Transcripts
welcome back all right so power rankings
for January the 27th
2024 uh and next week of course is the
allstar break a lot of teams start the
All-Star break tomorrow I start my
All-Star break tomorrow uh so I'm not
going to be doing what I did last year
last year I was trying to leave the the
park and watch hockey games like what
leaving Disneyland to watch hockey games
it was just an absolute complete hassle
I'm not doing that this time around so
just throwing that out there so people
know uh I will be filming a video that
will go in place of Power Rankings next
Saturday but that being said let's jump
into this week's Power Rankings and I'm
I'm going to do my best to enjoy my week
off um I I think I'm kind of nervous
because I got most of my pre-recorded
videos already done I don't really have
to do a lot tomorrow last year I
panicked had to do them all at the very
end I had to do like 40 videos in a day
all right so number 32 and at the bottom
of this week's Power Rankings dropping
two spots is Chicago now Chicago is
keeping games close Chicago is not
winning games but they're keeping games
close so that's the good news all they
need is some offense some creativity
some some luck uh they haven't had luck
they don't have a lot of creativity
offensively they work really hard I'm
not going to say anything bad about Luke
Richardson's coaching I think he gets
the most out of these guys he can but
yeah they're 32nd this week number 31
moving up one spot from last
week Anaheim so there you go I'm going
down to Anaheim you're not lost on the
board all right uh but Anaheim uh all
all jokes aside they did they did beat
an or Minnesota tonight um they're not
going to make the playoffs obviously but
you know staying competitive and I'm I'm
hoping I enjoy there is a game I'm going
to see this week I'm going to be at it
which is Anaheim at home against San
Jose and that's the last game that's on
January 31st before the All-Star break
so uh yeah Anaheim man's up 31st and
their opponents are number 30 uh number
30 this week up one spot from last week
is San Jose uh three game winning streak
got snapped today that's right they were
on a three-game winning streak way to go
San Jose the Sharks uh so San Jose not
making the playoffs but it's the battle
for 30th I'm going to witness firsthand
I might take notes I haven't decided yet
I might I might even talk to them about
you know loaning me a whiteboard or
whatever uh we'll see we'll see if I get
creative or if everybody just wants to
go back to the hotel after the game
everybody I mean the whole family's
coming with me so they may not want to
stick around after but at anyway great
uh yeah San Jose Anaheim I'm kind of
looking forward to seeing that and San
Jose moves up to 30th this week uh
number 29 dropping one spot from last
week Ottawa uh the s that that game
tonight just a microcosm of how they can
look good one period they can look good
they've got it together and then the
rest of the game they're an absolute
complete unmitigated
disaster it's SE AWA way uh it has to be
driving jacqu Marte crazy but when he
inherited the team they weren't in the
play playoff Chase anyways uh it just
feels like last year we saw some some at
least some hope for S fans and they've
just squashed it this year they've just
absolutely squashed it I don't I don't
know how you fix this uh number 28 also
dropping one spot from last week because
they got ped and that's Buffalo uh
Buffalo did beat San Jose today they
beat La as well they lost against
Anaheim and yeah so they end up dropping
one spot uh California games generally
don't move move teams up if they win it
can move teams down if they lose in
Buffalo's case they're already near the
bottom of the board yeah so uh yeah
Buffalo with a good record against San
Jose they're ahead of San Jose on the
board and again if Buffalo could get
like five or six wins in a row something
something but as I said in the review
tonight it feels like we're starting to
see a separation between teams in the
playoffs and not in the playoffs in the
East we're not seeing that same
separation in the west but maybe we will
after the deadline uh or after after the
allstar break as we go towards the
deadline number 27 moving down two spots
from last
week Montreal uh the Montreal Canadians
uh back below NHL 500 uh they they do
know how to get points here and there
and and they work really hard uh and and
so for I I don't think there's any
reason to think that Marty San Louie
won't be their coach as long as he wants
to be he's getting the most out of this
team he can uh the fact they take
Pittsburgh overtime mildly impressive
although Pittsburgh's not above the
playoff line either so yeah Montreal
drops a couple of spots this week many
apologies to people who are going to get
upset about it but that's that's where
it is uh number 26 moving up three spots
from last week and kind of upsetting the
whole apple cart here Columbus uh so
Columbus I bumped them up as soon as I
saw them get that lead on Vancouver uh
