Summary

Q & A

Transcripts

play00:00

today we're going to be destroying a

play00:01

vacuum cleaner repairing a 1964 imp

play00:04

palador and doing our very

play00:07

first body filler tutorial I sure hope

play00:11

you got it right so uh here's the

play00:13

driver's side door it's actually not in

play00:17

too bad of shape got uh some

play00:20

Rust in here that's going to have to be

play00:28

patched oh

play00:30

stress crack right here that will have

play00:32

to be

play00:33

welded and this isn't too bad you can

play00:37

see where it's starting to to lift

play00:40

and bubble in this

play00:42

corner from

play00:46

[Music]

play00:52

rust I guess I'm supposed to weld up

play00:54

these mirror holes here at the

play00:58

top and as well as the side trim holes

play01:02

those all have to go

play01:04

away and the rest of this is actually

play01:08

looking pretty uh pretty

play01:11

decent near as I can

play01:14

tell but we do have the rest in this

play01:21

corner here which is I guess at the

play01:23

front we'll have to put a patch in

play01:26

here and here's the back corner you

play01:28

could see there was rust on the inside

play01:30

and this is bent over obviously so I

play01:34

don't know if this is going to need a

play01:36

patch we'll know once we peel the inside

play01:38

out but we will have to straighten this

play01:40

out

play01:41

[Music]

play01:58

obviously

play02:05

[Music]

play02:28

oh

play02:30

[Music]

play02:58

oh

play03:00

[Music]

play03:18

so what I'm doing is shaving the trim

play03:20

holes on this door and what I done is I

play03:24

just uh cut out some little circles out

play03:26

of 18 gauge sheet metal with some tin

play03:28

snips and then clean them up with a

play03:31

file then what I did is I taped some

play03:35

copper circles which definitely aren't

play03:37

pennies in case anybody from the

play03:39

Canadian Mint is watching and I just

play03:42

tape those from The Backs side and then

play03:45

I can lay my uh little circle in there

play03:50

and then I can just go around and weld

play03:51

that very slowly I used use masking tape

play03:53

to hold the Copper from the backside

play03:55

furnace tape works a lot better but I

play03:57

don't have any right now and I didn't

play03:59

want to go to the the store cuz it's

play04:00

going to the store is scary so we're

play04:02

just going to weld these up slowly I

play04:04

know some people like to uh just Jam a

play04:06

chunk of copper from the back and then

play04:08

just weld it but I find for uh anything

play04:12

any larger holes like this uh you don't

play04:15

it just adds too much Weld and the weld

play04:17

is the problem is the weld is harder

play04:19

than the surrounding metal so it starts

play04:20

to create some uh some problems there so

play04:24

I prefer doing it this way with these

play04:25

little plugs uh some holes like this

play04:28

I'll just zap up with the the Mig these

play04:30

are probably okay I'm not sure about

play04:32

these yet but any larger holes like I

play04:36

don't know what this is probably half

play04:39

inch or so this is a bit too big to be

play04:41

trying to weld up in my opinion so uh

play04:44

this is the way I'm going to do it this

play04:45

is just the way I'm doing it you can do

play04:46

it however you want

play04:55

[Music]

play04:58

though

play05:01

[Music]

play05:28

a

play05:30

[Music]

play05:48

[Applause]

play05:50

[Music]

play05:58

n

play06:00

[Applause]

play06:03

[Music]

