Transcripts
good afternoon guys so the thing is I haveĀ never attended an international schoolĀ Ā
nor have I ever lived in an English-speakingĀ country but by learning English on my own inĀ Ā
a lazy way I managed to achieve a pretty goodĀ level in English I would say and I actuallyĀ Ā
also completed my bachelor and master's degreeĀ which were instructed in English I already didĀ Ā
two videos regarding language learning advicesĀ in general this one and this one so if you areĀ Ā
interested the links are in the description boxĀ below but today I wanna share with you guys moreĀ Ā
specifically about how I learned English byĀ myself in a fun and lazy way without so let'sĀ Ā
get right in! First Step watch YouTube videos orĀ any other medias that you preferred and watchĀ Ā
it without English subtitles first for at leastĀ I would say 30 minutes a day for about a weekĀ Ā
you might be wondering why Why without EnglishĀ subtitles because personally I find it much lessĀ Ā
stressful to watch videos in the beginning withoutĀ subtitles because it can be overwhelming sometimesĀ Ā
with so many subtitles so many new vocabularyĀ and so on and remember we are here to have funĀ Ā
right we are here to enjoy language learningĀ process and to enjoy our life so that's notĀ Ā
overwhelm ourselves in the first week of learningĀ this language and another important reason IĀ Ā
believe to watch videos without subtitle is toĀ try to develop your language sense from day oneĀ Ā
so when you are watching the videos try to focusĀ on how this language is spoken by people you knowĀ Ā
the tones the Rhythm and also how people speakĀ English their facial expression their mouth theirĀ Ā
body languages and so on and so on have you everĀ heard of a statement saying that our personalitiesĀ Ā
shift when speaking a different language IĀ find this statement so interesting and so trueĀ Ā
so anyway in first week of learning English justĀ try to get a sense of how this language functionĀ Ā
and you will be good step number two so afterĀ watching videos without subtitles for aboutĀ Ā
a week now it's time to turn on your subtitlesĀ and watch it with English subtitles so I usuallyĀ Ā
prefer to watch videos that are less than 10Ā minutes long otherwise I find it quite easyĀ Ā
to get overwhelmed as a beginner and also asĀ a beginner my go-to videos to watch are alwaysĀ Ā
always travel vlogs because I find it not onlyĀ very entertaining to watch it also contains manyĀ Ā
changing scenes so it's gonna help me a lotĀ to navigate what he or she is talking aboutĀ Ā
and to guess the meaning of sentences and wordsĀ additionally I would also prioritize watchingĀ Ā
videos that contains a familiar topics placesĀ or products, etc. For example I'm pretty familiarĀ Ā
with Japan as I used to live there before so myĀ go-to video to watch as a beginner would be JapanĀ Ā
travel vlogs because even without knowing theĀ language a familiar topic like this would helpĀ Ā
me immensely in understanding the context and alsoĀ in guessing the meaning of the sentences and wordsĀ Ā
third step pick a shorter video that you loveĀ watching and repeat after each sentence of whatĀ Ā
the speaker said with EMOTION as if you wereĀ the speaker yourself this is very importantĀ Ā
and you might wonder why with emotion becauseĀ based on my personal experience I find myselfĀ Ā
improved much faster especially in speaking whenĀ I involve my emotion in Reading English out loudĀ Ā
like mimicking their tones their rhythms theirĀ facial expressions and even their hand gestures IĀ Ā
remember when I was a teenager I love watchingĀ Nigahiga's contents to an extent that I evenĀ Ā
memorized the whole scripts of some of my favoriteĀ videos and acted out myself yeah just involve yourĀ Ā
emotion in reading the English sentences and itĀ is also much more interesting and fun to do thatĀ Ā
at least that's what I felt you might be alsoĀ wondering do I look up the words that I don'tĀ Ā
know when watching videos well yes sometimes IĀ do but only when I feel like doing it and onlyĀ Ā
when I'm like curious about a certain word I'veĀ never followed any rules like you have to writeĀ Ā
down all the new words that you don't know andĀ look it up later or you have to write down atĀ Ā
least 10 words each day in order to memorize itĀ etc etc I just do what I feel like doing and justĀ Ā
have fun now moving on to the fourth step talk toĀ yourself it's time to talk to yourself so to beĀ Ā
honest you can talk about anything you want likeĀ anything whether it's about your day or about theĀ Ā
videos or articles that you watch that you readĀ that day but personally I find it super usefulĀ Ā
to talk to yourself when you experience someĀ sort of emotion like when you are excited youĀ Ā
are happy or you are angry sad confused etc etcĀ I find it very funny because whenever I run intoĀ Ā
some shitty things shitty situations that justĀ made me really angry and want to complain a lotĀ Ā
I usually like all of a sudden become really goodĀ at English speaking when complaining about things.
