my name is theo and this is  column questions to a student  

today we will have a small talk with  a great guy gerald obudem from nigeria

hi hello i'm really nice to meet you nice  to meet you i have some questions for you  

all right we are standing near the central  institute what does this building mean for you  

well actually thank you actually such  universities like uh has a lot of memories for me  

so like in 2014 when i finished my language course  at rostov state medical university i applied to  

come and study intelligent university and it was  through the best medical university in russia and  

now we started the best medical university so  i had a lot of memories from the school because  

it was a period of my time when i had to grow  from being just a normal high school student  

to becoming a doctor so situation of university  for me personally it's i call it a school of  

university or university of opportunities rather  because in the section of you have um all the  

opportunities you need to succeed as a student  you're allowed to build a network with other  

students from different countries of the world  you have the first class professors teaching you  

and then at the end of the your um stay or at the  end of your studies in central university become  

a very competent doctor one that could easily  help um help treat patients in the hospital and um  

for me i had lots of fun while i was studying i i  was very active with my sports as well so certain  

university was one of the gave me the opportunity  for me to develop my myself i mean in terms of  

sporting activities i made a lot of friends both  locally and international when i was exposed to  

other international conferences here at school  so for me it means it really means a lot to me  

great memories thank you i know that you had  really high score good marks okay and i know  

that uh in such enough there is a system uh gpa  yeah exactly what does it mean for students is  

it important to have a high score yeah obviously  so um gpa it's like just a grading system and it's  

all over the world it is used to grade students in  accordance with the marks that they make when they  

are studying in school so um in russia i think the  gpa is usually five over five so a five or five  

means that throughout your study in russia you had  the best scores in all the subjects that you took  

so for me while i was studying in touch enough  i made sure that i focused more on my studies  

because that is the most important thing or the  most precious thing to me while i'm in russia so i  

was able to you know study so hard prepare for my  exams prepare for all my classes and i was able to  

get all the best degrees i could get in  the school i guess it's really difficult  

to be a foreigner a foreign student  in another country especially study  

how did you prepare for exams was it difficult  for you to study oh obviously yes i mean  

so while i was studying searching for  university i actually started in russian  

so i had my lecturers in russia had to read  and write in russian language i had to you know  

talk to my teachers respond to their questions  in class give my exams all in russian language  

so for me personally i think that is the most  difficult part that i had to play but like i said  

when you put your mind to something you  can achieve whatever you put your mind to  

so i made sure i took some of my time to prepare  well for these exams i took out more time to  

learn the language because i knew that at the  end of the day i had to use this language to  

you know give my exams so the most difficult part  of this was just the language and apart from the  

language the second thing that i think that is  very important for students to understand is that  

you have to have the passion to study whatever  you want to study if you want to study let's  

say for instance medicine just like i studied  you have to have the passion to treat patients  

you have to have the passion to sit down and read  your books because it has to do with all about it  

it has to do with the knowledge you have about  a particular subject about a particular course  

do you remember that moment when you  decided to move to russia and why russia

all right so actually i i was already  in a university before i decided to  

apply for a scholarship program that was available  to nigerian students then back in university so  

i'm usually the government every year they select  students from different universities to apply for  

an interview where they you know select the  best students and then they send them to study  

uh for uh free in russia okay so um i just you  know applied i was already in the university  

studying methane as well but i just decided  to apply because i felt in russia they will  

have more opportunities and more experience  when it comes to medicine because at least  

it's an advanced and developing country as  compared to nigeria which is a little bit  

underdeveloped yeah so when i applied for  the interview i got an interview i actually  

didn't want to come to russia because i felt  there were better places probably like the us or  

the uk to go to so when i got the interview  i submitted all my documents i need to do  

and then yes that was the moment i knew i was  coming to russia when i was given the hour later  

when i was i've been offered a scholarship to  study medicine and surgery in russia i never knew  

i was going to study in english as well because  i felt i thought i was going to study in english  

because i thought okay i mean in nigeria everyone  speaks english and oh i never knew i was going to  

study in russian language so but i'm coming  to russia in 2013 september i was asked to go  

first to the preparatory course we will learn the  russian language that was a very difficult moment  

for me because i felt i was losing more years  you know trying to study because i was already  

in my second year and having to spend another  one year just studying the russian language  

was like a burden to me but looking back right  now i think that was one of the best decisions  

for me because i was able to understand the people  because one of the main reasons why students don't  

get acclimatized to a certain country it's when  they don't speak the same language so there is  

a problem with comprehension and also there's  a problem with understanding your environment  

but i'm glad because i had to learn the language  for a year and after that i understood the  

language better and i was able to communicate with  people make friends go to cinemas go for concerts  

