Transcripts

play00:00

I initially wasn’t going to make a video of this  nature, but the official trailer that just came

play00:04

out yesterday somehow elevated my hype meter.  Because the first couple of trailers didn’t give

play00:09

away that much, while this one establishes a lot  of great aspects that I’m eagerly looking forward

play00:15

to. The first aspect by far is going to be the  emphasis on the extremely high action production

play00:21

value. This is something that we really only got  towards the last few seasons of Game of Thrones

play00:26

and even then, the Battle of the Bastards as  an example was still relatively low budget

play00:31

since that was shot for like 11 million dollars.  And the other season 8 battle-centric episodes

play00:37

had some major negative flaws that hurt their  overall qualities. So for House of the Dragon,

play00:42

the potential for how insanely executed these  battles could be given there’ll be massive armies

play00:47

at play with dragons flying around is pretty high.  Like I’m assuming each battle is going to be like

play00:53

Spoils of War but with a significantly larger  scale, more logical, and obviously better written.

play01:00

Given that, Ryan Condal has proven to be a great  showrunner, so all the details and overall writing

play01:05

surrounding these battles should be rock solid.  Like one of the major shortfalls for the battles

play01:10

in Game of Thrones was David and Dan having  armies teleport around. Given the amount of

play01:16

logistical troop movements we’ve seen in some of  these trailers, I hope and think they won’t fall

play01:21

into similar pitfalls. Because that also directly  impacts and degrades the scale of the world when

play01:27

characters and entire armies teleport to where the  plot needs them to be, instead of being bound by

play01:32

the world’s realistic mechanics and logistics of  real warfare. So I’m optimistic that that aspect

play01:38

will be better given that this war is the primary  focus, and any contrivances will have a deeper

play01:44

impact. Then I’m really interested to see how the  dynamics of dragons and armies play on each other,

play01:50

and even dragon on dragon combat. There’s going  to be a lot of layers and complexities for each

play01:56

of these battles and this isn’t even bringing up  the aspect of the environment of where battles

play02:01

take place. As an example, there seems to be an  action setpiece within this forest, which should

play02:06

theoretically make doing airstrikes harder. Or  maybe this could introduce more conflict in which

play02:11

Daemon’s inherent reckless nature is highlighted  where he aimlessly starts burning down the forest

play02:17

and isn’t concerned with collateral damage. The  possibilities are pretty much endless for the

play02:21

insane shit that can occur in these action  scenes. Also, from what we’ve seen so far,

play02:27

the practicality or possibility of invisible VFX  for some of these scenes is staggering. Like this

play02:33

shot of this army coming out from a forest looks  like it was all shot in camera and surely there

play02:38

must be some kind of VFX enhancement going on. But  since this looks so practical it’s giving off the

play02:44

opening battle sequence of Gladiator vibes. And  given that I’m kind of a sucker for well-executed

play02:50

action as is everyone, I can’t wait to dive  in and analyze everything that they do very

play02:55

well throughout season 2 in terms of production.  And I’m really curious if the downgrade of 10 to

play03:00

8 episodes is purely a story reason of how much  there is to tell, or if it’s a budgetary reason

play03:06

in which they have an overall season budget and in  order to have the action at the level they want,

play03:11

they had to cut it down to 8 episodes. So yeah,  I don’t know if that would actually be the case

play03:16

because theoretically Warner Bros would want as  much content as possible, but at the same time,

play03:22

the budget must be pretty astronomical if the  first season was supposed to have an episodic

play03:26

budget of like 20 million. And that season was  predominantly composed of dialogue. While season

play03:32

2 probably has double the amount of VFX and has  large-scale action sequences. Then another aspect

play03:38

that I love about the recent trailer is that they  tease certain points of conflict that aren’t just

play03:43

action-oriented. Like continuing the thread of  conflict between Daemon and Rhaenyra from the

play03:47

first season finale, along with the Greens  having a lot of clashing opinions and Aegon

play03:52

genuinely being unhinged. This throughline of  there really being no good characters I think

play03:57

is the most interesting aspect of House of the  Dragon. It essentially highlights what made so

play04:02

many characters in Game of Thrones so intriguing  since most characters were pretty grey and weren’t

play04:07

flat-out evil. So I’m curious to see if Rhaenyra's  side further alienates themselves into being

play04:12

flawed characters since they are technically the  aggressors in terms of starting this war. Even

play04:18

though they are kind of in the right for doing so,  albeit for selfish reasons that will definitely

play04:23

not be for the betterment of the realm. Rhaenyra  will most likely sustain more losses outside of

play04:28

just Lucerys and seeing how this immense weight  impacts her character and whether or not this

play04:34

further pushes her to a darker side will be very  interesting. Along with Daemon probably being the

play04:39

devil on her shoulder and constantly encouraging  insane shit for her to do. Which will further most

play04:45

likely create a divide between their characters.  I’m also just very excited to see Daemon’s impact

play04:50

for season 2 considering that if in season 1 he  beheaded a character for speaking out of line,

play04:56

then who knows what he’s going to get up to with  caraxes while out on the battlefield. To me this

play05:01

emphasis on characters is the biggest draw because  this point of the story imbues so much conflict

play05:07

between everyone, to the point that every dialogue  scene will probably be deeply engaging. There’s

play05:13

so much to discuss and dive into for how this war  impacts characters, their relationships, dynamics,

play05:18

and how they’ll influence the world and common  folk population. Which another thing introduced

play05:23

in the trailer is Mysaria’s involvement where  she probably incites some kind of common folk

play05:28

uprising or rebellion. And this may also have  to do with possible ramifications of Aegon’s