play06:29

I got our little corner rust patch

play06:32

welded in and kind of rebent this Edge

play06:37

back we also welded up the mirror holes

play06:40

apparently the plan for this door is

play06:42

just to epoxy prime it and then drive

play06:45

the car as is an epoxy primer it's not

play06:48

getting any body work or anything else

play06:50

to actually get this door straight

play06:51

there's a lot of waves and dings and

play06:53

things so I would need a light skim of

play06:57

filler over the whole thing to get it

play06:58

actually straight

play06:59

and that's just noted the cards on this

play07:01

project or at least that's my

play07:03

understanding so I'm just kind of

play07:04

roughing in the metal work uh getting

play07:07

rid of anything obnoxious and the rest

play07:09

is just whatever it is but of course I

play07:12

was watching YouTube and I found this

play07:14

great new Bondo trick and I really want

play07:16

to try it out on something and I figured

play07:19

well I'll just uh Bond up a couple areas

play07:21

on this for free just so it looks a

play07:23

little better first area here of concern

play07:26

is where I welded up all the mirror

play07:29

holes there's like 800 extra holes here

play07:32

and the metal was all stretched and

play07:34

pulled out and beat in and pitted and

play07:36

whatever else so the proper way I guess

play07:39

to if I was going to be like metal

play07:40

finishing the out or whatever would be

play07:42

to put in like a patch here just get rid

play07:45

of all that Twisted bent up metal and

play07:47

then it's not just a bunch of weld there

play07:50

but there's a brace in behind where this

play07:52

mirror mounts so I couldn't like metal

play07:55

fish it out unless I cut that brace out

play07:58

which that's just a

play07:59

that's just an insane amount of work for

play08:01

very minimal gain and you know even

play08:04

though it looks pretty horrific right

play08:06

here if we actually put a a straight

play08:08

edge on

play08:09

it like it's actually uh really pretty

play08:13

straight there so

play08:18

that's you know it it all it would take

play08:21

is like a thin coat of filler to to

play08:24

strain that out stuff like this even

play08:26

though it it looks ugly it's actually

play08:28

you know straight and if you tried to

play08:30

like super smooth it and try to work all

play08:34

this out you'd end up just doing more

play08:36

damage than than what's already here but

play08:38

uh because this is the driver's door and

play08:41

you know you're going to see this every

play08:43

time you're get in the car even though

play08:44

it's just going in you know flat primer

play08:47

or whatever it's still kind of not

play08:49

really the nicest thing to look at so I

play08:51

figured we just clean it up a little bit

play08:53

for the guy do a little Bondo here and

play08:56

uh it'll look a lot better uh the second

play08:59

second area of concern is just right

play09:00

where this Edge was creased over here we

play09:03

got it back so it's actually straight

play09:05

now but if you look at like this it's

play09:08

all kind of ugly along here doesn't look

play09:11

all that great and somebody's already

play09:13

ground over this at some point in the

play09:15

past I'm not sure if it was just the

play09:17

factory that got a little carried away

play09:18

when they're grinding the edges or if

play09:21

somebody's repaired this before it got

play09:23

bent again but either way this Edge is

play09:25

kind of pretty thin here and pretty uh

play09:28

fatigued so again proper way I guess if

play09:31

you're like totally metal finishing this

play09:33

would be to cut out a patch and like

play09:34

weld it in all nice and whatever but

play09:36

again you don't have access to the

play09:37

backside so and this isn't actually like

play09:40

rusted so again like you're going to do

play09:44

hours of extra work just to make it 1%

