I'm Hana alov you may know me as a
content creator or you may recognize my
rather prominent family
name yes I'm a descendant of the
distinguished people who once owned this
iconic mansion on T blanga
Hill my alov ancestors were affluent
businessmen and illustrious land owners
but this is not a story about them
it all started with my cousin wearing a
special cabaya at her recent wedding the
bottom belonged to our late
grandmother I was told that such fabric
was used by royalty from punana in West
kalimantan a province in
Indonesia was my grandmother part of the
ponana royal family which means I could
have Royal Blood
[Music]
growing up I didn't get to spend a lot
of time with my grandmother who I called
Jah she lived in Johor and she passed
away when I was only 9 years old in 2007
from a pretty tragic accident
my dad is a man of few
words and I realize I've never asked him
whether we were related to
royalty so here goes so Daddy I know Jah
had connections with the royal family in
punana but how exactly was she related
to them so her
grandfather was the longest serving
Sultan before her uncle sultan the
second took
over that means she was a punana
princess oh yeah definitely she was yeah
so how did a punana princess come to
marry a man in Singapore H well
um as you know back then uh the Ala
family was very influential and they
hosted many dignitaries in their holiday
home in Alka mansion and one of them was
Sultan hammed II let's see whether we
have some photos
um there he is handsome buger um so he
suggested that his niece your
grandmother married the last of the Ala
sons who was unmarried which is your
grandfather and uh yeah so this was an
arranged marriage yeah it was uh she was
16 or 17 and this is a picture of them
in their wedding ceremony in Singapore
and did she have to cut ties with the
royal family oh not no not at all um as
you can see it was a huge wedding in uh
punana wow so your grandmother used to
go back to Pana every year and she used
to bring back a lot of the clothes from
the palace so at your cousin's wedding
they wore some of these
clothes so do we still have all of her
keepsakes oh yeah definitely your Auntie
fadila has the biggest house amongst us
all four siblings she was Ted to keep
all these things uh so yeah if you're
really Ken go and have a
look now that was quite a
revelation my grandmother was an actual
princess this means I do have Royal
[Music]
Blood I'm very eager to see what
Treasures my ponana princess grandmother
had left behind at Auntie dillas
hi
Auntie hi
Anna Auntie D is my dad's little sister
and the youngest of my grandmother's
four
[Music]
children Hanah these are the things that
J kept that were used in the Royal
ceremonies so these are the head wear
there was worn at that time which go as
part of the royal outfit wow so The
Sultans wore these ones these actual
ones yeah so these are the elements that
made up a jacket they went on the cuff
the collar yeah and the pockets ah so
this is what Basher had sewn on to his
stop at his wedding
yeah and then these ones are the head
wear for the
women and this one is very interesting
because it was given to Jah by her
grandmother wow that's
special and then these ones are the song
you'll notice that there's a lot of
yellow in a lot of the stuff that we
have here right because yellow is the
symbolic color of the royal family of
ponana but this all doesn't seem very
Grand and Glam like what I thought
royalty would be well that depends on
how you you perceive royalty so in the
ponana context royalty served a
ceremonial purpose us it had nothing to
do with wealth it was more symbolic so
Jah kept all these things because it was
important to her it was part of her
identity J brought all of her keepsak
with her but did she bring any of her
royal culture along as well no so J came
as a 16-year-old she joined the Ala
family and
unfortunately she came at a time when
the family wealth was just starting to
deplete oh oh how did that happen two
things I reckon the family LED very
extravagant Lifestyles nice cars uh
parties and the second thing a lot of
the property and land that the family
owned had to be let go at very low
prices so the wealth uh naturally
depleted and that's why we don't own the
Ala Mansion anymore that's
why so that's why Habib your grandfather
had to work very hard because the wealth
that his family had was not passed on to
him and Jah had to do everything that
any housewife would do the cleaning the
cooking the taking care of the kids
herself the Royal lifestyle that she had
in ponana did not exist here apart from
the fact that she had that regality
about her you know Hanah what's
interesting is that the ponana sultanate
is actually not made up of indigenous
malays they are made up of Arabs with
the very prominent name of alatri so how
