play00:00

hi everybody i hope you're doing super

play00:02

well welcome back to my channel or if

play00:04

you're new here hello my name is jc

play00:06

brady and i

play00:08

rarely make videos i like to do it but i

play00:11

just haven't had like a lot of good

play00:13

ideas

play00:14

and time i guess but there's one i've

play00:17

been wanting to make

play00:18

um a lot of people on campus always come

play00:20

up to me and they're like hey i

play00:21

recognize you from youtube and i think

play00:23

back and i'm like oh

play00:25

i wish i would have added so much more

play00:27

especially as a senior

play00:29

and i'm referring to my berea college

play00:30

pros and cons video that i made freshman

play00:32

year so like i said i'm a senior i feel

play00:35

like i know so much more than i ever

play00:38

could have imagined i can't believe i'm

play00:39

a senior still

play00:41

time has

play00:42

went by extremely slow and also

play00:44

extremely fast at the same time

play00:47

it's been a crazy ride and yeah i

play00:50

thought i would just make an updated

play00:51

break college pros and cons video

play00:53

so for upcoming freshmen and parents and

play00:56

you know everyone concerned

play00:58

i hope this video can help you without

play01:00

further ado let's get right into the

play01:02

video so i'm gonna start out with the

play01:04

cons um specifically the cons that deal

play01:07

with freshman year in particular because

play01:09

for some reason freshmen just have it so

play01:11

rough like there's so many rules and

play01:13

regulations that they have to like

play01:15

follow and they don't get to say in

play01:16

certain things and so yeah i just wanted

play01:18

to start out with that so the first

play01:20

thing that i can think of is

play01:22

classes

play01:24

you don't get to choose your first set

play01:25

of classes

play01:26

now you can come in and be like hey i

play01:28

want to be a

play01:29

biology major and they'll try to put you

play01:32

in like classes that have to do with

play01:33

biology so for example i came in as

play01:35

pre-vet so i was in animal science and

play01:37

chemistry at the same time

play01:39

and that would have not i guess been my

play01:41

first choice it was very hard i had no

play01:44

idea what i was doing as a freshman

play01:46

somehow i made it through but it was

play01:48

very stressful to not be able to have a

play01:50

say that first semester of what my

play01:54

classes were going to be you know i kind

play01:55

of just came in and had to deal with it

play01:57

and i got through it but it's just a

play01:58

little frustrating you know not being

play02:00

able to choose what classes you want to

play02:02

take and then also

play02:04

when registration comes around spring

play02:06

semester you can choose but seniors have

play02:09

top priority

play02:11

so

play02:12

it goes like seniors one day and then

play02:13

juniors the next day and then sophomores

play02:15

and then freshmen are left with like

play02:17

basically whatever's left which isn't a

play02:19

lot you're always going to be able to

play02:20

get into like the

play02:22

freshman only classes of course because

play02:24

it's only freshmen applying but even

play02:26

then it's super stressful it's like the

play02:28

hunger games almost like you're just

play02:29

waiting to put your code in and hoping

play02:31

that you got it before everyone else

play02:33

and i'm sure that's how it is at other

play02:35

schools too um i'm not for sure about

play02:37

the seniors junior sophomores and

play02:39

freshmen but

play02:40

yeah as a freshman you just feel like

play02:42

nothing works out

play02:44

but as a senior now

play02:46

i'm like yeah i love registering first

play02:48

yeah this is awesome so

play02:50

yeah i guess you win some you lose some

play02:52

you also don't get to pick your job

play02:54

freshman year brie college is a labor

play02:56

college like you everyone on campus has

play02:59

a job and it doesn't pay super well

play03:02

there's five pay grades and you can

play03:05

actually look up online what they are i

play03:06

believe they start out at like five

play03:08

dollars an hour so yeah when you come in

play03:10

you don't get to say what job you want

play03:12

now you can submit a resume they can

play03:14

kind of fit you in where you have most

play03:16

experience

play03:17

i did not do that and i wish i would

play03:19

have because i got stuck as a janitor

play03:22

freshman year if you watched my first

play03:23

video you know that so it was really

play03:26

hard

play03:27

um yeah my job was honestly one of the

play03:30

hardest things i had to overcome here it

play03:32

was miserable i didn't have a great time

play03:35

with my boss it was just repetitive

play03:37

cleaning i liked it because i was alone

play03:40

and i could listen to music and call

play03:41

family but it was very isolating and it

play03:43

