Sherry and Bill Steinker, a husband and wife writing duo, were given free rein to write a Toy Story script as a political move by Disney.

The Steinkers' draft of Toy Story 3 was titled 'Toy Story Christmas Mystery Project' and featured a sock monkey named Hei.

Hei, the sock monkey, was inspired by a real toy owned by one of the Steinkers' children.

The story involved an Agatha Christie-inspired whodunit mystery with the toys trying to uncover the truth behind a series of strange events.

The original draft was never pitched to anyone and was used as a placeholder while Disney negotiated with Pixar.

Tensions between Disney and Pixar escalated, leading to Pixar's decision to not renew their contract with Disney after fulfilling their five-picture deal.

Eisner believed Disney could make sequels to Pixar films without Pixar's involvement, leading to the creation of Circle 7 Animation.

Toy Story 3 is one of Pixar's best

play00:02

movies and stands as a crowning

play00:04

achievement of what the series could be

play00:06

what if I told you that the first

play00:08

version of Toy Story 3 was written in

play00:10

2002 as a bargaining chip against Pixar

play00:14

and might have been 2D animated well

play00:16

that's the movie we'll be discussing

play00:18

today with the help of the film's

play00:19

original writers Sher and billstein ker

play00:22

as we break down the development plots

play00:25

and cancellation of both versions of the

play00:28

who done it draft of Toy Story 3 the

play00:31

year was 2002 and it was a tense time

play00:34

between Disney and Pixar during the

play00:36

development of Toy Story 2 Disney's at

play00:38

the time CEO Michael Eisner made a

play00:41

decision that would Blindside the studio

play00:43

Pixar had recently signed a five-film

play00:45

contract with Disney a bugs life was the

play00:48

first of those films but Eisner argued

play00:50

that since Toy Story 2 was a sequel and

play00:53

the contract specified five original

play00:57

projects that Toy Story 2 wouldn't count

play01:00

toward those five films which left a

play01:02

very bad taste in Pixar's math meanwhile

play01:05

husband and wife writing Duo Sherry and

play01:07

Bill Stein ker were working on their

play01:09

show teachers pet for Disney they had a

play01:11

tight working relationship with one of

play01:13

their bosses David ston who had recently

play01:16

been promoted to president of Walt

play01:17

Disney television animation which also

play01:19

gave him jurisdiction of Disney movie

play01:22

tunes Studio we were really tight with

play01:25

David

play01:26

stainton um who then moved up in the

play01:29

world

play01:30

and at various times dragged us along

play01:33

with him stainton had drafted the Stein

play01:36

calar to write a Toy Story project for

play01:38

Disney movie tune but it wasn't Toy

play01:40

Story as you traditionally expected and

play01:43

I have some vague memory and I don't

play01:46

know if this is real or I dreamed it

play01:48

that the intention was that it would be

play01:50

a handdrawn animation like the toy tunes

play01:54

that it wasn't going to be CG do you

play01:57

remember that anything like that Billy

play01:58

no that that sounds about right while

play02:01

sher's recollection can't be directly

play02:04

confirmed it is worth noting that Not

play02:06

only was Disney movie tunes film output

play02:09

entirely 2D animated save for one

play02:12

project until 2008 but the Buzz Light

play02:15

Year of Star Command cartoon already set

play02:17

a precedent for 2D animated non-cg Toy

play02:21

Story Stories the duo was given free

play02:23

reign to write whatever story they

play02:25

wanted for the gang but the reason why

play02:27

they had so much Freedom proved to be a

play02:30

fascinating and political double-edged

play02:32

sword and was my understanding I think

play02:36

that that it was sort of a stalking

play02:39

horse they were never going to make that

play02:44

script but they they I thought they were

play02:49

going to use it against Pixar to say

play02:51

like oh we could you know we could just

play02:53

drop the dime and go do this even though

play02:56

I don't think anybody believed that but

play02:59

don't think anybody cared I think we

play03:01

were just holding the space I think

play03:04

there was a little winking yeah yeah I

play03:07

think there was definitely winking going

play03:08

on because we knew it but but I don't

play03:10

think anybody actually said it oh they

play03:13

almost possibly said it I think they

play03:16

joked about it a bit so yeah there was

play03:18

jokes they just cut us loose and said

play03:20

you guys yeah go make a mystery have fun

play03:22

do whatever you want I don't remember

play03:24

pitching anything to anyone ever no I

play03:26

don't I don't either I just remember I

play03:29

was like they

play03:30

they they didn't care I they they just

play03:32

wanted to have a script they wrote a

play03:34

script that was close to their hearts

play03:36

drawing a bit of inspiration from real

play03:39

life in the form of the movie's newest

