Q & A

Does God need to be worshiped with material things?
When Thomas Aquinas treats this question, he leads us directly into the topic of the
nature of the human person. The human being is a spiritual animal composed of body and soul.
Therefore, it's fitting that human beings should live out their spiritual aspirations
towards God in their physical body in sensate ways using material things. The
human vocation is to submit the body to the soul and to submit the soul to God,
to live in an integrated and harmonious way with God.
This is why the sacraments matter. As everyone knows, Thomas Aquinas holds
that the human being is a composition of body and soul, and he posits that the spiritual soul
is the form of the body so that the body soul composite form one substance. I am
neither my body nor my soul but a concrete individual composed of both soul and body.
Likewise, reasonable acts of the mind and heart are lived out through the medium of
our sense life – that's to say, through our external senses of touch, taste, hearing,
smell, and sight and our internal senses of the imagination and the passions or emotions.
We are free thinking creatures but we are also embodied free thinking creatures.
When Aquinas asks the question whether sacraments are necessary for human beings, he appeals to this
fundamental anthropological truth about us. He notes that human beings from the beginning
have the vocation of submitting the body to the soul and the soul to God. In other words,
we should live out our senses, psychology, and emotional and imaginative life in the
service of the higher life of the mind and the heart in the service of truth and love.
But we also need to live out that intellectual and voluntary life in the service of God so that
there's a rightly ordered hierarchy moving through us from the visible to the invisible, and bringing
things into convergence in view of life with God. Part of this means that when we approach God
spiritually by interior acts of worship and prayer, we need to do so in an embodied way
through physical gestures and external rituals that help us elevate our whole
self, body, and soul toward God. For this reason, a certain kind of
religious exteriority is part of the nature of the human being as Aquinas sees it. Human beings
are sacrament producers or the kinds of beings who exteriorize their religious dispositions
towards God in exterior ways through gestures of the body, but also through external ceremonies.
Aquinas notes in addition that this dynamic of worshiping God in an embodied way so as to lift
the body up into the ambit of the spiritual life with God, so to speak, faces more acute challenges
after the fall of the human person from grace. In the understanding of Catholic Christian
theology, one of the effects of the fall is that the soul is no longer submitted to God by acts
of knowledge and love in grace and under grace. But it follows from this then, in addition, that
the soul often becomes submitted to the world of corporality and materiality in an exaggerated way.
In short, people lose interest in God and they take up interest in the senses,
material things and sensible pleasures. These things distract and absorb them so that they
no longer pay attention as it were to their vocation towards the transcendent mystery of God.
So sacraments are necessary, Aquinas thinks, in a remedial and, as he says, medicinal way to invite
human beings in the fallen world to discover the sacred presence of God through material things
so as to repair and restore the right ordering of the body to the soul and the soul to God.
The sacraments in this perspective appear as part of an economy of Mercy in which God condescends to
become human in the Incarnation so that we can encounter God in the historical sensible flesh
of Jesus Christ and his teachings and actions and sufferings. The sacraments then prolong a
kind of presence and activity of Jesus Christ in the world to lead us to the knowledge of God.
Aquinas also notes that this is a corrective and a protection against the problem of superstition
because human beings in a fallen world who do not know God well or how to worship God often produce
or fabricate religious customs or superstitious practices that can endanger them because they
can lead them away from a true knowledge of God and a true way of relating to God.
There are manifold examples of problematic religious practices in human religious traditions
from various forms of sacral violence to various forms of polytheistic sacrifice.
While there's something true in the human being seeking God in the sensible realm, Aquinas thinks
that the sacraments come to rectify and purify as well as elevate our human religious tendencies,
saving us from perilous forms of confusion and also from the skepticism of about religion that
results when people react critically to toxic forms of religiosity that arise in history.
St. Thomas speculates that there were sacraments in the world before the coming of Christ and even
before the time of Israel in a qualified sense. He thinks that there were inspired figures that
we see in the Old Testament such as Abel, or Melchizedek, or the patriarchs such as Jacob,
who are emblematic of this dynamic. These figures make use of ceremonies of
religion to symbolize their stance towards God and they do so prior to the time of the Mosaic
law. The Torah treats such figures, moreover, as images of virtuous people and as friends of God.
In his interpretation of their actions, Aquinas posits that such Old Testament figures were
moved inwardly by grace, and they received this grace in anticipation of the mystery of Christ,
and the merits of Christ. Inwardly and outwardly then they were moved by grace directing them to
the fulfillment of redemption in Christ, even if they were not explicitly aware of this fact.
Consequently, when they made use of religious rituals as signs of their communion with the
true and living God, they did so in a way that anticipated the one true sacrifice of the Cross.
That communion was established in grace, but they themselves made use of certain symbols
and ceremonies from their ambient culture to orient themselves toward God in an embodied way.
So Aquinas does not take on a purely skeptical view of all pre-Israelite religion, but based
on the witness of Scripture he suggests that sometimes God does work in human beings by grace,
even when they are themselves exploring their relationship with God in aspirational ways through
their physical activities and rituals of religion. At the same time, he thinks pre-Christian religion
has a kind of danger to it because it's often marked by erroneous views or by
practices that are ethically compromised. This is one of the ways he shows the
anthropological foundations for why we need the revelation of God to Israel to lead all of
humanity into a purity of understanding regarding God and his unity, his transcendence as Creator,
and to establish a purity of worship and rituals that truly orient human being
towards God on God's own terms, so to speak. So in summation, Aquinas is clear that in the
fallen world, the human being does need some kind of external collective ritualistic worship
in order to really unify the spiritual aspiration towards God in an embodied way. And in that sense,
all of us need a visible sacral religion. Ultimately, it is the institution of the
sacraments of the New Testament by Christ himself that provides this remedy and
this focus to human beings in search of an embodied way of knowing and worshiping God.
