Q & A
Why might someone need to take nutritional supplements even if they eat a healthy diet?
-Nutritional supplements might be necessary because industrial farming practices have depleted the soil of essential nutrients, making modern fruits and vegetables less nutritious than in the past. Additionally, the presence of chemicals like glyphosate and pesticides can affect the nutritional value of food.
What did the study conducted between 1950 and 1999 on 43 different fruits and vegetables find regarding nutrient levels?
-The study found a significant reduction in six key nutrients: protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin, and ascorbic acid (vitamin C), indicating that these fruits and vegetables are not as nutritious as they used to be.
What is the 'gut skin axis' and why is it important for skin health?
-The gut skin axis refers to the interconnection between the health of the gut and the skin. A healthy gut microbiome, composed of trillions of bacteria, can lead to better-looking skin with less inflammation and fewer breakouts.
How does ingesting collagen supplements affect the skin according to the studies mentioned in the script?
-Studies have shown that ingesting collagen supplements can improve skin elasticity, hydration, and increase collagen density, thus enhancing the overall health and appearance of the skin.
What is the role of antioxidants in anti-aging and why are they important?
-Antioxidants are crucial in anti-aging because they neutralize free radicals that cause oxidation, a process that contributes to aging. Consuming a variety of antioxidants helps protect the body and skin from oxidative stress and damage.
Why is fish oil recommended as a nutritional supplement and what does the science say about its benefits for the skin?
-Fish oil is recommended because it provides omega-3 fatty acids, which are anti-inflammatory and can moisturize the skin from the inside out. Studies have shown that higher intakes of omega-3 fatty acids are associated with less dry and atrophied skin.
What is the significance of probiotics in maintaining skin health and how does our modern diet typically affect our gut microbiome?
-Probiotics are important for skin health due to the gut skin axis. A modern diet, often lacking in fermented foods, can lead to an impoverished gut microbiome, which may result in poor skin health. Supplementing with probiotics can help restore a healthy balance of gut bacteria.
How does vitamin A contribute to skin health, and what forms of vitamin A are beneficial both topically and internally?
-Vitamin A is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that can protect the skin and eyes from photo damage and inflammation. Forms like beta carotene, retinol, and retinoids are beneficial when applied topically, while ingesting vitamin A supports overall skin health.
What role does vitamin C play in maintaining healthy skin, and how does it protect the skin from environmental damage?
-Vitamin C is essential for the production of healthy collagen and acts as a water-soluble antioxidant. Studies have shown that vitamin C can protect the skin from UV radiation damage and free radicals, contributing to less wrinkles and dry skin.
Why is vitamin D important for youthful skin, and how does it help protect the skin from damage?
-Vitamin D is important for a youthful appearance as it supports the immune response and protects the skin from UV radiation and cell damage. As skin synthesizes less vitamin D with age, supplementation is crucial for maintaining skin health.
What are the benefits of green tea extract as a supplement, and how does it impact the skin's health?
-Green tea extract is rich in polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants that fight free radicals and induce autophagy, a cellular cleanup process. Studies have shown that green tea extract can improve skin elasticity, reduce inflammation, and protect against photo damage and skin cancer.
Outlines
π€ The Necessity of Nutritional Supplements
Dr. Anthony Yunnan, a holistic plastic surgeon, addresses the common question of whether nutritional supplements are necessary despite a healthy diet. He explains that modern farming practices have depleted soil nutrients, leading to less nutritious fruits and vegetables compared to the past. Studies show a significant reduction in key nutrients like protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin, and vitamin C. Moreover, no diet can supply 100% of the recommended micronutrient levels, indicating the need for supplements. The video promises to discuss which anti-aging nutritional supplements are effective and why.
π§ͺ Scientific Evidence for Anti-Aging Supplements
The script delves into the science behind various anti-aging supplements, starting with collagen, which has been shown in studies to improve skin elasticity, hydration, and collagen density. Dr. Yunnan also mentions bone broth as a less scientifically-backed but popular option for skin health. Antioxidants are highlighted as crucial for combating the oxidation and free radicals that drive aging. Fish oil, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, is recommended for its anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to moisturize the skin from within. The importance of choosing high-quality supplements, especially fish oil, is emphasized.
πΏ Probiotics and the Gut-Skin Connection
Probiotics are introduced as essential for skin health due to the gut-skin axis, where gut health reflects on the skin's appearance. A healthy microbiome, composed of trillions of bacteria in the gut, contributes to better skin by reducing inflammation and breakouts. The script notes the scarcity of probiotics in modern diets and recommends taking a probiotic supplement, especially for those not consuming fermented foods. The summary also touches on the importance of vitamins and minerals, with a focus on vitamin A for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, both topically and internally.