play03:41

headlining character a sock monkey named

play03:44

HEI who was a real toy owned by one of

play03:46

their children in a story that saw him

play03:48

Woody and the rest of the gang in the

play03:50

center of an Agatha Christi inspired hun

play03:53

it mystery to that end their draft dated

play03:56

July of 2002 isn't even titled Toy Story

play03:59

3 with the placeholder name of Toy Story

play04:02

Christmas mystery project but before we

play04:05

explore how the film was killed revived

play04:07

and Rewritten as Toy Story 3 without the

play04:10

knowledge of the Stein kers let us in a

play04:12

hem Studios exclusive take a deep dive

play04:15

into Sher and Bill Stein kar's version

play04:18

of Toy Story

play04:20

3 Our Story begins on Christmas morning

play04:23

as Andy opens up his presents he

play04:25

receives no new toys only books and

play04:28

clothes in his room his toys are pumped

play04:31

no new competition for them however

play04:33

Sheriff Woody Pride convinces the others

play04:35

that they need to be there for Andy to

play04:37

cheer him up but as fate would have it

play04:40

Andy very quickly becomes a bookworm

play04:42

falling in love with the TJ kar's boy

play04:45

detective series Andy winds up watching

play04:47

a movie adaptation of one of the books

play04:49

curse of the Clock of Doom but he thinks

play04:52

that the book is better turning it off

play04:54

right before the ending to start a new

play04:56

book but the toys are enraptured by this

play04:58

story especially Buzz who even guesses

play05:01

that the villain faked his demise and

play05:03

why he did it shortly after this Andy

play05:06

his mom and Molly take an end-of-year

play05:08

trip to Grandma Alisa's Ranch Andy

play05:11

packing his books with his toys almost

play05:13

being an afterthought the toys bicker in

play05:16

the cramped suitcase but Woody is

play05:18

oblivious excited to spend some time at

play05:21

the ranch but he eventually snaps at his

play05:24

friends when their chatter becomes too

play05:25

much to bear remarking that life would

play05:28

be simpler if he didn't have to take

play05:29

care of everybody Grandma greets the

play05:31

family as they arrive but Andy's nose

play05:34

deep in his book she ushers him into the

play05:36

den plops him in gry's reading chair and

play05:39

gives him a reading buddy a sock monkey

play05:41

named HEI he used to be his uncle

play05:43

Andrew's reading buddy years ago she

play05:46

then proceeds to pull out a box of

play05:48

vintage TJ kar's books for him day turns

play05:51

to night and Andy never winds up

play05:53

unpacking his suitcase so Mrs potatoe

play05:56

head uses the peg on the back of her eye

play05:58

to poke a hole in the zipper unzip it

play06:00

from the inside and let everybody out

play06:02

the toys make their way to the den and

play06:04

ham raises the idea of burning Andy's

play06:06

books so he's forced to play with them

play06:09

again but Woody immediately shuts this

play06:10

down the gang finds Andy as he dozes off

play06:13

mid page with HEI trapped under his arm

play06:16

they Free the Monkey and he quickly

play06:18

recognizes Woody but the sheriff has no

play06:21

memory of him we learned that one

play06:23

Christmas years ago Grandma was going to

play06:25

pass down HEI to Andy but since the toy

play06:29

was older she wanted to wash him up

play06:31

first not reading the weather report for

play06:33

that day she hung him outside to dry on

play06:35

the clothesline where he quickly became

play06:37

the victim of a snowstorm and had to

play06:40

watch through the window Andy unwrap

play06:42

Woody Grandma found him a day later

play06:45

watched him one more time and put him

play06:47

back away everybody is sympathetic to

play06:49

the story except for Woody but HEI

play06:52

wouldn't expect Woody to understand he

play06:54

has a family to try and lighten the mood

play06:57

ham throws Andy's book toward the

play06:58

fireplace Woody lunges for it in the air

play07:01

he he grabs him so he doesn't fall into

play07:03

the fire but Woody does fall into the

play07:06

flame eventually getting pinned inside

play07:08

thinking quickly Buzz manages to save

play07:10

him and the book as Woody gets his

play07:12

bearings HEI tells him that he should

play07:15

learn to be more careful around fire

play07:17

wood he questions if him falling into

play07:19

the fireplace was an accident and he he

play07:21

tells him that everything is an accident

play07:24

unless he believes in fate the moment is

play07:27

broken as Andy's mom enters the room the

play07:29

Gang goes limp and HEI dives into Andy's

play07:31

arms She carries the new Duo up to bed

play07:34

with the toys sneaking their way back

play07:36

into the suitcase shortly after but

play07:38

Woody wants to keep an eye on HEI so he

play07:40

decides to sleep outside the next

play07:42

morning Andy and the rest of the family

play07:45

leave to go sledding by Uncle Andrews

play07:47

and the toys realize that Wheezy is gone

play07:50

