star bomani jones loved this guy
in college let's get to know the
all-star a little bit better
tell us give us some of the details of
the last time you were carded
uh last time i was car fired a week ago
uh buying a drink well you have a goatee
now they gotta just be messing with you
when they called you right
i don't even know if this counts down
but is there has there ever been a time
where you've been just a little bit
embarrassed by it because i remember
we've talked about you being carted at a
movie theater which is fairly ridiculous
steph it wasn't that long ago
and movie theater what is it 17 years
old yes that's that was the one that
hurt i guess i went with the baby face
clean shaving and all that and
and uh didn't go my way you know just
trying to buy a ticket
to go see a movie but uh that was
probably the most embarrassing when
i didn't even know where my id was at
that point because i wasn't expecting it
if i asked you to go back to the time in
your life for your career when you
doubted the most or you had the least
confidence what would you point to what
is the time in your life
you'd point to and say i was least
confident then
uh the beginning of my senior year in
high school i hadn't
gotten really many scholarship offers
and i
grew up in charlotte so i'm right there
in acc you know country and
and really no teams were coming and at
that point
um i got a little down because you know
you all you see
guys that you you play against all the
time you know signing letters of
letters to go to your major d1 schools
and all that and
and i was still kind of you know in the
whole recruiting process and
just had to to let it unfold and know i
would end up where i was supposed to
and and hopefully get a chance to play
some d1 basketball and make it happen
well was it particularly frustrating
that virginia tech your father's alma
mater
did not offer you a scholarship yeah
cause they were the one the first ones
to call
um and then nothing ever happened and
you kind of
added an insult to injury telling you
know i can you can come on
and red shirt and and uh you know pay
your own way to school your first year
in red shirt and we'll see what we can
do your second year so it's kind of like
we like you but don't really believe you
know that much in you
uh to you know offer you a full
scholarship now so we'll play that wait
and see game
is that the rejection that hurt the most
vatek would you like to tell them to eat
it right now on television feel free
[Laughter]
no that definitely hurt the most like
you said it was my dad's alma mater
it was a school that i wanted to go to
growing up you know obviously to follow
my pops footsteps but
um and the fact that they called so
early in the recruiting process i was
you know like a giddy kid like yeah this
is all gonna happen but uh
you know god had different plans for me
but say it steph go ahead and say it
go ahead and just say i mean you did
kind of but just say it eat it vodka
seth greenberg he knows i've had plenty
of conversations with him so he knows
oh seth works here now we can't do that
today's a big ticket day everybody's
still offering me tickets
jeff needed about 45-50 tickets
and i'll probably still get a call
before i get to the arena maybe even
before the game starts
here comes another call for tickets
right okay
hello it's december in charlotte north
carolina
dale curry a tv analyst for the bobcats
is on his way to work it's a short trip
that represents a long journey it's a
father's dream to watch your son
compete and do the things that you did
and he's better than you are
there's no doubt about it i can still
shoot a little bit but
he's way better than i ever was
he is the golden state warriors all-star
guard
dell's oldest son 26 year old
stephen curry still surreal to me for
real i mean
to come and play against him and see him
on the sidelines and i know
he's commentating on me now um trying to
stay as neutral as possible probably but
um you know it's still surreal for me
for sure
surreal because the nba's best shooter
was once a long shot
i think anyone could envision what he's
done on the basketball court
we knew he had the work ethic and the
drive and the dedication and the want
but
you just don't know how things are going
to work out
[Music]
march 14 1988 wardell stephen curry ii
was born
that summer his father a six foot four
shooting guard
joined the charlotte hornets curry pulls
up
knocks down the train he would make over
1200 threes in 16 seasons
earning a reputation as one of the best
shooters in the game
it's good that my teammates they know
when i'm in the zone they're gonna do
everything they can to get me the ball
i remember just on school nights i wish
that i could go to the game
my mom would say no you can't go to the
game on school nights because we're not
going to get home until 11 or
12. so when they had friday or saturday
at games
that was like the biggest deal for us
because we knew we were going to the
game that night
how much time did dale spend teaching
him the game
not very much at all because we wanted
to just let it come naturally
yeah i was a competitive guy i loved all
the sports that i played but there's
something about basketball
and kind of doing what your dad did that
had a little more of a draw to it
he didn't have to follow his dad's
footsteps he could do anything
he wanted to do try anything he wanted
to do but as long as he gave it 100
when i was in eighth grade i made a
decision to spend all year round on it
and
do what it took that was necessary to
play in college
welcome to another edition of off the
hardwood i'm your host paul jones and
today
we sit down with the curry clan all of
them we're all here
now i got to ask the guys uh stefan and
seth uh
do you play baseball at all knowing that
your dad used to play with the with the
glove in the ball how much do you guys
play baseball
we played baseball a lot when we were in
charlotte played for about
four or five years and never got into
pitching but
played everything else and i liked it
but i was more interested in basketball
at the time so
um it was more my sport kind of um
