The speaker then turns to the Bible, specifically John 15:9, where Jesus emphasizes that joy is a gift from Him, not something we can generate on our own. The concept of 'abiding in Christ' is highlighted as the key to experiencing joy that is 'full to the brim,' as explained through the Greek translation of the term used in the scripture. The analogy of the vine and branches is used to illustrate the necessity of our connection with Christ for bearing spiritual fruit, including joy. hi cornerstone family I'm IRA I'm
excited to continue the video series
that we're doing on the fruits of the
spirit I have the privilege of getting
to talk about joy and even though it
literally is my middle name
I often feel like I struggle to have joy
and especially right now in this time
with all the uncertainty all the anxiety
everything going on it's so easy to not
feel an abundance of joy right now and
what I tend to do and maybe you too is
we want to find a way to fix it
ourselves we want to find a way to get
more joy to feel more joy and sometimes
we can turn to our own self-effort if I
just try harder I just need to be more
joyful we want to sort of just drum it
up from within we might turn to things
that feel fun and feel comforting in the
moment or maybe just distracting from
some of the anxiety that we're feeling
and in hopes that that will lead to joy
and I know for me it can be productivity
if I can just feel busy and productive
even cooped up in our own house then
then I'll feel better about myself I'll
feel a little less anxiety and maybe
that'll bring me joy but just like
broken cisterns those those can't
actually hold water and satisfy us right
and so in this time or really just any
time we might be wondering so what's
what is the hope what's the answer then
how do I actually feel more joyful if I
I want to be a more joyful person how do
I do that and so we turn to the word and
we read in John 15 verse 9 Jesus is
speaking and he says as the father has
loved me so have I loved you abide in my
love
if you keep my Commandments you will
abide in my love just as I have kept my
father's Commandments and abide in his
love these things I have spoken to you
that my joy may be in you and that your
joy may be full
and so we see here that it's not
something we have to produce in
ourselves it's not something that we can
find by turning to an activity or a
distraction it's actually something that
Jesus gives to us out of his love for us
and when it says at the end that your
joy may be full
I looked at that word in the Greek and
it is just full to the brim complete and
overflowing full and so that's possible
it's possible because of Jesus because
of who he is because of what he's done
for us and so as we by faith believe
that to be true then one key word in
this passage is abide just a few verses
before this Jesus is using the analogy
of a vine and branches and he's talking
about how we have to abide in him he
says abide in me and I in you isn't that
amazing that that's even possible as the
branch cannot bear fruit by itself
unless it abides in the vine neither can
you unless you abide in me I am the vine
you are the branches whoever abides in
me and I in him he it is that bears much
fruit apart from me you can do nothing
so this whole series on the fruit of the
Spirit please don't here as something
that you need to grow in your own effort
this is fruit that is going to naturally
grow as we abide in Christ and he abides
in us
and so one of the most important things
is knowing how how do we abide in him is
it all just a conscious decision is it
all more you know more that self effort
and the truth is no it's believing by
faith the truth about who he is that he
really is God in flesh who came and
lived the perfect life we couldn't who
died the death we deserved for arson
though he was sinless and who rose again
defeated death and who ascended into
heaven and is alive today and so that
foundational truth of the gospel is what
allows us to be able to abide in him I
also thought of David's prayer in Psalm
51 David has been confronted by the
Prophet about his sin with Bathsheba and
he's repenting in genuine repentance and
he prays part of his prayer is restore
to me the joy of your salvation and
uphold me with a willing spirit so
repentance for our sin has to precede
the ability to abide and be filled with
joy but that can happen for all of us
and it can happen if you've never put
your faith in Christ if you've never
turned from your sin and turned toward
him your story can be while in a global
pandemic
while holed up in my house by myself
watching a video of a fallen bumbling
person who struggles with joy as well I
heard the good news of the gospel and
God changed my heart that can be your
story so the truth is that joy is only
completely and truly found in Christ as
we believe in faith that he is who he
said he is and so the end of that
passage in John Jesus goes on to say
more about the out workings of this joy
what happens with this joy when this joy
is full in us he says this is my
commandment that you love one another
as I have loved you so brothers and
sisters if this is us if we are in him
and we're abiding in him that we not
only get that joy that we can't drum up
on our own but then that translates into
love for one another we hope that these
videos are a help and encouragement to
you we miss seeing you we miss all your
faces we pray that we can be together
again soon and we look forward to that
day take care guys we'll see you later