didn't bump them up further because they
didn't hold that lead but you know what
they be they won in Calgary uh they've
looked good over the last week it really
is the third period the third Peri just
killing this team so Columbus moves up
we'll see if they stay there uh it feels
like that's one of the higher spots
they've had this year but yeah 26 I I
think they're they're going to win some
games after the All-Star break if they
can keep this up they seem to be
building some some chemistry on their
lines here so we'll see if the the
darkest part of The Season's behind them
obviously we're not going to be talking
about playoffs but if they can at least
have a a good second half of the season
number 25 the last team in this row
moving up one spot from last week
Minnesota uh the wild would have been
out of this row but then they lost
against Anaheim tonight and I felt like
you know what they belong in the bottom
row um Minnesota finds themselves two
games below NHL 500 at this point uh I I
think I can say they're not going to
make playoffs without upsetting
Minnesota fans uh because yeah it just
doesn't look like this team is is going
to keep it together they're not going to
make the playoffs and again as I've
mentioned in once once we get to that
power rankings video on Minnesota I talk
about it I I don't know how you fix
Minnesota either as much as I'm
bewildered as to how to fix Ottawa not
sure you fix Minnesota this is why I
haven't been doing the videos on it
because it's like I could just put all
the numbers on the board and all the
players and just go I I don't know how
to fix any of this this is just a mess
uh but yeah so Minnesota rounds out the
bottom row number 24 same spot as last
week New York Islanders so Patrick W
takes over under Patrick w one two and
one so far so not that far off of how
they were playing before Patrick W took
over you can see the frustration you can
see that he's doing his best to turn
things around but it it is a lot of work
I I I would imagine it's sinking in with
him right now if he didn't know already
probably de uh it's going to take a lot
of a lot of work and probably some time
to turn the Islanders around and it's
unlikely that the Islanders end up in
the playoffs uh this season I I don't
see them being a playoff team all right
so that's the Islanders number 23
dropping one spot from last
week the Arizona Coyotes uh rough road
trip uh going through Tampa Bay Florida
Carolina that's the new sha Valley of
the shadow of death uh for teams to walk
through uh I I used to say that about
the California road trip uh people would
ask oh if you watch the conu game like
yeah they're in the Valley of the shadow
of death I don't watch the games in
California that was well before I had a
channel uh now I feel like it's that
that East Coast southeast part of the
the schedule that uh yeah Arizona just I
feel bad for them they weren't ready for
this Tampa Bay Florida Carolina just not
they're not in that league so we'll see
how Arizona does coming out of the break
and whether or not they can turn things
around but it it definitely feels like
they're trending towards not being a
playoff team which we suspected before
the season started but they were so
close right so at any rate they're 23
this week number 22 also dropping one
spot from last week the Washington
Capitals so for the Caps uh the the
issues are still the same they do have
issues with scoring although they did
come back and tie Dallas before losing
in
overtime there're this is a team that uh
yeah they have they have challenges with
scoring goals their goal ending is
really good their defensive structure I
think is pretty good too it's just it's
a matter of where the goals are going to
come from oetkin had one today it was on
power play goal too maybe right maybe
there's a run there maybe he can go on
one final big scoring binge but it does
feel like those days are behind him and
so the capitals 22nd on the board this
week number 21 also dropping one spot
from last
week Calgary uh the Flames tonight's win
over Chicago wasn't pretty I I can't
pretend it is uh but it's a win and they
desperately needed that win they could
not afford to lose against Chicago
tonight uh so their faint playoff hopes
are faint but there's hope there uh
we'll we'll see see how things go coming
out of All-Star break but uh yeah
Calgary's odds I I don't like their odds
right now um which is is strange because
before the season started I don't know
if I would have had them in the playoffs
necessarily but I I figured they'd be
closer than what they are it's just been
been kind of tough to watch them uh
number 20 on the board dropping four
spots from last week four the LA Kings
yeah uh so the kings were number one at
one point this this season those days
are gone
um and it looks like the playoffs may
eventually be gone for them as well
because there are teams below the
playoff line who are playing well enough
that they're going to catch the Kings
because the Kings only have two wins in
their last 15 games so la is probably
