Transcripts

play00:00

Hey, folks.

play00:00

I'm Andrei, also known as Meddler.

play00:02

And I’m Paul, also known as Pabro.

play00:04

We're back with another Dev Update today.

play00:06

It's September 10th, so everything after today won't be covered.

play00:10

We've got a wide range of topics to cover today, including matchmaking,

play00:13

Teemo’s art and audio update,

play00:15

LoL Player Days, a bit on Worlds, and a quick look at Season 2025.

play00:20

But first, let's hear from the Modes team.

play00:22

Hey everyone,

play00:22

Eduardo “Riot Cadmus” Cortejoso

play00:24

here to give you an update on Modes.

play00:26

It's been a big year for us.

play00:27

Not only did Arena make its return for round 3, but we also launched Swarm.

play00:31

These modes have been such a joy for all of us to work on,

play00:34

and so on behalf of the entire Modes team, thank you all for playing.

play00:38

Now let's get into the future of Arena and Swarm.

play00:41

I'll start with the question everyone's been asking:

play00:44

“Are you going to make Arena permanent?”

play00:45

The short answer is no.

play00:48

While Arena has been getting a lot of love from many of you,

play00:51

once we hit the two-month mark we saw a pretty big drop-off in game hours

play00:55

and engagement.

play00:55

Unfortunately, even our mid-run content update

play00:58

didn't quite inspire a lot of players to come back.

play01:01

But don't worry, Arena won't be gone forever.

play01:04

We're planning on bringing it back in the first half of next year

play01:06

with some much needed quality of life improvements

play01:08

and even some more wacky augments for you to play around with.

play01:12

Now for Swarm.

play01:14

So from the beginning Swarm was never intended to be a permanent game mode,

play01:18

and that's still the case right now.

play01:19

I know a lot of us, myself included,

play01:22

look back fondly on both Star Guardian and Odyssey, but Swarm

play01:25

actually surpassed both of these modes in terms of player engagement.

play01:28

And while we don't have a decision on if or when Swarm will be back

play01:32

just yet, given how much you all played we're taking some of the learnings

play01:36

into consideration for future game modes and even the potential return of Swarm.

play01:40

I also wanted to let you know

play01:42

that Ultimate Spellbook will be returning as our next Rotating Game Mode.

play01:45

It's already on PBE right now and will be going out next patch.

play01:48

And before I go, I wanted to talk a little bit about ARAM.

play01:52

We know ARAM

play01:52

hasn't gotten much focus this year outside of regular balance updates.

play01:56

But don't worry ARAM enjoyers, we’ve got something cooking for you

play01:59

that will be oven-fresh before the end of the year.

play02:01

That's it for the Modes team for now.

play02:03

Make sure to check out the dev blog that comes out with this video

play02:06

for more information on both Swarm and Arena.

play02:09

And we'll be back in January to walk you through some of our plans in 2025.

play02:13

Hey, everyone, I’m Riot Phroxzon

play02:15

I'm here to talk to you about matchmaking.

play02:16

Today we wanted to take a moment to look at

play02:18

how some of the changes we introduced this season have landed

play02:21

and to share the areas we're looking to tackle next.

play02:23

Earlier this year

play02:24

we had an issue causing some accounts to enter negative LP states.

play02:28

This meant players would lose more LP per loss than they gained per

play02:31

win, even if their MMR indicated they should be climbing.

play02:34

As of today, we no longer see this problem,

play02:36

Another problem we've been working on is autofilling.

play02:39

We don't want games to be decided by which team has fewer autofilled players,

play02:43

so we shipped some changes

play02:44

in 14.17 to better balance the amount of filled players on each team.

play02:48

At the time of recording, we've noticed some pretty good improvements,

play02:51

with the amount of games with an autofill discrepancy of 2 or more players

play02:55

dropping from 10-15% to less than 0.1%.

play02:59

As of today,

play02:59

games with 2:0 or 3:1 autofilled players have been effectively

play03:03

eliminated!

play03:05

This is a good first step, but we want to do more work in this area.

play03:08

Next up, we'll be working on situations where one team has

play03:11

an autofilled player and the other doesn’t,

play03:14

with a focus on high MMR

play03:15

where this problem is especially impactful because of the small player populations.

play03:19

We've also got an evaluation underway on a system called TrueSkill2.

play03:22

That could potentially help out meaningfully with things

play03:24

like better placing new accounts and detection of smurfs.

play03:27

As of now, we're actively testing its effectiveness

play03:30

and determining how good a fit it is for League.

play03:32

We'll let you all know once we have an update on what testing has shown.

play03:35

And that's it for me today.

play03:37

Make sure to check out the dev blog that just came out with a lot more details

play03:40

on how our 2024 changes landed, and where we're looking to focus our efforts going forward.

play03:44

All right, a slight change of pace.

play03:46

Let's talk about Teemo’s art and audio update.

play03:48

It's coming to the Rift in patch 14.20

play03:51

with updated visuals, audio animations, and splash art.

play03:54

Gameplay won't be changing,

play03:55

so for those of you who love or hate Teemo, you're welcome

play03:58

and/or we're sorry maybe.

