I'm going to read the 23rd through the

35th verse that's Matthew chapter 18.

verses 23 through 35 very familiar

scripture to us

and it reads

therefore is the Kingdom of Heaven

likened unto a certain King

which would take account of his servants

and when he had begun to reckon one was

brought unto him which owed him ten

thousand talents

before as much as he had not to pay his

Lord commanded him to be sold

and his wife

and children

and all that he had and payment to be

made

the servant therefore fell down and

worshiped him saying Lord have patience

with me

and I will pay thee all

then the Lord of that servant

was moved with compassion and loosed him

and forgave him the debt

but the same servant went out and found

one of his fellow servants

which owed him a hundredth Pence

and he laid hands on him and took him by

the throat saying pay me that thou

always

and his fellow servant

fell down at his feet and besought him

saying have patience with me

and I will pay thee

and he would not

but went and cast him into prison

till he should pay the debt

so when his fellow servants saw what was

done they were very sorry

and came and told unto their lord all

that was done

then his Lord after that he had called

him

said unto him oh thou Wicked servant

I forgave thee all that debt

because thou desirest me

should not thou also had compassion on

thy fellow servant

even as I had pity on thee

and his Lord was rough and delivered him

to the tormentors till he should pay all

that was due unto him

so likewise shall my heavenly father do

read Matthew the 18th chapter verses 23

through 35 very familiar texts a very

familiar Parable to us as Jesus is

teaching and we know a parable is an

Earthly story with a Heavenly meaning

and we find it that Jesus is teaching

and he's preparing the people and

teaching them about being forgiving of

one another

just as God has forgiven you then you

ought to forgive somebody else

but I want to take a quick look at this

text In a Different Light

we understand that it's about

forgiveness and forgiving one another as

God has forgiven us we understand that

but there are some things in the text

that I just want us to take a quick look

at

when it comes to something I call

selective memory

selective memory

and here we find in our text this man

who owed his Lord a great debt

and was brought before him and what

should have happened his Lord should

have sold him into slavery and his wife

and his family too but when he pleaded

with his Lord

when he pleaded with him

his Lord forgave him of his debt

but thereafter quickly

he finds someone who owes of him a

lesser debt

and when the the person with the Lesser

debt

came to him with the same I will pay the

attack and and basically was pleading

to be forgiven

he said no

he would not forgive them

in fact had him placed in the prison

laid hands on him and had him placed in

the prison until he would pay

how quick did he forget

what the Lord his Lord had done for him

how quick do we forget

how quick do we forget what God has done

for us how quick do we forget how God

has blessed us and saved us how quick do

we forget how God has forgiven us of our

sin how quick do we forget

we forget so quick

he should have understood because he had

just been forgiven of his debt but no he

had forgot all about it

Psalms 119 55 said oh Lord I remember

your name in the night

and keep your law so we need to remember

what has been done to us and how we have

been blessed by the Living God

we need to remember it

because by remembering it it humbles us

you know it bothers me sometimes when we

about these folks who've made it rich

how quick they forget about where they

came from

how quick they forget about it oh

but it bothers me that they forget where

because they've made it

because they've gotten to the other side

God has blessed them

was my ability to do this or my ability

to do that no God gave you the ability

we find it in our churches over our

church history right here in America how

many singers grew up singing in the

church

but the moment they make it big you

don't find them in the church no more

so we are recognize we got to recognize

and remember

and not be so quick to forget

because when we do we become ineffective

to God

because we don't think about blessing

I know you've seen the news and you've

been watching like I have about Brett

Favre

and what he did to the poorest state in

our nation

how he was taking money that was

supposed to be for those who are in need

and giving it to those who really didn't

need it

that's selective memory that's

forgetting

from where you come from not remembering

so we find this servant

forgetting and not remembering

the second point is how he felt when his

debt

was before him

and he was facing punishment

how many times have you been before

somebody and you've been in trouble

and I don't raise a hand don't raise

your hand I I don't want to know about

it whether it was mama or daddy or the

police I don't want to know

but the idea of being in front of

somebody and facing

the punishment that the king had laid

out for him because the King was about

to sell him and his family into slavery

before he cried out

and asked for forgiveness

now you you got to remember those times

as well

when you mess up

something that we got to be careful with

we'll remember all the good stuff

but we won't remember the moments we

messed up

and all of us have messed up because the

Bible says all have sinned and come

short of the glory of God

so that means we've all come short

we all have sinned

so there's just so don't even act like