going to be glad to have the break too
uh I would imagine that uh my next Power
Rankings they should start moving up
again they're not as they're they may
not be as good as the team that set that
that record winning streak at the start
of the season but they shouldn't be this
bad either so the truth is probably
right in the middle uh it's a matter of
finding that middle and if they don't
find it soon they may be in the outside
looking in uh at playoff time number 19
dropping one spot from last
week so mostly pretty small moves right
so moving down one spot is New Jersey uh
that game against Tampa Bay tonight it's
it's just it's another another instance
of them just not being good enough uh
the New Jersey Devils have had that now
they're missing Jack Hughes and they're
missing douge Hamilton and they don't
have a goal tender they have a lot of
faith in right now and I get all of that
but still for power rankings reasons
they're 19th on the board and there's no
guarantee that the longer this goes on
the harder it's going to be to just turn
things around so hopefully Hughes comes
back as soon as possible hopefully the
goal tending straightens itself out
whether it's one of the goalies they
have making it work
or they go out and find one but yeah
they're they're in pretty pretty bad
shape right now number 18 moving up one
spot from last
week just the one spot so not a huge
move up but it's a move up and that's
Pittsburgh so they've just switched
places with the New Jersey Devils um
Pittsburgh finding themselves not too
far out of a playoff spot themselves and
so we'll see if Pittsburgh can go on a
bit of a run after the All-Star break as
well uh they still have a good team I
don't know if they have a great team
they have a good team they have good
goal tending there are enough good parts
with Pittsburgh that they should push
their way towards a playoff spot but the
East is going it's not going to be easy
uh the the spots that look like they
maybe were a bit vulnerable don't look
as much or as vulnerable now as they did
a couple weeks ago all right number 17
on the board staying in the same spot as
last
week Seattle uh the Seattle Kraken um
they they had some losses they get a
couple of wins well they had the loss
last night against St Louis right I was
thinking of the win over Chicago uh and
then yeah that they they they snatched a
loss from the jaws of Victory against St
Louis uh for for Seattle they they do
not look like a team that's going to
make the playoffs either they're getting
enough points in extra time that they're
keeping themselves in the hunt if it
wasn't for the system of points the NHL
has if you didn't get a point for losing
in overtime or shootouts they'd be
nowhere near a playoff spot but they
have 10 points in extra time so we'll
see if Seattle can can get things
cobbled together and make a run at this
uh I I don't know they they had that
nice long winning streak and since the
winning streak ended they've gone back
to being mediocre so we'll see uh number
16 dropping eight spots from last week
eight just jaw-dropping eight I should
use this one tonight yeah let's use this
one tonight Philly yep the Flyers drop
eight spots from last week so they go
from the end of the first row to the end
of the second row and they it just looks
ugly now now I will agree with there was
a comment I saw on the channel That was
you know they're exhausted the
schedule's been rough they've played
more hockey than everybody else in the
last month there are some teams that
have played maybe 12 games or 13 they've
played 17 games in the last 31 days
Philadelphia has to be exhausted so
enjoy the break refocus and come back
one thing with the way Philadelphia
plays hockey Torell hockey is exhausting
it is work more work more work like just
just physical shot blocks it's it's very
very much it's a game that I would
imagine takes a a ridiculous amount of
energy to play so I agree that they need
the break but I also busted them down
because they looked bad this week so
they they did not look good this week
there have been weeks where they've
looked good in losses this was not one
of those weeks uh number 15 moving up
eight spots from last
week St Louis yep the St Louis Blues so
the blues move up eight spots so last
week St Louis was here this week they're
up here and there you go uh the St Louis
Blues had a really good week uh they go
out west and they played really really
well uh and yeah I I think the comeback
wins are impressive I I think the fact
that they got the win in Vancouver was
impressive as well I know I know kuck
fans are going to complain uh that's why
I mentioned that the other night isn't
that I I hate St Louis or anything that
I didn't mentioned on a St Louis
overtime goal it's that um I know that
Vancouver fans are really passionate and
they feel like in any way shape and form
Vancouver got hosed in a game they'll
let you know so I I felt like all right
I'm just going to say it but at any rate
yeah St Louis moves up eight spots this
week to 15th and with with LA fading St