everybody pairs off to search for him

play07:52

HEI offers his help but Woody wary

play07:55

shoots him down as everybody returns

play07:57

Woody enters the room panicked ham

play07:59

wandered off and he can't find him Woody

play08:02

accuses HEI for The Disappearance but

play08:05

the monkey raises the point that Woody

play08:07

was the last one with him as the toys

play08:10

continue their search one by one they're

play08:12

pulled into a closet with a wire hanger

play08:14

by Woody Who convinces The Gang That HEI

play08:16

is responsible for Wheezy and Ham's

play08:18

disappearance and him falling into the

play08:20

fireplace now riled up the gang charges

play08:23

out to attack the sock monkey but they

play08:25

sober when they hear Woody from another

play08:28

part of the house screaming out in

play08:30

Terror they find him standing over a

play08:32

pile of HEI colored yarn unraveled Rex

play08:36

is sickened by the sight and storms out

play08:38

Woody goes after him but manages to lose

play08:41

him too so the toys begin another search

play08:44

as Woody and B peep investigate he

play08:46

jokingly scares her to try and break the

play08:48

tension but B isn't amused so she storms

play08:51

off agitated wood he follows but he

play08:54

can't find her either he takes off tells

play08:57

buzz and Jesse about it then rushes to

play08:59

go go tell the Potato Heads but before

play09:01

he could warn the mister and mes they're

play09:03

picked off too Woody Buzz and Jesse

play09:06

realized that there are only two other

play09:08

places they could possibly look in the

play09:10

house the attic and the basement as buzz

play09:13

and Jesse searched the attic she climbs

play09:15

an unsteady stack of boxes to search the

play09:17

rafters but the Tower tumbles with Buzz

play09:21

catching her and Diving out of Harm's

play09:22

Way She thanks him and he blushes as she

play09:25

leans in to plant a tender smooch the

play09:28

lights go out and she's dragged off Buzz

play09:30

stumbles through the dark eventually

play09:32

bumping into a dress Maker's dummy

play09:34

ricocheting down the steps through the

play09:36

kitchen and down into the basement to

play09:38

find wood he at the breaker panel

play09:40

turning the lights back on and then a

play09:42

thought hits buzz like a ton of bricks

play09:45

it's just him and Woody trapped in a

play09:47

house in the middle of a snowstorm Buzz

play09:49

knows that he didn't do anything and

play09:52

Woody was alone for every disappearance

play09:55

he figures that Woody even probably use

play09:58

the wire hanger to unravel he Buzz

play10:01

accuses his friend but Woody denies

play10:03

everything and takes off frantically

play10:05

searching for his friends throughout the

play10:07

house to prove his innocence with Buzz

play10:09

chasing behind him the entire time Woody

play10:12

eventually falls out of a window into

play10:14

the blizzard flopping in the wind before

play10:16

eventually using his bandan as a parisel

play10:19

to carry him into the loft of the barn

play10:21

where he finds an old pole string chatty

play10:24

caty doll who doesn't seem to be alive

play10:27

in the way that our heroes are as Woody

play10:29

Cycles through her postering phrases she

play10:32

begins to eventually only repeat one

play10:35

tell me a story Woody eventually becomes

play10:38

frustrated with her mimicking her during

play10:40

this he knocks over some alphabet blocks

play10:42

and continues to mimic her arranging

play10:44

them to spell tell me a story but what

play10:47

he sees shocks him the top of the blocks

play10:51

read out I know a secret Woody pulls her

play10:54

string again I love you he rearranges

play10:57

the blocks who done it Woody's close

play11:01

let's have a tea party he has your

play11:04

family one more poll please change my

play11:08

dress the answer is in the book although

play11:11

the answer is incomplete Woody notices a

play11:13

book nearby a ratty copy of the curse of

play11:17

the Clock of Doom he picks it up and

play11:19

comes to a shocking Revelation he tosses

play11:22

the book as it flies out of the barn the

play11:25

Wind Blows Its tattered binding apart

play11:27

meanwhile Buzz tries to track down Woody

play11:30

in the blizzard but his metal bearings

play11:32

wind up freezing locking him in place

play11:35

just then an Airborne page from the book

play11:37

connects with him as he reads the page

play11:40

he also comes to a revelation Woody

play11:43

trudges through the storm to return to

play11:45

the house and finds Buzz Frozen Woody

play11:47

can't move him so he finds a jack rabbit

play11:50

rides him back to the house and drags

play11:52

Buzz along with him they make their way

play11:54

back and a now defrosted Buzz chases

play11:57

Woody as he climbs the trellis back in

play11:59

into the window this chase continues

play12:01

through the house before they eventually

play12:03

wind up in a tussle culminating in Woody

play12:05

stumbling off the mantle and into the

play12:08

fireplace Buzz is horrified just then he

