How to maintain a swimming pond
Summary
TLDRIn the video, Michael Wheat, owner of Ponds by Michel Whe, addresses common questions regarding the maintenance of swimming ponds. He emphasizes the importance of phosphate management and regular water testing, as their systems are designed to reduce phosphate levels over time. Maintenance tasks include cleaning equipment such as pumps and filters, replacing UVs annually or biennially, and managing blanket weed, which is particularly important in the first few years. Wheat assures viewers that, beyond the initial setup, the ponds require minimal daily or weekly upkeep. He mentions that clients often opt for a maintenance package for the first one to two years, after which they can independently manage their ponds. The design philosophy behind the ponds is to minimize maintenance over time, a contrast to the increasing maintenance needs of other pond systems. Wheat invites viewers to engage with the company and offers his email for feedback on how to improve their service.
Takeaways
- 🧪 Phosphate Management: Regular water testing is crucial to keep phosphate levels low, which is a key aspect of maintaining a healthy swimming pond.
- 💧 Equipment Maintenance: Keeping equipment clean and functional is vital; this includes annual pump checks, biannual filter cleanings, and periodic sponge and UV light replacements.
- 🌿 Blanket Weed Control: Initially, there may be a need to manage blanket weed, which helps in reducing phosphates. Over time, this issue should diminish as the pond ecosystem stabilizes.
- 🏊♂️ Enjoyment Over Maintenance: The swimming pond is designed for enjoyment with minimal daily or weekly maintenance required, allowing users to simply swim and enjoy.
- 🌱 Plant Care: Occasional trimming of plants once a year is necessary to maintain the pond's aesthetics and health.
- 🚫 Reduced Silt: The pond's filter system effectively manages silt, reducing the need for constant cleaning.
- 📉 Decreasing Maintenance: The design philosophy behind the swimming pond is to decrease maintenance over time, not increase it.
- 📦 Maintenance Packages: Offering maintenance packages for the first one to two years can help clients acclimate to the pond's upkeep before self-managing.
- 📈 Long-term Benefits: As the pond matures, the need for maintenance is expected to decrease, with plants and the ecosystem contributing to a self-sustaining environment.
- 💌 Customer Feedback: The company encourages feedback and is open to suggestions for improvement to enhance their service and product offerings.
- 📈 Market Differentiation: The company aims to differentiate itself by reducing maintenance requirements over time, which is a contrast to other pond building approaches where maintenance tends to increase.

I'm Michael weat the owner of ponds by
Michel whe and sometimes we get asked
how much maintenance is there to do in a
swimming Pond or more importantly one of
our swimming ponds so let me go through
the list of Maintenance you would
probably need to do with one of our swim
pond projects one of the things is we do
a lot of work on phosphates watch my
videos on phosphates on blanket weed
okay so we do a lot of work on that so
we people to test the water and what
happens is because of our system we're
generally bringing that phosphate down
year after year okay so it's important
to test that's one key thing the second
thing is to obviously keep on top of the
maintenance of the equipment keeping the
equipment clean so that things like once
a year you might need to take the pump
out the filters will need cleaning twice
a year the sponges will need pushing out
and cleaning uh UVS need changing once a
year okay on some of our um some of our
UVS they W actually changing once a
every two years well
likee we need to make sure the air pumps
are still
working and then maintenance wise kind
of it really I mean you certainly when
we first install the projects be a bit
blanket weed so it's about getting that
blanket weed out getting it away from
the pond so that we can help that just
helps remove the phosphates that's
generally a job that people would do the
first couple of years it might get a bit
on the third year but generally it
should start to come down the longer
that you have it
the plants will need triming about once
a year but that's it it doesn't need
daily maintenance it doesn't need weekly
maintenance you know actually the filter
does a great job of removing silt so
that kind of looks after that side of it
uh the phosphate bring the levels down
will'll get rid of the blanket weeds
that kind of covers that side of it so
ultimately all you can do is just get in
there and swim and enjoy it um there
will be some maintenance up front and a
lot of our clients take out a silver
package or gold package of maintenance
for the first year and two years but
after that I generally found they can
look after them and ultimately when I
designed this like kind of
designed you know the perfect widget if
you like or the perfect wheel I you know
when I came up with the perfect way of
delivering this it was to make sure the
maintenance went less and less not more
and more so what I was looking at with
the marketplace and how people were
building them is in maintenance just
kept increasing more and more and my way
of doing it was to reduce that
completely

so thank you for watching one of our
videos um please like And subscribe
that's what the kids say don't they um
obviously for us to company on let as
many people know as possible that are
interested in swimm ponds what we do and
how we do it I think we have a fabulous
way of delivering our projects and I
want more and more people to see it so
hopefully I've been in hopefully you've
enjoyed it if not email me at mwm we.
co.uk and tell me tell me what I can do
to improve because I'm always here to
improve and uh I look forward to hearing
from people thank you