Louis could jump into a wild card spot I
could absolutely see that happening uh
and they could be dangerous come playoff
time because bennington's been playing
well all season so if their defense
really gets things figured out they
could be quite dangerous uh number 14
moving up one spot from last
week I'll use this one sure Nashville uh
the PRS uh quite the week overall and
and honestly Nashville's playing well
now they did lose today against Edmonton
but I didn't move them down for that
because Edmonton's won 2 three 4 6 12
denominator 48 60 16 games so yeah 16
wins in a row I'm not going to start
dropping teams down when they lose
against a team this playing that that
well so uh for Nashville uh they move up
one spot from last week I thought they
played well against Edmonton too that
game easily could have gone the other
way Skinner stole that game Skinner's
playing so well right now so yeah I
didn't I didn't punish Nashville for
that loss uh number 13 dropping four
spots from last week New York Rangers
yeah the Rangers have been struggling
and they find themselves almost smack
dab in the middle of this board they did
get get the 7 to2 win over Ottawa Ottawa
is here therefore I did not move the
Rangers up tonight for that 7 to2 win
over Ottawa because Ottawa is here and
Ottawa seemed to be getting things
together and then tonight nope it all
fell apart again so uh the New York
Rangers did well to go out there and
score seven straight goals against the
Ottawa Senators and win a No Mercy game
uh but yeah the the Rangers have had a
rough time of it they really needed that
win tonight and they really need the
break too so the Rangers 13th I don't
expect them to drop much further than
that uh number 12 moving up two spots
from last
week torona uh the Toronto Maple Leafs
move up two spots from last week uh the
backto backs against Winnipeg very
impressive and so we'll see if again
coming out of the break whether or not
they can continue that but Toronto looks
like they've they've got it together the
most impressive thing in the winds over
Winnipeg is defensively how they played
and uh Sam sonov did have the shut out
in the first game and he played really
well in the second game as well but I
was really impressed by the defensive
side of it that's been the issue for
them much of this season and so if
they've started to get that together uh
Toronto could be quite dangerous after
the break themselves uh number 11
dropping one spot from last
week Dallas uh Dallas Dallas drops
they're they're inconsistent in games
they're inconsistent from one shift to
the next I didn't like how they blew the
for to to lead against Washington now
they just sat back they did win that one
in overtime but I felt like the 10 teams
that are ahead of them on the board are
just playing better uh one thing I
wanted to say too the teams from 12 and
higher are playing really well right now
the teams in this half of the board
mixed results and it it does feel like
we're we're coming out of this period of
time where it really is just the middle
of the season and and all of that fun
stuff and so after the All-Star break
the the hockey will be better
and we should see some movement on the
board then too I had to pause cuz bear
was sitting on the base of this and I'd
rather she didn't cause it to fall over
as entertaining as that might be for all
you find people on the internet I'd
rather not have to pick this up and put
all the pucks on it again and maybe have
to deal with a cat that's been injured
anyways uh so yeah Dallas drops the one
spot this week uh moving into the top 10
now and moving up one spot from last
week the Vegas golden kns so Vegas is in
the top 10 uh what if been higher if not
for tonight's result but tonight's
result told me you know what they're
they've been playing well but this other
team's just playing better than they are
so Vegas 10th on the board they're
having a decent road trip tonight they
suffered a setback uh but they do they
just switch places with Dallas this week
that's all that happened so um again
usually at this time of year you don't
see huge moves uh just basically what I
consider to be like Market Corrections
this team is too high up this team's too
low down uh there was a couple of those
this week week they're both right here
Vegas moves up the one spot uh number
nine moving up three spots from last
week yep
three Tampa the Tampa Bay Lightning are
almost back in the top row um right now
the lightning are playing really really
good hockey and I I really shuddered to
think what they might be able to do
after the All-Star break I would be very
surprised if they're not in the top row
the next time I do a power rankings in
two weeks um they might even end up in
the top five within a couple of weeks
the way things been going for them
lately so that rounds out the third row
let's go ahead and get into the top row
now by third row I mean you know this is
the third row I've done this technically
is the third row this is the second row
I'm aware uh number eight not that tired