play12:12

emerges he faked his unravel man as for

play12:16

the gang they're all trapped inside of

play12:18

Andy's suitcase Buzz lunges for the case

play12:21

but HEI Scoops him in a yarn net and

play12:23

shoves him inside with the others the

play12:25

villain picks up the case ready to throw

play12:28

it into the fireplace place with Woody

play12:30

when out of seemingly nowhere the

play12:32

suitcase is lassoed by a familiar pul

play12:34

string as Woody emerges from behind the

play12:36

woodbin he he's not the only one who

play12:39

could fake his demise Woody reveals that

play12:41

he and Buzz figured out that like the

play12:44

villain from curse of the Clock of Doom

play12:47

he faked his death which meant that he

play12:49

was still in the house and probably had

play12:52

everybody so Woody and Buzz staged the

play12:55

entire fight and enraged HEI attacks

play12:58

Woody with a fire poker lamenting that

play13:00

he stole the love of his life but he's

play13:03

not talking about Andy but his bride to

play13:07

be sh she he explains that years ago the

play13:10

Christmas night that Andy got woody as

play13:13

Andy went to bed Woody used a sock next

play13:15

to Grandma's sewing kit as a bed roll

play13:18

and ditched it right before Andy woke up

play13:20

Andy wants to play in the snow but he

play13:22

can't find one of his socks so he grabs

play13:24

the sock that Woody used which would

play13:26

have been shii and rushes outside

play13:29

Grandma searches for the sock to begin

play13:31

creating he's bride to be and the storm

play13:33

battered monkey watches in horror as

play13:36

Andy plays in the snow losing one of his

play13:38

boots catching his sock on a rock and

play13:41

unraveling it Grandma finally notices he

play13:43

he Frozen and unpins him from the

play13:45

clothesline and sees the strands of yarn

play13:48

on the ground unraveled before her life

play13:50

even began he he tries to plunge the

play13:53

poker into Woody but Buzz steps in and

play13:55

flips he to the others the sock begs to

play13:58

be thrown in the fire his life is

play14:00

nothing without shii the toys take pity

play14:03

on him and what he realizes that Bose

play14:06

can may be able to unot the yarn net and

play14:10

B realizes that wire hanger may work as

play14:13

a crochet hook our story comes to a

play14:15

close at the wedding of HEI and shishi

play14:19

as the bride reaches the altar he lifts

play14:21

her veil to reveal a God awful mess but

play14:25

he thinks she's beautiful Wheezy sings

play14:27

As the toys and the Jack Rabbit join HEI

play14:30

and shii for a first dance that proves

play14:33

the truth sometimes is truly Stranger

play14:37

Than

play14:38

Fiction after Sher and bill turned in

play14:41

their script they had a discussion with

play14:43

David stainton and Michael Eisner where

play14:45

they received some feedback and wrote

play14:47

some notes and in their own words I I

play14:50

just recall it being one of many many

play14:52

things that just seem

play14:55

to disappear into the ether and you move

play14:58

on do the next thing over the next few

play15:00

years Sher and Bill would go on to work

play15:02

on the film adaptation of teacher pet

play15:04

ston would be promoted to become the

play15:07

president of Walt Disney feature

play15:08

animation and tensions between Disney

play15:11

and Pixar would come to a head climaxing

play15:13

with Pixar after 10 months of

play15:15

negotiation with Disney announcing in

play15:18

January of 2004 that once they finished

play15:21

out the five picture contract with

play15:22

Disney they wouldn't be pursuing another

play15:24

deal with them ending their partnership

play15:27

amidst this chaos Eisner wasn't shaken

play15:29

by this loss in fact he believed that

play15:32

Disney didn't actually need Pixar as

play15:35

part of their current deal Disney owned

play15:37

everything that Pixar created while

play15:39

working with them which meant that

play15:41

Disney could make sequels to any of

play15:43

those movies without Pixar's involvement

play15:45

Eisner even figured that nobody would be

play15:48

able to tell the difference as 2004

play15:51

rolled into 2005 Disney quietly ramped

play15:54

up Circle 7 animation their new studio

play15:56

custom built to create Pixar sequels

play15:59

during this time Sher and Bill's script

play16:01

was Rewritten by David Gyan and Michael

play16:03

handleman many years later that version

play16:06

of the script would be released to the

play16:08

public by Script collector Yoshi killer

play16:10

2s and this led to the Stein calar

play16:12

finding out that somebody rewrote their

play16:14

script and then one day I think you know

play16:18

many many many years later I got a

play16:21

Google alert because of course I got my

play16:23

name on Google Alerts and to the effect

play16:26

of somebody like really dragging

play16:29

our Toy Story 3 and then um I went and

play16:34

looked up the whatever wherever it was

play16:35

there aren't that many um links to our

play16:39