was just cleaning it felt meaningless

play03:45

and

play03:46

i'm thankful it happened i've definitely

play03:48

grown and realized i can do a lot of

play03:50

things and i'm stronger because of it

play03:51

but it was very hard and i wish i could

play03:53

have had a say in like what i kind of

play03:56

wanted to do you know also as a freshman

play03:58

you are required to take two wellness

play04:00

classes which was kind of weird and felt

play04:03

like a waste of time you just me i can't

play04:05

remember if it's like once a week or

play04:06

twice a week

play04:08

and it's just like this really weird

play04:10

like health

play04:11

class

play04:12

thing i don't know obviously i didn't

play04:14

retain anything because i can't even

play04:16

tell you what it's about

play04:17

i think we just learned about like

play04:19

healthy habits and like the body and

play04:21

all that stuff but um that was really

play04:24

weird as a freshman i definitely did not

play04:26

want to be there and on top of that you

play04:28

are required to take a swim test which

play04:30

is also super random like you have to

play04:33

pass a swim test or you have to be in

play04:35

like beginner swimming classes

play04:37

and i just think that's super weird i

play04:40

passed but it was just like a super

play04:43

weird i didn't understand why it was a

play04:45

thing i think

play04:47

they won i don't

play04:49

yeah i don't even have a theory i don't

play04:52

know

play04:52

also as a freshman you cannot have a car

play04:55

on campus

play04:56

unless you live i think it's like seven

play04:58

hours away then you're allowed but if

play05:01

you just live four hours away like me

play05:03

which is still super far you still can't

play05:05

have a car which is super frustrating at

play05:07

times because like being here all the

play05:09

time 24 7 it gets tiring you know you

play05:12

want to go out and explore

play05:14

and go to different cities but unless

play05:16

you have like upperclassmen friends or

play05:18

take the shuttle that the college offers

play05:20

like you're pretty much here speaking of

play05:22

that berea itself is a super small city

play05:25

like there's no shopping mall there's

play05:27

not a movie theater there's not much

play05:29

like that so we have like a walmart and

play05:32

a few restaurants but besides that

play05:34

you're going to be traveling to richmond

play05:36

or lexington which is like 15 and 45

play05:39

minutes away to really get like a true

play05:41

city experience berea is like a super

play05:43

small city another thing is when you do

play05:46

have a job here you are not allowed to

play05:48

have a side job anywhere else so you

play05:49

can't like work at mcdonald's while

play05:51

working here you're not allowed to have

play05:52

a second job outside of the college

play05:54

which is frustrating at times because

play05:56

it's like i need money and i'm not

play05:58

getting paid a lot here and we're all on

play06:01

labor contracts so it's like you can

play06:03

work 10 hours a week or 15 hours when i

play06:05

know like other jobs i can be working

play06:06

like 25 and getting paid way more but

play06:09

that's just the college's rules i'm sure

play06:11

it's because you know it's super intense

play06:14

here the workload is crazy here and i'll

play06:17

talk about that in a second i'm sure

play06:18

that's why there's caution for it you

play06:20

can get approved to have a secondary job

play06:22

if like you have a reason now you can't

play06:24

have a second job on campus they're

play06:26

called like secondary positions and

play06:27

they're usually like five hour positions

play06:30

so that's a little bit of extra money

play06:32

but you cannot search for a job

play06:33

elsewhere like i mentioned earlier

play06:36

classes are

play06:37

very intense here as a senior i've

play06:39

learned to handle it and i kind of

play06:41

forget like how much it is yeah they

play06:43

were really hard freshman year i didn't

play06:45

have time to really do much i didn't

play06:47

have time to hang with friends i had to

play06:49

choose between like eating and doing

play06:51

homework

play06:52

and it was really hard to get used to i

play06:53

don't think i actually got used to it

play06:55

until maybe the second semester of

play06:57

sophomore year like it was crazy and now

play07:00

i'm thankful for because it does prepare

play07:03

you for like upper graduate things like

play07:05

master school um i maybe will go get my

play07:07

masters and i'm not intimidated by it at

play07:10

all but it is a little you know

play07:12

frustrating for people who don't plan to

play07:14

go do that and it might just feel like a

play07:16

lot but i do think that you learn so

play07:19

much here that you really have to

play07:20

challenge yourself have to like

play07:22

challenge your barriers and it really

play07:24

pushes you to do great things and i am

play07:26

