hey guys so it has been quite a while
since my last video but I do have
something really exciting to share with
you today we finally released the Recon
Y6 this is now available on recon fv.com
and hglrc
docomo so today I want to talk in detail
about the frame design here and all the
details that went into it and then the
most important question I guess is um
what is ai6 good for how does it perform
how does it fly what are the pros and
cons to going for a Y6 versus just a
good old quadcopter so let's get right
into the details and what's under the
hood of this setup here now first maybe
a few words about the BNF and the
different versions so what I'm holding
in my hands here is the cadx Moonlight
version here as you can see there's the
the cadx walks snail compatible unit
inside quite similar to the DJI O3
actually in shape and size um it will
also come in a DJI O3 version the BNF
which is really just slightly more
expensive and then there will be a much
cheaper analog version as usual it will
only come in a 6S setup so with 202 2004
1800 KV Motors there will not be a 4S
version simply because this setup does
perform much much better on 6s and 4S
versions have been decreasing in
popularity recently anyway so this will
be available basically in three
different VTX versions two different
receiver versions so Crossfire and
express lrs so that will be the versions
you will be able to get okay so let's
zoom in a little bit on the components
that are on here so Motors as you see
these are quite familiar probably if you
know the Recon 5 so 204 Motors 1800 KV
this is a well tested and proven motor
prop compin ation really efficient but
also pretty powerful makes the whole
thing much lighter than using something
like 227s or
2306 so it is basically the choice to go
if you want to make a 5 in setup long
range capable while still having enough
power to Freestyle a little bit here and
there only difference is compared to the
Recon 5 obviously we do have six of
these motors and props so our prop area
is increased by 50% and we do have quite
a lot of carrying Capac capacity on such
a Y6 setup now we do have a little GPS
here because of course it's uh Recon we
want the thing to be fully long range
capable so we have a latest generation
M100 mini GPS as you can see this is
much smaller than the old um BN 1880s
and BN 220s that we had on our quads but
does perform very well so really tiny
tiny GPS here always good to have and
then basically the the Highlight on the
squad is is the sixin one flight
controller so this is something that as
far as I know did not exist before and
really makes building ay6 much more
convenient and um the whole inside of
the Quad much cleaner so we do have six
esc's on here an F7 flight controller
and a mpu 6000 gyro the esc's are rated
40 amps 45 amp Peak so plenty of of uh
spare room here regarding the amp rating
these motors also run without any issues
on a 20 amp rated ESC so this is really
safe and um the electronics here will
not be struggling with uh the the power
demands of the motors xt60 connector
because of course we do have six of
these motors it's going to draw
considerable amps so we do have a NXT 60
not n XT 30 on here um dual antennas on
the 03 version and and the CX Moonlight
version and that's basically it um you
have the the little Crossfire antenna
here so this is the the overall setup
now let's look at the frame design in a
bit more detail so on these Y6 setups
here there's two things you really need
to keep in mind when you're designing
the the frame first is to make the whole
thing actually rigid and robust enough
because you do attach two Motors to each
arm so you really need to be careful not
to run into any issues with stability
and vibration or resonances so these are
5 mm arms 10 mm wide and 2 mm plates
here top and bottom really nice and
robust M free Hardware so as you can see
the arms are here mounted in three
different
places front and back arms are mounted
by these screws here so just really make
sure that nothing here is moving or
jiggling or vibrating the whole thing is
really robust and then basically the
other concern you have which really
really was a challenge when designing
this is that on these Y6 setup there's
uh spinning blades pretty much
everywhere so you really need to be
careful that nothing does get in the way
of the props this is why I use a lot of
TPU on this Frame design here to really
integrate everything nicely the go Pro
Mount is integrated here anten Mounds so
this is really more of a compact uh
design really making sure that nothing
gets in the way of the props especially
the xt60 here as you can see it's also
attached because it
does have to be quite close to a
spinning blade also so everything needs
to be really well fought out and well uh
well mounted on these types of quads now
I chose to basically put the GoPro
between the arms here because the GoPro
doesn't move it's mounted here so you