names in Toy Story 3 and I read it and

play16:42

it was like wait they're talking about

play16:45

something we never wrote they're they're

play16:46

looking at a different story that has

play16:50

our name on it this new draft while

play16:53

still being a who done it that features

play16:55

boy and girl sock monkeys and a trip to

play16:57

grandma's house has an entirely

play17:00

different story now sporting the title

play17:02

of Toy Story 3 so before we explore why

play17:05

this version of the script would

play17:07

ultimately be cancelled let's take

play17:09

another Deep dive into the final version

play17:11

of the who done it draft of Toy Story

play17:14

3 Our Story begins on a train in the Old

play17:17

West Ham has been slaughtered now he

play17:20

can't squeal on whoever stole the

play17:22

Priceless hope marble Sheriff Woody

play17:25

Pride investigates his fellow passengers

play17:27

to find the perpetrator eventually it's

play17:29

revealed to be Rex buzzl ear bursts in

play17:32

to subdue the attacker but Rex reveals

play17:34

that he tied Jesse to the front of the

play17:36

train Buzz takes off to save her and

play17:39

Woody riding Bullseye chases rex on top

play17:42

of the train but Rex quickly makes a

play17:44

hasty Escape as the train runs out of

play17:46

track and the remaining Caboose begins

play17:48

to Teeter over the edge of a cliff

play17:50

Andy's mom calls him downstairs for

play17:52

breakfast Jesse flirtatiously teases

play17:54

Buzz that in Andy's head she was his

play17:57

girlfriend which leaves him totally

play17:59

flustered the toys realized that nobody

play18:01

actually found the marble and begin to

play18:03

accuse each other of taking it Woody

play18:06

tells everybody to not let their

play18:07

imaginations run away with them and

play18:09

chalks it up to Andy taking it but as it

play18:12

turns out Rex fell on it with that

play18:15

settled Woody makes an announcement

play18:17

Andy's room is getting remodeled today

play18:19

so for the night most of the toys are

play18:21

getting packed up but some of them are

play18:24

going to spend the night with Andy at

play18:26

Grandma's house everybody is blindsided

play18:29

except for ham who heard Andy's mom

play18:31

talking about it on the phone yesterday

play18:33

Woody felds everybody's complaints that

play18:35

Grandma is crazy and the house is creepy

play18:38

but Woody assures them and Buzz who's

play18:41

never met grandma that this isn't the

play18:43

case Andy the gang and his mom pull up

play18:46

to Grandma's very creepy house perched

play18:49

on a lonely Hill just from looking at

play18:51

the house Rex is worried if they'll even

play18:54

make it through the night Andy and his

play18:56

mom enter the seemingly empty house to

play18:58

find Grandma pour out of a closet

play19:00

wearing a stethoscope she was listening

play19:02

to the pipes because she thought she

play19:04

heard a humming noise inside as day

play19:07

quickly turns to stormy night grandma

play19:09

reads Andy a horrifying bedtime story

play19:12

leaving him and the toys spooked just as

play19:15

the power goes out the gang lays awake

play19:17

and Potato Head realizes that he left

play19:19

Mrs Potato head's lips downstairs she

play19:22

sent them along with him to keep him

play19:24

company everybody is on edge and afraid

play19:27

to split up so they they all head

play19:29

downstairs together as they retrieve the

play19:31

lips a stack of firewood tumbles toward

play19:33

Woody but Buzz pushes him out of the way

play19:36

which gets him pinned in the lit

play19:38

fireplace wood he tries and fails to

play19:41

lasso his friend out but when all hope

play19:43

seems lost a dashing sock monkey named

play19:46

Jack Challenger appears and using his

play19:49

trusty yo-yo manages to free buzz

play19:52

everybody thanks and admires Jack except

play19:54

for an embarrassed Woody who recognizes

play19:57

the toy but can't quite Place him and

play20:00

for a brief second recognition also

play20:02

flashes across Jack's face but he denies

play20:05

knowing Woody the power kicks back on

play20:07

and the toys are hit with an awful

play20:09

stench and out emerges another sock

play20:12

monkey the geeky lumpy gladiola Jack

play20:15

introduces her as his strange companion

play20:18

who follows him everywhere gladiola

play20:20

apologizes for her smell she fell in the

play20:22

cat's milk bowl a few weeks ago and

play20:25

being 100% wool she's pretty absorbent

play20:28

as it turns out grandma made gladiola

play20:31

her first failed attempt at a sock

play20:32

monkey she was relegated to a closet

play20:35

where she taught herself how to dance

play20:37

and hum very loudly as she does it Jack

play20:40

on the other hand claims to be bought

play20:42

from sou bees as a companion to gladiola

play20:45

who smitten tells the gang how Jack has

play20:48

traveled the world having adventures in

play20:50

Egypt and Shanghai and the North Pole

play20:53

just to name a few as Jack recounts

play20:55

these Tales to the others Woody is very