play09:48

better probably not worth it

play09:50

but you see it is fairly straight even

play09:53

though it looks ugly it's just another

play09:55

one of those things where you know you

play09:57

don't want to keep working this to death

play09:58

it's already thin here and and Beat to

play10:02

Death so we don't want to make it worse

play10:05

by trying to make it better I guess but

play10:07

uh just so it looks a little better

play10:09

we'll also do a little little Bondo work

play10:12

here just to just to get it that uh make

play10:16

it more presentable I

play10:23

suppose it's actually a very exciting

play10:26

day this is the first Bondo tutorial

play10:28

we've ever done on the

play10:33

channel haven't done one before because

play10:36

I see there's a lot of other people

play10:37

doing it already and I thought it was a

play10:39

fairly straightforward process until I

play10:41

discovered this new technique that I

play10:44

want to share with

play10:45

you plus it's also an easy way to uh get

play10:49

views on

play10:50

YouTube and you guys know me I'll do

play10:52

anything for

play10:58

views

play11:01

all right so we got this all cleaned off

play11:02

with wax and grease

play11:04

remover uh then we blew it off just made

play11:07

sure we got it as clean as we possibly

play11:08

can get it and now this next step is

play11:11

extremely

play11:12

important uh can't remember why oh uh

play11:16

yeah uh if you don't do this next step

play11:18

the Bondo won't stick let's get into

play11:27

it

play13:07

all right finally Bondo time we got

play13:09

everything cleaned up pretty excited how

play13:13

about

play13:15

you so this is the new Bondo we're going

play13:19

to be using I got this out of the back

play13:22

of a guy's van and he told me this is

play13:24

like this is the stuff this is the this

play13:26

is the best Bondo you can buy it's like

play13:29

Space Age and everything astronauts use

play13:32

it so uh we're going to give it a try

play13:34

I'm uh I'm just uh really looking

play13:37

forward to this let's

play13:57

go

play14:18

[Applause]

play14:29

[Applause]

play14:38

this is a bit of a custom job here oh sh

play14:41

Hammer

play14:44

quick oh go

play14:49

yes oh don't you hate it when your metal

play14:53

work starts to hard off like

play14:57

that

play15:15

[Applause]

play15:19

Kyle you old click baiter probably

play15:21

figured it out by now haven't you we're

play15:24

actually using uh lead we're not using

play15:27

Bondo it's not some new kind of Bondo

play15:30

just lead good oldfashioned lead uh it's

play15:34

actually a mixture of lead and Tin 70%

play15:37

lead 30% tin I know it's oh no it's lead

play15:42

it's most horrifically dangerous thing

play15:45

ever way I figure it uh people have been

play15:48

using lead and Tin for the last couple

play15:51

thousand years and while it's probably

play15:54

not the uh greatest thing in the world

play15:57

for human

play15:59

consumption that's the that's the key I

play16:01

guess is just don't consume it you know

play16:04

uh don't don't eat it and uh don't

play16:06

breath the

play16:08

fumes and probably not worse than

play16:11

anything else that we're exposed to or

play16:14

that we put in our system on a regular

play16:16

basis now the Romans there they put it

play16:19

in their their wine and their food and

play16:22

uh well I mean uh things didn't turn out

play16:25

too good for them so probably wouldn't

play16:27

recommend that but uh teach their own I

play16:31

suppose supposedly long-term exposure or

play16:35

long-term use of this will uh cause uh

play16:40

brain damage and erratic Behavior but uh

play16:45

I'm not totally convinced on

play16:57

that

play17:01

[Music]

play18:41

[Applause]

play18:45

[Music]

play19:57

I

play20:57

all

play23:26

[Applause]

play25:38

[Music]

play26:26

e

play27:24

[Music]

play27:26

the

play27:56

n

play28:26

for

play28:32

[Music]

