3 security related threads on Twitter
and completed countless ctfs so now it's
time to make some money but how in this
video I'm going to answer this exact
question to the absolute best of my
ability this is the ultimate guide from
going from zero to six figures in even
multiple six figures through smart
contract auditing and for the first time
in a YouTube video This is actually not
clickbait getting to that level is
certainly not some four hour work week
from the beach it will take in fact
Massive Action and massive effort
combined with extreme perseverance on
your part but I'm here to tell you that
it is indeed possible and lay out the
exact steps that you need to take to
actually get there but first why should
you listen to me over a year ago I
founded Guardian Audits and during my
journey I learned how to go from
absolutely zero to getting my first paid
audit and then my second bigger audit
and a third and a fourth and a fifth and
so on until eventually I was able to
quit my job as a software engineer and
build out a team to deliver some of the
highest quality auto reports to the
biggest protocols in the space and so my
goal is to distill down everything that
I've learned from each step along the
way and give it to you so you can avoid
all of the mistakes that I made and
ultimately become a much better smart
contract auditor because of it alright
we've got a lot to discuss so let's just
hop right into it

all right like I said in this video I'm
not going to be holding anything back
I'm going to give you literally
everything I know about how you can earn
six figures plus as a smart contract
auditor the only thing I ask you to
understand is that this is not going to
be easy but with that being said I want
you to know that it is entirely possible
you are entirely capable of doing it and
if you follow these principles and
strategies that we're about to outline
you will likely do it far quicker than I
did all right we're going to cover four
things in this video first of all why I
don't like contests as a long-term
income Source second of all how auditar
a Time specific product and how that
affects the way that we need to think
about our lead generation and then third
I'm going to go over a high level
process to go from 0 to 1 and then
beyond with your personal web3 brand and
auditing portfolio and then finally I'm
going to cover exactly what I would do
if I had to start from zero all over
again okay so first of all let's talk
about why I don't like contests I don't
like contests because they put you as an
auditor in a commoditized position by
that I essentially just mean that you
are easily replaceable in the contest
environment it might be true that you're
able to make a good amount of money
right off the bat by participating in
some contests but unless you're building
a brand based on it it's not very
defensible over the long run more people
can come in and instantly start
competing with you on the same exact
Audits and eventually shave down your
Revenue instead what you want is a brand
that compounds and compounds and
continues to grow with every single bit
of work that you do and ultimately makes
you Irreplaceable as an auditor because
of the personal brand that you've built
up now even though I don't like the idea
of using contests as a long-term income
solution as an auditor I think they are
a fantastic way to get your brand
kick-started and get some initial
findings and overall just improve at the
skill of smart contract auditing and so
here's how you can leverage contests
early on to actually get this
compounding started as quickly as
possible for your web3 brand first of
all as soon as the actual contest report
has been compiled and delivered go ahead
and create a full report of your own
findings that you uncovered in the
contest so that you can show off some of
the cool things that you uncovered and
show that you know what you're talking
about when it comes to web3 security and
then second of all when you do place in
a contest make sure to share it all over
the place share it on Twitter make sure
you get the appropriate street cred for
doing really well in a contest because
this can immediately boost the
reputation on your personal brand in the
space and on that point it's also a good
idea to have the same handle on your
Discord that's going to be used in the
competition as is used in your Twitter
handle so that you can easily be
recognized across these platforms okay
great so before we officially dive in to
talk about the sort of on the ground
hand-to-hand combat of actually how
you're going to be selling Audits and
building your brand doing the legwork we
need to discuss a key high level quality
of the service that you're going to be
selling so the most important thing we
need to understand is that smart
contract audits are a Time specific
product teams only need audits at a very
specific time right when their contracts
have been finished and internally
reviewed and they're getting ready for
deployment and what we need to do is
structure our approach to getting
inbound leads and clients around this
fundamental fact and so this means
adopting an inbound sales process as
opposed to an outbound sales process so
what do I mean by that when we're
talking about an inbound sales process
