Q & A

    -Mazie Cousins

option for this

why do some color combinations work so

play00:19

well how much color is too much

play00:22

and how can you control color in your

play00:23

shot when you can't control the scene

play00:25

you're shooting

play00:26

good or bad use of color is one of the

play00:28

biggest factors in why some photographic

play00:30

work looks amateurish and some look

play00:31

stunning

play00:32

learning how to use control and edit

play00:34

colour is a vital part of learning

play00:36

colour photography

play00:37

a lot of that is down to what you choose

play00:38

to put in the frame but there's also a

play00:40

large influence from how those colours

play00:42

are tweaked in post-production

play00:43

so i'll take you through eight quick

play00:45

tips tricks techniques and ideas for

play00:47

shooting and editing that will hopefully

play00:48

help you create photographs that use

play00:50

color well

play00:52

[Music]

play00:56

one make color a major subject in your

play00:59

photo

play01:00

before we edit and ideally before we

play01:02

shoot we need to decide

play01:04

why we're using color and how we want to

play01:06

use it

play01:07

color can be used to great effect to

play01:09

emphasize the subject of your photo

play01:12

take a look at these images by mazie

play01:14

cousins cousins is a very interesting

play01:16

photographer and one you really should

play01:18

be following on instagram

play01:19

she uses traditionally feminine color

play01:21

palettes being a saturated and

play01:23

saccharine way and these are juxtaposed

play01:25

with things society associates with

play01:27

disgust

play01:28

snails insects and rotting food but also

play01:31

with close-ups of the female body

play01:33

showing hair and stretch marks and

play01:35

blemishes on skin

play01:36

with project titles like what girls are

play01:38

made of her work has been described as

play01:40

feminist

play01:42

cousins is using colour as a key element

play01:44

to communicate her concept

play01:46

by using colour in the way that she does

play01:48

she's tapping into our subconscious

play01:50

understanding of the language of colour

play01:52

and subverting our expectations of it

play01:54

this photography would not work in black

play01:56

and white

play01:58

as well as using colour to convey a

play01:59

message it can also be used to construct

play02:01

a style

play02:03

artist louis porter uses colour to

play02:05

create a distinctive style

play02:06

his usage is so vibrant and bright that

play02:08

his images take on an almost

play02:10

surreal quality mundane subjects glow

play02:13

with a tapestry of artificial hues

play02:15

as a result his work becomes easily

play02:18

recognizable

play02:20

in addition to emphasizing a subject

play02:22

color can become the subject of your

play02:24

photo

play02:25

this shot by steve mccurry is as much

play02:27

about color

play02:28

as it is about the people in it ian

play02:31

berry's image of this recently married

play02:33

couple

play02:33

is largely about the pink of the

play02:35

cadillac against the green foliage

play02:39

alessio ferrari's photo of captain

play02:41

beanie is

play02:42

about the color orange if we were to

play02:44

turn any of these images black and white

play02:46

they wouldn't work two be abstract

play02:51

taking colour is the subject a step

play02:53

further there's no need to be figurative

play02:55

at all

play02:56

your photography can become completely

play02:58

abstract

play02:59

photographer ola konamen makes abstract

play03:02

work of architecture that often employs

play03:04

strong use of colour

play03:06

he inverts flips and recolours his shots

play03:09

until he achieves the vision that he was

play03:10

looking for

play03:12

try going out with a view to making

play03:14

abstract colour work with your camera

play03:16

look for light look for reflections

play03:18

color casts shapes

play03:20

take a mental step back from what you

play03:21

see and experiment with

play03:23

not viewing the things around you as

play03:25

people or buildings or objects with a

play03:27

function

play03:28

but instead analyzing a scene in terms

play03:30

of shapes and areas of color

play03:33

think about what you could do in post to

play03:34

bring out particular colors

play03:36

concentrate purely on the aesthetic

play03:38

value of the frame

play03:39

rather than representing something that

play03:42

we recognize

play03:45

three be surreal

play03:48

whether you're using infrared film or

play03:50

digital editing software

play03:52

we have the power to manipulate

play03:54

different colors in our shots

play03:56

normally we just tweak the hues and

play03:58

tones slightly to achieve

play04:00

the image that we want but we can also

play04:03

take color

play04:04

very far away from its origin we can

play04:06

take it far away from what we expect to

play04:08

see we can create very surreal and

play04:10

striking work that

play04:11

plays on our expectations of the scene

play04:15

photographer richard moss takes some

play04:16

really stunning imagery of conflict

play04:18

using kodak aerochrome film

play04:20

which picks up infrared light and turns

play04:22

the greens of foliage into reds and

play04:25

pinks and purples

play04:26

the results are a series of very surreal

play04:29

landscapes soldiers wielding large guns

play04:32

surrounded by this sea of

play04:34

unexpectedly vibrant colour

play04:37

you can also manipulate colour by

play04:39

editing your images in digital software

play04:41

i made some aerochrome style presets for

play04:43

lightroom and photoshop i'll leave a

play04:45

link to them in the video description

play04:46

i'll show you later on in this video

play04:48

some techniques that you can use to

play04:49

manipulate color in post yourself

play04:54

photographer magik jasik likes to create

play04:57

surreal colorscapes in camera he shoots

play05:00

through prisms and gels that he places

play05:02

in front of the lens in his project the

play05:03

world with us

play05:05

this creates a series of surreal and

play05:07

fragmented landscapes

play05:11

maybe experiment with holding things

play05:13

over your lens to see

play05:14

what color effects you could create try

play05:17

shooting through gels

play05:19

even through things you might find lying

play05:20

around like some colored cellophane

play05:22

packaging or

play05:24

a translucent plastic folder

play05:26

[Music]

play05:28

coloured smoke grenades can be fun to

play05:30

experiment with too but they're a little

play05:32

overused so do

play05:33

try to do something interesting with

play05:35

them like jasic has done here

play05:37

think about how you could use them to

play05:39

create an unexpected image

play05:41

don't just have someone hold it and wave

play05:43

it around

play05:43

[Music]

play05:45

four be selective a large part

play05:48

of what makes color work in your photos

play05:51

it's not so much the colors that you use

play05:54

as the colors that you leave out

play05:57

you might have heard about color theory

play05:58

but this can maybe seem a little bit

play06:00

intimidating

play06:01

and confusing as it's a really massive

play06:04

subject

play06:06

[Music]

