this 1986 porsche 911 behind me

for two solid years in this video i'm

going to take you through the exact

repairs the car has required i'm going

to give you exact to the penny prices

for what each of those has cost and then

i'm going to share with you my all in

cost of ownership for this car over the

course of two years and i'm going to

tell you how much i paid for the car as

well before i jump into that content

bit of background on this 86 kind of

bring you up to speed in case you're new

to the channel i have owned this car for

right at two years

when i bought it it had 76 000 miles on

it it now has 84 000 miles and many of

those miles that i put on the car have

been done on back roads up in the

mountains so this car gets used it is

not a garage queen i think that the

costs of ownership that i'm going to

share with you today are definitely

reflective of having a car that gets

used i bought the car from a seller in

atlanta georgia i found it on the pca

classifieds which by the way that's one

of my favorite spots to to buy these

cars you generally find sellers who have

cared for and treasured their cars

so i'm not going to get into all that i

did a video on where to find a classic

porsche 911 and so i'll put a card up to

that video and you can go investigate

that if you're in the market and trying

to figure out where to buy one of these

cars i owned the car for two years it

has been

mostly trouble free you can be the judge

of that after you hear everything i've

had to do to it

compared to my 993 and my 964 it's

definitely been a lot less troublesome

and less expensive to be honest with you

to keep on the road

i have actually kind of a sidebar given

a little bit of thought to selling this

86

i started to write an ad

i took pictures for a for sale ad as

well and then i started digging into the

documentation i have on the car is kind

of you know getting it prepped

to to list all that information in the

ad and it just struck me

how clean this car is how well

documented this car is and so i decided

not to sell it at least for now i am

going to be doing some reversible mods

to the car to kind of make it a little

bit more exciting to me

those mods will be featured in upcoming

videos so i'll get into that on a

different day

that's a little bit of background about

the car i'll now take you through all

the costs of ownership here i'm going to

include as much as i possibly can in

terms of like what i know i've spent on

the car candidly i have not tracked like

fuel costs and all that kind of thing so

if you're super anal about that kind of

thing i'm sorry this video is just not

down at that granular of a level but

hopefully it'll give you a sense and a

feel for what it would cost to buy and

to own a car like this

um i am going to start at the top okay

so i had a ppi done on the car with the

compression and leakdown test before i

bought it that cost me 850

cost me 450 to buy a plane ticket to fly

down to atlanta and

buy the car and drive it back the hotel

cost me 250 and then i had to rent a

u-haul truck

um

for 450 and the reason is that the

seller kindly included a lot of parts

that came with the car when i bought it

so i flew down to atlanta bought the car

drove it home had to rent a u-haul go

back down there and haul all the stuff

home so what i'll call like my cost of

acquisition

two thousand dollars

shortly after buying the car i needed to

replace the tires this is something that

was discovered during the ppi it was a

known i had no problem with it

i ended up initially putting a set of

michelin as3 pluses on it they were they

were all weather tires weren't that

great i'll get into that in a minute but

those those tires cost me 848 dollars to

mount balance and a line cost 319. so

the total of that service was 1167.

