hey guys welcome back to World of
Warships today we're taking a look at
the Carl Johan this is a tier n European
Battleship that has some pretty insane
torps and really really good concealment
this ship is also pretty tanky the
reason we're taking a look at it though
is thanks to the tradein event of course
I looked at that yesterday I think I'm
going to put this video out on Saturday
since this is a bit of a time sensitive
thing don't typically do Saturday videos
but with the Carl Yan I think a lot of
You Are Ed in it and the reason being
which I didn't even think about until uh
after I posted the video and you guys
commented I think this is the first time
you're able to get Carl Yan again after
its initial event release where it was
in the premium shop for a set price and
that was it so this I think is the first
time you'll have to correct me on that
but it certainly is an opportunity to
get a ship that hasn't really been
available all that often and as for what
this ship is like well it's essentially
a European prince rpr it's going to have
smaller caliber guns it's going to have
really good concealment it's going to
have a lot of secondaries and it comes
with some Torpedoes as well the
difference is the secondaries are quite
a bit worse they don't have near the
accuracy or the range on them they are
really good at starting fires though
when they do hit but the Torpedoes here
are kind of the key you bring the
European Destroyer torps essentially
they do very little damage 10,700
but they go 133 1 12 km they go 86 knots
and they reload relatively quickly at 86
seconds base you also get 16 torps so
you get uh eight per side which is
pretty solid man it's really good
there's some downsides though the guns
are only 305 mm guns they don't have the
best dispersion or pen overmatch is
certainly not something they do and the
alpha damage seems a little bit low on
them uh if you're thinking about just
spamming high explosive the fire chance
is only 28% so it's a little bit rough
when it comes to main guns but you get
all of these other goodies to play
around with the recommended build in
Port is actually a full torp build and I
really really do not recommend that and
the reason being these torps as well as
your secondaries and Main guns are very
squishies you're actually going to lose
a lot of them temporarily or even
permanently throughout the battle so
going all in on Torpedoes that tend to
get knocked out isn't the best idea I
think they reload quick enough as it is
and uh well they're pretty handy man
they're really really good especially
when you're able to push in like this
this is a very early aggressive play
here in a tier 10 game the matchmaker is
not so good but I'll talk about that a
little bit later but this tankiness here
allowed us to push in specifically with
our concealment as well the conceal here
is so good it's like just over 10 1 12
km your secondaries when fully built for
range reach 10 and half km so you get
that similar idea of those German battle
cruiser line where you get get your
concealment almost matching your
secondary range that's kind of where
that feel comes from even though these
uh secondaries don't have that accuracy
but there sure are a lot of them and
it's fun to play around with certainly
now I'm going to use my Torpedoes here I
guess I was thinking about the DD I'm
not really sure uh this is certainly not
a situation where I'd want to use my
left side Torpedoes as I might have to
use them on this Wisconsin here we'll
see although I'm hoping that we as a
team can finish them off got a Monty
helping me as well hopefully we can deal
with him and at close range here you're
going to notice our armor benefits are
coming into play since the prince rup
gets that 27 mm bow we get a 32 mil bow
that's a pretty massive Improvement it
allows us to Auto bounce this Wisconsin
here with our bow armor and really not
take too much damage unfortunately one
of our torp tubes is temporarily taken
out as well as a gun happens a
lot I believe I was even running uh full
main guns tankiness like taking the
first upgrade slot for guns and torp
tubes as well as preved maintenance on
the commander so this is getting them as
tanky as I can and they still are going
to go down now here's where I'd love to
have torps on my left side right well
we're going to have to just try and push
past him and maybe get the right side
Torpedoes off I didn't play this one
particularly well to be honest with you
but that's okay this ship is really
meant for ranked battles brawls that
kind of thing he actually gets like 20K
in into our Stern there I was thinking
maybe he would overp us and uh we do end
up going down there unfortunately but
still a pretty fun little push there 2
million potential damage showing off the
tankiness that this thing can have and
when you're fighting your own tier
especially in smaller games this thing
is absolutely hilarious when you can get
it into closer ranges I would definitely
recommend you guys check out some of the
earlier videos that I put out on the Yan
I guess half a year ago a year ago now
something like that I had an absolute
blast because this is where the tone of
this video is going to shift
dramatically um I had a bad time playing
this ship for this video I got to be
honest with you and it comes down
to tier n Matchmaker these days guys
tier n matchmaker is something I've
talked about quite a bit we've dealt
