notes so the first pick and
last pick are usually like um where the
most
um where the most happens here so for
first picks I suggest Brawlers that
aren't easily
countered um which which is mostly going
to be controllers because you don't want
to be in a situation where you first
pick a brawler and then it just
instantly gets countered like that's not
good and then I'm going to switch over
here and just make a hypothetical draft
here on the tier list so
good examples of first picks let's say
you're playing gem grab for like a cute
angle or something some good first picks
would be
like Jean maybe because she has like the
push back brawler you're not going to
get like countered by an assassin and
her vision gear is good for the
bushes um also M's I don't know where
M's is it's kind of a lot
here okay wherever okay here we go
um also Gail is pretty good because of
his twister he can't get countered by
assassins um but yeah basically like
controllers are what you're going to
want for your first pick um so yeah
let's switch back here um for Last picks
choose Brawlers to counter the enemy
team um cuz you can see their entire
comp so you can choose based off of that
and I usually recommend throwers and
assassin
um let's say
that let's say you're playing like
penalty kick and I'm going to have to
make like a a hypothetical team here
let's say you're let's say they have
like like gaale BB and I don't know Bull
and let's say your team has like like
these two this this is not a good draft
by the way but I'm just like giving an
example of what you might see in game a
good good a good last pick would be like
barley or
um any like thrower because if you have
a map that has walls and like the enemy
team can't destroy it throwers are going
to do really well um another example
let's
say let's say the enemies have
like let's
say they have let's say they have like
two throwers on like a knockout map or
something
a good a good last pick would be like
let's say you guys have like
this and they have like this and I would
say a good last pick would be um an
assassin maybe Edgar you get the idea
cuz then you could just jump in and
easily counter them so the main idea
would just be for your last pick choose
something that counters the entire enemy
team if possible
all right let's continue okay so yeah I
showed you guys the examples okay other
things to consider which Brawlers are
good in each game mode or map so this is
going to be something that comes with
time but you need to know the meta for
each map or mode because each of them
kind of has its own meta for example
some of in a lot of The Hot Zone Maps
Jesse is going to be a really great pick
so if it's not banned and you have her
make sure to always pick her um just
kind of get to know the meta for each um
map also for example parallel plays Doug
is like really good I used to always
face in and get like destroyed all the
time so just just know what's good and
also knowing what's good could help you
um ban what you don't want to play
against so I would always ban Doug on
Parallel plays because I would always
just get destroyed by him so might as
well ban it um comfortability when
playing the with the brawler that you're
playing so you obviously want to
choose a brawler that you're you're good
with
like like even even if you have like
like a pick that that might be the most
optimal but you're not familiar with the
brawler you want to choose what you have
the most experience
with um so an example of that would be
like if we were playing a braw ball map
and I had the option of going Jesse over
Sandy sometimes I would just pick Jesse
because I don't I I upgraded Sandy
because she's obviously good but I have
obviously more experience with Jesse so
I would choose Jesse in that
situation
um going back to the notes so just some
general advice avoid low-l picks if
possible because you're just going to
have better stats with maxed out
Brawlers and Hyper charges but obviously
don't choose a bad pick that's maxed if
you have
like uh like a level 10 brawler that
could
counter I think you guys know what I'm
trying to say there um try to have a
variety of Brawlers on your team so you
don't want to obviously go like all
controllers or all assassins try to have
a variety so you can have a complete
team because like if you for example go
like three assassins they're if the
enemy team knows what they're doing
they're going to pick a couple tanks and
you're just going to get completely
countered
um yeah so some advice that would help
me make sure that you upgrade at least
two to three Brawlers of each type so
you always have options so with me I
made it to masters with only one thrower
upgraded so tick was my only
thrower that's why I really struggled on
like brawl ball maps that had
walls because I never had a thrower but
what you can do in this situation is try
to suggest to your teammates to pick
like a brawler like barley or Larry and
Lori that's what I would always do if
you don't have the thrower yourself I
would always try to suggest them to pick
one because obviously I I tick is not
really good on any brawl ball M so I
would always be suggesting
them to pick throwers
um so maybe instead of like having like
three long range Brawlers like Mandy
Angelo and Nani I could have instead use
the resources
on Larry and Lori I know he's level nine
but that's because I've been recently
upgrading
him but yeah a little bit of like
preemptive thought
there
um upgrade meta