watch movies sing dance in russian and all so that  gave me a very good environment for me to get used  

to the culture here what about your family how  how did they feel about your decision and how  

now how does your family feel about the fact that  you are building your career here in russia not  

in your home yeah when i was finishing uh  my medical school the decision to you know  

stay back in russian the decision to go back was  you know on and um we looked at the different  

opportunities that were available to us and  obviously they've always wanted me to finish  

in russian come back to nigeria to apply  the same knowledge i've got from russia  

to help you know develop nigeria the nigerian  health sector but when i finished from russia  

and i finished with the first class i was  offered the possible the best opportunities  

one can ever have so i was offered the permanent  resident to stay back in russia i was offered  

a scholarship to start up my residency program  so at the same time we also had to re-evaluate  

the options that we had having to come back  to nigeria or having to just you know develop  

your career and go further here uh when i had my  permanent resident permit to stay back in russia i  

applied for some jobs and i was able to get a  job so it's it looks if by practicing medicine  

at the same time doing my residency program while  i also gain more experience and more in-depth um

hands-on practice here in russia okay

when i was surfing the information  about you i realized that  

in editing to your main activity you you are  a doctor it's hard it takes a lot of time  

but also you are taking pictures you you are  really good in sport where do you get this energy  

how uh how can you be so active uh is that because  of life position lifestyle can you can you give me  

your secret oh where's this energy from so apart  from medicine i believe we should always have  

other things little things that make you happy  it could probably be singing it could probably  

be dancing it could probably be to draw things to  illustrate or to paint things it could be to act  

so if there is anything apart from your main  passion that really gives you joy i think  

we should always try to derive joy from those  things because they will help to keep us healthy  

happy and make us leave so uh does it mean  that your philosophy of life do what you love  

yeah exactly so make sure you do what  you love and do do with the same passion  

as you've loved it so yeah that's one of my  biggest philosophies in life actually that's cool

you've spent in russia about nine years and i  guess you have some interesting stories certainly  

certainly yeah maybe uh from the times when you  were a student can you tell me something all  

right so one of the best memories i've always had  was the experience that i always shared for me to  

organize a world-class event that was the world  festival of houston students in sochi in 2017.  

so we selected a group of the school story  selected a group of volunteers that would go to  

sochi to represent the school and to help organize  the festival for different youths coming together  

to share ideas to support each other to learn  how to start business startups and to learn and  

to network actually in general so for me it was a  very wonderful experience because i've never had  

such an opportunity in my life and i had to learn  to lead people i had to learn to serve people  

i had to learn to network and i had a lot  of friends they were very very good to me  

up until today so uh that really exposed me to  certain trainings that were for free and i was  

able to enjoy you know just staying in russia and  seeing different cultures being displayed all over  

the world just here in russia and at the end of  the festival i was opportunity to be one of the  

best volunteers and also i was opportunity to get  like an award from the president of russia so i  

have like a presidential award yeah from putin so  uh obviously we met and we had to take pictures  

with the minister of sports then in russia so  for me this has been one of my best experience  

because i've never had such a global award  and that has really helped me when i came back  

in my school that really also helped me when  i was applying for some scholarships that  

also helped to expose me to and to network more  with different people from all over the world  

yeah great so i think that is one of my main  experiences in russia and the other experience of  

course would be meeting russians and learning the  language because to me it's quite interesting when  

you meet people that you guys don't share the same  culture but at the same time you just understand  

that you you are all human so the meeting  point where i could make friends with russians  

go to russian parties taste russian meals they  were so nice i enjoy borscht and jerusalem soups  

and of course we have some very nice meals  as well like uh combining the gritskar  

with different spices of chicken and so in general  so the experience as well for me it's one of the  

best experiences i've ever had in my life because  it pushes me to something different and i love  

new experiences new challenges and all yeah so  i think that's also one of my best experiences  

and what about negative experience the negative  ones quite a lot quite a lot certainly the  

russian currency is a little bit better than  the nigerian currency so like uh some the the  

amount of money you could use let's say for  instance that is equivalent to the russian  

value it's valuable more uh in nigeria than here  in russia so when my parents sent me you know like  

some certain amount of money like 200 dollars 200  i tend to spend it quiet just yeah easily here in  

moscow because of course moscow is very expensive  apartment is expensive feeding transportation as  

well is very expensive so there were times when  i had no money and i still had to go to school  

so at that point i had to also blend in going to  school and also having to look for different ways  

to survive and yeah here i am today surviving  in moscow so is that point um that's why you  

started to teach english yeah yes yes exactly  so i had to teach english to you know russian  

kids how to teach english to business schools and  in some english certain schools are already like  

certified and at some point of course i had to  i made a lot of money as well from photography  