you've never been in trouble before

like I said it could be your mom or your

daddy your friend it could have been the

police itself you I don't know but guess

what you've been in trouble

and you remember that feeling because

you don't want to feel that feeling

again

when he stood before the Lord and the

Lord was about to cast punishment on him

because he did not pay the debt that he

owed

we can't forget

we have to remember the good and the bad

that's what we're talking about we've

been talking about over the past few

weeks we've been talking about this

thing called Truth

so we got to recognize the truth

just like this nation has to come to

grips with its truth

this was not a Christian Nation it

wasn't built on Christianity

it had principles of Christianity

but they weren't carried out even by the

church

anytime you can lock a man up and put

him in bondage for life

because of the color of his skin

that ain't what this Bible says

and they even used this Bible to twist

and they Twisted it

so that they could receive

the reward

for slavery

and this nation being built off the

backs of people

this Bible doesn't talk about claiming

whatever you want

Columbus didn't discover there was

people already here

so on their list don't get it twisted

we got to know our history

and yes we gotta accept the bad with the

good

we gotta understand how it feels

even when we see the things that happen

in our day

the Injustice that takes place

we have to be able to feel it

because the desire is not to be in that

Deuteronomy 5 15 says you shall remember

that you were a slave in the land of

Egypt God is reminding Israel yes you

were slaves in Egypt

but then he tells them as well and the

Lord brought you out

of thereby a mighty hand

and by an outstanding arm

there's a reason why they remember

Passover

there's a reason why they remember the

wilderness

or supposed to remember the Wilderness

not just for the Triumph before the

understanding where they were and what

God has done

don't have selective memory

don't just remember the good stuff

you gotta remember the good

with the bad the last point is right

here in the text he should have also

felt like it was

to be forgiven

imagine he's standing before the Lord

and he's guilty

he doesn't have the money to pay back

what he owes

and the Lord has the right to cast down

judgment on him

and to hear him say your debt has been

he should have felt that before

before he laid hands

he should have remembered how he felt

when he was in his place

and that's a problem we have in our

nation today

we have too many folks that just look

down on folks

and have selective memory

so we must remember how you feel to be

in their position

but also remember

how it feels to be forgiven

how it feels when When God says I

remember your sins no more

old things have passed away behold all

things have become new come on now you

got to remember when God said you're now

part of his family

and Heaven is your home

we have to remember

not to have selective memory because

that will cause us to treat people wrong

to treat people

like this servant treats the one that

owes him it's a small debt

but to remember

the good and the bad

for Matthew 6 14 says for if you forgive

others

when they sin against you

your heavenly father

will also

forgive you he will forgive you

he's not a respecter of persons

that's why he came and he took on flesh

for us

for God so loved the world that he gave

his only begotten son

that whosoever believeth in him should

not perish but have everlasting life

he gave of his Perfection and put on

flesh

and walked Among Us

and gave his life so that we might have

right to the Tree of Life

my friend we can't have

selective

memory if we want to be effective

it takes compassion

you can't just remember what you want to

remember

you got to remember it all and feel it

the bad the indifferent

because all of that is shaping you so

that you can have compassion for the

if he just thought about how good it

if this servant had just thought about

how good it felt when the Lord said

I forgive you of your debt

if he just thought about it

why would he want to give that same

that uh the servant that owed him

to give them that same opportunity and

because for those that don't know him

for those that have not made that

decision to make Jesus their choice

you got to have truth

and you got to remember

and you have to understand that yes

you haven't done everything right

and you need a savior his name

so you got to recognize that

and as you recognize it I want you to

understand that there's a savior who

gave his life for you

and he loves you so much

and his arms are open wide to receive

if you were just do two things

first you must recognize so you must

come to a reckoning

a truthful State about where you are

and that there's no other way to heaven

but through him

and Jesus says I will forgive you of

your sins

and I will cleanse you from all

unrighteous yes I will forgive you if

you truly mean it

secondly you must believe in the death

of burial and the resurrection of Jesus

Christ

if you believe not with a head knowledge

now we're just a heart and I'm not

talking about the blood pump I'm talking

about the inner man when I say the heart

the inner man that provokes you to

change and gives you a desire to live

for Christ forevermore

you truly believe

then God says he'll come in

promise he'll never leave you nor

forsake you

he'll come in he'll be with you

he will do it

and if there's one that wants to make

that choice today my friend I'm praying
