Hello, "Health Champions." Today, we're goingĀ to talk about warning signs that you couldĀ Ā
experience before a heart attack. The firstĀ sign is that you would have unusual fatigue,Ā Ā
meaning you're tired for no specific reason.Ā If your heart isn't working all that well,Ā Ā
then you could have what's called edemaāthat'sĀ a very common term related to heart problems,Ā Ā
and it simply means lack of blood. The blood, ofĀ course, carries the nutrients and the oxygen toĀ Ā
all the cells in the body, including the heartĀ and the heart muscle. If the heart isn't gettingĀ Ā
the resources that it needs, then, of course,Ā the heart's going to be struggling because it'sĀ Ā
still asked to perform the same work. But if it'sĀ struggling, then there's going to be less bloodĀ Ā
provided to the body, and if the body doesn'tĀ get the blood and the oxygen, now there's goingĀ Ā
to be less energy produced for all the cellsĀ in the body, and this could lead to fatigue.
But this fatigue is different than justĀ sleepiness; it's more of a physical fatigue whereĀ Ā
you're just tired, especially with exertion. ButĀ in severe cases and later stages, you could alsoĀ Ā
have this fatigue at rest. So at first, it wouldĀ be that you're tired when you try to do something,Ā Ā
but it's not the same thing as being sleepy. Also,Ā this is general and persistent, so it's not justĀ Ā
like one body part now and thenāit's pretty muchĀ all the time, and it affects the whole body.
Another thing that can happen is mild angina,Ā which is chest pain, chest pressure, or chestĀ Ā
discomfort. If you have edema, if there's notĀ oxygen and resources delivered to the heartĀ Ā
and it's struggling, then you can also get thisĀ discomfort and this pressure. And, of course,Ā Ā
both of these are now problems that can progressĀ to a heart attack. These first few symptoms I'mĀ Ā
marking in yellow because they are mild, andĀ that means that they would probably happen aĀ Ā
lot longer before a heart attack. That's key thatĀ we need to understand because a lot of times,Ā Ā
we hear people say something like, "He wasĀ healthy as a horse; he was doing just fine,"Ā Ā
and then he had a heart attack. And that's notĀ true. He wasn't fine. If you have a heart attack,Ā Ā
you were not healthy the day before theĀ heart attack because that's a diseaseĀ Ā
process that takes decades. And some of theseĀ signs are going to show up years and years before,Ā Ā
whereas some of the more severe ones couldĀ be happening maybe just a week before.
Sign number three is shortness of breath. SoĀ again, we have a lack of blood to the body,Ā Ā
and if the body doesn't get oxygen, nowĀ it's going to be looking for more oxygen,Ā Ā
so of course, you're going to be trying toĀ breathe faster, but you're going to feel likeĀ Ā
you can't catch a breath. But there's one moreĀ thing that happens. If the heart is struggling,Ā Ā
if it's not pumping and circulating that bloodĀ properly, now there's going to be a backlog,Ā Ā
and that backlog is going to create an increase inĀ pressure to the lungs in the pulmonary veinsātheĀ Ā
veins, the blood vessels that take the blood fromĀ the heart to the lungs. And if that is backing up,Ā Ā
now there's going to be increased pressure in thisĀ vein, and we're going to have fluid seeping out;Ā Ā
it's going to leak out into theĀ lungs into the tissues there.
And the lungs, of course, have the purpose ofĀ absorbing oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide.Ā Ā
And we need these little compartments, theĀ alveoli of the lungs, to be humid, to be moist,Ā Ā
but not wet. And by the way, if you spreadĀ out the total surface of these little alveoli,Ā Ā
it's about the size of a tennis court,Ā so it's a huge surface. But if we haveĀ Ā
leakage, now there's going to be less of a gasĀ exchange; the surface area is going to be reduced,Ā Ā
and we're not going to have the same capacity toĀ absorb oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide. AndĀ Ā
again, with these mild signs, they may onlyĀ show up in the beginning during exertion,Ā Ā
when you climb stairs or when you do a workoutĀ or something strenuous. But as this progresses,Ā Ā
then these signs could show up even at rest.
Sign number four is that you could be sweatingĀ even though you're at restāyouāre not exertingĀ Ā
yourself, you're not exercising, and yet you'reĀ sweating. And the reason is that when your heartĀ Ā
has stress because it's not getting the resources,Ā now we have a stress response because when theĀ Ā
heart is stressed, that's a significant stress onĀ the body. And we activate the sympathetic nervousĀ Ā
system, and part of that sympathetic nervousĀ system is increased sweating, just like during aĀ Ā
fight-or-flight response. So if you have a bearĀ chasing you, or if you're running, then it'sĀ Ā
normal for that sympathetic activation to happen,Ā but it can also happen if the heart is stressed.
Number five is unexplained weakness,Ā and now we have shifted to orange,Ā Ā
meaning that these are more severe. These areĀ like moderate severity of signs and symptoms,Ā Ā
and this is different than the generalĀ fatigue. This is more of a physical weakness,Ā Ā
and this often can be more localized, so it'sĀ almost like your legs don't carry you or yourĀ Ā
arms won't perform the work. And it could alsoĀ be a sudden onset, and if you get any of theseĀ Ā
signs more suddenly and more severely, then thisĀ could signal that a heart attack is on its way.