as a freelancer yeah that's great what  do people in nigeria think about russia  

a lot of a lot of a lot of talks about russia  certainly a lot of thoughts but in general i think  

the main thought about russia is that the russians  are racist so it's usually uh you know equated to  

a russian person to being a racist but sincerely  spain i think that is one of the myths that we  

need to overcome because when it comes to racism  i think russia is one of those countries where  

there is minimal racism yes they had the black  heads you know in the former soviet union that  

usually uh you know attacked foreign students but  i haven't had any experience uh like that and of  

course sometimes i've always had experience where  i felt that someone was being a racist to me but  

generally looking for me looking at that angle  as at this moment i've come to understand that  

the person was probably just defending he his  or herself at this certain point it wasn't that  

the person was being investors to me and it wasn't  because i was a foreigner so i had a very previous  

experience in my place of work so i i was late  for you know five minutes and i was asked to write  

i got a query from the head of um the doctors  to you know give reasons why i was late so i  

actually thought it was been racist to me because  i was a foreigner and i was running late but that  

same day i got to understand because he was so  rude to me and he was very tough on me that day  

but that's something i got to understand actually  he also did the same things to other every  

other person that was late as well so in general  racism it's relative it depends on what you think  

it's racism i've experienced more racism in my own  country and i've also experienced more racism in  

different countries as compared to what we have  here in russia so i think racism is one of those  

things that we need to correct that russians  are actually one of the friendliest if there  

is anything like that people in the world  that you can ever meet yes russians are mean  

that is the second opinion that people have about  russians and that is true russians are mean people  

but uh it also helps them to you know you  know mind their business they don't try to  

understand they don't try to care what you are  doing yes they're not the friendly people that  

are jumping up or up around trying to smile  or to they are mean on their very own but  

i miss that when you develop a rapport  when you develop a relationship with them  

they open up to you they are very friendly they  are very hospitable the next thing that i think  

i mean i think the whole world knows about them  is that they are very hospitable every home you  

come that is a russian home uh there is this form  of safety that you feel when you enter the house  

you know you are being welcomed you have been  treated right you have a lot of the present a  

lot of opportunities for you maybe to eat for  you to talk to them they want to know you they  

want to know your culture they want to learn more  about why you're in russia they want to know more  

about your lifestyle in your country and um for  me that is a very uh applaudable uh theme or uh or  

behavior about russians then on the other  hand yeah so i think that is also one of the  

uh thoughts that uh you know people outside russia  have towards russia that are actually correct yeah  

yeah i agree actually my favorite quote is there  is no bad nationality there are bad people yeah  

excellent so in every in every country definitely  you're gonna meet the good and bad people

so the fifth thing i really love about russia  is that russians love to enjoy during summer  

so a lot of russians do travel and they love  adventure and it's very important for us because  

you don't just walk throughout the  whole year and you don't get to travel  

so while i was growing i was an opportunity to  travel to different countries probably because my  

parents were always busy at work and they never  had time for us to travel together as a family  

but coming to russia you see how russian families  travel together to different countries and it's  

even funny but like countries like in egypt and  africa you see egyptians speaking russian because  

they have a lot of russian tourists that come  around during summer so it's so um admirable about  

them and i really love the fact that they love  to you know take adventures i also love russian  

style of art in terms of olympics like  in swimming i mean they are well known  

and in acrobatics and i really enjoy the russian  ballet dance and these are like the stuffs that i  

i feel like it's very peculiar to russia and  it's so so precious to them and it's very  

nice to watch them you know do the dances and all  yeah great but are there any things that you don't  

accept don't understand about russians you i don't  get i don't like winter i don't like the country  

it's so cold here in russia and i'm up until now  i'm not really used to the weather because it's  

so cold and you don't want to go outside so that  is one thing i don't like about russia because  

it's really really really cold then the one  thing i don't like about the people probably  

is just because i didn't grow up that way  is that russians i think they smoke a lot  

and then they drink a lot a whole lot how do you  think did russia changed for the past three months  

well i mean it's obvious we have a lot of  crisis just going right now in the world  

a lot of sanctions have been placed in russia  we've been cut from uh the main assets of for  

instance you know receiving money back from our  parents from home and our siblings or people that  

would love to you know send us some gifts and all  so we've had a lot of different changes and yes  

they've been very severe on us  as well as foreigners because  

uh we usually we don't live here we don't work  here sometimes we depend on our parents to send  

us some gifts send us some cards and all but if  we are considering just being or living in russia  

everything is okay and everything is fine i mean  here is safe we don't have any uh crisis going  

on right now i mean specifically in russia and  um we are hoping that very soon everything will  

also come to an end because we really want to  live in a world where there is peace yeah and um