Surprised!!! lol
but I guess it's a good thing so I think inĀ general just involve your emotions when youĀ Ā
speak and learn English is very helpful andĀ effective in improving your English skill inĀ Ā
general ah nice step number five congratulationsĀ and have reached this stage after you have beenĀ Ā
doing step one to four for at least one hour aĀ day for approximately six months well it dependsĀ Ā
on how much time you spend on English each dayĀ so it could be longer than six months or shorterĀ Ā
than six months but anyway if you have reachedĀ this stage you can start incorporating readingĀ Ā
English novels in your English learning routineĀ so just pick one novel that you like and that youĀ Ā
could understand at least 60 percent otherwiseĀ it wouldn't be fun to read and I would recommendĀ Ā
reading fiction over non-fiction like novelsĀ because books in general have very few picturesĀ Ā
right so as a language learner it can be quiteĀ difficult to digest sometimes and and it canĀ Ā
even be a bit boring but usually novels will keepĀ you engaged with the story at least that's what IĀ Ā
find to be quite effective in helping me to stayĀ focused if you are already in or about to joinĀ Ā
an academic environment that would require youĀ to use English I would highly suggest to readĀ Ā
more English books as I find it very helpful inĀ improving my grammar and writing skills I thinkĀ Ā
the foundations I built through Reading EnglishĀ books helped me significantly in writing EnglishĀ Ā
essays and also my graduation thesis back thenĀ for both my bachelor and master program yeahĀ Ā
last but probably the most challenging step
are you ready yes I'm ready so to put yourselfĀ in an environment or situation that will requireĀ Ā
you to use English for example I decided toĀ join a bachelor program that used English asĀ Ā
an instructional language of course you don't needĀ to do a program like this in order to improve yourĀ Ā
English you can for example join an online courseĀ with a subject that you are interested in that isĀ Ā
instructed in English or you can find a languageĀ exchange partner whom you can talk casual thingsĀ Ā
with using English or you could join a MeetupĀ where everyone's are required to speak only inĀ Ā
English or if you are working in your work youĀ can try to seek any opportunities you could toĀ Ā
interact with English speaking clients whetherĀ is via email or video chat or you can do like meĀ Ā
filming videos in English and post it online I findĀ myself improve the fastest when I intentionallyĀ Ā
put myself in this kind of environment it'sĀ like a game! in order to complete your task youĀ Ā
have no choice but to figure out how to applyĀ how to use English while keep on improving itĀ Ā
that's all for today thank you so much forĀ watching if you came all~~~~ this far yayyy I hope thisĀ Ā
video is helpful and remember just remember justĀ to have fun you know enjoy the learning processĀ Ā
and enjoy your life you know for me there's reallyĀ no such things as you have to do this do that inĀ Ā
order to learn a language just do whatever youĀ feel like doing and just play around with it andĀ Ā
just have fun I would say if there's any magicĀ when it comes to language learning it would beĀ Ā
to learn to have fun while learning the language soĀ I wish you best of luck in learning English andĀ Ā
later I'm gonna share a bit about my motivationĀ of learning English if you're interested feelĀ Ā
free to stay with me for a few more minutes andĀ if you're not I'm gonna say goodbye to you hereĀ Ā
goodbye and see you in the next video byeĀ it's always really funny whenever I recallĀ Ā
the reason back then, when I was still a teenager,Ā that motivated me to start learning English soĀ Ā
I remember I was around 12 years old back thenĀ and one day on the streets I saw two strangersĀ Ā
near my neighborhood speaking fluent EnglishĀ and I still remember vividly that at thatĀ Ā
moment I literally couldn't take my eyes off them because that was for me so so so freaking coolĀ Ā
to be able to speak English like that and yes guysĀ that's THE day that I made up my mind that in theĀ Ā
future I'm just gonna be just as cool as themĀ you know like walking on the streets and speakĀ Ā
fluent English so that motivated me to startĀ learning English back then and this simple Ā
"I just want to be cooler by speaking fluent English"Ā goal has brought my English so so so far till todayĀ Ā
so yes that's my motivation back then anywayĀ thank you so much for watching this videoĀ Ā
again and I'll see you oh I just hit myĀ lamp again I'll see you in the next video
bye bye bye I'll give you two hearts bye
