Transcripts
Bismillah. Let me ask you, what would happen ifĀ we woke up tomorrow and everything we depended onĀ Ā
just stopped working? No electricity, no phones,Ā no Internet, just for a day? Most of us wouldĀ Ā
panic, wouldn't we? And here's the crazy part. ForĀ thousands of years, our ancestors lived perfectlyĀ Ā
fine without any of this technology. How dependentĀ we've become on technology. Now, if that alone isĀ Ā
frightening, what I'm about to tell you will makeĀ you question everything about the future. There'sĀ Ā
something far bigger coming into our lives,Ā something that will change the world forever.Ā Ā
And we Muslims need to be ready. We need to thinkĀ deeply about it, because it's already weavingĀ Ā
itself into our society. It's called artificialĀ intelligence. AI. As we navigate this new era,Ā Ā
our faith and values will guide us through theĀ challenges and opportunities AI presents. ButĀ Ā
before we dive into AI, let's pause for aĀ moment and reflect on what Islam teaches usĀ Ā
about technological advances. In the Quran,Ā Allah tells us in Surah al Baqarah, indeed,Ā Ā
in the creation of the heavens and the earth andĀ the alternation of the night and the day, andĀ Ā
the great ships which sail through the sea withĀ that which benefits people. And what Allah hasĀ Ā
sent down from the heavens of rain, giving lifeĀ thereby to the earth after its lifelessness andĀ Ā
dispersing therein. Every kind of moving creatureĀ and his directing of the winds and the cloudsĀ Ā
controlled between the heaven and the earth, areĀ signs for a people who use reason. Everything inĀ Ā
the heavens and the earth is a sign, a reminderĀ of Allah's power and wisdom. Technology, too,Ā Ā
is a means by which we navigate the world, a toolĀ that Allah has allowed us to create through theĀ Ā
intellect he gave us. But here's the catch, myĀ brothers and sisters. Tools can either bringĀ Ā
us closer to Allah or take us further away. Now,Ā AI has the potential to revolutionize the way weĀ Ā
live, but it also brings with it profound ethicalĀ challenges, especially for us as Muslims. We needĀ Ā
to ask ourselves, how will this technology alignĀ with our deen? What impact will it have on ourĀ Ā
society, on our faith, and on the way we practiceĀ Islam? Artificial intelligence, in simple terms,Ā Ā
is when we program machines to mimic humanĀ thought. Just think about that for a second.Ā Ā
Machines imitating the human mind. For the last 15Ā or 20 years, weve been developing AI to make ourĀ Ā
lives easier. But now its moving at such a paceĀ that we can no longer predict whats coming next.Ā Ā
As Muslims, we recognize that only Allah isĀ al Khalik, the creator. No matter how advancedĀ Ā
technology becomes, it cannot replace the divineĀ act of creation. But here's what's concerning AIĀ Ā
is getting so advanced that it's starting to makeĀ decisions that even the programmers don't fullyĀ Ā
understand. And this could lead to massiveĀ consequences, both positive and negative.Ā Ā
For example, AI is already being used to makeĀ life or death decisions in certain situations,Ā Ā
like self driving cars or medical diagnoses. AndĀ here's where the ethical dilemmas come in. How doĀ Ā
we as Muslims, ensure that such technology doesn'tĀ contradict our values? How do we ensure it doesn'tĀ Ā
override human empathy and mercy, qualities thatĀ are central to our faith? Let me break it downĀ Ā
for you. AI is already present in ways you mightĀ not even realize. For instance, translation toolsĀ Ā
powered by AI can translate conversations intoĀ different languages in real time. Google can nowĀ Ā
recognize your voice and translate it into anyĀ language. Facial recognition software. This isĀ Ā
something that's being used by governmentsĀ to track individuals. And let's be real,Ā Ā
it's a scary form of surveillance. Imagine walkingĀ down the street and a camera captures a blurryĀ Ā
side profile of you. With AI, the system canĀ identify you in an instant. As Muslims, we believeĀ Ā
that only Allah has knowledge of everything. InĀ Surah al Anam, Allah says, and with him are theĀ Ā
keys of the unseen. None knows them except him.Ā But with Aihdem, were seeing human attempts toĀ Ā
gather this kind of vast knowledge, knowledgeĀ about who we are, where we go and what we do.Ā Ā
This technology is beginning to mimic the abilityĀ to know things that were once private. Is this notĀ Ā
a sign of the times, as the prophet Muhammad,Ā peace be upon him, warned us about the Dajal,Ā Ā
the false messiah, who will deceive people andĀ present false miracles. In many ways, AI couldĀ Ā
