play00:12

good afternoon everybody um today I will

play00:16

share with you my journey of an

play00:19

outsider I work in the fashion industry

play00:22

and I pretty much pursue all the

play00:24

activities of a

play00:28

designer

play00:57

we do biannual shows in Paris

play01:00

we have our own temporary

play01:07

spaces I spend a lot of time in

play01:09

fittings however I'm a bit of a misfit

play01:12

in the fashion industry because while

play01:14

whilst I run a commercial business I

play01:16

also embody the art World make films and

play01:20

installations and I show them in

play01:22

Galleries and

play01:25

museums interestingly this condition has

play01:27

given me the freedom to be an immigrant

play01:29

within various disciplines fusing

play01:31

unlikely worlds and cultures and this

play01:33

has helped me to embrace

play01:36

dualities in my own life and in my work

play01:39

and many of the work I'll be sharing

play01:40

with you today wouldn't be possible had

play01:42

I not worked in this

play01:45

way this picture age 11 in my room in

play01:48

Cyprus probably marks the roots of my

play01:51

outstander condition uh you can see the

play01:54

book in the corner which represents my

play01:56

obsession with Technology based on

play01:58

aircraft you can see the the white desk

play02:01

which was the first piece I was lucky

play02:02

enough to design and my interest in the

play02:05

world of women is marked by The Dressing

play02:07

Table in the corner that belong to my

play02:09

step

play02:11

sister these are some of the titles I'll

play02:14

be uh sharing with you today that

play02:16

informed the work and I'll first start

play02:19

with

play02:23

separation when I was seven I was sent

play02:26

to England from North Cypress to study

play02:28

in boarding school and I pretty much

play02:31

felt separated from my mother I felt I

play02:32

was too young to really go abroad and in

play02:36

those days uh it was very expensive to

play02:38

communicate by telephone so we used to

play02:40

write arram letters to each

play02:42

other many years later I decided to look

play02:45

at this uh situation and created the AML

play02:48

clothing series uh which is a dress you

play02:51

can write on you can spray perfume on

play02:53

you can wear you can wash and I like to

play02:56

hear the idea that you can send the

play02:59

dress to a loved one and maybe this

play03:01

dress can become a token for your

play03:02

absence or your

play03:12

presence unlike a dress that you can

play03:14

send by mail uh this was a dress I

play03:16

covered in iron filings and I buried it

play03:18

in the ground for several months and

play03:21

after I dug out the dress uh I felt that

play03:23

the dress actually acquired its own life

play03:26

and became what I call a piece of future

play03:28

archaeology here I was interested in the

play03:31

idea that a garment that has a certain

play03:33

value now could become part of an

play03:36

archaeological Archive of the

play03:47

future during the atrocities in Cyprus

play03:50

in the 60s between Greek and Turkish

play03:52

cypriots uh my mother's uh family had a

play03:55

warning that there was going to be a

play03:56

raid in her area and many years later I

play04:00

asked her what was the first thing you

play04:01

thought about taking with you at that

play04:03

moment in time and she said to me old

play04:08

photographs and

play04:11

food then I decided to look at this idea

play04:13

and take it a lot further and I started

play04:15

to look at how you could carry your

play04:17

possessions with you much more

play04:19

efficiently so I looked at how you can

play04:21

transform Furniture in order that you

play04:23

can carry them away quickly at the time

play04:25

of war and this led to this next piece

play04:28

I'll show you

play04:54

fore

play04:58

name

play05:14

M

play05:28

you

play05:59

so

play06:00

uh talking about having to move move out

play06:03

of your home at the time of War and the

play06:05

displacement that creates uh the next

play06:08

film is a meditation on how much moving

play06:10

around and the isolation this is

play06:12

creating uh the journey starts from

play06:14

London and goes to Istanbul uh ends in

play06:17

the bossus which which divides Asia and

play06:28

Europe

play07:56

another aspect of Our Lives which I find

play07:58

fascinating is the speed in which our

play08:00

lives are evolving from the speed of the

play08:02

body to the speed of consumption to the

play08:04

economy and inertia the next

play08:07

project uh starts off with uh the

play08:10

crystallized moment of a crash as a

play08:13

result of speed this is n Gallery

play08:18

environment then in a fashion

play08:25

show and this is its most commercial and

play08:29