happy for that but it was super hard and

play07:29

a really hard thing to adjust to also

play07:32

attendance is absolutely mandatory for

play07:34

like every class pretty much every class

play07:36

i've had has been like you can miss

play07:38

like two classes but once you miss like

play07:40

a third one you get points taken off of

play07:42

your final grade so i know a lot of

play07:44

colleges i've talked to a lot of my

play07:46

friends and they're like yeah you don't

play07:47

really have to go that's not the case

play07:49

here teachers will absolutely know when

play07:51

you're not in class and they will hold

play07:52

it against you maybe there's a few that

play07:54

won't but in my experience i've never

play07:56

had a teacher like that i've had to go

play07:58

to every single class finally i put this

play08:01

one at the end it's because there might

play08:03

be a change coming next semester next

play08:05

year so originally freshmen could not

play08:08

have like the opposite sex over into

play08:10

their room so like i couldn't have a guy

play08:11

over my guy friends couldn't have me

play08:13

over and that was really frustrating as

play08:15

a freshman it's only first semester but

play08:17

it's like what the heck what are we

play08:19

doing like why can't i have my guy

play08:21

friends over in my room it makes no

play08:22

sense and thankfully this semester um

play08:26

the entire campus voted on changing

play08:28

visitation hopefully by the time you get

play08:30

here i believe it will be changed or

play08:32

altered in some way and my final con and

play08:36

it's gotten i think better since

play08:38

freshman year i don't know the thing is

play08:40

i went from

play08:42

eating meat to being a vegetarian so

play08:43

it's also still kind of hard now but i

play08:46

do notice a lot more diversity in dining

play08:49

but regardless it's not super great most

play08:52

of the time it's hard to like find

play08:54

sustenance sometimes in there it's

play08:57

dining food it's free food so that's

play08:59

awesome but it's not like super tasty

play09:01

sometimes or i don't feel like there is

play09:04

a lot of variety still for me as a

play09:06

vegetarian so then i just think about

play09:07

people that are vegan and i'm like oh my

play09:09

god

play09:10

like they have like one section and if

play09:12

they don't like it then they're screwed

play09:15

for the day basically it's pretty scary

play09:17

but i think they're working on it and i

play09:19

think they're making progress but yeah

play09:20

it's dining food so i think that is all

play09:23

of my cons um

play09:26

i have some that are debatable like they

play09:28

could be probably could be clients so i

play09:30

guess i'll start with those so the first

play09:32

one i thought of was that everyone knows

play09:35

everyone which can be super cool because

play09:38

it's close knit you know and you're

play09:39

always going to run into your friends

play09:41

and people that you know

play09:42

but it can also be a pain when you just

play09:45

want to like go out and you're dressed

play09:47

like super weird because you're just

play09:48

like so cold and you run into like

play09:50

people you know and it's so embarrassing

play09:53

yeah that's not fun um also i feel like

play09:56

everybody knows everybody's business

play09:58

here

play09:59

it's pretty weird i kind of wish it was

play10:01

bigger just so i wouldn't you know have

play10:03

to deal with that but some people love

play10:05

it some people love like a big family

play10:08

um so yeah it's whatever you make of it

play10:10

i guess another thing that's hit or miss

play10:12

is that um to graduate here it's a

play10:15

liberal arts college so you have a lot

play10:17

of like perspectives and required

play10:18

classes

play10:19

so like you have a western history

play10:21

perspective a religion perspective and

play10:24

like all of these perspectives that you

play10:25

have to meet on top of that

play10:27

you have like all your gstr's which is

play10:29

like you basically take like gstr 110

play10:32

your freshman year in gstr 210 uh

play10:35

usually your freshman year two the

play10:36

second semester

play10:38

and then gstr310 is foundations of

play10:40

christianity but then you have to take a

play10:42

religious perspective where

play10:43

understandings of christianity doesn't

play10:45

count so it's a little confusing

play10:47

um i will say i've learned a lot of

play10:49

really cool things because of this

play10:51

perspective the arts perspective was

play10:53

super cool

play10:55

i took appalachian literature for that

play10:57

one and it was so much fun i learned so

play10:59

much about appalachia

play11:00

and i read so much and it was such a

play11:02

good time but like next semester i'm

play11:03

having to take my practical reasoning

play11:05

with quantitative emphasis and

play11:08

i'm nervous because like it's math and

play11:11