play06:07

this is the colour wheel we have our

play06:09

primaries

play06:10

our secondaries and our tertiaries

play06:14

colour theory is about how colours work

play06:16

together

play06:17

we have our list of colour harmonies

play06:19

monochromatic

play06:20

analogous complementary split

play06:22

complementary triadic tetradic double

play06:24

split complementary square compound

play06:26

etc you can see why this gets a little

play06:29

bit intimidating

play06:30

while it may seem too complex in a way

play06:33

it's also

play06:34

an oversimplified way of looking at

play06:37

color

play06:37

it deals only with hue and it doesn't

play06:39

account for other factors like

play06:40

saturation or

play06:42

brightness or how much color is actually

play06:44

in the frame

play06:46

my advice here would be not to worry too

play06:49

much about all the variations

play06:51

and start with learning the two most

play06:54

common color harmonies

play06:56

which is analogous and complementary

play06:59

once you start seeing where and how

play07:01

these are used

play07:02

you'll begin to notice photos that don't

play07:04

use these rules and that's probably the

play07:06

best time to

play07:07

do further reading and learn a bit more

play07:09

but just take it one step at a time

play07:11

and you'll start to absorb these and

play07:13

ultimately they'll just become intuitive

play07:16

analogous colours are groups of colours

play07:18

that sit next to each other on the

play07:20

colour wheel

play07:20

analogous harmonies tend to give a calm

play07:22

and soft feel to your images when used

play07:25

in more natural tones

play07:26

they can also make an image more about

play07:28

one particular color when they're used

play07:30

in more saturated combinations

play07:32

they're also used a lot in films to

play07:33

create a feeling different colors can

play07:35

have different associations for us

play07:37

depending on the context they're used

play07:39

for example analogous sets of blues and

play07:41

greens can feel

play07:42

natural and fresh or they can feel cold

play07:44

and sad

play07:45

or even monotonous and boring until the

play07:49

complementary color of red is brought in

play07:51

to stand out from all that green

play07:53

one instance of the complementary colour

play07:54

in a frame of analogous or monochromatic

play07:56

colours will stand out

play07:58

and catch your eye were you listening to

play07:59

me neo

play08:01

or were you looking at the woman in the

play08:02

red dress

play08:04

these complementary harmonies use colour

play08:06

from opposite sides of the colour wheel

play08:08

these sit well together and they make an

play08:10

image feel balanced and this is by far

play08:12

the most common way people use color in

play08:14

photography and in film

play08:16

this is the reason for many popular

play08:18

color combinations

play08:19

including the classic cinematic orange

play08:21

and teal look that you see everywhere

play08:22

more on that later

play08:24

and the reds and greens of film like

play08:26

emily

play08:28

some of the most famous and revered

play08:29

color photos throughout history

play08:31

use this color harmony to great effect

play08:34

it's one of the reasons that

play08:35

mccurry's afghan girl portrait works so

play08:37

well

play08:38

once you start looking for this

play08:40

technique you'll start to see

play08:41

complementary color harmonies used

play08:43

absolutely everywhere

play08:45

and you'll also start to find that you

play08:46

have a more clear direction when looking

play08:48

to compose your own shots

play08:50

5. use colored lighting coloured

play08:54

lighting can work to great effect in

play08:55

your images

play08:56

you can buy coloured gels for your flash

play08:58

guns very cheaply online

play09:00

you can also just use other things i

play09:02

shot these just using two desk lamps

play09:05

with a couple of colour changing smart

play09:06

bulbs that i can control from an app on

play09:08

my phone

play09:09

you can also look for sources of colored

play09:11

light while you're out and about

play09:12

maybe things like neon signs in shop

play09:14

windows or

play09:15

glowing adverts on bus stops there's

play09:18

plenty of stuff you can find around your

play09:19

house too

play09:20

maybe use your tv or your computer

play09:23

screen to give off a colored light

play09:25

just fill the screen with that color and

play09:26

then you have an effective light

play09:29

play around because you'd be surprised

play09:31

at how good the results can look

play09:33

number six understand that our

play09:36

perception of color

play09:38

is relative like many things in life

play09:42

our brains understand color largely in