uh let's say accessible uh ramification

play08:32

uh Swift shoe with develop with

play08:35

pummer this idea is probably a very good

play08:37

example of how uh one thought can lead

play08:40

to three forms of expression in a

play08:42

gallery environment fashion show and uh

play08:45

as an accessible uh usable uh

play08:51

product going from speed one of the most

play08:54

modern experiences in the world uh the

play08:57

next project is about looking at the

play08:58

past

play09:01

and how religious ideals of the past has

play09:04

been replaced by our obsession with

play09:06

lifestyle in

play09:08

doente I looked at josing uh an ethereal

play09:12

image of the body inspired by Jacob's

play09:14

letter hence the hands climbing up the

play09:18

body and uh looked at how I could fuse

play09:21

that with uh image of the body from the

play09:24

French Riviera from the

play09:28

60s

play09:29

I was raised by women so for me in my

play09:32

fashion it's very important to empower

play09:33

women uh and the kind of woman that I

play09:35

project is is a woman that's

play09:37

self-confident and uh who is not an

play09:40

object and who doesn't have to hide

play09:42

behind our

play09:49

clothes here the the Peeping lady is

play09:53

hiding behind the clothes but in fact

play09:54

she was merged with the folds in the

play09:58

garments

play10:03

okay so uh in armide Leela uh you will

play10:08

see the previous image from doente and

play10:12

here the Turkish singer stup erer is

play10:14

actually wearing a piece of clothing

play10:16

from the previous fashion show that you

play10:18

saw uh this is a 3D print of her uh done

play10:22

5 years ago and it took us actually 3

play10:24

days to print unlike uh some of the

play10:27

demonstrations uh ear in the week and uh

play10:31

I wanted to really say that music is a

play10:35

very big source of inspiration for me

play10:36

because I find that uh it's the most

play10:40

profound uh kind of uh let's say

play10:43

experience we could have and visual

play10:45

people try to create the same effect but

play10:46

I feel they they can never really create

play10:48

the same impact here I look at Turkish

play10:51

classical music uh because this music is

play10:54

evolved from the cost pollination of

play10:56

many cultures in that region and I'll

play10:59

show you an nextt from this

play11:27

project

play11:57

fore

play12:10

as a three-year-old I was obsessed with

play12:11

the Bonet man and at that time I was in

play12:14

I was in London with my parents and

play12:18

um my father said to me that we were

play12:20

going to actually go and visit the Binet

play12:22

man and as turkey cypriots never go

play12:24

empty-handed I would also take uh some

play12:27

Turkish delight for him and uh we drove

play12:30

from Finchley North London to Madame tus

play12:34

swords and because as a three-year-old I

play12:37

have no concept of of distance and time

play12:40

I actually thought we drove to America

play12:42

to see Steve

play12:44

Austin and this project uh next is

play12:48

probably the uh is the reason why um I

play12:52

actually um went ahead because I was

play12:56

interested in technology from that age

play12:58

and I guess uh interested in the

play13:00

apparent impossibility of

play13:03

Technology uh for this project 111 uh I

play13:07

wanted to make dresses that could run

play13:08

themselves bit bit like bionic dresses

play13:11

and uh thematically I wanted to look at

play13:15

uh maybe how the environment could

play13:17

affect the image of the Body for

play13:19

instance have wars have have uh led to a

play13:22

disempowered or an empowered image of

play13:24

the body or how movements have led to a

play13:28

liberated image of the body here I

play13:30

worked with uh people from many

play13:32

different disciplines mechanical

play13:34

engineers uh programmers people that had

play13:37

never worked on projects like this

play13:38

before and we developed uh six dresses I

play13:42

will share with you five of them uh

play13:45

which uh morphed mechanically to to

play13:48

actually Mark uh a change of an era in

play13:52

each

play13:53

dress and you will you will see an

play13:55

excerpt of this as the finale of the

play13:57

show

play14:27

w

play15:27

w

play15:36

being an immigrant within uh different

play15:38

disciplines has allowed me to discover

play15:40

worlds that I wouldn't have never

play15:41

discovered otherwise and I've learned to

play15:44

se that outside the status is a

play15:46

privilege allowing me to see that uh

play15:49

Alien worlds can coexist and can Inspire

play15:51

each other even leading to also uh

play15:54

connections that might eventually uh

play15:57

actually end up

play15:59

uh developing new disciplines Al

play16:01

together thank

play16:10

you
