Transcripts
the man accused of killing six people on
One Night in February gives a minute by
minute rundown of what he says happened
when you have to get from point A to
point B There is a good chance you are
using the Uber app to do so but
unfortunately there are a lot of
dangerous stories coming out of this
service a common fear in the minds of
passengers is who Uber assigns to drive
them the company allows almost anyone
the chance to apply as a contractor even
with background checks the possibility
of a criminal behind the wheel remains
many articles over the years have
highlighted flaws in their system in
2014 the Chicago Tribune reached out to
Uber for a list of local drivers they
refused providing only one individual
this person still violated their Rider
safety policy no one with the felony
conviction in the last seven years is
permitted yet his record showed a felony
residential burglary charge from four
years prior the company was forced to
admit fault while claiming the margin of
error was minuscule that didn't suffice
as stories continued to surface months
later NBC published a report on the
issue the outlet found several
contractors with a questionable past on
New Year's Eve an Uber driver named Syed
mazafar hit a family on a crosswalk the
accident tragically took the life of
their four-year-old daughter he had a
prior conviction for reckless driving
NBC also interviewed a woman named
Beverly Locke who passed screening her
20-year rap sheet included burglary a
cocaine possession and threats of
violence after clarifying she was no
longer a criminal she then admitted I
would pick somebody up take them to the
airport and my second thought would be
go back to that house and see what's in
there a Criminal Mind always thinks like
a Criminal Mind someone could be
victimized by a person like me this has
in fact occurred on several occasions
Tanya and Daniel Sackler paid to be
dropped off from LAX at their West
Hollywood condo upon arriving the man
threw their luggage into a pile and
quickly drove off he made off with a
purse briefcase wallet and iPad these
sorts of heists are even easier with
ubereats which offers no contact
delivery there have been reports of
Thieves lifting packages where thousands
with even one stealing a dog but robbery
is perhaps the least of a Rider's
concern take for instance a Potential
Threat to National Security Miguel Diaz
was a Cuban migrant who became
self-employed through the app he was
arrested after the FBI uncovered a
Facebook page he made expressing support
for Isis that included posing with a
firearm and telling an informant that a
sniper could sow chaos in the city
Miguel ultimately pleaded guilty for the
illegal possession of a firearm to be
fair there was little Uber could have
done to prevent this incident in
particular yet those with a violent
record could evade scrutiny with ease
through tricks as simple as a fake name
this became apparent after Los Angeles
and San Francisco filed a civil suit
against the company in a complaint from
2015 they list 25 felons who were
approved in spite of their easily
exposed past that included a murderer
who spent decades in prison before
signing up under a pseudonym they also
found a man guilty of lewd acts against
a child under 14. he'd given nearly 6
000 rides including some to
unaccompanied children that wasn't an
isolated incident either with a similar
case appearing in Boston soon after in
2016 a 54 year old named Ronald DeLuca
was stopped for a suspended license an
investigation revealed the contractor
was a level two sex offender no
explanation was ever given for how he
cleared the company's background check
this wasn't even the only case in the
city the same year A man was found
working for the app while on trial for
two counts of sexual assault the
accusations were levied in 2002 but
never concluded as he went on the run
for 20 years it was only after being
caught that he looked to the service
this outrage over their inability to
uphold safety procedures was growing
many began to question if they were even
doing background checks at all there was
a push for more extensive screening
including fingerprint scans but Uber
reiterated that no background check was
perfect La Yellow Cab exposed eight
drivers who frequented the Los Angeles
International Airport their crimes
ranged from assault to the possession of
CP it was part of an unsuccessful effort
to have ride sharing apps banned from
the airport now it is worth pointing out
that Uber has taken some steps they've
improved the screening process and
implemented an in-app safety feature
still many feel it isn't enough with
similar reports continuing to this very
day in the end it should be acknowledged
that much of this concern is in relation
to a separate issue the reason these
checks are important is because they can
be an indicator of present risk though
it isn't even close to definitive truly
what people fear most is the fact that
if a driver chooses to abuse their
passengers they can we'll learn more
about this after a word from our sponsor
as a person myself who has made a
conscious effort to become healthier by
going to the gym more often and eating a
higher protein diet it has become
difficult for me to find foods that
quench my sweet tooth luckily nowadays
