Transcripts
hey tea heads throughout the ages tea
has revealed itself to be a powerful way
to unlock positive changes which can
Cascade into the most meaningful and
life-altering
Transformations I am forever Amazed by
how the simple Act of embracing the most
simple drink can trigger so many
benefits and I wanted to make a series
of videos showcasing just some of the
ways that tea could contribute to a much
happier healthier and Inspired Life
for everyone out there in the first
video of the series I'm going to show
you the magical way that te can bring a
Mindful and meditative Tranquility to
your hectic day-to-day and by doing so
can lead to huge shifts in your life now
tea has been used as a meditative tool
for thousands of years Buddhist monks
have long embraced tea as their drink of
choice to promote deeper and richer
medit ation practices and every tea
drinking culture around the world has
tapped into Tea's innate ability to
bring a sense of calm and
Stillness to their day but how can you
fully harness the centering and
meditative power of tea into your life
well let's start with a brief definition
of meditation you have no doubt heard of
meditation before but maybe you're a
little confused about what it means and
how to practice meditation indeed this
is a subject that has been pondered over
for hundreds or maybe thousands of years
so it's understandable that you have
some questions you may also think that
meditation is part of a spiritual
practice necessar but this is not the
case meditation can and is practiced by
everyone no matter their faith or
beliefs at its heart meditation is a way
to reach a state of blissful
non-judgmental presence where you shake
off all of the shackles of your past or
the wants and anxieties of the future
and instead achieve your highest state
of being meditation allows us to bask in
the Majesty of the infantes small slice
of time that we call the present moment
without any cares or self- judgments it
recognizes that you are not your
thoughts or your emotions or your ego
and this is proven because you can
always step back and observe those
things and watch them fade away so who
is this non-judgmental Observer who you
find watching over your thoughts and
actions well it is the true you
connected with all of your senses to the
truth of the moment and expressing your
true purpose or value which is to be
meditation brings a whole list of
positive life benefits it reduces stress
it brings a powerful Tranquility to your
day which can transform relationships
improve focus and performance and
resolve deep-seated emotional trauma
regularly tapping into that meditative
State reduces negative approaches to
living helps you to live longer and with
more creativity contentment empathy and
joy now there are a whole list of other
studies out there around the power of
meditation that you can go and seek out
but today let's focus on the practice
itself and crucially how tea can be the
most remarkable hack to achieve a
meditative state for many people the act
of meditation may seem difficult or
forced or uncomfortable I think that
this is because we tend to visualize the
act of meditation with images of Monks
chanting for hours or the seemingly
impossible task of sitting cross-legged
trying to make your thoughts
disappear now while I think it is true
that deep and intentional meditation is
a skill to be practiced the fact is that
we all kind of meditate every day but
just for tiny slices of time and often
without awareness we meditate in the
moments between thoughts in the the
empty spaces when you briefly gaze up
from your screen when you're working and
notice a bird in a tree before your
brain orders you to get back to work you
are in a brief state of presence when
you for example you're at a restaurant
you hand your menu back to a m a waiter
uh in that moment uh of emptiness
between choosing what to eat and turning
your attention to discussions with your
partner there is a small state of
presence too when you calmly wake from
your Slumber and notice the world around
you before the Cascade of thoughts and
instructions fill your brain in that
innocent and peaceful moment you are
again in a state of pure
presence the trick with learning
meditation in my opinion is to notice
those empty spaces and then extend them
throughout the day take that bit longer
to gaze at the soft Fascinations of the
world like that bird occupy that space
between actions at that restaurant and
allow the mind to bask in the Stillness
of that moment of waking by turning your
back on the Avalanche of thoughts or
plans for just one second longer there
are many practices of meditation of
course and everyone will have a
different approach but I'm going to give
you just my brief take on what this is
all what this all means and of course
feel free to explore other methods and
Concepts around meditation to find the
best fit for
you in my view the state of meditation
is a state of conscious non-judgmental
presence a state where your awareness
and attention is focused only on being
and your connection with the now with no
concerns for past or for future and no
intrusions from thoughts or emotions
which can detach you from that Blissful
State the first and most important step
is to recognize that you are not your
mind you are not your thoughts the
authentic and conscious you can of
course use your mind just like you use
your legs or your eyes as a tool to
navigate your way through life to learn
to plan and consider the information
that you take in every day but just as
you have the power to stop using your
legs and to sit down or to shut your
eyes you can also develop the skill of
quieting the mind which is a necessary
part of meditation the best way that I
have found to do this is through simple
observation just by stepping back and
observing your thoughts without judgment
you have taken an act of separation from
the thoughts which makes them
interestingly necessarily stop imagine
your brain is like a car that you have