play29:55

so this uh top area of the door here

play29:57

that we're working on it's you can see

play29:59

it's concave here it's got a dish to it

play30:02

so uh we're

play30:04

using so on that we're using one of

play30:07

these uh kind of half round Vixen

play30:11

files um and it just kind

play30:14

of gets into

play30:16

there fairly well I think I got this

play30:20

yeah this this file is from

play30:23

Eastwood and yeah it's just a half round

play30:26

fix and file you can see how the the

play30:29

teeth are curved to the side to allow

play30:32

the shavings from the the lead to kind

play30:35

of not get all caught up in here and all

play30:37

munged up for the flat surfaces we just

play30:41

use you guessed it a flat Vixen file

play30:45

same deal curved teeth on it lets all

play30:49

the shavings pass out the sides so it

play30:51

doesn't get clogged up and the flat

play30:54

surface obviously prevents you from

play30:57

filing a giant dish into it this uh

play31:00

doesn't really work as well on this dish

play31:04

surface you can see how there's a gap

play31:05

here so all this would do is just kind

play31:08

of dig a Groove into both sides without

play31:11

actually and then you'd end up with an

play31:13

area that's overfilled in the middle so

play31:15

that's where this uh this curvy one

play31:18

comes in

play31:20

handy yes it

play31:26

does

play32:26

is

play32:40

so you see all these uh large metal

play32:43

shavings from filing down the lead uh

play32:47

you don't want to eat that I know it's

play32:49

tempting but

play32:51

uh just don't eat this

play32:56

okay

play32:59

like uh this here is the modern

play33:02

alternative and like uh apparently some

play33:06

people say that this is somehow safer

play33:07

for you but let's just like uh look at

play33:10

these these this whole can is basically

play33:12

like a giant warning label and you don't

play33:14

see any warning labels on this

play33:16

so in a day where literally food and

play33:19

everything else has warning labels on it

play33:21

like

play33:22

uh I guess how bad can it be right but

play33:26

like look at this like uh if you use

play33:30

this modern body filler here um you'll

play33:33

spontaneously comust and if that's not

play33:36

enough uh you'll be attacked by Pirates

play33:39

oh no that sounds terrible and then says

play33:43

down here danger flammable SL poison

play33:50

okay but I thought lead was poison I

play33:53

thought this was good for

play33:54

me ah look at all this contents may

play33:57

catch fire contents may be harmful May

play34:00

irritate eyes and skin do not swallow do

play34:02

not smoke do not you only had to put

play34:05

that on there cuz somebody actually

play34:06

tried

play34:07

that if swallowed contact Poison Control

play34:11

Center or doctor

play34:13

immediately so for any of those safety

play34:16

Steves out there that feel the need to

play34:18

lecture me on uh on what I do and and uh

play34:22

the things I use uh prepare to be

play34:25

promptly ignored and door publicly

play34:29

ridiculed all right well here's the

play34:31

completed door as far as we're taking it

play34:33

anyways there's our freebie shoo job

play34:37

there looks a little uh more presentable

play34:41

I guess than a bunch of ugly welds and

play34:43

whatever I think I already mentioned

play34:44

that to do this you know if you're like

play34:46

trying to metal finish this out You'

