Highlights
Apple's ability to weave a compelling story around technology, even if it's not cutting edge, can intrigue many users.
The new Apple intelligence features, despite not being the most advanced, are expected to impress many users when they start shipping in the fall.
These features might not work for everyone, but they are designed to make devices feel smarter by automatically performing certain tasks.
The big question is whether these software features are enough to drive an iPhone upgrade cycle.
Apple's decision to limit new features to the 15 Pro and certain Macs, rather than older models, contrasts with Samsung's approach.
Surprisingly, Apple acknowledged OpenAI's contributions, allowing Siri to act as a front end to ChatGPT, which is uncharacteristic of Apple's usual control over its ecosystem.
There is a concern about potential issues arising from the integration with OpenAI, as Apple's experience might be impacted by OpenAI's unpredictable behavior.
Apple plans to introduce Google models and potentially others in the future, indicating a broader approach to AI integration.
The market's lukewarm reaction to Apple's announcements reflects doubts about Apple's expertise in this area and whether they did enough to impress.
Apple's enormous user base means their introduction of new intelligence features could significantly increase general awareness and usage of GenAI.
While not all features apply to everyone, the appeal of certain demos might drive interest and appreciation among a broad audience.
Simple features, like custom emojis, could drive adoption among younger users, highlighting the impact of seemingly minor updates.
Improving the texting experience between iPhones and Android phones, despite green bubbles, addresses a common user pain point.
Elon Musk's threats to ban iPhones over the ChatGPT partnership seem to be more about personal grudges than real security concerns.
Apple's commitment to security and privacy remains strong, as they plan to handle much of the AI processing on-device or in their own cloud.
Transcripts
[CC may contain inaccuracies] Your initial take on what Apple laid out, impressive or not?
Well, look, I think what they laid out was a very good story.
I mean, Apple's incredibly good at weaving a story together around
technology. I mean, it wasn't cutting edge stuff.
There were some people doing more advanced stuff.
But I think it was enough to get people intrigued.
And so I think that's important because, remember, you know, when it comes to
Apple, the number of people who use their products worldwide is so enormous
that they're going to actually introduce a lot of people to Jenn-air.
We've been talking about Jenn-air in the industry a lot, but in reality, most
average people haven't really experienced it yet.
And so I think what you're going to see with these Apple intelligence features
when they start shipping in the fall is that people are going to go, wow,
Actually, now I kind of get it and this is kind of cool.
Now, it's not going to work for everybody.
And there are some issues, but, you know, like, you know, like Steve said,
it's, you know, automatically doing certain things is really going to make
your device feel smarter. And at the end of the day, that's
important because Siri and other digital assistants have been incredibly
frustrating. So to be able to just say something and
and have it react and have it turn on certain features or functions.
I think people are going to enjoy that. So are these software features and
cutting edge enough, Bob, to really kick off an iPhone upgrade cycle?
Yeah, I certainly Brian, I mean, that's the big question, of course, is is it
enough to really get people to buy upgrades?
And of course Apple, unlike what we saw with Samsung, who for example, brought
features not only to their newest phones with two generations back, Apple said
only 15 pro and then certain Macs and then the future iPhones are going to
drive are going to be required for that. So the expectation is that some people
will buy it. I think some will.
You know, the thing that surprised me the most, though, to be honest with you,
is how much credit, in fact, they kind of gave to open.
I mean, some people kind of joked all of a sudden Siri is a front end to chat GBP
and that seems a little on Apple like. Right.
I mean, this is a company that's controlled the experience and all of a
sudden they're like, oh, yeah. I mean, of course they say, is it okay
if we use chat GB? People are going to get tired of doing
that. They're going to turn that off.
They're just going to use it. And then what happens if something weird
happens with open A.I.? Because let's be honest, weird things
have already happened and it would open a I.
And does Apple's experience get impacted from that now?
After the fact? They did a Q&A with press that said,
Hey, look, yes, we're also going to let Google models work, potentially others
down the road. But still, it clearly showed to me that
Apple didn't really have their act together to do the full set of
intelligence that they wanted to do and had to rely on partners.
Again, not very Apple like. Perhaps why the market reacted the way
it did. Which brings to mind, Bob, whether or
not this really is or not, you know, their area of expertise.
The reason I bring that up is, you know, the share price is flat year to date,
you know, down massively. It's come back all the way, effectively
flat. And there's the markets treated Apple
not like an air play and I'm wondering whether they've said enough for markets
to then treat it like an air stock like the others of course.
Yeah, no, it's a great question, David. I'm not sure that they did enough.
But at the same time, look, again, we got to remember, like I said, that their
impact is enormous. And I think really what they're going to
do is sort of set the stage for a broader gen air usage across more and
more devices because people will be introduced to it.
They're going to see it can do some pretty cool stuff and then they're going
to say, okay, now I get it, I understand it and I can appreciate the value.
And look, some of the demos they gave were pretty darn cool.
They don't apply to everybody, like I said, but they apply, I think, to enough
people that it's going to be important. And the other thing here's the other
thing to remember with Apple. So sometimes it's the dumb little
features that people really like, like the custom emojis.
You know, it could be that every twentysomething in the world goes, I got
to have custom emoji, so that's it. I'm going to do it because that.
Right. And quite honestly, the other thing
they're doing is they're bringing this to the iPhone, all iPhones, which means
texting between Android phones and Apple phones.
If you've ever had that experience. Photo quality is terrible.
Video quality is terrible. That has nothing to do with II.
That's going to work. It's going to be better.
You're still going to have green bubbles, but you'll get a better quality
texting experience. And frankly, for some people, that will
be more important than all of this other stuff.
Yeah, as you say this, it's the stupid, silly stuff, but that can change our
lives. What about what Elon Musk said?
I mean, he's he's threatening to ban iPhones and his companies because of
this chat. Gbtc partnership that Apple has gone
upon. Are the security risks warranted any
way, Bob? You know, I don't think they are.
I think this is, you know, classic Elon Musk posturing.
And, of course, you know, he's still upset about not really controlling open
area, even though he started it. I think there's a lot of personal
grudges going on there, to be honest with you.
But, look, I mean, Apple made it very clear they're going to do a lot of these
capabilities on the device on the phone we've heard other companies talk about
as well and then do some of it in the cloud.
The difference being they're going to do it in their own cloud, Apple's own cloud
on Apple's silicon based servers. It's actually existing Mac based
processors from the Mac Pro that they're going to put into these servers and
they're going to do it. And then the cheapest stuff.
Well, that's geeky, but I think this is just again, a reflection that Apple has
opened themselves up with this opening in collaboration to those kinds of
questions and those kinds of risks. I don't again, I don't think the Musk
thing is a serious concern. I think I was doing a pretty good job,
as they always do around security and privacy.
But at the same time, it just it's just enough to make a couple of people say,
okay, and that's the big issue. It's you know, it may not be reality,
but it raises the question and the concern and people start thinking that
way.