spent your whole life driving which has
helped you to navigate through life and
get you places get you where you are
right now the problem is that as driving
becomes instinctive and the car responds
seamlessly with our intentions and
actions we begin to feel that we are one
we lose that separation between the car
and the driver but sometimes the car can
feel like it is losing control or it's
going too fast or that we're just simp
simply always staring out at the road
ahead at the future or looking back at
the past in our rear viiew mirror but
never actually enjoying the surroundings
of where we are right now you have to
learn to get out of the car and when
that happens and You observe the car as
separate from yourself then the car
cannot crash it cannot drive because it
has no driver it will necessarily become
still and you can sit and enjoy where
you are right now rather than look
looking backwards or planning your
journey ahead so the first thing to do
is to recognize that you are not your
mind we may have been brought up with
this sort of decaron idea that I think
therefore I am and being indoctrinated
to believe that the self is basically
the culmination of our thoughts but it
is not the thinking brain is a powerful
tool but you can step away from it and
observe your thoughts and by doing so
they will just like the car necessarily
stop they will necessarily disappear
because they need you to engage with
them otherwise they cannot exist you on
the other hand can quite happily exist
without your
thoughts but even if you recognize that
you are separate from the car jumping
out of a moving car seems impossible how
do you stop when you are constantly in
motion when your mind is racing and you
are lost in a sea of thoughts how can
you find your way to shore at first it
can seem difficult but with some
experience it becomes
easier in my experience you just need to
be able to zoom out from the situation
give yourself some space to step
backwards so that you can observe your
thoughts with no intention of course to
change them or to judge them or to solve
them because by doing so you once again
engaging with them just watch them and
they will disappear remember
that you always have Infinite Space
around you there is always room to zoom
out and step away you are never stuck
with your thoughts or emotions it also
helps if you can focus your attention on
something in the present moment in fact
one of the most powerful ways that I
found to achieve a calmer mind and be
closer to a meditative state is to
Simply Focus all of your attention on
what you are doing right now
whether that is brushing your teeth or
walking up the stairs the act of
singular focused attention on the
present activity is a powerful and
transformative discipline which is often
simply termed mindfulness now this term
is kind of confusing because the word
mind seems to conjure up the idea of
lots of thinking in fact mindfulness in
this sense of focused attention on a
present activity is very similar to
achieving an empty and thought free mind
the most successful subjects for your
attention in order to achieve a
meditative state are called Soft
Fascinations these are subjects that do
not command your attention or direct
your thoughts for answers and solutions
but instead allow your attention to roam
and allow you to become Thoughtless and
receptive in a non-judgmental way
the perfect example of soft Fascination
is nature a walk in the forest is
restorative because we're surrounded by
these soft Fascinations the the the
sound of bird song the feel of the
breeze on your face the mesmerizing
display of shapes and colors of the
landscape all of these senses are
undemanding of your thoughts and yet
calmly
captivating and this is the first way
that tea can instantly bring you into a
meditative State tea is in my opinion
the ultimate atome soft Fascination this
is only true though when you're brewing
tea properly which means using whole
Leaf loose leaf tea and brewing in a
mindful way setting aside time to focus
uh your attention onto your tea session
this is where gong Fu Brewing or the tea
brewing ceremonies come into the
equation if you want to get the most
meditative benefits from your tea then
you have to switch from bags and mugs to
leaves and a more considered Brewing
style like this you need to stop what
you were doing so that you can make te
your centerpiece for the focus of your
attention for I would say at least half
an hour creating this space for a simple
act a simple and indulgent ritual once a
day is a simple Act of commitment to
yourself so how is tea the ultimate
atome soft FC well let's start with the
Tea's connection with the natural world
drinking loose leaf tea is a way to
connect you to nature of course you can
get all tea geeky and like learn about
the botony of the Tea Leaf but this is
not what I'm talking about I mean that
the simple Act of seeing these dry
leaves watching them hydrate as you brew
through your session and tasting their
character is a direct celebration and
appreciation of nature I can think of no
other food or drink that offers such an
undeviating connection to
Nature fruits and vegetables are fine
but they're prepped and then consumed
within minutes all other foods that are
natural like honey or cocoa show no
resemblance to their Origins and like
for example coffee beans are ground and
brewed and discarded before you even
start drinking the tea leaves in a Gong
Fu session are always here for you to
see to touch to smell and taste during
your recession they are always changing
as well just like nature now let's
add all of the beautiful Brewing
elements functional yet aesthetic
captivating clay pots porcelain cups
glass
pictures to show off the everchanging
color and texture of the liquor you can
also add other flourishers like plants
or animal figurines and a multitude of
personalizations which you can adapt
from session to session to build a stage
of soft Fascinations for the pleasure of
your
attention and now let's start brewing