i also decided that i wanted to get the

paint corrected and i'm so glad i did

the car was

unbelievable once i got that done and i

spent 900 on it i did a video on that

admittedly it's a pretty old video now

the quality is not super awesome but if

you're interested i'll put a card up

for you so you can go check that out

drove the car for a little while after

that paint correction and uh

headed out in a rainstorm which i think

you know if you've been around you know

that i drive these cars rain or shine

but unfortunately i discovered that it

had a sunroof leak so i had to take it

into the shop so

while it was in there getting the

sunroof repaired i had a number of other

things done to it which i'll list here

and then i'll give you a total to repair

the sunroof leak to get the transmission

fluid change to repair the battery

bracket to get an oil change and to

replace a low beam headlight power wire

the headlights were acting funny

that was right at seventeen hundred and

thirty seven dollars and ninety four

cents one other item that i had done to

it as part of that service i had the

door catch adjusted just a little bit it

wasn't catching just right

sidebar one flaw with this car is the

driver door has been painted i'm not

really sure what happened there but

whoever repaired it didn't get the door

aligned just right so i had charles my

mechanic

you know rework that to to get it more

in alignment that was the first service

um i drove the car for a little while

then a couple of other items came up the

battery began to get weak so i needed a

new battery the ac fan also started

making a clatter um something called the

squirrel cage it's in the front i guess

the fan spins in it and it became

misaligned and so it was just making a

bit of a clatter it was still working

but it was just making noise

i needed the clutch lever adjusted and i

had to do a brake fluid flush all of

that was 660

i touched on this earlier i wasn't

really happy with the as3 plus tires

that i put on the car and so i elected

to go ahead and replace those with

another set of tires

maybe a year after i put them on there

and i ended up going with yokohama

advance for a thousand and fifty five

dollars the mounting balance and

alignment was 218.62

for a total of 1274.46

now you need to bear in mind that you

might not buy two sets of tires for your

car in the span of a year right so like

that wouldn't necessarily be a clear

representation of what it would cost you

to own a car like this drove the car for

a little while um

went to a rally when i was at the rally

i learned a few more things about some

mods that some guys had done and true to

form when i came home i was like man i

want to make some changes and so i had a

fairly robust service done that i'm

getting ready to share with you i had my

mechanic put on a weevo classic shift

kit

i also i swapped the exhaust so the

seller included with the car but not on

the car a custom dual center exit

exhaust setup

and the exhaust looked cool didn't sound

that great after i had it put on but the

biggest killer for it is it didn't have

heat exchangers i did have my mechanic

put that on and i survived a winter

without

heat i have since had the oem exhaust

put back on but as part of this service

i had him do the exhaust swap as well

got a new shift knob front crank seal

intermediate shaft o-ring the motor had

started to to seep a little bit

new distributor cat new rotor

air filter and also the radio kept

blowing so i had the radio fuse replaced

and i guess he kind of repaired some

wiring there too but the total of that

service was 2 640 and 57 cents the most

recent service that i've had done on the

car um and again there's some work done

in here that you wouldn't necessarily

have to do it's been purely elective on

my part but this is the one where i had

him replace the exhaust put the original

exhaust back on

it's autumn here in the united states

and i i just can't face another winter

without heat

and so i had him put the exhaust back on

i had an oil change done i had the weevo

shifter needed to be adjusted a little

bit i kept nicking reverse when i was

going from fifth to fourth not good i

had him replace a window switch and also

my brake light kept blowing out and it

turned out that a wire had uh worn

through and was making contact with the

body so it just it kept blowing a fuse

so the total for that

was one thousand three hundred and

fifteen dollars and five cents so here

we are the total cost of ownership for

this classic porsche 911

11 295 dollars and 26 cents without the

cost of the car so that's how much it's

cost me to keep it on the road up to

standard where i wanted it with some

elective stuff some required stuff for

the course of two years

that brings us to a 5600

per year running cost

on this

3.2 now i want to add a little bit more

color to this for you because

i am able to pull information about what

it cost the previous owner to own the

car for six and a half years so

he ended up spending and he and i are

friends i texted him with this

information he ended up spending twenty

eight thousand dollars over the course

of six and a half years of ownership of

this 86 3.2 uh what that worked out to

for him on a per year basis is 4 300 per

year he did a pretty major project

somewhere in there it was about 12 grand

it was like suspension wheels tires he

upgraded the ac system

all of that and that ended up

getting baked in there so it actually

cost him less on an annual basis than it

cost to be so it cost him 4 300 a year

it cost me 5 600 so there you go

i did

commit to you on the front end of this

video that i would share with you what i

paid for this car you need to remember

that i bought this car before the air

cooled porsche 911

feeding frenzy

fever that has stricken the marketplace

and so um i think this car would be a

lot more today whether or not those

values hold steady i don't know that's a

different topic for a different day

but in november of 2019 i spent 47

thousand dollars on this car so this car

has cost me

over the course of two years to buy the

car and to carry the car right around 59

000 and so i'd love to hear your

thought process uh around that in the

comments like is that a lot is that

about right is that did i have i gotten

out cheaply um

we just would love to get your reactions

i think in this market how about this i

won't i won't project what i think this

car is worth i will say that i've seen

similar cars to this one shockingly go

for like 65 and 70 000 so

bottom line is i feel good about where i

am in this car financially and um you

know that just adds to a sense of of a

feeling of well-being about the car and

another reason to hang on to it

i also just want to touch on really

quickly how my ownership experience of

this 3.2 has compared to the 993 and the

964.

i think i might have touched on this

earlier it has been far

more trouble free than the 993 and the

964. the 993 i embarked on a pretty

major outlaw project in that car and

that cost me a fair amount of money i

don't think that's a fair kind of cost

of ownership

representation to talk about that when i

talk about what it's cost me to carry

this car for two years but the 993 has

been more expensive to own the 964 as

well i'll put a card up to my recent

video about what it cost me to sort

that car immediately after buying it

a lot more expensive so there you have

it i hope that you've gotten something