represent one of the tools through which peopleĀ are deceived or led astray. But specific AI, likeĀ Ā
translation tools or facial recognition, is justĀ the tip of the iceberg. There's something evenĀ Ā
more terrifying on the horizon. General AI. ThisĀ is a system that won't just be good at one thing,Ā Ā
like language or medicine, but will be able toĀ understand, learn and operate in every fieldĀ Ā
imaginable. Imagine having a conversation withĀ an AI that knows everything. It could answer yourĀ Ā
questions, advise you on any matter, and even makeĀ decisions that affect your life. Now, as Muslims,Ā Ā
we know that the prophet Muhammad, peace beĀ upon him, said in a hadith, seek knowledge fromĀ Ā
the cradle to the grave. But what happens when aĀ machine knows more than you? What happens when AIĀ Ā
knows more about Islam than we do? Here's where itĀ gets complicated. We already have early prototypesĀ Ā
of AI being used to answer islamic questions.Ā There was even an AI fatwa program that causedĀ Ā
a disaster because it gave incorrect and confusingĀ answers. But the frightening reality is that thisĀ Ā
technology will keep advancing. Soon we might haveĀ an AI scholar giving fatwas, interpreting hadith,Ā Ā
and even analyzing quranic verses. And thisĀ raises serious concerns. Who will overseeĀ Ā
these AI systems? How can we trust their judgmentĀ when they lack the understanding of spirituality,Ā Ā
mercy, and wisdom that our scholars have spentĀ lifetimes cultivating? This is why it's crucialĀ Ā
for us as an uma, to engage with these issues.Ā AI can be a blessing. If used correctly, it couldĀ Ā
revolutionize education, make healthcare moreĀ accessible, and even help solve global challengesĀ Ā
like poverty or climate change. But if we're notĀ careful, it could lead to ethical and moral decay.Ā Ā
There's a hadith where the prophet Muhammad, peaceĀ be upon him, said, the strong believer is betterĀ Ā
and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer,Ā while there is good in both, as we develop AI,Ā Ā
we must strive to be strong believers, those whoĀ use this technology for the benefit of humanity,Ā Ā
not for harm. We need to ensure that AI servesĀ us, not the other way around. We need to be atĀ Ā
the forefront of guiding its development so thatĀ it aligns with islamic principles of justice,Ā Ā
mercy, and the preservation of human dignity.Ā But my brothers and sisters, I can't stress thisĀ Ā
enough. We must be vigilant. One of the mostĀ dangerous aspects of AI is its potential toĀ Ā
manipulate what we see and hear. Already, socialĀ media platforms use AI to curate our feeds. HaveĀ Ā
you ever noticed that after watching one video,Ā similar ones keep popping up? This is AI at work,Ā Ā
learning your preferences, shaping your worldview.Ā Imagine this on a larger scale. Governments andĀ Ā
corporations using AI to shape public opinion,Ā opinion, control the narrative, and even distortĀ Ā
the truth. This is something we've alreadyĀ seen in recent years. AI can track your habits,Ā Ā
predict your behavior, and influence yourĀ decisions without you even realizing it.Ā Ā
And this should deeply concern us as MuslimsĀ in Surah al Hajrat. 49 six Allah warns us,Ā Ā
o you who have believed. If there comes to you,Ā a disobedient one, with information, investigate,Ā Ā
lest you harm a people out of ignorance andĀ become over what you have done. Regretful AIĀ Ā
might present us with information that seemsĀ accurate but could be used to manipulate us.Ā Ā
This is why we must always return to our coreĀ values, truth, justice, and the preservationĀ Ā
of our faith. So where does this leave us? AI isĀ coming whether we like it or not. But as Muslims,Ā Ā
we cannot be passive observers. We must engageĀ with this technology critically, ensuring thatĀ Ā
it serves the greater good and adheres to islamicĀ ethics. We need to educate ourselves, stay aware,Ā Ā
and always prioritize the principles of our deenĀ over the convenience of technology. In the end, noĀ Ā
matter how advanced AI becomes, we know that onlyĀ Allah holds the keys to the unseen. Only he isĀ Ā
the true creator. And no machine can ever replaceĀ the divine wisdom and mercy of Allah. But it's ourĀ Ā
responsibility to ensure that the tools we createĀ bring us closer to Allah, not further away. MayĀ Ā
Allah guide us to use knowledge and technology inĀ ways that benefit the ummah and all of humanity.Ā Ā
Jazakum Allah khair for listening. And until nextĀ time, inshallah. Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah.