the step-by-step process of The Gong Fu
or other ceremonial tea brewing Styles
engages your attention to focus on the
simple beautiful Act of combining leaf
and water brewing tea is an ancient act
which is so Elementary and easy to start
get it carries with it such complexity
and skill that it can take a lifetime to
master just check out some of the master
classes masterclass videos that I've
done to see how deep the rabbit hole can
go this attention directed to brewing a
tea to express its Pinnacle of taste for
you is engaging and mindful and brings
you into the present moment effortlessly
the sensorial pleasures of Brewing enhan
those soft Fascinations the fluid
movement of water adds dynamism the
steam rising from your stage is Hypnotic
the feel of the te- wear in your hands
is satisfying the sounds of the session
are textured and the visual beauty of
brewing and pouring and the appearance
of the liquor are all engaging yet
undemanding the entirety of the
sensorial experience of brewing tea is
Rich yet simple a perfect example of
soft Fascination to bring you into a
meditative State and we have not even
started talking about the sensorial joy
of tea appreciation from the look of
those leaves as they transform from dry
to wet to the immense Aromas of the tea
its complex and shifting tastes the
textures and physicalities that it
brings to your mouth and its enduring
aftertaste the act of tea appreciation
is entrancing one of the main reasons
why te is so compelling and Powerful at
drawing your attention is its subtlety
of course there is subtlety in other
things like wine coffee chocolate honey
olive oil Etc but because they are
relatively bold in taste you can taste
all of these foods and drinks sort of
mindlessly and you will still feel that
you had an experience of them in a basic
way with tea there is an ocean of rich
and complex tasting notes textures and
Aromas to be discovered but you need to
focus attention and dive into that ocean
to explore and uncover them the nuance
experience of
tea does not come to you easily and
without your attention it requires you
to engage with every single moment of
tasting and so in all of these ways from
the links to Nature the sensorial
Aesthetics of the tea stage and tea
brewing the focused attention required
to make good tea and the subtle and
complex art of tasting the act of having
having tea is a powerful hack to bring
you to a state of non-judgmental
presence and quiets the mind in the most
effortless and beautiful way but tea has
other tricks to bring you into a state
of meditative calm it's Treasure Trove
of nutrients now we will be discussing
some of these in Greater detail in
future videos as we are going to get
into the health benefits of tea but
let's focus our attention onto the big
three for helping
meditation the first is an amino acid
called
eleanine which is exclusive almost
exclusively found in tea you can't get
this magical compound from any other
Foods in your
Supermarket within minutes after sipping
your tea Aline crosses your blood brain
barrier and changes your brain chemistry
affecting your dopamin serotonin and
Gaba levels all neurotransmitters which
contribute to a more content rewarded
and calm feeling without
drowsiness alanine has been shown to
radically stimulate Alpha brain waves
activity now this is the same frequency
band associated with the brain in a
meditative state with enhanced attention
improved cognition and a reduction in
mental and physical stress all again
without causing any drowsiness or
sedation eleine is truly a remarkable
compound which is almost certainly the
reason why tea has been consumed so
enthusiastically for Millennia the
second compound in tea which helps
meditation might sound a bit weird but
it's caffeine now the effect of caffeine
and tea is different to its effect in
other drinks like coffee for two reasons
the first is that the caffeine in tea is
bound up with other chemicals and so it
takes longer for your body to break down
and absorb so you get a more time
release energy lift without so many of
the Jitters but the other big difference
is that the lenine works synergistically
with caffeine to enhance its positive
effects and reduce its negative ones
Aline limits caffeine's ability on your
circulatory system which could cause
increase in blood pressure or headaches
for
example it also reduces its impact on
your nervous system there have been
multiple studies which show that when
taken together caffeine and Aline work
beautifully together to enhance
attention and alertness reduce
distraction and yet stay calm but not
sleepy is it any wonder that tea has
been loved so much by those wishing to
meditate for hours the third compound in
tea is Gaba this is a neurotransmitter
which is already already made in the
brain enhanced by
eleanine it acts like a break on your
nervous system slowing down that car in
order to bring it under control the Gaba
in may or may not make it into your
brain as there is some controversy about
whether it can cross the bloodb brain
barrier but it can certainly affect the
nervous system of your gut which can
reduce stress in other ways and there
are studies showing that the Gaba in tea
does lead to a significant reduction in
stress and
excitability now there are so many other
compounds in Te that we have not spoken
about but we'll get to those hopefully
in other videos the point is that tea
will radically enhance your state of
mind and mood and naturally brings you
closer to a meditative State calm alert
indistractable content and attentive so
I hope that this video gives you a
glimpse of just one positive
transformation that the practice of tea
can bring to your life tea is a
meditation it is truly one of the
greatest hacks to easily bring you to a
calm present attentive and content state
which will then shine light into all
other areas of your life and
relationships I leave you with a quote
from the late and great monk thick nut

suddenly becomes revealed all the
complexity pain drama of life is a