play09:44

relation to the other colors around

play09:46

it make sure to take this into account

play09:48

when editing colors because we can often

play09:50

push colors further than we expect

play09:52

and still perceive them as looking

play09:54

correct

play09:55

for example these are what we may call

play09:58

good skin tones

play09:59

and there are formulas out there to

play10:00

achieve them i've referenced them myself

play10:02

before on my channel

play10:04

so when we look at these to add in a

play10:06

bright orange like this would seem

play10:07

completely out of place it would be a

play10:09

bad skin tone

play10:10

but this is the color of the skin tone

play10:12

used in the film amelie

play10:14

and when we see it in context it looks

play10:16

perfectly fine because of the way the

play10:17

film is graded

play10:19

to use a correct skin tone here would

play10:21

look weird

play10:24

number seven know your software

play10:27

whether you shoot digital or you shoot

play10:29

film it's important to know how to

play10:31

achieve the effect you're looking for

play10:33

in your editing software it's generally

play10:35

a better idea to

play10:37

have a vision in mind for your image

play10:38

rather than to just play around until

play10:40

you hit on something you like

play10:43

there's so much to go through in editing

play10:44

software that i'm just gonna give you an

play10:47

overview just a really top level

play10:49

sort of rundown in lightroom but

play10:51

hopefully you'll be able to translate

play10:52

what i'm saying

play10:54

to whichever program you use to edit

play10:56

okay so i'm in lightroom now and i'm

play10:58

just gonna give you a very brief

play10:59

overview of the different ways to edit

play11:01

color in your images

play11:03

now i've got an image here from a canon

play11:05

eos r i can see

play11:06

straight away actually that these colors

play11:08

don't look right and i know the reason

play11:09

for that so this is another little tip

play11:12

here the reason for this is because

play11:15

lightroom is set to adobe default

play11:20

if you go into your preferences in your

play11:21

presets tab change that to camera

play11:23

settings

play11:24

and then it will apply the profile from

play11:26

your camera rather than adobe's default

play11:28

so if i change that and then reset

play11:30

this then we get the proper colors

play11:32

that's the colors that are meant to come

play11:34

out of the canon

play11:35

little tip there so first off we start

play11:38

at the top and we got our white balance

play11:39

that's very simple just makes it cooler

play11:42

or warmer and you've got your tint to

play11:44

just tweak that

play11:46

but try and think beyond just getting a

play11:47

correct white balance try and think

play11:49

what you want your image to say do you

play11:51

want it to feel really warm do you want

play11:52

it to feel

play11:53

cold and don't be afraid to really push

play11:55

the white balance you can really change

play11:57

how an image looks

play11:59

you can make this shot feel like it was

play12:03

a night shot or you could push it into

play12:06

the

play12:06

kind of afternoon sun do you want it to

play12:09

feel clinical do you want it to

play12:11

feel comforting do you want to feel too

play12:14

hot there's a lot of things you can do

play12:15

with white balance if you

play12:17

push it so play around with that a

play12:18

little bit so next down here we've got

play12:20

our vibrance and saturation

play12:22

saturation takes all the colors

play12:25

and adds saturation to them what

play12:28

vibrance does

play12:29

it adds saturation and takes it away but

play12:31

it adds

play12:32

more saturation to the less saturated

play12:34

colors so it kind of brings them all

play12:37

together a little bit and the more

play12:38

saturated colors it doesn't push up

play12:41

so you get a more natural look so if i

play12:42

push my saturation up

play12:45

that looks quite weird but if i was to

play12:47

push my vibrance up

play12:49

doesn't look quite so weird so the next

play12:52

one down is your tone curve

play12:53

and you can get a lot of control out of

play12:55

your tone curve you've got

play12:57

your basic tone curve here but you've

play12:59

also got your red

play13:00

green and blue and

play13:03

if you look here you can see you've got

play13:06

red

play13:06

and a sort of cyan there

play13:10

and you've got a green and a magenta and

play13:13

a blue and a yellow

play13:15

so if i want to warm up the white

play13:17

balance another way i could do that

play13:19

would be i could push

play13:20

this red up but i need to get rid of

play13:21

some of that magenta so i'd go to the

play13:23

