Summary

TLDRIn April 1981, a meticulously planned bank heist in Chicago saw 74 safe deposit boxes cracked and their valuables stolen without a trace. The mastermind, William Smart, posed as a customer and exploited the bank's temporary closure to hide inside, disabling alarms and meticulously cracking the boxes. Unusually, he targeted the wealthy, redistributing some of the stolen wealth to those he deemed less fortunate. Despite the FBI's detailed investigation, it was a janitor's suspicion that led to Smart's capture. He was sentenced to 20 years but had his term reduced to eight for returning the stolen property and detailing his ingenious method.
