play00:00

hey everyone it's Richard you're

play00:00

watching the plane Bagel a bit of a

play00:02

different video today I had a gap in my

play00:04

scheduling and I'm just getting over a

play00:06

cold uh so I figured i' i' fill the

play00:09

space with a bit of an easier kind of

play00:10

one-off type video If there's no

play00:12

interest in it no worries we'll see you

play00:13

in two weeks time uh but I want to touch

play00:15

on a topic that often comes up around

play00:18

the channel and that was sort of

play00:20

recently relevant uh because in June I

play00:23

went to my first event as a YouTuber

play00:28

I've gone to a lot of uh fin events and

play00:31

conferences uh for my day job but this

play00:34

was kind of the first thing I've ever

play00:35

gone to because I have the YouTube plain

play00:39

bagel Channel it might sound shocking

play00:41

given the size of the channel but I just

play00:43

admittedly haven't made much of an

play00:45

effort to uh get out of the house and

play00:48

there's not a whole lot of stuff nearby

play00:50

in Canada but recently I was invited to

play00:52

a social event hosted by Blossom which

play00:54

is a investing social media app uh in

play00:57

Toronto and there were going to be a

play00:59

bunch of Canadian Finance creators as

play01:01

well as uh some us creators attending uh

play01:05

so I decided to make the trip down and

play01:07

go to my first event as an ambassador of

play01:10

the channel and it was a really fun

play01:11

event I got to speak to a bunch of other

play01:13

creators in the space uh meet some

play01:15

viewers in person and I didn't get any

play01:18

uh nice photos but I'll I'll throw up

play01:21

whatever I have and while I was there I

play01:23

spoke to Adrian from Canadian in a

play01:25

t-shirt who runs a solid Canadian

play01:27

focused personal finance channel here on

play01:29

YouTube and also a really nice guy in

play01:31

person and he asked me why I still have

play01:33

a full-time job and I gave him an answer

play01:36

but I figured I would make a video out

play01:38

of it because it's something that does

play01:39

often come up given the uh size of the

play01:41

channel so thanks Adrien for the easy

play01:45

video topic now for those unfamiliar in

play01:47

addition to YouTube I actually work

play01:48

full-time as a registered portfolio

play01:50

manager in Ontario uh for a local Ottawa

play01:54

money manager uh where I do both

play01:56

portfolio management and investment

play01:58

research and for the past seven years

play02:01

while working at this company I've been

play02:03

sustaining the YouTube channel on

play02:06

basically lunch breaks lunch breaks some

play02:09

late evenings when I need to and uh the

play02:11

occasional weekend and because of how

play02:13

much the channel is growing I'm at a

play02:14

point where if I wanted to I could do

play02:16

this full-time it's it's a really

play02:18

privileged position to be in and I could

play02:20

even maybe make more money than I

play02:22

currently do if I were to say pump out

play02:24

more videos or just go full Finance

play02:26

personality MK this for everything it's

play02:28

worth and uh

play02:30

sell an ebook or something but there are

play02:32

a few reasons why I haven't yet done so

play02:34

and outside of just generally sharing

play02:35

the information I'd be genuinely

play02:37

interested in people's opinion on this

play02:40

uh because I have my own perception of

play02:42

things and these points but I'd be

play02:44

curious especially if you were a

play02:45

longtime viewer or someone who watches a

play02:47

lot of other Finance content what your

play02:49

thoughts on these points are so today

play02:50

we're going to go over the four top

play02:52

reasons Richard still has a boss now the

play02:55

first point here is going to sound

play02:56

really cheesy I acknowledge that uh but

play02:59

I

play03:00

actually like my day job I am a big

play03:04

Finance nerd the reason I started doing

play03:06

the channel in part was because I wanted

play03:09

to do more and speak more about Finance

play03:14

beyond what I was already doing in a

play03:16

full-time Finance job so I have a job

play03:18

that lets me work in an area that I'm

play03:19

passionate about I do both company

play03:21

research on the analysis side as well as

play03:24

client facing portfolio management I

play03:25

know a lot of people don't look at the

play03:27

finance industry fondly uh but I get a

play03:30

lot of fulfillment out of helping people

play03:32

with their finances and sitting down and

play03:34

sorting things out and I would hope that

play03:36

the channel does help with that to an

play03:38

extent especially given the the broad

play03:40

reach but there's something more

play03:41

tangible about uh working with someone

play03:44

individually and it's not really

play03:45

something I I'd want to do outside of

play03:47

the professional capacity uh for reasons

play03:49

I've kind of touched on before and I

play03:51

recognize that I have a really unique

play03:53

opportunity with YouTube uh but I also

play03:55

have a pretty rare type of job in the

play03:57

finance space uh not only is it again a

play03:59

sort of hybrid position where I get to

play04:01

do research in addition to working with

play04:03

clients uh but the employer has been