green

play13:24

and i'd pull that up to there a little

play13:27

bit

play13:28

and i can push that down there that's

play13:31

very very warm white balance

play13:33

so the tone curve is probably the best

play13:35

way to grade your image you can get a

play13:36

lot of control out of it more control

play13:38

than

play13:39

anything else in pretty much any program

play13:43

it's the most powerful tool it's quite

play13:46

tricky to use but you just need

play13:47

practice and if you're in lightroom you

play13:50

can hold alt

play13:52

or option and it will slow down your

play13:54

movement so you can make more

play13:56

gradual incremental shifts so the next

play13:59

one down

play14:00

the hsl the hue saturation and luminance

play14:03

this deals with the perceived color of

play14:06

the image and i'll explain what i mean

play14:08

by that in a minute

play14:09

because we also have the calibration

play14:11

which deals with the

play14:12

actual color so it does the same thing i

play14:14

will come back to this because we've got

play14:16

one more thing

play14:17

the color grading now

play14:20

i would generally stay away from color

play14:22

grading

play14:23

if you do use it use it very minimally

play14:25

because it puts a whole

play14:27

wash just over the whole image and it's

play14:30

not very selective

play14:32

and it can start to look very weird very

play14:34

fast

play14:35

but it can be used a good effect if you

play14:37

use it right

play14:39

so now let me try to explain the

play14:41

difference between

play14:42

the hsl panel the hue saturation and

play14:45

luminance

play14:47

and the calibration

play14:51

so they basically do the same thing but

play14:54

hsl deals with the perceived colors

play14:58

and calibration deals with the actual

play15:01

colors

play15:02

so i'll explain what i mean by that

play15:04

using the color wheel

play15:05

perceived colors what we see when we

play15:08

look at the screen

play15:09

so this color here we see red

play15:12

so if i were to change the luminance of

play15:15

the red slider

play15:17

the colors with red in change their

play15:20

luminance

play15:21

same with blue if i were to change the

play15:23

hue value of the blue

play15:26

the colors with blue in change

play15:29

but these aren't actually just the

play15:32

colors with blue in if i were to hover

play15:34

over the blue

play15:35

what we can see up here on the screen

play15:38

we've got 40 red in there

play15:41

and 18 green as well as 93 percent

play15:45

blue and on red we have 75

play15:48

red but we've also got 34 green 13 blue

play15:52

because every pixel in your image is

play15:55

made up

play15:56

of a level of red a level of green and a

play15:59

level of blue

play16:00

so what the hsl sliders do is they

play16:03

affect

play16:03

the outcome of the red and blue and

play16:07

green channels

play16:08

mixed together so what we perceive as

play16:11

red what we perceive as blue

play16:13

whereas the calibration sliders affect

play16:15

the actual breakdown of each color

play16:18

they just affect the red channel or the

play16:20

green channel or the blue

play16:22

channel this is one of the reasons why i

play16:24

like lightroom as opposed to

play16:25

capture one because lightroom has this

play16:28

calibration capture one doesn't

play16:30

photoshop has it as well in its camera

play16:32

raw feature

play16:34

um i'm not aware of any other editing

play16:37

programs that do have this

play16:39

i'm sure there are some around if you

play16:41

know any please let me know in the

play16:42

comments and

play16:44

so other people can see which ones have

play16:46

them

play16:47

but if i were to change the hue of the

play16:49

red or the saturation of the red

play16:51

with these you'll see that every single

play16:54

color

play16:55

changes because every single color has

play16:57

red in it same with the green

play16:59

every single color has green in it and

play17:01

the blue

play17:02

but the interesting thing about the

play17:04

calibration palette is when you pull the

play17:06

hue sliders

play17:08

to one side or the other you start to

play17:11

get breakdowns of color

play17:12

like here we have teal and orange or

play17:16

green and purple we are creating

play17:20

complementary color palettes and this

play17:22

can be used

play17:23

great effect to grade your images so

play17:26

if i take this for example and i just go

play17:29

to this image here and i just click the

play17:31

previous button

play17:33

it's cropped it there but if you ignore

play17:35

the crop

play17:36

if you look at what the calibration's

play17:38

done

play17:40

it's giving you a bit of a teal and

play17:41

orange look

play17:43

[Music]