Brawlers like this is kind of obvious
but
but I mean picks like
Angelo um I made a whole tier list on
this Colette you man uh Sandy you want
to have you want to prioritize upgrading
these because they're just going to do
well on all map CU they're
strong
so that's just something else to
consider um I kind of already said this
drafting skill comes with time and
practice so as you play more you're
going to see like what counters you what
you don't like playing against what's
good on a map so you'll know what to ban
and pick but that'll come with
time and also this is not really related
to drafting but be realistic about the
rank that you want if you
have if you
have like
no maxed out Brawlers or nearly if you
only have like five maxed out Brawlers
you're not you're probably not going to
get to Masters so just be realistic with
where you want to go with what you have
like I would say that even pushing to
masters with what I had was not very
optimal because obviously I only had
tick and a lot of the people I was
facing like in high legendary
had most if not all Brawlers maxed out
so they had an advantage in that way so
you just have to find advantage in other
ways or with your skill
so but yeah just be realistic and I kind
of forgot bans so I threw them at the
end ban what you don't like playing
against I said that already but I would
always ban Frank because I didn't like
playing Frank and this is the most OP
thing that the Frank players would do
they would ban Colette and pick Frank
and then our entire team would be
screwed so I would always just ban Frank
because I cuz that happened one time I
never wanted it to happen again because
it was so
broken so yeah
anyways let's let's hop into rank I
haven't played any games in Masters
since I hit it but I'm just going to
kind of I'm going to walk over to my
couch here cuz it's going to be a little
more comfortable but I'm just going to
show you guys like kind of my thought
process in the drafting phase and we'll
see how the games go I'm not going to
guarantee any wins but
um we'll see we'll see how we'll reflect
on the draft and see how things
go so let's see if we can find a game
here okay Bells Rock knockout I I love
playing knockout that's it's my favorite
mode but usually throwers are really
good on this map so
um I sometimes ban Grom on this map
because it's pretty annoying to play
against but I think I'm just going to
ban Frank because Frank is just broken
and I never want to play against him
so that's who I'm going to
ban they're going to ban tick that's
like the only like thrower I have so I'm
going
to kind of signal to my teammate that I
want to play
Tick also I do have the last pick
so a thrower would probably be good and
assassin they pick Mo
first which isn't great
like my teammate should probably choose
like a tank
here um Lily is all
right um I'll probably play
Gan because if I go if I go tick into M
that's not going to be
great who else do I have I could go
Angelo
but I never really play Angelo on this
map so I don't think I want to do
that okay my teammate has a level 9ine
pick that's not great also with maps
that like like this that favor throwers
I know I said have a variety
but see the enemy team chose two
throwers because throwers are just
really good on this map
so I'm probably just going to end up
going Jean
um yeah I think that's probably my best
option here like I'm picking a
controller on the last pick which is
kind
of not intuitive to what I said in the
advice
but honestly I could probably go with
the healing star
power yeah let's do this because usually
I go with the damage but if I pull the
tick or the dynamite I should be able to
kill them without that additional damage
so that's another thing like you want to
choose your star powers and gadgets
wisely so yeah I'm going to concentrate
here and
see so yeah I I play Gan a lot on this
map
so you want to try to avoid feeding this
your super and kind of chip down at
their damage
H yeah and that Mo just kind of got in
there see that's like the thing about
like playing like Power Nine you kind of
just get countered easily but our Lily
does get in
there and let's see if I can pull the
dynamite okay we got the
dynamite and the moo is going to jump
I'm going to get my my Gadget ready and
go near
Lily okay and also I kind of wasted my
ammo there with the Miko shot
you want to you want to make sure like
you shoot an ammo every time they hit
the ground because otherwise you're just
wasting
ammo yeah that was a good first round by
my team the Lily did good there the Lily
is honestly great against the dynamite
and the tick if she can get in there but
a lot of the time these game modes are
pretty passive because the throwers kind
of just sit
back um taking a little bit of damage
from the
dynamite bae you Al kind of want to see
like where your team is so you know when
to push
up okay so I get my super again so I can
play a little bit more
up let's see if I can pull this tick
okay I missed see that's that's bad but
it's looking like our Lily is just going
to get in
there our the mik is trying to push
up okay I'm this aim is not great
but I think our Lily should be able to
get yeah the timing is just really
hard okay so the mo goes up so we're
probably not going to all want to be
bunched in the center for
this okay that was really bad okay the
Lily goes into the shadow R and wins
so honestly I was not expecting the game
to go like this I was
thinking that we were going to get a