Sign number six is nausea and vomiting. AndĀ why could that happen with heart stress? Well,Ā Ā
it's due to the vagus nerve. Vagus means wandererĀ because that nerve is wandering all the way fromĀ Ā
the craniumāit's a cranial nerveāand it goesĀ all the way down into your belly. And it is theĀ Ā
parasympathetic outflow, meaning the oppositeĀ of the fight-flight. And that means it's theĀ Ā
feed-and-breed or the parasympathetic nerve, soĀ it slows things down. So the vagus nerve is theĀ Ā
nerve supply that slows down the heartātheĀ fight-flight speeds it up, and the vagusĀ Ā
slows it down. But when it is slowing down,Ā when we don't have a fight-flight response,Ā Ā
that's also when we're trying to get resources toĀ the gut to digest food. That's when we're gettingĀ Ā
the blood flow to the digestive tract. But if weĀ have a lot of stressāextreme stress on the heart,Ā Ā
for exampleānow we're firing off these nervesĀ with very high signals, high frequencies,Ā Ā
and there can be a little bit of an overflowĀ on these nerves, so the signals get mixed up,Ā Ā
and the heart signals and the gut signals aren'tĀ separated as clearly, so they start affectingĀ Ā
each other. And now, if we have heart stress,Ā the body is reacting with nausea and vomiting.
Sign number seven is that you could get dizzyĀ or lightheaded. And why is that? Because we saidĀ Ā
that when the heart doesn't get the resources, itĀ decreases the output. And the hardest place to getĀ Ā
the blood to flow is, of course, against gravity,Ā and the head is the furthest away from the heartĀ Ā
in terms of gravity. So if we reduce the cardiacĀ output, now the brain can suffer because there'sĀ Ā
less blood flow to the brain. If there's lessĀ blood flow, there's less nutrients, less oxygen,Ā Ā
and we could experience some lightheadedness.Ā So some of these signs are early signs, andĀ Ā
some are medium or moderate signs, and we reallyĀ want to do something as soon as possible becauseĀ Ā
once we get into the severe signs that we'reĀ going to talk about, very often it can be tooĀ Ā
late. It may just be the time that we're havingĀ that heart attack the same day or the next day.
And if we understand that the degenerationĀ of the heart is closely linked to metabolicĀ Ā
disease, to the foods we eat, how we exercise,Ā to the stress we haveāall the different thingsĀ Ā
that I talk about on this channelāwe talk aboutĀ chemical stress, which is environmental toxins andĀ Ā
good food or bad food. We talk about exercise,Ā which is sedentary living versus movement,Ā Ā
and we talk about stress, which is where youĀ have peace of mind versus feeling overwhelmed.Ā Ā

then we can prevent this, or we can restore healthĀ to a degree. And while it's not the only factor,Ā Ā

Sign number eight is severe painĀ or pressure across the chest,Ā Ā
and some people have described this as if anĀ elephant is sitting on themāa crushing chestĀ Ā
pressure. And this is because of significantĀ blockage; there's a significant reduction inĀ Ā
blood flow to the heart, and now the heart isĀ really suffering. And when it gets this severe,Ā Ā
that could be that final warning. So ifĀ you have experienced something like that,Ā Ā
don't ignore it. Make sure that you getĀ checked out and you do something about it.
Sign number nine is also very severe. ItĀ is when you have pain, and it's radiatingĀ Ā
out into the left arm, and you could alsoĀ have this pain in the jaw, in the neck,Ā Ā
or in the shoulders. And the reason thatĀ we get this is called referred pain,Ā Ā
and it's kind of like the vagusāthat nerveĀ signals can get mixed up if they're close toĀ Ā
each other and where they're coming off theĀ spine. And if there is intense stimulation,Ā Ā
such as during a heart crisis, the reasonĀ is that these body parts we talked about,Ā Ā
they have shared sensory pathways with the heart.Ā They all come off the spinal cord somewhere in theĀ Ā
upper thoracic and the lower cervical area. AndĀ this represents significant heart stress. We areĀ Ā
probably going to have some tissue damage becauseĀ we're depriving the heart severely of blood flowĀ Ā
and oxygen, and again, this is a very seriousĀ sign that you absolutely do not want to ignore.
Sign number ten is severe shortness of breath.Ā We mentioned before that you could have someĀ Ā
mild shortness of breath with exercise. Well, whenĀ it gets severe, you're probably going to have itĀ Ā
all the time, even at rest. And now we haveĀ two big problems compounding. We have thisĀ Ā
fluid buildup in the lungs that we talkedĀ about, but now it's getting more severe,Ā Ā
so we have less gas exchange, less oxygen inĀ the blood. But at the same time, we have aĀ Ā
heart that is weaker and weaker, so we reduce thatĀ cardiac output, so it's pumping even less blood,Ā Ā
and there is less oxygen in the blood that isĀ being pumped. So it's like this vicious cycle now,Ā Ā
and we have a severe compromise of ourĀ cardiovascular function, and that heart isĀ Ā
in severe distress. And if we haven't already,Ā we really need to get some help right away.