play04:05

incredibly respectful and helpful with

play04:08

the channel very supportive good work

play04:10

life balance I also uh have the

play04:13

opportunity to even do YouTube alongside

play04:15

this one of the reasons we don't have a

play04:16

lot of professionals on YouTube posting

play04:19

videos is that a lot of companies just

play04:22

won't let their employees do so because

play04:24

of the liability risk of of kind of

play04:26

having this side operation so given all

play04:28

that I'm not really Keen to give uh that

play04:30

up so easily so that's the first point

play04:32

is I like my day job and I have a pretty

play04:34

rare type of job in the space uh the

play04:36

second point is that I don't know that I

play04:40

want to post any more content than I

play04:43

already do I don't know if i' would want

play04:45

this to be my main job it's hard to say

play04:47

without uh trying it and knowing what

play04:49

the experience is like but posting one

play04:52

video every two weeks really feels like

play04:56

about as much as I I care to make and

play04:58

really the only reason I've been able to

play04:59

do YouTube In addition to a full-time

play05:01

job is because I've always kind of

play05:04

weirdly treated it as a hobby I've

play05:06

always really enjoyed doing video

play05:08

editing um and in University I had a

play05:11

teaching role uh which showed me that I

play05:13

really enjoyed doing that kind of stuff

play05:15

so I really enjoyed making content for

play05:16

YouTube yes I spend a lot of my free

play05:18

time uh making videos uh but I enjoy the

play05:22

process so it doesn't feel like work if

play05:24

I were to do it full-time however I

play05:27

think it would be a lot more draining I

play05:29

don't know if I have it in me to be a

play05:31

full-time Creator even in the space of

play05:33

Finance now am I open to doing more

play05:35

YouTube stuff and events of course would

play05:38

I box Patrick Bole at the next Creator

play05:40

Clash absolutely but Creator burnout is

play05:43

real and I know this is finance we're

play05:45

not making the most artsy Productions

play05:47

out here but I'm very fortunate where if

play05:49

I don't have the energy to make a video

play05:51

or discuss a given topic I don't have to

play05:54

and I have a really good balance with my

play05:55

full-time job uh where I have the energy

play05:58

to make these videos videos on the side

play06:00

and then way touches on the third point

play06:02

which is that because I don't have to

play06:03

rely on YouTube income I'm allowed to

play06:06

focus a lot more on the areas that I

play06:08

want to focus on out of interest rather

play06:11

than needing to make sure that I'm

play06:12

always making money with YouTube because

play06:14

YouTube AdSense is incredibly volatile

play06:17

some months you make more than you ever

play06:18

expected and you're on top of the world

play06:20

other months the amount begins to

play06:21

dwindle and you wonder if you made a

play06:22

mistake and if this is the end of

play06:24

everything you've ever built on the

play06:26

platform uh so needless to say it it

play06:28

jumps around a and it's nice that when

play06:30

that happens I don't have to stress

play06:33

really um you know obviously I want to

play06:35

see the channel do well and I like money

play06:38

but I'm able to set very clear

play06:39

boundaries around what I want to do and

play06:41

what I don't want to do uh because I

play06:43

don't have to worry about my monthly

play06:44

expenses not being covered if the

play06:46

channel doesn't do well and to be clear

play06:48

this isn't to suggest that you can't be

play06:49

a full-time Creator and find a good

play06:51

balance with these things and likewise

play06:53

to suggest that I'm not motivated by

play06:55

money I still do sponsorships on the

play06:57

channel but it's really nice not feeling

play06:59

a need to play the algorithm or uh take

play07:02

on a shady agreement or sponsorship or

play07:05

just sell stuff that I don't care to

play07:07

sell and as sort of subo to that I don't

play07:10

know how long the YouTube Finance gravy

play07:13

train is going to keep running I join

play07:15

the space at a near Flawless point in

play07:18

time not by any active choice of my own

play07:21

uh but just because a few years after I

play07:22

started posting videos uh we had Bitcoin

play07:25

come into prominence and other

play07:27

cryptocurrencies uh nfts the pandemic

play07:30

the lockdowns and The Surge of interest

play07:32

and content on retail investing GameStop

play07:35

in the mem stock rally and all these

play07:37

events brought a lot of interest that

play07:40

didn't exist before into the niche of

play07:42

finance and investing and I don't know

play07:44

if the space is always going to keep

play07:45

growing if in a few years from now it's

play07:48

going to be bigger or smaller from where

play07:50

it is today so kind of on a risk

play07:53

standpoint it's nice again having a a

play07:55

solid kind of career given the

play07:58

uncertainty about where Finance YouTube

play08:00

goes from here finally the last Point as

play08:01

to why I have a full-time job in

play08:03

addition to uh doing YouTube is that I

play08:06

genuinely think it helps the channel

play08:09

I've been working in finance for nearly

play08:11