play04:00

When this update comes out we'll be increasing the cost of his

play04:02

Happy Elf, Recon, and Badger skins to 750 RP given the increased quality on those skins.

play04:07

As with Lee Sin’s update earlier in the year, if you don't own these skins yet

play04:10

you can purchase them for 520 RP

play04:12

until it goes live if you want to get them at that cheaper price.

play04:15

if you'd like to learn more, check out our blog that's live today

play04:17

that goes into a whole bunch of details

play04:19

about our favorite little monster and making him look brand new.

play04:21

Also, Teemo is receiving a theme song which will go live next week.

play04:25

Here's a sneak peek.

play04:35

Switching topics. we’ve got Worlds 2025 kicking off in 3 days on Sept. 25 with Play-Ins in Berlin.

play04:41

After Berlin, it’s then Paris for both Quarterfinals and Semifinals, followed by London for the Finals.

play04:47

This year we’ve brought back Pick’Ems, along with a new feature we’re calling “Global Power Rankings.”

play04:52

That we think should be good if you want to get up to speed on teams or regions

play04:54

that you’re less familiar with. Or maybe you just want to argue with our rankings

play04:58

about how your favorite teams stack up against their competition globally.

play05:01

We just dropped a dev blog that explains Global Power Rankings in more detail

play05:02

We just dropped a dev blog that explains Global Power Rankings in more detail

play05:05

so go check it out if you want to learn more.

play05:07

And finally, the Worlds Anthem will drop tomorrow, so keep your eyes and ears peeled for that.

play05:12

In case you missed it, this year’s Worlds artist is Linkin Park

play05:17

Along with Worlds in October, we'll also be celebrating

play05:19

League Player Days, a celebration of your League journeys

play05:22

over the last 15 years.

play05:24

Player days will be three themed days that celebrate players

play05:26

of all kinds, from casual enjoyers to hardcore Ranked climbers.

play05:30

The celebration will kick off with Creative Day with a focus

play05:32

especially on artists, then Music Day to celebrate our true calling,

play05:36

being a music company

play05:38

and finally Esports Day to highlight the ultimate competition in League.

play05:42

On each day, we'll share stories from players around the globe about what

play05:45

League means to them.

play05:46

There'll also be some missions you can complete for earnable in-game content,

play05:50

including a very special Ann-Sivir-sary Sivir Skin.

play05:54

Nailed it!

play05:55

There will also be 3 Player Days skins available

play05:58

for purchase with proceeds going towards the Riot Games Social Impact Fund:

play06:01

These will be Cosplayer Neeko,

play06:04

Esports Fan Trundle,

play06:07

and finally, the skin

play06:08

you've all been waiting decades for,

play06:10

celebrating love for the music of K/DA, the one,

play06:14

the only

play06:16

Gragas

play06:20

For every purchase of these 3 Player Day Skins from October 9th

play06:23

to October 28th, 2024, Riot will contribute 100% of proceeds

play06:28

as well as a 3x match to the Riot Games Social Impact Fund.

play06:32

The festivities kick off on October 9th, which will also have a Dev Q&A

play06:36

stream at 2pm

play06:37

Pacific Time.

play06:38

Join to have some fun with League devs,

play06:40

hear some stories from the old days,

play06:42

celebrate all of you, and just hang out.

play06:45

But we want to be clear there won't be any big announcements

play06:48

or new games, so please stop by and say “hi.”,

play06:50

chat about League, and meme with us or on us.

play06:53

While Player Days is all about

play06:54

celebrating your League journeys over the past 15 years,

play06:57

we also want to talk a bit about our plans for next year.

play07:00

Starting in 2025 we’re evolving our approach with League Seasons.

play07:03

Throughout the year, we'll have three distinct thematic seasons, each

play07:06

bringing its own narrative, progression, and content updates.

play07:09

Our goal is for each season to feel distinct,

play07:12

with different experiences, themes, moments, etc.,

play07:16

highlighted.

play07:16

So that means in 2025, each season will include a new champion

play07:20

that’s a core part of that season's thematic,

play07:22

with some connection to champions from other seasons as well.

play07:26

Each season will also have gameplay updates too

play07:28

of course. One thing we'll be tackling for the first season next year

play07:31

is how a game can feel doomed once you have an exposed Nexus,

play07:34

and quite often, people lose motivation to continue to fight.

play07:36

So we're exploring options on how to solve this experience, and hope

play07:40

to bring a more competitive feel right to the very end of the game.

play07:43

Now we'll look at some larger scope changes as well, of course,

play07:46

but we're going to be saving those for a little bit.

play07:48

We know we didn’t get into too much detail on gameplay today,

play07:51

we'll have a lot more on our January plans in a dev update

play07:54

in November, a few days after the finale of Arcane.

play07:57

All right, so that's it for now.

play07:59

Don't forget to finalize your Pick’Ems, tune into Worlds, read the dev blogs,

play08:03

and join us for Player Days.

play08:04

As always, thank you for watching and we'll see you on the Rift.

play08:08

See ya. Bye.