play20:58

annoyed and despite his protest the

play21:01

others want to arrange it so that Andy

play21:03

finds Jack and gladiola when he wakes up

play21:06

Woody pulls Buzz aside to tell him that

play21:08

he does not trust Jack but Buzz tells

play21:11

Woody to not let his imagination run

play21:13

away with him as they make their way

play21:15

through the house Jesse notices that

play21:17

Bullseye is missing outside of the

play21:19

laundry room Woody and Buzz find one of

play21:22

his stirups and as they progress into

play21:24

the bathroom they're ambushed by

play21:26

Grandma's cat perrywinkle who chases all

play21:29

the toys into the dining room Woody

play21:31

tries to ride him and is very quickly

play21:33

thrown off but buzz and Jack manage to

play21:36

subdue their feline foe as everybody

play21:38

reconvenes Rex notices that Slinky is

play21:42

also gone they eventually decide to

play21:45

return to Andy's room where it's safe

play21:47

Woody wants to leave Jack and gladiola

play21:49

in the hallway but Buzz protests this

play21:52

since Jack just saved his life as he and

play21:55

Buzz argue Woody accidentally hits and's

play21:57

door knock it shut locking them all in

play22:00

the hallway later Rex wonders why

play22:03

somebody would want to take them out and

play22:05

gladiola reveals that she overheard

play22:07

Grandma talking to Andy's mom telling

play22:10

her that there's not going to be space

play22:12

for all of the toys in Andy's new room

play22:14

he's only keeping two maybe it has to do

play22:17

with that everybody is shocked by this

play22:20

Revelation but she thought they already

play22:22

knew just then Grandma comes down the

play22:24

hall holding a bundled handkerchief Buzz

play22:27

and Woody speculate that maybe grandma

play22:29

was supposed to get rid of the toys

play22:31

before Andy got home and that Bullseye

play22:33

and Slinky might be in her bundle Woody

play22:35

Buzz and Jack follow Grandma out to her

play22:38

garden buzz and Jack continue their

play22:40

Bromance that's been building through

play22:41

the night leaving Woody dejected before

play22:44

eventually getting separated from this

play22:46

new Duo Buzz splits off from Jack trying

play22:49

to find Woody they eventually startle

play22:51

each other causing Woody to reflexively

play22:53

smack Buzz with a stick Jack appears out

play22:55

of nowhere and strings Woody up with his

play22:57

yo-yo and retaliation but Buzz de

play22:59

escalates the situation they come to

play23:02

find Grandma on a hot date inside the

play23:04

greenhouse with her Gardener Victor and

play23:06

it's revealed that inside of her

play23:08

handkerchief bundle was Banana's flambe

play23:11

they are swiftly yanked Away by Angus a

play23:13

garden gome who is very fond of Victor

play23:16

who calls them peeping Toms seeing Jack

play23:19

he stops a beat remarking that he saw

play23:21

when Grandma made him but before anybody

play23:23

could dwell on that gladiola Runs Out

play23:25

telling them that Jesse is also missing

play23:28

she went inside of a cupboard which

play23:30

turned out to lead to a dumb waiter and

play23:32

never returned the gang rides the

play23:34

mechanism up to the dark addict and

play23:36

eventually finds Jesse's hat alongside

play23:39

Scrabble tiles spelling out an ominous

play23:42

message as they return downstairs Buzz

play23:45

and Woody realize since grandma is

play23:48

occupied and Andy is sleeping the foul

play23:51

play is coming from within their group

play23:54

paranoia sets in everybody turns on each

play23:56

other and Woody blames Jack telling him

play23:59

that every time someone goes missing

play24:01

he's always unaccounted for and Jack

play24:03

tells Woody that the same can be said

play24:05

for him but Woody fires back that he has

play24:08

no motive if Andy was going to keep any

play24:11

two toys it's him and Buzz at this point

play24:14

Buzz decides that everybody needs to

play24:16

stay together in this room until the

play24:18

morning that way nothing could happen to

play24:21

anybody eventually Potato Head gets up

play24:24

to leave for Grandma's library for a

play24:26

book to pass the time telling them that

play24:28

if he's the per he'll be gone and if

play24:31

somebody else is the per and they're all

play24:33

together he'll be safe but Jack is

play24:36

uncharacteristically very worried Potato

play24:39

Head scans the bookshelf and comes to a

play24:41

shocking sight he pulls a book and

play24:43

begins to read just then the power

play24:46

briefly goes out as it returns Jack

play24:48

calls the buzz from the hallway and

play24:50

Woody goes to find Potato Head ham Rex

play24:53

and gladiola remain in the room

play24:55

unbearably tense but Rex tries to

play24:57

reassure the other

play24:58

as long as they stay together they'll be

play25:01

safe but in the time it took Rex to say

play25:03

that ham has also disappeared gladiola

play25:05

runs out of the room cowering as does

play25:08

Rex but once he hits the hallway he is