play17:44

so let me take you through a couple of

play17:46

quick edits just to show you why this is

play17:47

good

play17:48

so this is an image of some flowers i

play17:50

took a wedding

play17:52

it was all the jars together before they

play17:54

went out onto the table so i just took a

play17:56

cropped shot filled the frame with it

play17:58

now it's very colorful but there are so

play17:59

many different colors in here

play18:01

you've got this green and this pink and

play18:03

this

play18:04

purple and the different purple then a

play18:06

different purple again

play18:07

and yellow and orange and red and

play18:11

none of the colors sit harmoniously

play18:13

together

play18:14

so if we go into the calibration and i

play18:16

start messing around with these

play18:18

i start taking out colors

play18:22

so what i'm doing here

play18:26

if you can see see the effects of this

play18:28

now i don't need to pull them completely

play18:30

to the sides

play18:32

but if i if you look at what was there

play18:34

before and how this is going now

play18:37

what's happening is where

play18:40

there are different oranges and greens

play18:42

and yellows it's now putting them all

play18:44

into a similar kind of

play18:46

hue and so if i were to bump the

play18:48

vibrance up a little bit of that

play18:50

and pull the contrast up maybe

play18:54

dehaze it slightly we've got quite an

play18:56

interesting looking image

play18:58

it has a much stronger color theme to it

play19:01

okay this is another shot from the same

play19:02

wedding and say we wanted to make this

play19:04

look

play19:04

cinematic because that's uh something

play19:07

you hear a lot of people go oh that

play19:08

looks really cinematic

play19:09

so what we do to make this look

play19:10

cinematic so we'll take

play19:13

a crop first and just maybe crop them

play19:16

into the middle third of the frame

play19:18

when you have a more panoramic shot it

play19:21

looks more cinematic to start with

play19:23

but the main thing is the color we don't

play19:25

have too much color going on here

play19:26

but we can give it that orange and teal

play19:28

look by taking the blue primary

play19:31

pulling it to the left the green primary

play19:33

can bring back some orange

play19:35

in there and we're getting very strong

play19:38

kind of

play19:39

orange and teal look now that's where we

play19:42

were

play19:43

there there we go so i'm going to pull

play19:46

the warmth up a little bit

play19:48

but i want to bring back some of that

play19:49

teal in the sky

play19:51

and what i'm going to do is use the hsl

play19:53

panel now so i'm going to take my

play19:56

targeted adjustment tool which is rather

play19:59

than going on

play20:00

the individual color sliders you can

play20:02

click an area of the image and drag it

play20:04

up and down

play20:05

to change the luminance so i'm going to

play20:07

pull the luminance down a little bit

play20:09

i'm really overdoing this to um i

play20:12

wouldn't normally grade an image like

play20:13

this but i'm

play20:14

just for purposes of showing you pull

play20:17

the saturation up

play20:18

and maybe i just might put a little bit

play20:20

more green in that

play20:21

so i think the overall saturation of the

play20:24

image

play20:24

needs to come down a little bit and i

play20:27

need to pull the blacks down a little

play20:29

bit

play20:29

uh cinema tends to have quite deep

play20:32

blacks

play20:33

in a way that photography tends not to

play20:36

do

play20:36

photography tends to have more detail in

play20:38

the shot and cinema because it's moving