don't run into any issues of the blades
hitting the GoPro um which is not the
case with the battery so that's why the
battery is on the bottom here because
it's below the prop so if the battery
moves around there's no danger of the
battery getting into the props so that's
why it's bottom mounted it's balanced
out by the GoPro mounted on top here
right between um these motors so that
also makes sure that you do not have any
props in view of the GoPro it's really
mounted uh in the center between the the
motors and props so no props in view
that's uh that's a bit the the overall
concern here making sure nothing gets to
the props and everything is really nice
and solid on such a
Y6 so that's it that's the the BNF setup
and the frame design everything here
does sound a bit more simple than it
actually was so this design went through
a lot a lot of iterations much more than
usual because again there's there so so
many details to think about so many
little things that could go wrong that
could go in the props um that aren't
really easy to integrate here in in such
a setup one example maybe for you to see
here is the USBC which is here in front
on a separate little board because it's
really not easy to actually have a USBC
here on the board and way it is
accessible because you do have to have
all of these um motor output solar pads
on there so there's no space to mount a
USB in the rear it's not accessible in
the front as well no way to access it
so the best way to to actually do it was
to have a special little board here so
it's nicely accessible from the front so
all these little details really had to
be worked out and this is why this thing
has been in development for uh one and a
half years basically until the design
was really mature enough um that we
thought it was really ready to be
released and uh enjoyed by by all
customers in the fpv
community uh but maybe not now let's
talk about um the really obvious
question of why making a Y6 what's
what's the advantage of making a Y6 and
basically there's there's three reasons
why you would use a Y6 so may maybe four
one could be that you want some
something that looks different and feels
different than a quad and yes you can go
for a Y6 just because it's it's
different but practically speaking
there's there's three things that a Y6
is actually quite good at doing um
number one is carrying capacity so it's
it's not much bigger than a 5 in but it
does have six props so 50% more prop
area so it can carry weight quite well
if you put a fullsize GoPro on there you
barely notice any difference um
especially since the GoPro sort of
balances out the butom mounted battery
is really good at carrying that weight
and second it's really stable in the air
that's the biggest Advantage um of a
quad with actually six propellers uh
because hexacopters behave similarly
they are very locked in the air very
stable um you might even say they feel
pretty stiff but if you're trying to do
cinematic shot shots and not have your
stick inputs go into the video feed and
really having something look very smooth
and controlled and flying like like on
Rails then a Y6 is really perfect and
finally third thing that a Y6 is pretty
good at is cruising speed so this is not
a very big quad um but it's actually
rather heavy and Powerful because it
does have six Motors so that's because
that's why it does have a pretty high
cruising speed and with cruising speed I
mean the speed you can maintain for for
a pretty long time without overd
draining your battery or without having
to fly um ridiculous angles so the
combination of these three things being
able to carry a full-sized action camera
very well moving really fast and doesn't
doing so very smoothly and in a very
controlled fashion makes this absolutely
perfect if you want to take some really
cinematic shots of a landscape of of
whatever it is from Chas chasing a car
um this is really really a good platform
to do
so but now I would say enough of the
talking uh let's go outside and let's
get this thing in the air it's let's
actually show you how it
performs okay so time to see how the Y6
performs in the air I'm going to use
this setup here to demonstrate it to you
there's a fullsize GoPro on there with
an ND filter we do have a 6 s300 Mah
hours battery that's a pretty heavy quad
but that's basically what this is
intended to do um it's a KX Moonlight
version so I do have my CeX set up here
this is a bit cumbersome but that's how
I think it's most comfortable there's a
big lithium iron battery in the rear
here so do not have to worry about
battery capacity it's pluged through a
long HDMI into my Orca so I do not have
to strap the receivers to my goggles
which I thought was too cumbersome and I
also do not have to worry about how my
head is orientated towards the quads
thing is not moving here I can Orient
this perfectly to where I'm flying so I
think this should work out quite well um
we have plenty of space here to take a