i had more um i was kind of better at it
it's
basketball and i wanted to um practice
some more on it and um
try to make it to the pros if i had
[Music]
but as a high school sophomore stefan
stood just five
foot six and weighed 125 pounds
lacking strength he still shot the ball
from his waist
told us if you want to play in the
college you're going to have to bring it
up
and get it up above your head over your
forehead so we worked at it all summer
it was
that was a tough summer for him
it was tough for me to watch them in the
backyard at late nights
a lot of hours during the day working on
his shot cause
i mean they broke it down to a point
where he couldn't even shoot at all
he'll be back there at times
crying not wanting to work on his game
he had to do a rap after rep after rep
to a point where he was able to master
it
with his remastered shot stefan averaged
just under 20 points a game his junior
season of high school
growing up in tar hill country and you
want to play for you know do gangster
state carolina and wake forest
and i wanted to play on that level i
don't ever remember even seeing him
i do know that when i did see him i
thought man he is little
the only major program to recruit stefan
was his father's alma mater
virginia tech and even they said
he would have to walk on
i don't think he's ever said it before
but i mean you could tell that
that hurt him a little bit how did you
handle the disappointment of those
bigger schools not
coming after you um i used it as
motivation that summer
before my senior year in high school to
just just play my game and
you know the right coach and the right
college would come and make themselves
known
that they wanted me that college was
davidson
a small liberal arts school 20 minutes
north of home
[Music]
the big time schools didn't recruit him
because of his uh
his appearance i think his size his
stature
people just saw him as a low major
mid-major guard that uh they were
a dime a dozen what did you see
in him i i saw brilliance
just the way he talked and the
confidence that he
expressed and how you know i could
impact you know that team right away
you know if i allowed him to to let him
coach me
that good things would happen his first
game as a college player he started
against eastern michigan up in ann arbor
and and in the first half he had nine
turnovers
we're down 18 points at halftime i'm
rethinking whether he belongs to being a
starting lineup
put him in a starting lineup in the
second half we won the game
next night against michigan he dropped
32.
but the best was yet to come for stefan
who had grown to six foot three by his
sophomore season
[Applause]
march 21st 2008 curry
3 yes the ncaa tournament
with his parents in the stands stefan
scored 40 against gonzaga
two days later he dropped 30 on
georgetown
curry driving on wallace a high three
got it
i don't even have the words to kind of
describe that whole experience i mean
we just sat there and just scratched our
head we come home and we'd say
fell not just like can you believe that
and we'd almost ride home in silence
because it was just like what is he
going to show
us next time to curry left-hand corner
let's grab it off go buy it
the star of the tournament whose legend
continues to grow
stefan curry he averaged 32 points a
game in davidson's cinderella run to the
elite eight
in a span of 10 days stephen curry
had become a household name
we changed from being dell's son to
dale being his father a couple days
later the bobcats had a game
and we got tickets i told him i said i'm
gonna bring steph to the game and the
security guy calls me goes do you need
security i'm gonna
nah you don't need security what do you
mean he comes to the games all the time
he said okay so we get to the game mob
is like a rock star i'm like oh we need
some security here so
that's what i knew okay things have
changed
in his junior season there was more of
the same
he led the nation in scoring averaging
almost 29 points a game
then declared for the 2009 nba draft
i kind of heard the same stuff outside
going into the nba up too small
not athletic enough can't play defense
not strong enough
[Applause]
i was nervous obviously making that
transition is a big deal
with the seventh pick in the 2009 nba
draft
the golden state warriors select
stephen curry from davidson college
the 6th street junior guard out of
davidson
quite simply is the best shooter in the
draft
he's gonna have to improve his
decision-making a little bit with the
ball in his hands
and his shot selection has got to get a
little bit better he's got
really deep range it goes beyond nba
and here is curry hitting another three
in 2010 stefan finished second in the
rookie of the year voting
but in the next two seasons chronic
right ankle problems would force him to
miss 48 games
and undergo two surgeries
curry is hurt same angle
he went straight down and never moved oh
man
every question i got was you know how
are your ankles you know
are you going to be like pseudo grant
hill story or
where you have an injury that kind of
holds you back from reaching your full
potential
he's always injured the rumors are it's
really tough
so it was good that he could be here
with our family to keep that
encouragement while he was very happy
but again he's a very competitive
determined kid he wouldn't let it stop
him
[Music]
regular people do regular things come on
man you're not regular you're not
regular come on i wanna fly
can you take me far
away give me a start and reach for
tell
[Music]
so me my feet won't touch the ground
they stitch my wings and pull the
strings about these strings
[Music]
bingo
got marion off his feet and scores
[Applause]
sweet
[Applause]
are you kidding me
[Music]
hurry for the lead
oh curry turn the around and hit
the chopper
[Music]
again
and it's the largest lead of the game
i wanna fight can you take
me far away
give me a start and reach for tell me
[Music]
curry steps back oh steffen perry
wins some magic
hurries he lost him and hit a three
have a timeout decide not to use it
curry way downtown
bang bang oh what a shot from curry
five six
step three
[Music]
62.
