Transcripts
for centuries the only aid that reached
Africa was in the form of foreign
missionaries aid in religion were
undeniably linked but what role does
faith played aid work today I'm heading
to a remote region of Mozambique to meet
with American missionaries who are
trying to help local communities in the
name of Christianity come around the
world with me on an epic journey as we
investigate what really works in
international aid
it's time to go beyond good intentions
a missionary comes in and does what
needs to be done to save the people
because the Bible says if you have two
cloaks and you see your brother without
any you should give one of them doing so
we come in and we do what we can with
the medicines we have with the food we
have with the clothing with blankets we
do what we can with what we have sharing
it with our brothers and sisters in the
Lord in 1991 Brenda Lang was called by
God to be a missionary in rural
Mozambique the specific calling he gave
me several things to do he says you will
go there and your work in the orphanage
you will build orphanages the African
Way keeping the kids in their culture
using local materials and make it as
self-sufficient as possible and I've
been doing that ever since Brenda
started an organization called orphans
unlimited here in the remote village of
balama she runs a feeding program an
orphanage a preschool and a foster care
program but I'm discovering that life as
a missionary is not always easy we only
go where nobody else wants to go so we
only work very very remote and you have
to be a certain kind of personality to
handle the pioneering experience I've
almost been killed at least 15 times in
the last 17 years most of it by
poisonous snakes I've had black mamba
under my bed three different times so
God has really built my faith and
without that I couldn't do what I'm
doing here Brenda's background as a
neonatal ICU nurse and a Texas rancher
seem to serve her well in this
environment we've got a mother that's
got a baby that's got severe respiratory
tract infection maybe he's actually
retracting in its chest which means just
sucking to get air into its lungs
and so I'm going to do a nasal lavage
which we will rinse out the nose and
give it some different kind of
antibiotics hopefully we can cleared up
but not all missionaries claim to have
relevant expertise God approaches people
who might be better educated better
qualified than better communicators they
assimilate foreign languages better
certainly than I do and God asked them
and they say no I'm enjoying my American
life and I'm not going I'm just the guy
that said yes I'm not highly qualified
I'm certainly not the cream of the crop
but I said yes and that qualifies you to
be here a dynamic between taking care of
people's spiritual and physical needs
seems like a slippery slope to me I'm
not surprised that I'm uncovering a
variety of opinions on the subject I
believe in saving souls if you ask me
which I would rather feet of stomach or
keep a child out of hell I'll try to
keep a child out of hell it's not enough
to just say God loves you and then walk
away when kids are dying of malaria or
diarrhea the church needs to be there to
show love in concrete ways and that's
the way of living out for love while
Brenda's primary focus is on providing
for the needs of orphans she doesn't
pass up opportunities to share her
Christian faith we require our workers
to come and show respect to God we don't
ask them to receive Jesus we don't we
asked him to listen to the word we had
six carpenters that all come in is
hardcore Muslims and one of them receive
Jesus about four months ago he's been
coming to church and reading this Bible
and listening and the others haven't
budged so we just keep feeding them the
word and being patient with them and
loving on them they know that when they
are sick I'll take care of them you know
so they feel the love of Jesus Brad's
approach to combining aidan religion is
a bit different than Brenda's today I
was out into tongu it's completely
Muslim village there's not a Christian
there and I went to speak to the chief
of the village I told the guy said I
will make you a well I'll drill one here
and I'll provide the pump it'll cost you
nothing I'll shoulder all the
responsibility for that I said but in
return I want to have an evangelistic
outreach I'm going to tell your people
about jesus and i'm going to ask them to
convert from Islam to Christianity and
I'm going to build a church and that
what the well is going to cost you he
said no problem he said you can have
your evangelist gallery you can build
your church and bring your pastor but we
need water we're dying and we've used
that method here quite effectively it
felt quite problematic for aid to be so
blatantly linked to conversion but then
again could these challenges be
outweighed by the fact that missionaries
tend to immerse themselves in
communities learn the language and stay
for long periods of time I will be here
until Jesus tells me to leave but I
don't think he's going to you as in 17
years why when you tell me now
so what do you think do missionaries
provide an effective model for helping
abroad is there any problem with having
religion and AIDS so closely linked we
want to hear your thoughts become part
of the dialogue at beyond good
intentions calm and join me next week as
I travel to the southern end of
Mozambique to investigate the realities
of microlending