π΅ The Benefits of Green Tea and Other Nutrients
Green tea extract supplements are discussed as a rich source of polyphenols, which are antioxidants that fight free radicals and induce autophagy, a cellular cleanup process. Studies have shown green tea's positive effects on skin elasticity, inflammation, and photoprotection. The video also covers the importance of vitamins C and D for skin health, with vitamin C protecting against UV radiation and promoting collagen health, and vitamin D being crucial for immune response and skin cell damage prevention. The summary concludes with a mention of a free guide to anti-aging supplements and an offer of a bundled supplement system available through Dr. Yunnan's online store.

Transcripts
there's so much confusion regarding
anti-aging nutritional supplements which
one should you take which ones should
you avoid is there any science behind
them I have the answers for you in this
video today my name is dr. Anthony
Yunnan I'm known as America's holistic
plastic surgeon I help health-conscious
men and women look their best by
teaching them a holistic approach to
health and beauty and today we're gonna
cover anti-aging nutritional supplements
what works and why so the first question
we need to ask is why should you even
take nutritional supplements if you eat
a healthy diet shouldn't that be enough
why should you even bother taking it
well the issue that we have is that our
soil has been nutrient depleted there
studies that show that our industrial
farming practices have depleted the soil
of essential nutrients and this is
resulted in food fruits and vegetables
that are not as nutritious as they used
to be in addition to this you've got
things such as roundup otherwise known
as glyphosate you've got pesticides and
other chemicals that are in the soil and
when they're in the soil this can also
be in the foods that you eat so our food
unfortunately is less nutritious than
ever
well there was a study of 43 different
fruits and vegetables and this study was
conducted between 1950 and 1999
and they found a significant reduction
in six key nutrients in these fruits and
vegetables these six nutrients are
protein calcium phosphorus iron
riboflavin and ascorbic acid otherwise
known as vitamin C so the levels of
these six key nutrients have decreased
from 1950 to 1999 there was also study a
seventy different diets they looked at
these seventy diets to see if any of
them may supply 100% of the RDA
recommended micronutrient levels in all
seventy diets every single one fell
short not a single one supplied a
hundred percent of what
is recommended so that shows us that the
food that we're eating if all you have
is a healthy diet you're not gonna get
technically the nutrients that you need
so what nutritional supplements should
you consider taking well the first one
to consider is collagen the big question
with collagen though is does ingesting
collagen does eating a collagen
supplement improve the collagen of your
skin and that really is a big question
well there are some studies that have
looked at this there's a double-blind
placebo-controlled trial that showed
that ingesting a collagen supplement
improved the elasticity of the skin
another placebo controlled trial found
that a collagen supplement improved the
hydration of the skin and increased the
collagen density of the skin so taking a
collagen supplement according to the
study actually improved the collagen in
the skin now if you've been following me
you also know that I did do a video
specifically about collagen supplements
do they work and what's the science
behind them so take a peek at that video
right up here well there are also
reports of bone broth improving the skin
now there isn't a lot of science behind
bone broth but there are so many people
I know of who've ingested bone broth who
take it and find their skin get better
from that they need to keep in mind
though with college of supplements is
that collagen supplements do appear to
improve the health of the skin do a pre
appear to improve the collagen content
of the skin so I definitely recommend
them but what I don't recommend our
collagen creams collagen creams are a
whole other story because the collagen
molecule is too big to get through the
skin so my recommendation is to pay for
a collagen supplement but not for a
collagen cream well what about
antioxidants it is very important to eat
a wide variety of antioxidants and this
is because one of the main drivers of
aging is oxidation and oxidation is a
process that is caused and pushed by
free radicals antioxidants are our
body's reaction and our body's
protection against free radicals they
neutralize free radicals so we're
exposed to these free radicals all day
causing this oxidation which ages us and
so the more antioxidants that you ingest
the better it is for you
well another supplement that I recommend
that you consider is something that a
lot of people are already taking fish
oil now fish oil is great because it
infuses your body with omega-3 fatty
acids and these are anti-inflammatory
fatty acids and these will soothe and
moisturize your skin from the inside out
but where's the science behind showing
that taking omega-3 fatty acids or fish
oil will improve your skin well there
was a study of 4025 women and they found
a lower likelihood of dry atrophied or
basically broken down skin in women who
had higher intakes of omega-3 fatty
acids so your skin is more moisturized
and it's more robust if you are taking
omega-3 fatty acids or fish oil but be