i'm a calm major so i'm a little

play11:12

confused but i know it's to like have a

play11:15

well-balanced education

play11:17

so it's another one of those things

play11:19

where it's like oh i don't want to do it

play11:20

but also i'm thankful that i am you know

play11:23

finally this one i put at the end

play11:25

because since kovitz happened they've

play11:28

not been required and i'm not for sure

play11:31

like if we will go back to them

play11:32

convocations used to be required here

play11:35

they were seven a semester and they were

play11:38

so hit or miss i mean it was rough like

play11:40

sometimes you would go in and you'd hear

play11:42

like a super cool one and then sometimes

play11:44

you go in and you'd just be sitting

play11:46

there for an hour listening to someone

play11:48

talk

play11:48

and you can't like be on your phone you

play11:50

can't be reading you can't really do

play11:52

anything during convocation you will

play11:54

like get in trouble and get kicked out

play11:56

it's basically just sitting there for an

play11:58

hour and listening to a speaker and to

play12:00

do seven of them every semester was

play12:02

pretty tiring especially when most of

play12:04

them were super boring there were some

play12:06

really cool ones but i think overall i

play12:09

would have preferred not to have

play12:10

convocations but some people might love

play12:13

them because they learned so much so

play12:15

yeah it's definitely up to the person

play12:17

and finally to the pros we finally made

play12:19

it guys i will say i definitely have a

play12:22

lot more pros and cons first and

play12:24

foremost i think the coolest thing about

play12:26

berea is that it is free tuition so no

play12:29

one here pays tuition which is super

play12:31

cool you have to meet

play12:33

the

play12:34

financial threshold so a lot of us our

play12:36

families didn't make enough or we are

play12:37

first generation college students coming

play12:40

from families so that's really cool to

play12:42

be in like an environment where everyone

play12:43

kind of gets it you know like you never

play12:45

feel

play12:46

like embarrassed or like weird everyone

play12:49

like has been through hard times and i

play12:52

think it's a really cool place to like

play12:54

get your education and like be with

play12:55

people who get it it's also super

play12:57

diverse at least from my viewpoint so i

play12:59

come from a super small town in

play13:01

tennessee so coming here i got to be

play13:04

introduced to like all kinds of

play13:05

religions and cultures you know there's

play13:07

so many just different things going on

play13:09

all the time and it's amazing coming

play13:11

from a small town like i never would

play13:13

have imagined there was so much and i

play13:15

just love learning every day and seeing

play13:16

you know how people live and what their

play13:18

beliefs are it's really cool also so

play13:21

many free resources for students i've

play13:24

only wrote a few and i know i'm missing

play13:26

some because there's so many so the

play13:28

first one that really just helped me so

play13:31

much was counseling so we get free

play13:33

counseling as students and i've had a

play13:35

really good experience

play13:37

i know some people haven't but my

play13:39

therapist

play13:40

she actually left this year which is so

play13:43

sad they really care for students i feel

play13:45

like

play13:46

at least in my experience and really

play13:48

helped me through a lot of hard times

play13:49

that i don't know what i would have done

play13:51

without them so that was really cool

play13:53

there's also like career development

play13:55

which helps you

play13:57

like figure out what major you might

play13:58

like or figure out what job you might

play14:00

want to do after your major and along

play14:03

with them is like the office of

play14:04

internships which helps you like figure

play14:06

out maybe what you want to do for an

play14:08

internship so berea college funds two

play14:11

internships completely that's like

play14:12

living arrangement like food everything

play14:15

which is so cool i've never heard of

play14:17

another college doing that so

play14:19

basically like you are building your

play14:21

resume like crazy here not only do you

play14:24

have jobs on campus all the time but you

play14:26

can do two internships and you leave

play14:28

here with your four-year degree with so

play14:30

much under your belt the hope is that

play14:32

you will just flourish after college

play14:34

which hopefully is what happens they

play14:36

also help you with like preparing for

play14:39

grad school they do mock interviews

play14:41

there's like a funding that helps you

play14:43

get professional clothing

play14:45

so yeah there are so many resources here

play14:47

to help students on top of that there's

play14:49

so many clubs with so much culture and

play14:52