few cinematic shots so let's see how
this thing moves through the
air so what you're seeing immediately is
that this platform is gaining quite a
lot of speed and momentum in immediately
and cruises very nicely at a really
steady altitude over this field so it
immediately feels yeah like you could
pretty much take your hands off the
sticks and just point the thing in a
certain direction and just have it fly
there smoothly and it is also very easy
to manage your sticks to get some smooth
Transitions and smooth turns this is
really the strength of such a Y6
platform getting some cinematic shots is
very very easy now of course what you're
seeing here is GoPro footage and there's
an ND filter on there and the hypers
smooth stabilization is on but that is
basically all that has been done to this
footage it was just stick a GoPro on the
quad and go there's no post processing
or um real steady go stabilization done
after the
fact by the way this was the first time
that I used the cadex walk snail system
with the separate receiver that I
plugged into my goggles as it just
showed you I have to say overall I think
it's it's fine and I'm not really
impressed it's not as good as the DJI
system when it comes to range image
quality and penetration power and
especially how stable the image
transmission is but it's it's actually
really fine I would say and it's one
more option so it's it's not a bad thing
to have especially since there are more
receiver options and they're in general
more convenient to place in especially
smaller quad so it's a good thing to
have but honestly um this first flight
session that I did with the walks wasn't
super impressive to me but also not bad
so if you want to if you don't want to
go for DJI I think it's it's a good
option that gives you in any case much
much better image quality compared to
analog but this also wasn't an in-depth
review that I did of the system which
was just some First Impressions that I
had so you're also going to notice that
in this flight session here I didn't fly
very far out simply because I didn't
trust the cadex system yet in terms of
range and transmission stability and I
didn't have GPS reception because the
sky was extremely clouded so I wouldn't
have any return to home function but
could you in principle long range this
Y6 yes you absolutely can it does have a
really decent flight time on a 1300 Mah
hour 6s which is what I'm using here in
this flight footage you will get
anything from 5 to 10 minutes really
depends on how you're managing your
throttle in that case and this is I
would say more than enough to do some
mid to light long range flying you can
also use this quad with a sixs lithium
iron pack which I think is is not what
most of the time you're going to do
because this is not meant to be used for
really heavy Mountain diving and extreme
long range missions this is more of a
cinematic mid-range mid to long range
platform which you're using for some
nice cinematic footage so there usually
is no reason to fly very far out when
you're doing that but for the intended
purpose flight time really is going to
be more than enough because this is
quite an efficient uh powertrain you
have on this
Y6 now another question question that is
quite obvious is Can You Freestyle this
Y6 and obviously yes you can it is a 6S
and it is really quite powerful so I
just purposely did some freestyle
footage here with the fulls siiz GoPro
on with a heavy 1300 mli pack and you
can see that it's still able to to to
flip and turn in an quite agile way now
I have to say it doesn't really feel
very nice flying in freestyle because
because you always have a pretty heavy
imbalance around the pitch axis on the
Y6 because there's just two Motors in
the rear for in the front so the whole
thing around its pitch AIS is inherently
a bit imbalanced and having a lot of
weight a big pack and a GoPro on there
makes the the pitch axis feel a bit
weird when you're flipping it around it
but it does feel completely fine around
the y axis and the um roll axis so you
can basically freestyle this without any
issues but you're going to notice that
it's not made for heavy freestyle flying
for that you're much better off with a 5
in freestyle quad with some 227 Motors
or 236 Motors but you're not going to
get the fly times on such a platform any
in any case and it's going to be more
difficult to get those cinematic shot
because the frt is much more difficult
to manage and the whole thing is much
more reactive and doesn't have this
locked and stable feeling that a Y6 will
have okay so I hope I mentioned
everything that was of importance if you
have any more questions please leave a
comment Down Below in the on the video
and I'm going to answer it and um yeah
check out the links in the description
this where you can get this quad here
there's also going to be some
independent reviews of our reviewers
coming up soon so look out for those and
thanks for watching guys