very careful with fish oil you want to
make sure that you choose a high quality
fish oil there are reports of fish oil
capsules that are rancid and that are
not good for you and make sure that if
you get a fish oil it's usually best to
refrigerate it after you open it up
probiotics are another nutritional
supplement to consider and technically
it's not really a nutritional supplement
but it is a supplement so why are
probiotics important well there is
something called the gut skin axis and
the health of your gut is actually
something that you will see in the
health of your skin there they are
interconnected and one big factor in the
health of your gut is your microbiome
it's the trillions of bacteria that live
inside your gut and have an impact on
all aspects of your health now what we
find is that if that microbiome is
healthy if it's imposed of healthy
bacteria you're gonna have better
looking skin less inflammation less
breakouts then if you've got a poor
microbiome the issue with our diet
however is that it is pretty much devoid
of these probiotics other than yogurt we
really don't get a whole lot of
probiotics in our food because we're not
really eating many fermented foods
anymore so if you're not eating many for
men
foods sauerkraut miso kimchi kombucha
kefir then definitely I recommend taking
a probiotic I usually recommend one with
anywhere from five to 15 billion colony
forming units anything less than that is
probably not really gonna make a
difference and make sure you refrigerate
that probiotic because typically you'll
have these are live and so by
refrigerating it you're gonna have a
better potential of those live bacteria
supplementing your gut bacteria to get a
better result well in addition to
omega-3 fatty acids probiotics and
collagen it's also important to take the
right amount of vitamins and minerals
and to supplement your body with the
right ones as well so we're going to
talk about some of them now vitamin A is
a very important one vitamin A is a
powerful antioxidant and you may
remember back in school your teachers
telling you that vitamin A was good for
your eyes well there was a study that
showed also that vitamin A is
anti-inflammatory beta carotene which is
a type of vitamin A a form of vitamin A
will protect the skin and the eyes from
photo damage and inflammation and there
was a study that showed that this was
the case well retinoids you may have
heard of Trenton Owen or retin-a or
retinol these are also types of vitamin
A so not only is vitamin A great to put
on your skin in the form of a retinol or
a threatenin but it's also great as a
vitamin to take internally as well
vitamin C is also very important to the
health of our skin well vitamin C is
essential for a healthy collagen and you
may remember stories of sailors who did
not have fresh fruits and vegetables
developing scurvy from lack of vitamin C
well vitamin C is a water soluble
antioxidant which means that you have to
take it basically every day because your
body depletes itself gets rid of any
excess that it doesn't need there was a
study that showed that vitamin C
protects your skin from UV radiation
damage and free radicals
okay so ingesting vitamin C can help act
as a protective for your skin
another studies showed that
intakes of vitamin C were related to
less wrinkles and less dry skin not
surprisingly because vitamin C once
again being a very important factor in
healthy collagen of your skin vitamin D
is also very important to having healthy
and youthful skin
now we make vitamin D in our own body by
exposure to the Sun but you can also get
it from nutritional supplements and we
all know it's important not to get too
much sun exposure because of the UV
radiation that you can get from it
well vitamin D is also essential for the
immune response it does so much in the
body that is so so important vitamin D
will protect your skin from UV radiation
and cell damage as well and it's
important to realize that our skin will
synthesize less vitamin D as we get
older so it's really important to take a
vitamin D supplement because most people
are fairly low in vitamin D now there
was a study that showed that low levels
of vitamin D were correlated to more
wrinkles more pigmentation and more
redness as well so taking a vitamin D
supplement super important for healthy
and youthful skin green tea just maybe
the most skin healthy drink that there
is but did you know that you can take a
green tea extract as a supplement as
well well the big thing about green tea
is is filled with polyphenols
polyphenols are powerful antioxidants
not only do they fight free radicals in
that oxidation process but polyphenols
also help induce autophagy autophagy is
cellular cleanup to get rid of kind of
old and damaged organelles and cellular
structures to help to rejuvenate the
body etapa G a whole other subject that
we're not going to cover today on this
video is something that is a driving
force behind rejuvenating the body and
anti-aging and polyphenols help to
induce that well there are some studies
that show the powerful effects of green
tea extract supplements on the body
there was a study that found an
improvement in the elasticity of the
skin from green tea supplements those
and that another study that showed that
green tea is anti-inflammatory and is
protective
now protects your skin against photo
damage and even skin cancer so we
covered a lot of information on this
video and if you are interested in
getting a summary of it so you don't