number eight moving up five spots from
last week yep
five the Red Wings of Detroit uh
Detroit's in the top
row that's rare I know that's rare I did
the
whole um standing like the whole graph
on who's been we and do I have it in
front of me to talk about Detroit being
in the top row nope although I will say
this uh Ivon and I are going to be
tracking this going forward uh so
tonight's Power Rankings go straight
into uh the files she has on the
computer and we're going to start
digging into the data and I'm going to
enjoy doing videos on what the data
tells me about teams and who peaked
where and when and all that so Detroit
this may very well be a peak for them at
eight they may go higher uh this is a
team that as long as lions giving them
the goal tending they are right now this
is a team that's going to be dangerous I
I don't think like there's not going to
be any pressure on them in the playoffs
so yeah they're going to be really
dangerous come playoffs should they make
it right now it looks like they're going
to uh number seven dropping five spots
from last week but Winnipeg had a tough
week now I think Winnipeg is just
they're missing some key guys I think
that to what happens is you're at the
top of the league things are going well
and it's just it's hard to keep that up
so Winnipeg drops the same as Colorado
dropped last week last week it was
Colorado dropping three spots down to
seven this week it's Winnipeg dropping
five spots down to seven because the
margin for error in this top seven is
very very small so Winnipeg has a bit of
a rough week they're at seven if they
have a good week they'll move back up
but I did feel like the six teams ahead
of them are playing better than they are
right now uh that being said I hope
Winnipeg stays in the hunt and and ends
up maybe winning their division because
if they go into a 23 scenario with say
Dallas I a that would be a really really
fun Series in this house because Dallas
one of my teams and Winnipeg one of my
Wes teams uh but I I do think Dallas
would probably win that series just a
gut feeling I have I would be fine
though with Dallas losing to Winnipeg in
the playoffs should that happen but
getting ahead of myself aren't I anyways
there you go uh Winnipeg at number seven
on the board this week which means we
will not have Canadian 123 this week uh
number six moving up one spot from last
week the Avalanche Colorado uh Colorado
had a good week uh they move up the one
spot uh Nathan McKinnon continues to
score at a ridiculous rate he is on on
Pace for ridiculous Point totals I think
there's an official ridiculous should be
declared at like 130 points at that
point it's just ridiculous we shouldn't
even count them after that we should
just go you know what you've got 130
points we're going to start giving your
points to your teammates you're just
being greedy all kidding aside uh
McKinnon's been fantastic Mar's been
excellent uh gorev's played well
recently too there's reason to think
that yeah the ABS once we get to playoff
time there's going to be a lot of people
taking the ABS to win the Stanley Cup uh
number five on the board this week same
spot they were last
week same spot as last week is Boston uh
the Bruins some ups and downs this week
uh the game against Carolina was a bit
of a tough one for them and then they
have the game today against Philadelphia
a bit of a laugher which helped to move
Philadelphia all the way down to 16th uh
but for Boston they go into the the the
break tied for first in the league with
Vancouver not bad not bad at all I'm
appreciative I I think that's uh that's
kind of fun now I know that there are no
fans outside of Boston fandom that want
that I am well aware that there's a
bunch of people watching this that made
the doct or made the Mr Yuck face when
they heard that uh if you don't know who
Mr Yuck is you're you're probably a
generation younger than I am
but uh for yeah for
Boston I I don't know what they're going
to do come playoff time I have no idea
but they're on quite the run and yeah so
Boston number five this week number four
and same spot as last week is Florida so
Florida stays fourth um I thought
Florida had a decent week and again you
know they have like little losing
streaks here and winning streaks here
and I just think I think Florida's that
good I I think Florida is one of the
best teams in the league I don't think
anybody wants to play them in the first
round I know Boston wouldn't want to
play them in the first round last year
was bad enough but this year uh if it
was Florida in the first round I don't
see how it would be because one or the
others should finish first in the
division but uh I I wouldn't want to see
Florida in the first round this year I
think they're going to be very tough to
beat uh number three on the board moving
up three spots from last
week so one of those rare um pretty
substantial moves up the board in the
top top six is Carolina uh the canes
almost ended up second tonight they did
uh almost ended up second but they end
up third uh their shot suppression I