play20:41

you can get away with losing more

play20:42

information so that's another

play20:44

another cinematic look so there we go it

play20:47

looks a lot more cinematic now and this

play20:49

is mainly due to the calibration

play20:51

if we turn that off it just looks it

play20:53

doesn't look anywhere near as cinematic

play20:56

and it's because by using the

play20:58

calibration we've removed colors

play21:00

and we've made a much stronger color

play21:02

theme to the image

play21:05

the calibration can be used in a much

play21:06

more practical way um i've got a shot of

play21:09

a bride and a groom here

play21:10

walking through this sea of kind of

play21:13

green foliage but it's very overpowering

play21:15

i don't really like the colors here

play21:17

if i were to go to the hsl um i could

play21:20

pull the luminance

play21:22

down and maybe the saturation

play21:25

maybe the hue but it's starting to look

play21:28

weird if we take some of the yellow out

play21:30

of there like that

play21:31

it doesn't look right so i'm going to go

play21:34

to my calibration and i'm going to take

play21:36

my green primary

play21:37

and i'm going to pull that up towards

play21:40

the blue

play21:41

so that now is looking very weird but if

play21:44

i take the blue primary

play21:45

and i pull that down that way and then

play21:48

to fix their skin tone

play21:50

i'm just going to pull the reds up a bit

play21:53

more into orange and just take a bit of

play21:55

saturation out of it

play21:56

if you see how the colors have shifted

play21:58

now with that calibration

play22:00

we've just taken the focus away from the

play22:03

green foliage

play22:04

and we've just pulled the tones

play22:07

kind of we're going to crunch them

play22:09

closer together

play22:11

so you can do lots of very interesting

play22:12

things with the calibration and what's

play22:14

great about it is it looks so natural

play22:16

when you do it

play22:18

it doesn't look like it's obviously been

play22:20

tweaked so while your calibration is

play22:22

good for just grading your whole image

play22:23

the hsl panel is great for

play22:26

just taking a specific color and

play22:28

changing it

play22:29

so maybe we want to make that chair

play22:31

purple we can do that

play22:33

or a vibrant green or we want to

play22:36

take the saturation out and only

play22:40

those areas of color are being affected

play22:44

number eight edit in the right

play22:46

conditions

play22:48

please don't go sit in a cafe with your

play22:51

macbook with sun streaming in at the

play22:52

window and try to edit color

play22:55

you need to edit in an environment where

play22:57

you can see the screen properly

play22:59

color calibrate your screen as well as

play23:01

i've said before

play23:03

in other videos take regular breaks go

play23:05

away and come back

play23:07

see your colorful creations with fresh

play23:10

eyes

play23:11

experiment with color push the

play23:13

boundaries a bit

play23:14

try some new things try abstract work

play23:17

try creating

play23:18

surreal colors using just in camera

play23:22

experiment with maybe re-editing older

play23:24

photos that you've taken see how

play23:25

different you can make them

play23:27

also feel free to further experiment

play23:29

with color by getting some of my

play23:30

lightroom preset packs

play23:32

i'll put a link in the description you

play23:33

can support my channel this way if you

play23:34

want i've got kodachrome emulation

play23:37

sydney still

play23:38

i've got aerochrome effects i've got

play23:40

some new ones coming out soon