play25:11

also snatched Woody finds potato head's

play25:14

mustach as Buzz enters they see the same

play25:16

cryptic Scrabble message alongside an

play25:19

incomplete message from Potato Head

play25:21

Written In Dust trying to warn them

play25:24

who's doing this gladiola bursts in and

play25:26

tells them that ham and Rexx are gone

play25:28

Jack follows behind her leaving Woody

play25:31

even more suspicious noticing a nearby

play25:33

open heating duck that leads to the

play25:35

furnace Jack tells them that if Potato

play25:38

Head was taken there he's toast but this

play25:41

does remind him of an adventure he had

play25:43

on the edge of a volcano as he talks

play25:45

Woody notices potato head's book picks

play25:48

it up and finishes Jack's story for him

play25:51

as he talks before revealing the cover a

play25:54

safari of fear a jack Challenger

play25:57

Adventure on the bookshelf there's a

play25:59

whole series of Jack Challenger books

play26:02

detailing his adventures in Egypt and

play26:05

Shanghai and the North Pole just to name

play26:09

a few gladiola is shocked his real name

play26:13

is HEI one Christmas Eve a year after

play26:16

gladiola was made Grandma decided to try

play26:18

making another sock monkey for Andy the

play26:20

same year she was set to give him Woody

play26:23

she set him down on the wrapping table

play26:25

next to Woody who knocks a tub of glue

play26:26

onto him covering his head after an

play26:29

attempt by Grandma to wash it off draw

play26:31

him outside in a December storm and a

play26:33

quick trip to the microwave he he never

play26:35

got to Andy but watched Woody do just

play26:38

that and was put in the closet with

play26:40

gladiola and couldn't bear to admit that

play26:43

he was unwanted just like her so he made

play26:47

it all up Woody pins the murders on HEI

play26:49

but he tells Woody that he's no murderer

play26:52

just a fraud he apologizes to gladiola

play26:55

and leaves with her rushing after him

play26:57

Buzz thinks Woody should apologize to

play26:59

HEI because even if he isn't Jack

play27:02

Challenger he did save Buzz's life and

play27:05

he refuses to believe that he's a

play27:07

murderer Woody agitated tells him to go

play27:10

be with his new best friend Woody now

play27:13

all alone begins to collect the Scrabble

play27:15

tiles on the floor so he can frame HEI

play27:19

gladiola looks for HEI and eventually

play27:21

finds herself alone in the basement

play27:24

Woody hears a scream and rushes to the

play27:26

basement to find a pile of gladiola

play27:29

colored yarn he picks up the yarn and

play27:31

Mourns her just then buzz and HEI appear

play27:35

at the top of the stairs shocked at what

play27:38

they see enraged HEI attacks Woody they

play27:41

fight all through the house culminating

play27:43

in them spilling into the heating duct

play27:45

as he he throws his Yo-Yo at Woody he

play27:47

catches and Yanks it sending the monkey

play27:50

tumbling into the furnace Buzz saw all

play27:53

of it and deduces that Woody is the

play27:55

killer as Woody explains how this was an

play27:58

accident he didn't mean to kill he the

play28:01

Scrabble tiles fall out of his pants

play28:04

Buzz questions if Woody's going to kill

play28:06

him too before lunging at him and they

play28:09

fight through the house and eventually

play28:10

wind up on the roof climaxing and Buzz

play28:13

hanging from the gutter Woody reaches

play28:14

out and tells him he'd never do anything

play28:17

to hurt his best friend and deep down

play28:19

Buzz knows Woody is no murderer they

play28:22

reconcile but Woody slips on the wet

play28:24

roof and they fall off and as they

play28:26

recover Buzz tells Woody that he

play28:28

shouldn't have let he he pull the wool

play28:30

over his eyes which gives Woody pause

play28:33

gladiola said she was made of wool but

play28:35

the yarn in the basement felt acrylic

play28:39

just then the duo is captured and

play28:41

gladiola emerges revealing that she was

play28:43

behind it all because she loved HEI and

play28:46

that he'll always be Jack Challenger to

play28:48

her she couldn't bear to tell him her

play28:50

feelings but never had to share him with

play28:53

anybody until the gang came along today

play28:55

she totally made up the story about Andy

play28:58

only keeping two toys to have them turn

play29:00

on each other because when it comes to

play29:02

her and her love no one will replace her

play29:05

as his favorite but now that Woody got

play29:07

rid of him she's very angry with the

play29:10

garbage truck just down the block she

play29:12

disposes of Woody and Buzz in a garbage

play29:14

can at the curb inside is everybody else

play29:17

tied up with yarn Jesse manages to get

play29:19

free and untie everybody but they're too

play29:22

late they're thrown into the truck and

play29:24

wind up getting swept into its trash

play29:26

compactor meanwhile HEI managed to

play29:29

survive the furnace narrowly escaping to

play29:31

find gladiola who remorsefully tells him