talked about it in the review tonight
I'll talk about again here they allowed
three shots in the last 40 minutes
against Arizona just you know the amount
of the amount of patience the amount of
uh just defensive awareness uh the fact
they don't take a whole bunch of
penalties in that either it's just it
it's some something to watch now it's
not the prettiest of hockey but it's
something to watch when you're thinking
you know the Zamboni could save some
energy and just have to basically do one
end of the rink and not even worry about
the other because I don't know the
Puck's been there all night so yeah
Carolina is playing some pretty good
hockey if they can keep up that shot
suppression especially going into the
playoffs uh again that's a team that
will be one of the favorites as they've
been all throughout the year anyways all
right number
two and dropping one spot from last week
Vancouver uh so if Vancouver had lost
tonight against Columbus if that score
from the second period had held up and I
I never should have thought that it
would because Columbus all apologies to
Columbus they still moved up this week
but um yeah Vancouver would have been
third but as it stands they end up
staying at second I just couldn't have
them in first they lost against St Louis
this week um and and that's that's that
they just they could not stay uh um in
in first place and against Columbus they
needed the huge comeback to win that so
Vancouver still playing really well
going into the break and being number
two on the board that's fantastic
absolutely fantastic so the all-time
Power Rankings uh Vancouver is not that
high up but you know what it it if they
keep playing like this they're going to
keep climbing that so you know next year
before the before the allstar break if I
do 30 32 teams again Vancouver may be
higher than where they are I'm not
telling you where they are so number W
this week moving up two spots from last
week to the surprise of no one really is
Edmonton um I I've always felt like if
if it takes a while for a team to get to
number one that's probably the right
call uh the Edmonton Oilers 16 straight
wins and they've been first since that
15th win in fact when I got to Edmonton
on the 32 Team videos I did on on the
alltime power rankings I did reveal that
the Oilers were number one because I
knew they were going to be number one
tonight
um unless something crazy happened and
they lost against Nashville by a huge
score and if Vancouver just destroyed
Columbus something like that then it
would be hard for me to argue Edmonton
over Vancouver I've seen the comments
about how oh they've got an easy
schedule okay so why doesn't anybody
else do it they're not the only team
that's had an easy schedule why do other
teams lose against Columbus and buffalo
and Montreal's almost got a 500 record
they've won 20 games uh ottawa's won 18
games San Jose now has 13 wins they had
a three- game winning streak so if if
it's easy to do this then a 16 game
winning streak would be common it's not
so their next game they can tie the 17
game winning streak set by the
Pittsburgh Penguins and as much as
people might be tired of hearing about
it and I've seen it and I get it the
reality is they're playing the best
hockey in the National Hockey League
right now uh it's not just McDavid it's
not just dry cidal that's been the
remarkable part is that throughout this
16 game winning streak it's been
different Heroes and steuart Skinner is
playing absolutely out of his mind right
now uh and also on the blue line Bard's
playing well eek holm's been everything
they could have asked for and more and
Darnell nurse is playing pretty well so
the Oilers I think are full full value
for first on the board and yes it took a
long time for me to get them there but
there they are so let me know your
thoughts in the comment section below as
always don't forget to hit like And
subscribe in the event that you have not
done so already uh thank you guys so
much for watching and uh hopefully I
enjoy my my week of of not um being in
this room and and and being here so uh

this week to do much of anything else so
kind of tired tonight but I'm going to
be up again tomorrow early cuz I've got

going to do that are going to post while
we're on holiday it's not just just 32
power ranking videos I promise thank you

grateful for every single subscriber to
this Channel and for everything that

watch the Power Rankings thanks um as
long as you watch the Power Rankings it
works and just as like an FYI from a
YouTuber any and all interactions with a
video tells the algorithm that a you
like it and B it tells the the the
basically the server that hey this video
is popular so it doesn't matter whether
it's a positive or negative experience
people have with it uh it just it it
just it it boosts the video so just
throwing that out there thank you guys
so much for all your support and for
people down in California who are going
to come out and play floor play floor
hockey it's it's it's outdoor it's
street hockey uh outdoor street hockey