we're talking about clients coming to us
exactly when they need our product or
service instead of us reaching out to
the client regardless of whether they're
looking for our product at that specific
time or not now obviously as smart
contracts are a Time specific product
we'll want clients to be coming to us
exactly when they need a smart contract
audit this means that we already have to
be known or connected to them through
our web 3 brand now of course building
up such a brand or really a web of
connections throughout the industry that
sends us inbound clients like this is no
small task it's much much easier to
Simply go and DM a bunch of protocols
and ask them if they need an audit but
because of the fundamental fact that
smart contract audits are a Time
specific product an inbound sales
process is going to be a lot more
effective than an outbound sales process
and so the key focus of the process that
we're about to discuss is really
centered around getting that brand and
getting that web of connections kicked
off so we can continue to nurture it and
grow it to the size where ultimately we
have ample inbound leads coming in all
right so without further Ado now that
we've covered those two things let's go
ahead and hop into the exact process for
going from zero to one and then beyond
with our web3 personal brand so first of
all just like we discussed stop reaching
out to protocols and just simply asking
if they need an audit first of all this
is approaching it from the wrong angle
as we discussed because not only are
audits a Time specific product we want
to nurture a connection with the
protocol over a long period of time
rather than instantly upfront asking to
give them an audit so instead what we
want to do is we want to
connect with the protocols and provide
them with free value up front what we
want to do is provide them value with
the expectation of absolutely nothing in
return just in order to start that
relationship off and be able to initiate
some connections in the space that will
eventually grow to be immensely valuable
and so just some ways that you can
provide some easy value to protocols and
initiate that connection is you could
release articles that just do a high
level technical breakdown of their
protocol and sort of give them like a
shout out do a thread on Twitter with it
and then go ahead and DM them and say
look here's the the high level technical
breakdown I did for you is there
anything you would like me to add or is
there are there other contracts you
would like me to do this for anything
like that you're just leading with value
they can feel the value they can feel
that you're giving to them instead of
immediately asking to take from them by
you know asking if you can do a smart
contract audit for them another thing
you could do is just do a free review of
their code and basically just DM them
and give them the results of your review
and of course if you find anything
interesting they might be interested in
reaching out to you for future audits
that they're going to have done and so
this way you're reaching out to
protocols and you're sort of doing the
legwork of starting to build your web of
Connections in the space that will
eventually grow and connections will
they get more connections until you
eventually reach a Tipping Point where
you have such a strong Network within
the space that you get inbound leads and
inbound clients without even doing
anything anymore and this really feeds
into the next part of the process which
is just building out your network and
this is not even just networking with
potential clients it's networking with
everybody in the space you want to hop
in the discords and meet fellow Auditors
you want to be on Twitter
and you know have discussions with
fellow engineers and web3 inhabitants
and this way like we said we're just
exponentially increasing the rate that
our sort of web grows in the space and
then the next thing you want to do when
you're building your network and sort of
almost just building an audience is to
be releasing all of the things that you
learn as you go so if you learn
something interesting about solidity or
maybe an interesting novel exploit go
ahead and write a thread on it and share
it on Twitter first of all you're just
doing a great service to the community
by sharing your knowledge but you're
also going to receive a lot more
connections because of that because
people can feel the value and they know
that it's going to be worthwhile
connecting with you next when you're
building out your network go ahead and
see if you can't join others as they do
audits in contests or perhaps even team
audits because these are the strong
Connections in the space that are going
to end up paying you dividend ends as
the years go on if you get really good
at working with a particular auditor
then the two of you can team up and
provide a much higher quality audit than
if the two of you just worked separately
right and similarly the people that you
work with might end up inviting you to
work on other private audits with them
okay and then the last thing that you
can really do to start building your
network is of course going to be to go
to Industry events right this is the
easiest way to properly build as many
strong connections as possible in even