it's just a really cool place like you

play14:54

are just bound to get into something

play14:56

here also there's writing resources in

play14:58

the library that helps you with like

play14:59

papers or getting a paper started i've

play15:02

definitely had to use them a few times

play15:04

because sometimes it's just hard to get

play15:06

started or to finish a paper celts is a

play15:08

really cool program here it's based on

play15:10

helping the community so i know that

play15:12

there's like adopt a grandparent habitat

play15:14

for humanity i believe that they help

play15:16

with that a little bit i did bria

play15:18

buddies which is where i got paired with

play15:20

a kid in the community and i believe

play15:21

like every wednesday we would like eat

play15:24

lunch and play for a little bit so it

play15:25

was really fun and yeah it was a good

play15:27

way to give back to the community since

play15:29

covets happened i'm not for sure if

play15:31

they're doing it but i'm hoping that

play15:32

once you know we get through this

play15:34

pandemic and everything's situated out

play15:36

there we will go back to doing that i

play15:37

hope that you get to experience that all

play15:40

of my professors here have been like

play15:42

outstandingly

play15:44

awesome

play15:45

so many of them have just become my best

play15:47

friends or my leaders and mentors i know

play15:50

like a few professors that my friends

play15:52

have had that have not been good but

play15:53

luckily for me i have had just the most

play15:56

amazing experience with professors in

play15:59

like school i think what helps me a lot

play16:01

is before i apply for classes i go on

play16:03

like rate my professor or things like

play16:05

that and i check out reviews just to

play16:06

make sure that like they seem like a

play16:09

decent person but yeah i have just been

play16:11

blessed with the best professors also we

play16:13

have a gym on campus that's completely

play16:16

free for students

play16:17

we have

play16:18

free yoga sometimes i believe like once

play16:21

a week and this was pre-covered but

play16:23

there were like free yoga classes that

play16:25

you could go to and attend maybe it was

play16:27

two times a week i don't know but they

play16:28

were so awesome and also the local yoga

play16:32

studio would offer yoga for like an

play16:34

extreme discount for students i think i

play16:36

paid like three bucks every time i went

play16:38

to a session so yeah it was super cool

play16:41

also something i really love about berea

play16:43

college is that i feel like it's super

play16:44

environmentally friendly it tries to be

play16:47

so

play16:48

everything at dining is composted and

play16:50

also a lot of things from dining come

play16:52

from our farm which is super awesome i

play16:54

actually live in deep green known as the

play16:56

eco-friendly dorm on campus the office

play16:58

of sustainability which i work there

play17:00

first semester they have all kinds of

play17:02

events to promote sustainable ways of

play17:04

living there's so many ways that you can

play17:06

educate yourself about the environment

play17:08

and ways to live so it's a super cool

play17:10

learning environment another thing i

play17:12

want to mention is that in the dorms we

play17:14

actually have free laundry i know a lot

play17:16

of colleges that don't offer free

play17:18

laundry so yeah that's a pretty cool

play17:19

perk to have as a college student the

play17:21

final one and that doesn't mean it's

play17:23

better or worse than the others but

play17:25

in regards to like healthcare there is a

play17:28

hospital on campus called white house

play17:30

clinic and students get like a sliding

play17:32

scale fee so that helps pay for like all

play17:35

your medicine it gives you like a really

play17:37

big discount or even free sometimes so

play17:39

like we all get like free checkups if

play17:42

you need like certain medications or

play17:43

like a shot or something it can cost a

play17:46

little bit but because of the sliding

play17:47

scalfie it's reduced like dramatically

play17:50

which is pretty cool so i never have to

play17:52

worry about like being sick and having

play17:54

to go to the doctor and having to fork

play17:55

out a lot of money which is a huge

play17:57

stress reliever so that's just a few of

play17:59

the pros and cons i could think of as a

play18:02

senior um i hope it's a little different

play18:05

than my first video i hope you found it

play18:06

super helpful

play18:08

and yeah overall i would say if you're

play18:10

feeling the call to come here you should

play18:12

come here um i'll be here until next

play18:15

december so december 2022. so yeah um if

play18:19

you see me around feel free to say hi i

play18:21

hope to see you around campus and i hope

play18:23

that you have a good time at berea

play18:25

college if you choose to come thanks for

play18:27

watching guys

play18:28

bye