we have magic spoon I think a lot of us
can look back fondly on our childhoods
of eating sugary cereals but we cannot
really pull that off anymore as adults
luckily with magic spoon you actually
can this is a gluten-free grain-free
keto friendly and high protein cereal
that has zero grams of sugar per serving
and natural flavors personally my
favorite flavor is fruity magic spoon
and when you look at the nutrition label
it's crazy that this packs as much
protein as a lot of protein bars this
time I mixed it up by trying the peanut
butter flavor and I put a little bit of
PB powder on top which I highly
recommend you take a bite into it and
it's honestly surprising that this is
not just regular cereal it almost seems
too good to be true so if you want to
try out magic spoon for yourself I
suggest clicking on the link in the
description down below or clicking on
the QR code code or even if you're at
checkout just use coupon code gfm to get
that five dollars off your first
purchase
with interactions between complete
strangers and an Uber it isn't
surprising that conflict can arise what
is surprising is the amount of time that
this escalates to violence in February
of 2012 a Seth Bender called for a ride
home the passenger felt a little gassy
upon entering and burped this disrespect
enraged the driver causing him to vent
about Americans that quickly devolved
into a derogatory rant about
homosexuality Seth tried to leave only
to be followed the cabbie then spit on
his face before slapping him and driving
away James Alva fell victim to similar
hatred after a brief argument over
directions the contractor asked if he
was Mexican he was then told you're
nothing but a dirty Mexican the app base
chauffeur continued to hurl slurs until
pulling over to kick him out before
leaving James tried to take a photo of
the man's face and license plates only
to get struck several times it seems the
slightest inconvenience is enough for
some to unleash their bigotry talika
white who was blamed after her friend
corrected their driver on a turn the
operator became a vicious once she was
alone he started to abuse me saying you
stupid black your friend gave me the
wrong directions when they reached home
he dragged her out of the vehicle he
then began punching her as she cried for
help the young mother was left with
bruises head injuries and bloodied
wrists in September of 2014 Patrick
karaja was instructed to pick up Roberto
chicas and two buddies trouble arose
when a dispute broke out over the route
it would never be resolved with Patrick
ordering them out he then took a hammer
and struck Roberto on the side of the
head the attack fractured the victim's
skull it put the passenger in serious
danger of losing his eye requiring
reconstructive surgery Patrick was then
arrested for felony assault and battery
given the nature of the service it's
also impossible to know for certain if
there's a dangerous weapon in the
vehicle Johannes duress became erratic
while transporting three men in
Washington DC the trio attempted to bail
but the driver came with finally Eric's
search spoke up for his friends
admitting that he didn't feel safe this
led Johannes to pull out a knife and
stab him six times in the arm and chest
bizarrely the charges against him were
ultimately dismissed for want of
prosecution this means that for whatever
reasons the case was dropped by the city
because no progress was being made on
their end in other cases the Outburst
isn't even directed at the rider
amounting to good old-fashioned road
rage Jamal Khalif became so angry during
a traffic jam he decided to initiate a
fight to the dismay of the passenger in
the back seat he began pounding and
spitting on the door of Lorraine delp's
car when the model opened it to confront
him he dislocated her nose he then
pushed her earrings through her skin
back into her neck Khalifa was arrested
for assault and reckless endangerment
it's unknown if his passengers ever made
it to their destination while this
violence is worrisome enough it is far
from the focus of broader conversation
that's because the most predominant
crimes will largely Target the fairer
sex preying on them at times when
they're most vulnerable
in the early hours of September 9 2020 a
woman ordered an Uber to get to work it
was answered by 32 year old Jason rhodus
the ride seemed fine at first until he
started interrogating her about her sex
life he then implied exchanging the trip
for a favor immediately she became
uncomfortable and asked him to stop
instead he threatened to throw her out
if she alerted authorities this led the
woman to jump out of the vehicle in an
attempt to flee Jason was able to catch
up grabbing the victim's throats before
assaulting her he was sentenced to nine
years in prison for both this and an
unrelated charge of domestic violence
Jason is just one of countless predators
that shed light on these inherent safety
risks initially drivers and passengers
were connected using their real phone
numbers but there were so numerous
reports of stalking that the info is now
masked in fact many of these horror
stories undermine the very positives the
app is lauded for shortly after her 23rd
birthday a lady in Brooklyn called to be
taken home from a Caribbean Bar while in
route she began to feel sick and asked