with that when it comes to Coal ships I
was doing the that with the coal
cruisers at tier 9 was pretty rough one
of the main reasons I put them so low on
the rankings which just their Matchmaker
really is abysmal these days so many
games up into tier 10 and that's not
even counting the super ship games it's
very hard to play tier nine against
super ships let alone those tier 10s and
here is why there is a shikishima that
is just going to shoot us and is going
to be doing like 13 14 15K damage to us
thanks to all that overmatch at closer
ranges I might be able to do some Auto
bouncing stuff with our belt armor our
upper belt is actually pretty well
armored too but at these ranges plunging
fire our bow and Stern are 32 mm Our
Deck armor is 32 mm so yeah it's uh it's
a little rough there you notice our
Rudder got taken out alongside some of
our torp tubes yeah this is a very
squishy ship when it comes to its
modules and in these up tiers it's very
hard to play so I've lost like almost
all of my health here already and thanks
to losing my Rudder here I actually
wasn't able to turn out in time before I
got spotted again and uh so I'm going to
try and take refuge at this island
hoping that this good armor will help me
tank the shikishima I'm hoping at these
closer ranges he's going to hit our belt
armor and not do as much damage as he
does 15K to us which is pretty rough to
play against and that's why I bring up
uh super ships as well since there's
just so much 32 mil overmatch at those
higher tiers that's what we're really
reliant on check out those torp tubes by
the way would would love to run a torp
focus build with this ship
right that is three of the four
permanently taken out now to be fair I'm
not really going to survive much longer
here so does it really matter uh there's
that secondary accuracy not so good at
those longer ranges maybe better to run
more of a main gun build and then use
the secondaries At Close Quarters where
they might be a little more impactful I
tried to reverse and get away but the
jlin came around to spot us I was trying
to use the good concealment to get away
nearly did uh but unfortunately we eat
this fire and then the thunderer
finishes us off yeah that's a little bit
of a rough one
that was pretty unfortunate though um
running into 32 mil overmatch plus a
thunder spamming H some of the strongest
high explosive in the game so typically
or hopefully you're not going to have to
run into that and have your Torpedoes
permanently destroyed like that but it
can happen I got to say it can happen
and that's why again before this tone
shift of this video go back I said it go
back and watch some of the videos of
this ship when I was dealing with it on
release I got better Matchmaker and had
an app absolute blast and that's where I
think you're going to see this ship
perform extremely well in tier n ranked
season tier n brawls anything like that
I think you're going to have a lot of
fun with this thing just keep in mind
that random battles is hard for
secondary ships especially tier n
secondary ships it is really really
quite difficult and often times I'm
saving my secondary battleships these
brawling builds these ones that want to
get close with Torpedoes for those
smaller game modes where things tend to
work out just a little bit better now we
do follow up with like 10 12K there into
that GK broadside feels good but that
initial Salvo with all shatters into a
broadside GK at like 12 km that's that
pen issue of this ship and we can't
quite get through that uh GK belt armor
at least the lower belt where I had
aimed so I Rec corrected and did some
better uh better damage but still the
guns are a bit of a weak point and I
think the matchmaker is a bit of a weak
point I think the secondaries are a fun
me
but they are nowhere near as strong as
something like a prince R just for
context I guess the uh Yan here gets
around
327,000 DPM out of its secondaries
that's not counting for their uh
accuracy by the way and uh the rock gets
296 so you'd think it's around the same
but uh if I go at 10 km let's say that's
pretty far range but if I go to 10 km
the hitting hitting DPM is around 27,000
on the Johan for its secondaries where
Prince rre is 43,000 so almost double
and you get the option to pen 32 mil
with those rot brick secondaries too
it's not as good uh in those situation
so a lot of the time I would actually
prefer to run a rpr over a Yan uh it's
really the Torpedoes that are at the
advantage here as well as your better
armor in random battles though when
you're facing High tier super ships 32
mil overmatch it doesn't matter quite as
much and I think that's where I had just
a bit of a rough time with the ship uh
trying to record for this video although
you will notice when people push into
you this thing is just like a lot of
those European DDS it is a menace with
the torps man they you can just wiggle
back and forth and often times the torps
are going to be loaded on whatever side
you're trying to get to there's two long
range hits there in on the key I guess
it is and then uh the Michelangelo here
trying to run run us down with his
secondaries but we land three torps and
managed to take him out that's pretty
cool uh typically people aren't going to
be pushing in this aggressively but you
know this game is well and surely over
at this point so it makes sense they're
trying to clean up and get a little bit
of extra damage but it does show off the