did the Arabs become royalty in punana
that's a good question I would suggest
that you ask Auntie Lisa in fact Auntie
Lisa is in punana right now visiting
some relatives you should go and join
her did my Arab ancestors from the
Middle East wrestle land off the hands
of indigenous Indonesians to become
royalty
[Music]
the best place to dig up information
about my Royal Roots would be at the
source right I am here at Pana airport
and first of questions
[Music]
[Music]
so my ancestors who were Arabs from
Yemen became royalty in ponana a coastal
city in West kalimantan almost 7,000 km
away how did that
happened with an estimated population of
under
700,000 occupying a land area about 1
six the size of
Singapore punana started out as a
fishing Village at the mouth of the
kapas
river this is my grandmother's Homeland
a place where she held the title of
Princess hi oh hi are you Hannah yes I
am this eggy I thought I was meeting
Auntie liisa here but instead she has
sent a researcher to give me an
introductory overview of ponana this is
kwas River people of ponana realized
much on it even since the earliest
generation and they make use of it for
agriculture fishing trade and
transportation and you can see that that
is the Sultan of ponana they buil the
sultanate PS and also the malls and the
marketplace all over the Riverside of
kapas river I see the alqadri family is
in Arab family so how can they become
royalty in punana well let me explain to
you from the very beginning back in the
18th century there are groups of unmit
men coming from Yemen with one
motivation that is bringing Islam to
distant lands these people are the Arabs
carrying the family name of Al Kadri
alaf aaf and others and so here comes
Sharif Habib Hussein Al Kadri from had
of Yen he is a scholar and a traveler
coming into West Borneo in
1700s let me show you some
documents So based on one manuscript I
found it is stated that haben first
visited big cities like
bfia andang before going to Matan suanet
located in katapang and he married the
princess of Matan sultanate and stayed
there for years oh so he didn't go to
ponana ponana didn't even exist at that
time it was their son Sharif abdurahman
Al Kadri who later traveled on his own
and founded ponana in 1771 and then he
became the first sulan of
kadrian wow that means punana was
founded by the alcadis well yeah and the
six Sultan who Reed the longest in the
history of Kad sultanate for 49 years
Shar Muhammad Al Ki is your
grandmother's
grandfather oh wow so during the reign
of Sultan Muhammad the sultanate had
this strong and close relationship with
the colonial government and he was very
instrumental in modernizing the city but
sadly it all ended when the tragedy
occurred in 1944 a tragedy what happened
well on June 1944 the sultan including
the Crown Prince and members of the
royal families of the sultanate in West
Borneo are decimated and beaded by the
Japanese under the tragedy of
mandor my great great grandfather Sultan
Muhammad Al Kadri was falsely accused of
leading a rebellion against Japanese
rule during World War II as a result he
was killed together with 29 members of
the Royal Family in what was known as
the Mando Affair and this is where they
were all laid to rest at the Royal
cemeter or
bangam alayum
buum this is also where I am finally
meeting up with Auntie liisa my dad's
elder sister wonderful thank you so much
thank you so much you bye
[Music]
Hannah this is our family Cemetery
[Music]

[Music]
members you know Hanah your grandmother
was born in 1943 just one year before
the massacre where her father and her
grandfather were murdered
and right after the birth of your
grandmother's younger brother in
1944 your mother
died oh that's quite tragic it was very
thankfully they were both left under the
care of Sultan Hamed II and their
grandmother Hannah this is the grave of
Sultan hammed Al Kadri II how did Sultan
hammed II Escape them
massaco that is a very good question he
was a Japanese prisoner of war in
Jakarta literally being kept safe in a
prison talk about blessing in disguise
yes that was it and in
1945 they released him and he ascended
to the throne so it was Sultan hammed
thei that raised Jah Sultan Hamed II was
the father figure of Jah and we treated
him like our grandfather oh so you know
him quite well then yes I was 16 had a
holiday in his house and then when I
went home he passed away come Hana let's
make some prayers for sulan
Hamed so Sultan Hamed was one of the
co-creators of the Indonesia emblem the
guda Pancha
this emblem is usually put on the walls
of just about every government office b
tungala means Unity indifference
Indonesia has got so many ethnic groups
but they're all United this is a very
important
emblem in the year 2000 a group of
people decided to form the sultan hammed

early sketches the ones that Sultan
