Transcripts
for months food banks like this one near
berlin have been complaining that demand
for their free or low cost aid is
increasing
some food banks have reported that they
are being forced to turn people away
the problem is likely to get worse as
the covet 19 pandemic the war in ukraine
higher food prices and energy costs are
contributing to a cost of living crisis
and because the country's inflation rate
has been increasing since february
making going to the supermarket a
growing problem for many people
we really look twice before buying
something we ask ourselves if we really
need it or if we can do without it and
wait for a
sale many of the customers at foodbanks
are going there for basic necessities
brand as i'm on my own and it costs more
than two euros it's not possible and
butter and not even sausage which used
to cost 99 cents and now sometimes costs
more than 2 euros
sometimes i go home from the shop with
tears in my eyes because there are a lot
of things i can't afford to buy anymore
state aid is not enough it's not just
one thing it's several things that come
together and affect our pocketbook
but like many supermarkets food banks
are also increasing their prices because
of high energy costs
one food bank says it increased the
price of some of its products by 20 to
50 percent
the food bank which is run by volunteers
is calling on the government to take
action
hence we have been asking the government
for a long time for a law to force
supermarkets to give away their unsold
goods like in france nothing has
so far the government has agreed on two
relief packages including a flat rate
for energy prices for all working people
a one-time payment for welfare
recipients and the 9 euro train ticket
food banks and welfare organizations are
also calling for more steps such as an
increase in the minimum wage and
unemployment benefits as well as
measures to combat precarious work