play34:47

probably just cut out that area cuz

play34:49

there were so many holes in it and it

play34:50

all buggered up and just weld in a piece

play34:53

but then the problem is that we had is

play34:55

there's a brace underneath here so

play34:58

there's only so much you can do in that

play34:59

regards and you still end up having to

play35:02

to sculpt away at it so we just uh did a

play35:05

quick uh tidy up there just I think like

play35:08

I said this door is uh just going to be

play35:12

in epoxy primer or whatever and driven

play35:15

like that also got all the trim holes

play35:17

welded up uh which is what the the owner

play35:19

of this door wanted and not a a perfect

play35:23

Flawless job or whatever just uh welded

play35:25

them up and ground them and somebody had

play35:28

it looks like they had tried prying off

play35:30

the uh the trim with like a pry bar so

play35:33

there's a dent around every hole so I

play35:36

just there's not a lot of access from

play35:37

the backside on these doors so I just

play35:39

did what I could and again it's not

play35:41

perfect and that's not what we were

play35:43

trying to achieve there and there's

play35:44

pitting and rust pitting all around

play35:46

where the holes are so again you know

play35:49

there's only so much I can do there

play35:51

there's the rust repair on the corner

play35:52

there I just again just did a little

play35:54

quick dab and what ever just to kind of

play35:57

blend it out a little better that's

play35:59

where we weld it in a patch here's the

play36:01

other corner here this is where this

play36:03

Edge was all bent and folded over um we

play36:07

had to do a rust repair on the inner

play36:08

structure but the order was good it was

play36:10

just a little little chunky still and

play36:12

instead of trying to you know work it

play36:14

the metal to death I just uh gave this a

play36:18

quick uh quick wipe as well with our

play36:21

product and uh just kind of clean this

play36:24

edge up a lot better than than what it

play36:27

was and it should look a little more

play36:30

presentable than a wrinkly up Edge even

play36:32

though this is just going to be getting

play36:34

run in primer or whatever it just uh

play36:38

well this should make it look a little

play36:39

better and if it ever gets to the point

play36:42

where this is going to be getting

play36:43

bodyworked and nice paint on it I don't

play36:46

really like putting plastic filler on

play36:49

edges like this because it's not just

play36:52

not as strong and you know what's the

play36:54

first thing that's going to be getting

play36:55

chipped well an edge of the door at the

play36:58

back of the door especially you open the

play37:00

door up and whatever so this just uh

play37:02

makes it look better and if it ever does

play37:04

get body work then this is

play37:07

basically you know a good starting point

play37:10

for that I think in my opinion anyways

play37:13

if I was trying to get a door like this

play37:14

actually like straight enough for paint

play37:16

I would just take regular plastic filler

play37:19

and just do a light pass over the entire

play37:24

door quote the whole door blck it smooth

play37:28

and then uh go straight to primer and

play37:30

whatever else on these uh flat panels or

play37:33

or newer cars like this you know you

play37:35

start trying to get uh you know just

play37:37

putting a little filler here and here

play37:39

wherever there's a ding and then you

play37:42

prime it and block it and you find more

play37:44

dings and then you just have to keep

play37:45

going back and forth so I find the best

play37:47

way is just to do a really light coat

play37:49

over the whole thing block it all

play37:51

straight and then you're done and uh you

play37:53

know there's no going back and forth 500

play37:55

times messing around and the amount of

play37:58

material on it is so thin that it's like

play38:01

well it it's no thicker than you know

play38:04

what you would have if you were just

play38:05

trying to get it straight with primer

play38:08

and you know filler is a lot cheaper

play38:10

than primer and a lot more durable so

play38:13

that's the way I would do that but I

play38:14

don't do that kind of work anymore I

play38:16

just do the metal work so calling this

play38:19

uh good enough for what it needs to be I

play38:20

think I keep trying to film this uh

play38:22

outro this is actually several days

play38:24

after I finished this but I keep being

play38:25

rudely

play38:39

interrupted I can't even remember what

play38:41

I've said in this video or what uh what

play38:43

the point of any of this was but uh

play38:46

there it is and you know not a Flawless

play38:50

door but uh I really don't think you'd

play38:53

probably find a much better door uh for

play38:55

a 6 64 andala these days so should uh

play38:59

hopefully serve its purpose well thanks

play39:02

for watching whatever that

play39:03

was um and just a little aside before we

play39:07

go here I mentioned a couple weeks back

play39:10

that we've been having issues with the

play39:12

PayPal the donation thing thanks to all

play39:15

you who have been sending in the

play39:17

donations through PayPal but uh it's

play39:20

been about 3 weeks now and uh the issue

play39:23

still hasn't been resolved they're still

play39:24

holding my account hostage or whatever

play39:28

and uh it's an issue that could be

play39:31

resolved with like a 30 second

play39:32

conversation with an actual human being

play39:34

over the phone but apparently that's not

play39:37

an option so I just they're basically

play39:40

just setting me on a loop around and

play39:41

around in circles uh you know and

play39:44

talking to robots and computers and

play39:46

things which just uh just doesn't work

play39:49

replacing people with computers it just

play39:51

uh it just doesn't work so I don't uh

play39:55

have a whole lot lot of Hope of any of

play39:57

that being uh recovered or anything at

play40:02

this point uh we'll we'll see it's still

play40:04

ongoing but uh that's an update there if

play40:09

any of you have been enjoying the show

play40:11

so far and you'd like to help out uh

play40:14

please consider becoming a patron of the

play40:17

show uh we have a patreon set up and uh

play40:21

over there we have uh full access to all

play40:23

these videos without any ads in them and

play40:26

there's also a few behind the scenes

play40:29

things from time to time which is

play40:31

essentially just me ranting so there's

play40:34

like 30% more Kyle RS I guess over there

play40:38

and uh it also helps us to continue

play40:42

working on projects that uh are a little

play40:45

more I guess uh you know in line with

play40:47

what we want to do here such as the

play40:49

chicken truck

play40:51

project um

play40:53

so that's an option there I guess for

play40:56

anybody that wants to help out those of

play40:57

you who have been helping out uh very

play40:59

much appreciate that and uh we'll try to

play41:03

continue doing this for as long as we're

play41:06

able to hope to be back on the chicken

play41:09

truck soon once we're done fixing these

play41:11

stupid doors but again we'll see how

play41:13

things go and we'll keep everyone

play41:15

updated on the PayPal situation if it

play41:17

improves or whatever so thanks and see

play41:20

you all next

week