just a span of a weekend so if you have
the ability and you're looking to really
kick-start the growth of your network
and the industry of course
make time on your calendar to go to
these industry events and then
throughout this process as you're doing
work in the space and you're reaching
out to new protocols and you're growing
your network make sure you're building
your brand and your portfolio in unison
so what you're going to want to do is as
you're creating all of these new reports
and as you're doing potentially contests
and uncovering findings you want to
accumulate all of this and put it on
your GitHub and make it publicly
available for everybody to see so that
you can show off all the great work that
you're doing and gain credibility and
once you have a really high level of
credibility it's going to be that much
easier you're going to have that much
more leverage when you go into a
discussion with a client about doing a
smart contract audit for them all right
so that's a high level process for
kickstarting the compounding of your
brand but I want to discuss essentially
what I would do if I was star starting
from absolutely zero to sort of kick
start my brand and then begin the
compounding as fast as possible so we'll
go through an exact framework of
literally the steps that I would take
each step and all of the actions that I
would take to actually go from zero to
one and then beyond so first things
first literally the first thing I would
do is set up my Twitter profile with
these three things first of course I
would have a name and a description that
makes it really obvious that I am a web
3 smart contract security perhaps even
D5 or nft or whatever your specialty is
auditor and then I would have a specific
call to action in my bio to DM if you're
looking for any sort of private audit or
code review or anything like that it's
important to have a specific call to
action for people to DM you because this
is how people are going to know that
you're actually accepting work and
looking for inbound leads and of course
make sure that you're able to actually
receive DMS on Twitter sometimes Twitter
will will get you like that and
you will have not been accepting any DMS
so make sure DMS are turned on and then
finally I would have a pinned tweet to
my profile that shows I have credibility
in the space this could be anything like
a valuable thread that breaks down a
very specific feature in solidity or a
particular exploit or perhaps even a
previous customer review of my audit if
I have one or maybe if it's even a
thread that just showcases all of the
work that I've done all of the contests
I've competed in all of the reports that
I have in my portfolio Okay so after I
get those first three things set up on
my Twitter profile here's what I'm going
to do I would do five threads a day
breaking down the technical details of
different protocols that I found on
crypto Twitter I would just go and I
would look up hashtag Phantom hashtag
avax or different sort of like defy
hashtags to find what are the newer
protocols that are coming out who are
they maybe they haven't launched yet and
they're looking for an audit or they're
going to be launching some upgrades or
something like that where they they
might need an audit and in the future
and I want to essentially just start a
connection with them and get things
started off right so for each of these
threads that I make on the technical
details of their protocol I'm going to
post it on Twitter and then go ahead and
share it with the protocol and basically
just let them know that you gave them a
feature ask them you know is there
anything that you'd like me to add do
you have any other contracts that you
would like me to add maybe I could do
this for another system of yours and you
know just like we said start out of the
gate by providing value then if they
respond positively and you know they're
very thankful then you
can go ahead and ask them you know well
what are you working on right now what
is what where your Project's at and this
basically does two things for you first
of all when you are actually releasing
these five threads a day you're going to
get a huge audience of people who are
actually interested in the technical
details of these protocols which is
going to immediately kick-start your
audience and ultimately grow to be an
extremely valuable asset and then
secondly obviously you're going to have
these connections with these protocols
kicked off and you're going to have lead
with value and so automatically that
imbues a certain level of trust and
appreciation and indebtedness to you and
so later when they are looking for an
audit they'll go and you know either
they'll remember you or you'll pop up on
their timeline they'll go to your
profile and they'll see that you are a
smart contract auditor for or higher and
a lot of times the projects that you end
up featuring and dming will not be
looking for an audit at that very moment
and that's why the important part here
is really just to initiate that
connection and I want you to notice here
how we're approaching it from The Stance
of how we can help them out by giving
them an audit especially in this
beginning stage you have to sort of
adopt the mindset that it isn't about