lost cuz usually two throwers on this
map does really well but into the Lily
it's
questionable so yeah I just need to do
better aiming my supers here I
guess and that's the thing you kind of
got to be patient especially with
Jean just make sure you hit
yeah not be too aggressive you're
okay as I say that my teammate just
dies but yeah definitely got to play
more passive
now okay our Lily our Lily is kind of
clutching okay and I'm shooting a
wall okay so at this point I'm just
going to be trying to charge my super
which I do
so I'm going to try to switch lanes so I
can pull the
tick I got to make a video about about
Lane
switching because it's also pretty
important okay all right very well done
by the Lily the Lily is
carrying and also you don't and knock
out you don't really want to waste your
super if you know you're going to win
the game cuz then you can just use the
next round
let's see if I can get the tick here
again see yeah that tick that tick is
kind of playing like playing up even
though I have my super he's trying to
push me back so I'm going to try and see
if I
can okay
so all right so I get the
dynamite so
yeah this is
looking okay I probably should have been
up there with my teammate but the Mig
just kind of went in or lily just
clutched so well played by the
Lily that was a good round that was a
good first
round okay so I'm not going to be
playing with anyone else right now all
right let's hop into one more game we're
17 minutes
try to keep this under 30 minutes
hopefully some of the games are intense
and they can get pretty
long another tip for ranked don't queue
into like ranked when you might have to
like go like like if if you if you have
to like eat soon or like or you're going
to get distracted don't queue into rank
because you're just losing like there
without even like playing the game so
it's pretty obvious but it happened to
me like so much so okay Bounty usually
longer range bers are going to do good
on this map the snipers I'm probably
going to
ban I mean I feel like Piper is a good
ban I'll ban
Piper throwers are also good to
ban actually I probably shouldn't have
banned Piper because my teammate could
have first picked it but I don't think
they were gonna pick it anyway so all
right they choose Angelo I'm probably
gonna end up
going he wants me to play Mo I don't
think that's a great
pick I'm probably going to end up going
Mandy or Jean Gan is just good in Bounty
because you can get the poles and
basically like get kills from that tick
is also pretty
good it's probably going to be between
Mandy and tick the thing is we don't
have any
throwers the if the col is smart they're
going to bring the wall break Gadget but
I still think tick can do well on this
map so I'm going to choose
tick especially if you see like the that
L figure on the left side if I can get
in there and kind of just sit behind
that wall I'm going to be able to do
well okay that that they're smart they
went Sam last pick that's going to
counter me but Tick's main counter is
Leon so that's another reason why I went
tick because
I'm not going to get countered as
easily so yeah I'd say that draft was
decent they they got Colt and Angelo
which are going to be kind of annoying
to deal with but yeah we'll see how this
goes I'm going to go to this
Lane so I don't really want to be
leaning against the Sam so okay well it
looks like he just pulled us all through
that was not great
all right we're our team is kind of
getting shut down
here okay our
gray okay I had to pop that Shield if I
didn't want to
die I'm not playing that well
here come on let me get this Colt
[Music]
uh-oh yeah the Angelo is very strong
here I do not want to go through that
portal trying to got to try to avoid the
CT and yeah it looks like we're going to
end up losing
here see that Sam had a really good play
in the beginning
so I guess we got to try to stay
separated I'm just going to although I
would prefer to L the left lane because
I get more protection from the walls I
think I'm going to try to go this way or
just I mean take it in a great Center
but I got to try to avoid the
Sam yeah they they're just pushing up
which is really smart and yeah they're
kind of
just running us all over
okay we do get some kills back there and
our Leon gets our super I'm not sure
what that um Angela was
doing yeah I got to try to get away from
that Sam
there got to use that short
range tick yeah I think I'm going to go
down
here
okay all
right our Leon is honestly doing great
right now the Leon is carrying I'm
getting carried in Masters guys
yeah honestly if I can deny these guys
from getting in okay nice oh my gosh no
our Leon got
killed okay
well I guess tick was not a great pick
looking back oh God he added me okay
let's see let's see what he has to
say let's
see probably nothing good
okay well I think he's in another game
so anyways um let's see how could we
have improved
that yeah okay
so probably Mandy would have been a
better pick the thing is
like yeah they kind of just went
aggressive and it made my tick really
bad usually if you can keep like the
enemies at a stalemate The Tick will get
a lot of value but if they push up it's
just easy to kill the tick
so Mandy probably would have been a
better pick
um I don't think Mo would have been that
good but yeah hey you win some lose some
it's another thing you're going to have
to learn to rank but yeah I hope this
video helped out and I'll see you guys
in the next one bye-bye