torps man got a five five torp hits
feels feels good man um the speed is
very nice allowing you to lead really
well the spread is actually very narrow
for four Torpedoes sometimes you get
that with DDS where the narrow spread
I'm using air quotes here narrow spread
is actually not that narrow and then you
have to deal with a lot of torpedo
dispersion which is very frustrating so
at least here these spreads are
relatively narrow we do manage to get a
little bit of depth charge in on the sub
but you really don't want to be facing
too many Subs at least you get a hydro
right there's a hydro on this thing
there's a heal your AA is decent
relative to some of your counterparts
but I mean no surface ships really have
good AA I would
say not not great um that Hydro though
is a 5 km ship detecting Hydro so not
quite the 6 km or I think it's 5 and a
half on rpre to be fair 6 km the
standard German one let me just uh
double check so I'm not misleading
people it is 5 and a half okay it is 5
and A2 on the rubrick you get that fast
damage gone though as well which is nice
um another torp tube permanently
destroyed although I'm dead so does does
it really matter right
uh as for the build on a ship like the
uh Carl Yan here I am going to be going
with a bit of a hybrid secondary build
that's typically what I enjoy with these
things so I will take some secondaries
even though they're not as good here
it's just fun to mess around with the
close range action of this ship maybe
it'd be better if you didn't do that in
random battles but I'm personally just
never going to play this ship in random
battles for the most part I will for
some videos here and there but if I'm
going to play this ship and I'm looking
to have a good time with it I'm looking
for tier n ranked tier 9 brawls anything
that's more focused around close range
action um maybe that uh new game mode I
forget what they're calling it but uh
two updates from now maybe next update I
forget which one it is but they're
adding back a game mode that says uh you
just randomly get arms race Airship
escort and Convoy I think is the the
last one which maybe is more brawling
focused and so maybe I would play it in
that one as well but otherwise yeah just
very much a secondaries build hybrid
build you can go main guns you can go
secondaries I wouldn't recommend torps
even if even though they uh they do um
secondary mod getting us the range
aiming systems giving us a little bit
better accuracy on the guns which are
just kind of okay um you still get 9.2
km range though and that doesn't seem
like that good until you see the
concealment 106 here with the full build
the full secondaries though do mean you
get .1 km difference right it's it's
10.5 versus 10.6 that's pretty good you
absolutely have to take main Armament
mod one though and you have to take
prevented maintenance you have to take
both there is just there's no other
answer here this is just a must take on
this ship I thought with the good
concealment maybe brisk would be useful
and it was reasonably useful um
Adrenaline Rush always nice to have
extra heals cuz this is a tanky ship you
should be getting to those extra heals
um and then concealment of course is
very very useful unless you face uh
super ships and 32 mil overmatch and
Thunders with
h you should be getting to your heels uh
because it is relatively tanky just to
look at the armor here 32 mil on the
deck right that's where we were getting
just absolutely blasted by overmatch on
that shikishima 32 mil bow uh 220
275 150 so guarantees a lot of full pens
when you go broadside but if you're
angling you should you should be
bouncing a lot actually it it should be
pretty tanky and I think in my previous
videos when I was first looking at this
ship better Matchmaker games uh it
certainly felt much much more tanky than
than this game did and just as a
comparison because I was talking about
rpre quite a bit this is rpre armor
right also similar here case mate wise
but you get 27 only 30 I guess here
which is kind of nice but 27 here 27
back here and then still 32 on the deck
armor so you get more HP as as well
right this is only 63 the uh the Johan
gets like 73 basically so you get like
10K more HP you get better bow armor uh
it should be a lot tankier I think I
just had some unfortunate Matchmaker or
maybe tier n Matchmaker sucks these days
I'll leave it up to you to decide on uh
on which one you think that is and
lastly before I go here the main reason
we're looking at this one today is it's
an interesting ship from from this
tradein event of course but you haven't
been able to get this one all that
easily and all that often it was a
limited time thing in the premium shop I
believe I think mumo is also like that
and that one is actually quite
comfortable in today's meta thanks to
those uh two options with Torpedoes so
those two are pretty interesting to me
and uh I should have I should have
realized that uh before yesterday's
video but hey I could just quickly make
something to put out on the weekend and
uh give you guys some more thoughts um
it's still a fun ship I just think if
you're going to get this thing save it
for ranked save for brw um or just hope
you get some good Matchmaker and randoms
I guess there's still fun to be had
there don't worry it's just a little bit
painful getting into those super ship
games and knowing you're just not set up
for Success there that's going to do it