the driver to pull over the man offered
to help clean up only to start rubbing
her breasts with a napkin he then began
fondling them and trying to quote
unquote put his mouth on it when she
pushed him away he exposed his genitals
The Unwanted advances didn't stop there
he continued to pry the entire ride
calling her sexy and inquiring if she
lived alone upon arriving he requested a
and later Tracked Down the
victim's identity to contact her again
for unknown reasons the man was never
outed publicly Uber is seen as a crucial
tool for getting someone home safely
after a night of drinking it's a
preferable alternative to driving Under
the Influence though sometimes those
looking to exploit the vulnerable end up
in control that was true of Marshall's
Savage Banks from Evansville Indiana
rather than take the intoxicated woman
home he coerced her to exit the vehicle
this was noticed by by close ones who
found her missing from the apartment
they stumbled across her outside with
banks who gave them a fake name it was
after he left that she broke down in
tears and told them he covered her mouth
before taking advantage of her they took
her to the hospital and Marshall was
charged with a level 3 felony Mark
Taylor raised similar suspicions among
his victims friends the 30 year old
circled around the neighborhood before
stopping at an incorrect location this
led one friend to check in running over
to find Taylor on top of her he slammed
his fists on the locked door until the
driver finally stopped as The Rescuers
drove away she mumbled thanks for
showing me mercy Taylor was arrested on
counts of sa and kidnapping sadly while
in these incidents proactive measures
were taken most are only outed after
it's too late in 2017 on a cold winter
night a neighborhood in Gwinnett County
was awoken by a series of frantic knocks
they opened the door to find and
intoxicated 16 year old with her pants
around her ankles the girl had been
dropped off by 58 year old abdulli jagny
jagney was assigned to pick her up at a
local bar where she and other teens had
been underage drinking he was later
charged and thrown in jail for violating
a minor investigators then issued a
request for other potential victims to
step forward in some instances these
types of criminals aren't caught for
their first offense one such occurrence
was the case of Alfonso Alarcon Nunes
Alfonso was an illegal immigrant who
deported himself back to Mexico in 2005.
yet he returned to the U.S years later
to live in California this is important
as the state issues driver's licenses
regardless of legal status two years
after obtaining his license he applied
for Uber he registered under an alias
disguising himself as Bruno Diaz in
spite of all this the account was
approved marking the beginning of a
crime spree throughout 2017. he targeted
Young intoxicated women of both on and
off the clock the latter was by parking
in front of bars and restaurants posing
as their designated driver Alfonso drove
victims home before violating them and
stealing belongings that included
jewelry cell phones and computers
because of the pseudonym which extended
to his venmo it was difficult to
identify the driver at first in the end
it was DNA that led to the man's arrest
over accusations from five different
girls he was convicted in 2021 and
sentenced to 54 years in prison by this
point it's clear that these stories are
shockingly common Uber has released two
safety reports for the periods of
2017-2018 and 2019-2020 the company's
first disclosure revealed a nearly 6 000
allegations involving its rides that
lowered to the still concerning number
of almost four thousand the year 2020
alone accounted for 141 cases of forced
penetration and 998 cases of sexual
assault as a result several women have
sued over their inadequate background
checks one pointed out that the
perpetrator's criminal record could be
found within minutes this culminated in
2020 following the release of the second
safety report on July 13th the class
action lawsuit was filed in San
Francisco by the law firm Slater Slater
Shulman as early as 2014 Uber became
aware that its drivers were assaulting
passengers nevertheless in the eight
years since their drivers have continued
to attack passengers that includes the
plaintiffs who claims were alleged in
today's action the company responded in
a press statement there is nothing more
important than safety which is why Uber
has built new safety features
established survivor-centric policies
and been more transparent about serious
incidents while the firm claims to be
representing at least 550 women with
cases they have only filed 12 to dates
they have not been able to provide any
critical incident details for us to
identify a connection to the Uber
platform as of the time of writing the
conclusion of this development remains
to be seen
so far we've covered several categories
of deranged ride share drivers from
seasoned Crooks to serial offenders it
is frightening how often they end up
behind the wheel yet without a doubt
there is one individual that takes the
title for the worst because unlike the
other stories discussed today it
tragically ends in Bloodshed Jason Brian
Dalton used to be known as a good family
man he lived in Cooper Township Michigan
with his wife and two children the 45