play29:34

that she did something very bad as the

play29:37

compactor walls close in HEI scales the

play29:40

moving truck gets to the roof and

play29:42

manages to save his new friends Potato

play29:45

Head falls back inside but manages to

play29:47

hit a lever on the way down that opens

play29:49

the back of the truck they manage to

play29:51

escape on a Pizza Planet box but as they

play29:54

skip out onto the pavement wood he

play29:55

notices that HEI was snagged on trash in

play29:58

in the truck and didn't make it out so

play29:59

he lassos onto a nearby farm truck which

play30:02

pulls the Box alongside the garbage

play30:04

truck allowing HEI to escape the truck

play30:06

and reunite with his new friends the

play30:09

gang makes their way back to Grandma's

play30:11

house where gladiola apologizes she was

play30:14

jealous and what she did was wrong she

play30:16

tells HEI to go with the gang because

play30:19

she deserves to be alone HEI admits that

play30:22

he's loved gladiola this entire time but

play30:25

was afraid that she'd see through his

play30:27

lies they Embrace and walk off back to

play30:30

the closet together Andy returns home

play30:33

telling his mom how cool Grandma's house

play30:35

was her ghost stories her sock monkey

play30:38

toys and she even told him that

play30:40

sometimes at night she sees the monkeys

play30:42

walking around and mom shakes her head

play30:45

that's grandma crazy as ever Andy enters

play30:48

his new room a struck on the wall there

play30:50

are new shelves for all his toys Andy

play30:54

leaves the toys reunite and Buzz tells

play30:56

Woody that from now on it's the two of

play30:59

them best buds Woody agrees just not

play31:02

right now he was going to spend some

play31:04

time with B PE as Woody and Bo walk off

play31:06

Buzz notices that some of his equipment

play31:08

is gone Jesse holds it behind her back

play31:11

flirtatiously asking buzz if he's going

play31:14

to question her Buzz is flustered his

play31:16

visor steams up and as he fumbles with

play31:19

it he and Jesse tumble off the bed as

play31:21

they land on the floor Jesse leans in

play31:23

and they share a tender smooch maybe

play31:27

Andy's new room isn't so bad after

play31:30

all I really dig the Stein calar draft

play31:33

which I think overall is a tight story

play31:35

that really understands the core Toy

play31:37

Story characters while this draft does

play31:40

feel a bit grander in scope with some

play31:42

cute moments that definitely would have

play31:44

been fun to see on the big screen in my

play31:46

opinion this draft doesn't quite come

play31:48

together in the same way but Disney did

play31:51

now have a script in place and the

play31:53

studio ready to make it so that raises

play31:55

the question why did it get canned

play31:59

by the time news of circle 7 had become

play32:02

public in March of 2005 so did the news

play32:04

of their Toy Story 3 which would feature

play32:06

Buzz Lightyear being recalled to Taiwan

play32:09

and the toys shipping off to rescue him

play32:11

written by Jim herfeld clearly there was

play32:14

a change in Direction the who done it

play32:16

draft is dated December 8th of 2004 and

play32:19

as originally reported on this show in

play32:22

early 2005 hersfeld wrote a separate

play32:25

draft of Toy Story 3 for Circle 7 that

play32:28

featured Andy's mom getting remarried

play32:30

and the Gang becoming part of a blended

play32:32

family before he was ultimately brought

play32:34

on to do the recall draft which means

play32:36

that the window between the who done it

play32:38

draft's completion and circle 7 moving

play32:40

in a different direction had to happen

play32:42

relatively quickly however despite this

play32:45

move there were rumors that Disney still

play32:47

liked the script and had it in

play32:48

consideration to be Toy Story 4 if they

play32:51

ever decided to make it but with circle

play32:53

7 ultimately folding in 2006 we can

play32:57

never know for sure had Sherry and

play32:58

Bill's version been released as an

play33:00

animated side project 2D or 3D I think

play33:03

it would have been a fun adventure in

play33:05

the spirit of Toy Story of Terror or

play33:07

That Time Forgot as for the Rewritten

play33:10

final draft I would be more dubious

play33:12

especially pitched as Toy Story 3 so

play33:16

with that being said I think it's

play33:17

ultimately for the best that the final

play33:19

version of the who done it draft was

play33:21

never made but that's the story of the

play33:23

who done it version of Toy Story 3 and

play33:26

the end of yet another episode of can

play33:27

Goods I'd like to thank Sher and

play33:29

billstein ker for taking time out of

play33:31

their schedules to sit down and discuss

play33:33

their time working on Toy Story their

play33:35

insight and generosity was what made

play33:37

this video possible so again thank you

play33:39

so much but until next time thank you so

play33:42

much for watching be good to each other

play33:45

and stay hemus