making money but in fact it's about just
purely helping people out helping teams
out with the valuable skill that you've
basically unlocked and trained up in
yourself and paradoxically this will
actually lead to an outsized return over
the long run now this whole process of
making threads and dming protocols is
not going to have a huge impact on day
one or even week one this is something
that's going to take days and days and
days of of consistent action on this
single repeated task before you build up
some semblance of an initial Network
that you can leverage to get your first
client and so after a few days of doing
this you're not going to notice too much
don't expect anything after the first
few days but after one to two months
you're going to be astonished at the
opportunities that begin to open up to
you now so you keep doing this and you
keep sticking to it and doing your five
threads a day five DMS a day until you
get that one team that is actually
looking for an audit and so when we do
finally get that opportunity we want to
capitalize on it and we need to have a
great offer for them you need to make
them an offer that they would feel
almost stupid saying no to and so here's
exactly what we're going to do
to give them an absolutely risk-free
offer that they cannot say no to this
offer it is pay per vulnerability what
you're going to do is ask for just a
small down payment and only more if you
actually uncover vulnerabilities in
their smart contract system my first
down payment was literally just fifty
dollars for an nft contract just fifty
dollars it's literally nothing for a
smart contract audit but this is not to
say that you should simply be cheap you
could still quote five thousand dollars
per critical bug and if the contract is
going to hold millions of dollars of
assets then that five thousand dollars
for that particular critical bug is a
no-brainer any protocol would be
overjoyed to be able to spend only five
thousand dollars to get that uncovered
and fixed Point here is to remove the
risk for the client if you charged ten
thousand dollars up front they're going
to have all sorts of outs running
through their head about if you can
actually give them an audit that's going
to be worth that amount of money with
the vulnerabilities that you're going to
uncover however if you just ask for
fifty dollars down and five thousand
dollars per critical and x amount for a
high and mediums Etc then it's going to
be a no-brainer decision to them from
their point of view the worst case
scenario is that they give you just
fifty dollars to do the audit and you
uncover nothing and the best case
scenario is they give you fifty dollars
to do the audit and you inform them of
multiple critical vulnerabilities that
they had that would have absolutely
wrecked them upon deployment but you
saved them and they would be absolutely
gracious to pay you thousands and
thousands of dollars for that report and
so the point is you'll deliver the same
report either way but by back loading
your price you create a risk-free offer
that the client is much more likely to
say yes to so you're going to start off
by charging a much smaller down payment
to get your portfolio and your web3
brand kicked off and then once you have
a more robust portfolio and you have a
stronger web of connections throughout
the industry bringing you in on leads
then it's time to increase down payment
that you're charging and actually start
to be a little bit pickier about the
protocols that you actually take on to
audit over time the projects that you
audit and the projects that you release
reports for are going to become a part
of your brand whether you like it or not
so you need to choose the right clients
that are going to protect your
reputation ideally you want to only take
on the clients that are really serious
about security and are willing to pay
you what you're worth give you the time
that's necessary for the audit and take
your report really seriously with all of
the findings that you uncover and then
of course the quality of the clients
that you get will be directly correlated
with the quality of reports that you
give and so it's a virtuous cycle you
get better clients who are willing to
pay you more money and give you more
time to do the audit which enables you
to create better reports and collaborate
with others who are even more skilled
which in turn of course gives you more
credibility in the space which gets you
better clients who will pay you more and
give you more time and of course you can
see this all just spirals up right but
it goes the other way as well if you
don't protect your web 3 personal brand
and you just take on any clients then
the cycle spins the other way and so we
need to be very protective of the
clients that you actually choose to
service and dedicate your precious time
to and so from this point on it's all
about creating those really powerful
relationships with the people that you
work with whether that be the people
that you actually collaborate with and
work with on audits or whether that's
your actual clients and so now all you
have to do is continue to cultivate
these relationships and continue to put
in The Sweat Equity and before long if
you haven't reached already you will
easily be in the six figures plus