year old was often praised for his
kindness that changed in early February
2016 though shortly after he became an
Uber contractor neighbors observed that
he became increasingly paranoid and
depressed the man started to fire guns
outside his house for hours on end yet
this wasn't enough to raise significant
red flags the behavior persisted for
weeks until February 20th Dalton took
his first fare that day at around four
o'clock P.M he was assigned to drop off
Matt melon and at a friend's house
however it wasn't long before he started
driving crazy Dalton entered oncoming
traffic drove over Lawns and even
sideswiped another car that was all
while ignoring and Matt's pleas to stop
Matt was eventually able to escape and
alert authorities but it became just one
of many 9-1-1 calls that went largely
ignored with the trip canceled Dalton
returned home before calling his wife he
asked for the keys of their Chevy HHR
arranging to meet at his parents house
instead Dalton took another pickup
request at 5 15. it came from a woman
who wanted him to pick up her boyfriend
at a Richard Township apartment there
was a slight error though the woman
listed the wrong address texting a
correction moments later it was in the
same area so this shouldn't have been an
issue yet she received no response even
after attempting to call that's because
Dalton was busy driving so aggressively
that he risked a head-on collision he
arrived sometime before 5 42 PM while
surveying the complex he encountered a
mother and five children in the parking
lot he confronted her under the belief
she was someone else when she clarified
she wasn't the man turned his car around
and began firing there was 15 shots in
total which only stopped once she played
dead though she sustained serious
injuries thankfully the woman survived
Dalton quickly sped away driving through
a red light despite striking another
vehicle he managed to flee the scene he
then canceled the prospective Rider
informing her that something had come up
he spent the next hour warning his wife
of unspecified danger he gave her a gun
and told the family to stay home at all
times he hit the road again at 7 37 PM
leaving in their Chevrolet this was
bizarrely to take more Uber requests
which went without incident none of
these passengers noticed anything
unusual but that piece was short-lived
only lasting the next three hours it was
at 10 that Dalton arrived at a Kia
dealership in Kalamazoo he parked his
car to approach a father and son and
then asked what they were looking at
before they could respond he fatally
shot both of them Dalton heard back to
his car driving five miles to the nearby
Cracker Barrel this time he approached a
stranger sitting in a white van he fired
at both her and an adjacent vehicle
severely injuring five different women
only one of them survived a 14 year old
named Abigail cough the attack put her
in a coma Awakening with a shattered
skull and permanent brain damage the
gunfire lasted only a minute with Dalton
returning home to reload as police now
realized there was an active shooter
they launched a full-fledged Manhunt
they began to broadcast the description
of his car over the radio Dalton on the
other hand was unfazed he resumed his
ride-sharing business when the Clock
Struck midnight the Uber contractor
began by dropping off three students at
at their dorm he then drove four people
to a hotel they heard about the Spree
killing and playfully inquired if he was
a gunman he simply replied no this
happened again with a different Trio
minutes later the terror wouldn't end
until 12 36 when he was identified after
dropping off those final passengers he
was pulled over for a traffic stop
before being removed and arrested he was
found with a bulletproof vest and a
handgun hidden within his wristband
Dalton was arraigned later that day on
16 charges including six counts of
murder but this did not end the madness
in a preliminary hearing a Dalton
interrupted the first victim while she
was testifying he had a verbal Outburst
of indecipherable statements that caused
her to cry this led him to be restrained
and removed from the courtroom in March
several documents were released in which
Dalton admitted his involvement but the
suspect then said that Uber was truly to
blame he claimed that upon opening the
app he recognized the logo go as that of
the Eastern Star then a devil head
appeared which was when all the problems
started the following excerpt elaborates
on what he told investigators Dalton
said that the iPhone can take you over
he described the devil figure as a
horned cow head it would give you an
assignment and it would literally take
over your whole body it took almost
three years for the case to reach its
conclusion Jason Dalton pleaded guilty
to all charges against him on January 7
2019. he was sentenced to life in prison
without the possibility of parole to
this day it's unclear what motivated him
to take those people's lives
opportunity is everywhere all you have
to do to find it is get out it should be
noted that even if you're using a
traditional taxi or public
transportation there are still risks
that come along with those as well so we
always must keep an eye out and with
that I think I'll end the video here so
until next time thanks for watching