a decade I went to school for it um I

play08:13

did my CFA and cfp

play08:16

designations I'm still learning

play08:18

something new every day in my job I get

play08:21

to work with people who have been in the

play08:22

industry for decades themselves uh who

play08:25

in most cases are more experienced and

play08:28

better educated than myself I also have

play08:30

access to tools and resources that I

play08:32

might not otherwise be able to access

play08:34

and I get to spend a lot of my workday

play08:36

researching topics that uh can later

play08:39

translate into helping the channel

play08:41

either directly or indirectly uh whether

play08:43

it just be improving my understanding of

play08:45

financial Concepts and economic Concepts

play08:47

as a whole uh or it something that

play08:50

actually translates into a later script

play08:52

for a video or a point to talk about uh

play08:54

such as with for example Silicon Valley

play08:56

Bank uh when that institution collapsed

play08:59

I had to look into it for work because

play09:00

it mattered to what we were doing and it

play09:03

later translated into a video so I know

play09:05

the term Synergy gets overused in

play09:07

business but there's a pretty good one

play09:09

between what I do for my day job and

play09:11

what I do for YouTube because they're

play09:13

the same topic I do Finance for my day

play09:16

job and then as an extension of that I

play09:18

post videos on Finance on YouTube so in

play09:22

a way my job does help with content

play09:23

generation and I would hope uh helps

play09:26

with the quality of content given that I

play09:28

can bounce ideas off of co-workers and

play09:30

if I've done a deep dive into a topic

play09:31

for work it gives me that better

play09:33

understanding for making a video and

play09:35

just overall like I said it's it's a lot

play09:37

of synergies so those are the four

play09:40

reasons why I currently do both that's

play09:42

not to say that will always be the case

play09:44

uh my priorities might change in the

play09:46

future they changed quite a bit when I

play09:47

had my two boys and you know there might

play09:49

be a point where I don't have the energy

play09:50

to do both and I focus on one versus the

play09:53

other but over time I have been able to

play09:54

manage the two in part because outside

play09:57

of getting more efficient with my

play09:58

channel I have really cut back a lot of

play10:01

the work I put into editing videos you

play10:04

might know that I used to animate a lot

play10:06

in my videos and that was before I had

play10:08

kids and before I I had a a PM rooll at

play10:11

my company uh but you might notice my

play10:14

editing style is is very uh refined

play10:18

these days very basic uh which saves me

play10:20

a lot of time in putting these videos

play10:21

together and gives me more time to focus

play10:23

on what I think matters which is the

play10:25

information but with all that being said

play10:26

I still have a drive to grow the channel

play10:29

and and try different things to bring

play10:31

new projects to the Forefront to box

play10:34

Patrick Bo and just try new projects and

play10:37

and things with the channel and over

play10:39

time it's always just been a getting

play10:40

more efficient with making these videos

play10:42

and the next big thing is going to be

play10:44

probably hiring an editor uh since I do

play10:47

most of my videos by myself I know you

play10:49

guys love my editing style and and the

play10:52

flare I bring uh but it's it's about

play10:55

focusing on on what I can add the most

play10:57

value with so despite everything I've

play10:58

said and and despite the intent to

play11:00

continue working a full-time job uh this

play11:02

is not to say that I'm done with YouTube

play11:04

or uh content with just riding the wave

play11:08

as it is I'm incredibly fortunate to

play11:09

have this type of following and my goal

play11:11

is to continue to um innovate whatever

play11:15

that means for YouTube uh to try new

play11:17

things and uh bring more hopefully

play11:19

informative content to the Forefront

play11:21

anyway that's a video and as mentioned

play11:23

at the beginning I'd love to hear your

play11:25

thoughts on any of it especially if you

play11:27

are a long-term viewer who has has maybe

play11:29

seen the change of content over time uh

play11:32

what your views are on it maybe you're

play11:34

of the mindset that you miss the crappy

play11:36

Little Richard animations or you like

play11:39

the planer style whatever it be uh would

play11:41

really be interested to hear in your

play11:43

feedback and given the nature of the

play11:44

topic I do want to take the opportunity

play11:46

to say thanks for watching and for

play11:49

supporting the channel and I hope this

play11:51

doesn't give the impression that I take

play11:53

this for granted uh because I don't this

play11:56

has been an incredible experience to be

play11:59

able to have any sort of following

play12:01

online let alone the size we've had for

play12:04

the channel so thank you uh for sticking

play12:07

around if if you've been with the

play12:08

channel for a while and for even just

play12:10

joining me today so we'll leave the

play12:12

video there like I mentioned let me know

play12:14

your thoughts we'll see you in the next

play12:16

one