play05:34

actions as a king and how that impacts the broader  world and city. And the reason why this excites me

play05:40

is that this makes the world feel real and lived  in with a realistic population that actually has

play05:45

opinions and is willing to express them. Unlike  the later seasons of Game of Thrones where the

play05:51

population of Kingslanding was practically  non-existent and was very inconsistent. House

play05:57

of the Dragon season 2 from the trailer and how  season 1 was, seems like Ryan Condal is creating

play06:02

a much more detailed approach that values every  aspect of this world and making it feel real

play06:08

and grounded. Just like the first few seasons of  Game of Thrones but obviously with a much bigger

play06:13

budget. Then we also saw some new dragons like  Moondancer who has a very cool and unique design,

play06:19

and Vermithor seems to be joining the black side  after all. Which I don’t know how the story goes,

play06:24

but if Vaeghar has a showdown with Vermithor in  the finale, then that would be pretty fucking

play06:29

epic and may go down as one of the greatest action  setpieces in the fantasy genre. Probably excluding

play06:35

Lord of the Rings and if House of the Dragon  season 2 comes anywhere close to that precedent

play06:40

then we're going to be eating very good. There are  also some other minor moments like this seemingly

play06:45

looking like Daemon being back in Kingslanding,  or who knows all these people have white hair,

play06:50

but I am very familiar with Matt Smith’s body and  that does look like his posture, the crown hitting

play06:56

the floor has some interesting implications, Aegon  being absolutely ravenous raises questions for

play07:02

what got him to this point, and I highly doubt  we’ve seen moments and shots from every major

play07:06

setpiece. Because from what we’ve seen this looks  like 2 to 3 main setpieces and I’m assuming Ryan

play07:13

Condal wants to keep the later ones in the season  a mystery. I assume this forest battle will either

play07:18

go down in episode 3 or 4 as an example. Also  to put some pieces together between the trailers

play07:23

I’m going to make a prediction for a major plot  event in the first half of the season. And again,

play07:28

I haven’t read Fire and Blood so this is purely  me theorizing. So one easy connection is that

play07:34

there is this funeral as shown in the Black and  Green trailers and through the most recent one,

play07:38

we see that this scene devolves into the common  folk rushing the royalty. It seems to be implied

play07:43

that Mysaria is driving this conflict and I  wouldn’t be surprised if she arranges the death

play07:53

of Otto Hightower. Given that he kind of screwed  her over last season which she would reasonably be

play07:58

mad about and would want revenge over, and this  would naturally position her to be an ally for

play08:04

the blacks. Along with this juxtaposing her to  Larys which could make for some very intriguing

play08:09

and conspiratorial conflicts within Kingslanding  that I’m very excited about. Another reason why

play08:14

I think Otto may be getting the axe is that he  doesn’t show up in the trailers that much which is

play08:19

normally not a great sign if you want to keep your  life. That and he’s in the most natural position

play08:24

narratively to die out of all the prominent  characters on the green side since he’s kind of

play08:29

served his purpose in season 1 by being the  primary person to initiate this conflict. Also,

play08:35

another detail here is that Otto isn’t present for  this funeral and he should be since he’s normally

play08:40

bound to Kingslanding. You can also possibly infer  that this could be Aemond’s funeral since he’s

play08:45

missing, but he is kind of fighting in a war  so it’s more plausible for him to be absent.

play08:50

Unless if fast travel is active like in Game  of Thrones. So all of this inner turmoil within

play08:55

Kingslanding I think stays very true to the core  being of Game of Thrones. There are big battles,

play09:01

but behind the scenes, there’s a constant ever  evolving plane of conflict that impacts our

play09:06

characters. It gives the story more depth than  just being a generic war and I’m really happy

play09:12

that this trailer essentially confirms that this  is the case. Also, I haven’t really talked about

play09:17

it that much, but the cinematography is flat-out  breathtaking here. There are so many gorgeous

play09:22

shots throughout these trailers and I’d love to do  a deeper dive into the cinematography of House of

play09:27

the Dragon in the future. Then as an overall wish  in terms of an improvement from season 1 to 2,

play09:33

I hope that the overall pace is slower and we  don’t go through any random time jumps. That was

play09:38

by far my biggest gripe with season 1 and now  that we’re actually at the meat of the story,

play09:43

I assume that won’t be the case, but given that  there are only 8 episodes I don’t know if they’ll

play09:48

try to make up having fewer episodes by trying to  cover more ground. Then finally I hope that Ryan

play09:54

Condal through season 2 establishes that both  sides of this conflict are terrible and flawed.

play09:59

The marketing is kind of weird where it’s like  Marvel’s Civil War where they want you to pick

play10:03

a side, but like, both sides are pretty shitty.  So I hope that there isn’t a clear good side to

play10:09

this narrative and for Rhaneyra’s arc to be her  compromising her ideals and becoming more like

play10:14

a villain to try to win the war. Narratively it  seems like that’s where everything is going and

play10:19

the marketing just makes this feel a little  black and white when it’s significantly more

play10:23

complex than that. So yeah, I’m very optimistic  for season 2 which is a pretty stark contrast

play10:29

to 2 years ago when I and basically everyone were  very hesitant for season 1. But this time around,

play10:36

I think it’s pretty universal in terms of  everyone being excited for House of the

play10:39

Dragon season 2. And if any other future show  in this universe like Dunk and Egg are anywhere

play10:45

close to the quality of HOTD, then we're going  to be very fortunate. Thank you for watching

play10:51

and like last season I’ll be doing episodic  reviews for each episode and then an overall

play10:55

season review. As always, thank you to my top  patron Logan Farmer for being in the top tier.
