Transcripts
In 2022,
the UK was home to a crazy-cool,
wicked cultural adventureland,
The Island of Heroes...
a 10 day celebration
filled with colourful performances
that presented ancient Hindu stories
to 21st century children!
The event was surely special
for the 40,000 people who attended
but it was extra special for me.
That's because I got to help put the shows on their feet.
From lighting to sound control, dance steps to decorations!
Hundreds of volunteers
like myself, dedicated weeks
and months to the perfect the performances.
My name is Mishti
and my role was to perform a shadow play.
It depicted the story of Shravan,
a boy who cared for his blind parents
and fulfilled their every wish.
Volunteering for such a special event
was an enriching experience
Helped me develop myself
and gain a sense of purpose.
Let me explain...
First, every practice I attended,
and every play I performed
helped me learn valuable lessons.
One such lesson was to use my time wisely.
I had so much going on...
juggling between
school work, SATS preparation,
extracurriculars and commitments
to family and friends.
On top of all that, I had this performance!
We would practice twice a month.
and soon after, every week...
Now that's tough!
But diamonds are made under pressure.
During my rehearsals, I gave up sleeping-in
and Iโd work extra hard on weekdays
to complete all my schoolwork.
That left the entire weekend for rehearsals.
Instead of slacking off,
I would make sure to use every minute productively,
ensuring that I kept up with everything
and use my time wisely.
My commitment to serve
have helped me learn time management.
Till this day
I complete all of my schoolwork during the week.
That gives the entire weekend to decompress
and spend time with family and friends!
Another lesson I learnt was to believe in myself.
We all wanted to put on
a spectacular show, but it wasn't easy.
My group had to perform several times a day.
Weโd start strong,
But as the day passed, our energy rolled downhill.
At times, I felt like I couldnโt possibly carry on!
But then, Iโd see the other performers at work.
They went through the motions
just as many timesย asย Iย did.
But they still had that bounce in their step.
This motivated me to continue
with the same energy and excitement as day one!
Lesson learnt:
The key to confidence is believing in yourself
and having fun.
All that hard work paid off!
You see,
volunteering is about doing something good for others.
At the Island of Heroes,
seeing everyone smiling and having fun
was hands down the best part!
After one of my performances,
a crowd of kids gushed towards me.
They all had ear-to-ear smiles.
They werenโt just joyful.
They were inspired.
In fact, one of them told me he wanted
be a perfect son, just like Shravan!
Moms and dads also looked on proudly
with twinkling eyes as their
babies took steps in the right direction.
And, itโs as my Guru Pramukh Swami Maharaj said,
โIn the joy of others lies our ownโ...
The smile
on my audiencesโ faces made me smile!
Iโd helped these children and their families.
Seeing this made my heart swell.
I felt so warm and fuzzy inside.
Every act of volunteering
plants seeds of positive change
within ourselves and our community.
My experience helped me uncover the value of time.
The friends I made inspired me
to believe in myself
and I felt like a such a hero.
by helping children become better citizens of tomorrow.
If you're ready to learn and grow,
give volunteering a shot.
Who knows what magical adventure awaits YOU?
