Outlines
🌾 The Netherlands: A Small but Powerful Agricultural Giant
The Netherlands is the second-largest food producer and exporter in the world, despite being a small country. Photographer Kadir van Lohuizen explores the nation's impressive food production and export industry. He discovers how Dutch crops, particularly onions, have gained global recognition. The country exports a large portion of its onions, which are particularly popular in markets such as West Africa. The success is attributed to the favorable climate, advanced knowledge, and logistical capabilities of the Netherlands.
🚜 A Dutch Farmer Turned Global Trader
Michiel van Andel, a Dutch farmer, uses GPS technology while driving his tractor and monitors weather patterns globally to predict onion prices. The interconnected nature of global markets has transformed farming into a trading activity. Van Andel's farm exports the majority of its onions to Africa. The summary touches on the complex logistics of export, the challenges faced by farmers due to weather, and the significant role the Netherlands plays in global onion supply.
🍅 The Tomato Empire: Agro Care’s High-Tech Production
Agro Care, Europe's largest tomato producer, operates a highly advanced greenhouse in the Wieringermeerpolder. The company grows thousands of tomato plants, employing mostly migrant labor from Romania and Bulgaria. With modern tracking systems, management closely monitors workers' productivity. About 80% of their tomato production is for export, even to countries like Italy and Spain, which are known for their tomatoes. This raises questions about whether the Netherlands should continue to focus on such high levels of export.
🚢 The Rotterdam Port: Soy Trade Powerhouse
While Rotterdam is Europe’s largest port, it is Amsterdam that handles the largest soy transfers in Europe. Soy shipments from the Americas are imported for use in the feed industry or re-exported to surrounding countries. These exports are a key component of the global food supply chain, with soy being vital for both the animal feed industry and various industrial applications.
🧀 Cheese and Milk: The Netherlands' Dairy Dominance
The Netherlands produces vast amounts of cheese and dairy products, most of which are exported around the world. At FrieslandCampina, one of the largest dairy producers globally, they manufacture condensed milk, most of which is sent to Asia and the Middle East. The Dutch dairy sector is heavily automated, producing huge quantities for international markets, with the country exporting about 95% of its dairy products.
🐄 Calves and Leather: A Byproduct of Dutch Dairy
In the Dutch dairy industry, calves are separated from their mothers to ensure milk production. The Van Drie family business, one of the largest calf processors in Europe, slaughters over 1.5 million calves annually, exporting over 90% of the meat to countries like Italy, Germany, and France. Every part of the animal is utilized, with calf hides used in the fashion industry by brands like Hermes and Chanel. The company emphasizes the traceability of their products, using every part of the animal in various industries.
✈️ The International Food Supply Chain at Schiphol
The logistics hub at Schiphol airport manages the import and export of various food products such as beef, seafood, and vegetables. Products like fish from Lake Victoria are brought in daily, quickly inspected by Dutch authorities for safety, and then sold on the local and international markets. Schiphol plays a vital role in the global supply chain, handling products that arrive fresh from countries like Tanzania and Kenya.
🦐 Seafood Inspection at the Maasvlakte
The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) oversees the inspection of food imports at the second Maasvlakte port, where vast amounts of seafood, such as shrimp from Vietnam, are processed. Containers are inspected for quality, including temperature checks and even taste tests when necessary. This ensures the safety and quality of imported food before it enters the European market.

mij nu scheerigheid was gewekt per mijn
zoektocht in het Nederlandse Voedsel
landschap dan zijn naam van
[Muziek]
doodgewone Nederlandse ui wereldberoemd
is
[Muziek]
produceren Nederland bijna 1,5 miljoen
Ton uien Ton
[Muziek]
is heel erg sport Dat is bijna 80 85
meter percent afhankelijk van een jaar
eh wordt dat geëxporteerd
eh diverse landen de grote continenten
denk bijvoorbeeld aan het continent
Afrika uh maar ook Azië want de
consumptie van uien in dit soort landen
eh Wij eten Nederland maar ongeveer 7
kilo per eh per eh per cap eh per jaar
houdt
als het veel regen in Zuidoost Azië
stijgt de uienprijs
zo wordt een boer een beurshandelaar in
een tractor

[Muziek]
Kijk eens

[Muziek]
de Rotterdamse haven is dan wel de
grootste van Europa maar wat Rotterdam
niet heeft Amsterdam wel
[Muziek]
Dat is namelijk dus soja Overslag van
Europa
met grote regelmaat komen er bulcarious
uit Amerika in Brazilië met soja bestemd
voor de fee voor industrie
grote zuigerslegere ruimen dus soja
wordt overgeladen op binnenvaartschepen
gaat naar de Nederlandse
veevoerbedrijven of voor doorgevoerd
naar de onzomeringende landen

bij Frieslandcampina Een van de grootste
zuivelbedrijven van de wereld maken zijn
Leeuwarden geëvacareerde melk koffiemelk
en gecondenseerde melk van die dikke
zoete melk in een blikje
in de fabriek bijna geen mensen bekennen
Het is vergaande geautomatiseerd
duizenden blikjes schiet aan alle kanten
voorbij
95% is export daar Met name het midden
en het verre Oosten en Europa
[Muziek]
[Muziek]
het familiebedrijf van drie is één van
de grootste kalverslachtig rijden in
Europa zij hebben bijna 30% van de markt
in handen
[Muziek]
anderhalf miljoen kalveren worden per
jaar geslacht tijd van drie meer dan 90%
is voor de export maar met name
Duitsland Italië en Frankrijk want wij
eten nauwelijks kalsvlees
Ik dacht kalveren zijn klein maar wat
zijn ze groot naar zes maanden klaar
voor de slacht
[Muziek]
werken met met levende dieren dat
betekent ook hè dat na het meest
kritische moment het slachte ook zorgen
dat alles van een dier goed wordt
benutten
[Muziek]
allemaal alweer grondstoffen
[Muziek]
dat Nederland groot is een Export Dat
kwartje begint wel te vallen Hebben
importeren ook van alles
de chaos op Schiphol hebben velen van
ons meegemaakt maar aan het oog
omtrokken liggen naast vertrek al één en

grote stukken vlees uit Uruguay worden
voorzichtig uit de verpakking gehaald de
temperatuur wordt gemeten en er wordt
aangeroken
wij doen de impokeuringen van de namen
vis vandaag doen we heel veel vis en
vlees leverde dieren insecten noem maar
op een bepaalde honden katten alles wat
binnenkomt
verpakkingsdatum
even Yes We zitten open snijden
goedgekeurd
zie je
[Muziek]
op Schiphol komen dagelijks 2 tot 3
grote vrachtvluchten uit Tanzania of
Kenia aan met nijlbaars uit het
Victoriameer
gisteren daar gevangen vandaag in
Nederland en daar blijft het ook voor
het grootste deel en wordt verkocht als
witvis
ernaast schijnt het in vissticks te
zitten
Kapitein iglo Vaart dus helemaal niet
