Spiritual Ego refers to an inflated sense of self-importance that can arise from spiritual practices or experiences. It's a state where individuals may perceive themselves as superior due to their spiritual insights or practices. In the video, the concept is explored as an unhealthy development where individuals build their identity around their spiritual experiences, leading to a sense of superiority over others. The video discusses how this ego can manifest in different stages of spiritual exploration, from novice to guru.

πŸ’‘Spiritual Narcissism

Spiritual Narcissism is a term used to describe individuals who exhibit narcissistic traits within the context of spirituality. It involves an excessive self-focus and a belief in one's own spiritual superiority. The video discusses this concept as a type of ego that can develop when individuals become overly identified with their spiritual path, leading to a disregard for others and an inflated sense of self-importance.

πŸ’‘Over Intellectualizing

Over Intellectualizing in the context of the video refers to the excessive analysis and discussion of spiritual concepts without embracing the experiential aspect of spirituality. The speaker mentions this as a sign of spiritual ego where individuals get lost in theoretical discussions rather than applying spiritual insights to their daily lives and relationships.

πŸ’‘Dogmatic Beliefs

Dogmatic Beliefs are rigid, unyielding convictions that an individual holds as absolute truth. In the video, these are identified as a sign of spiritual ego where individuals become attached to their spiritual insights to the point of dogmatism, often leading to a lack of openness to other perspectives.

πŸ’‘Messiah Complex

The Messiah Complex, as discussed in the video, refers to a psychological state where an individual believes they have been chosen for a special mission or purpose, often with a sense of divine appointment. This complex can be a sign of spiritual ego, particularly when individuals start to believe they are on a higher plane or have unique insights that others lack.

πŸ’‘Spiritual Righteousness

Spiritual Righteousness is a sense of moral superiority based on one's spiritual beliefs or practices. The video describes this as a sign of spiritual ego where individuals engage in debates to assert their spiritual views as the correct ones, often with a lack of humility and an unwillingness to consider other perspectives.

πŸ’‘Humility

Humility, in the context of the video, is the quality of being modest and respectful toward others, recognizing that one's own knowledge and experiences are not the ultimate measure of truth. The video contrasts humility with spiritual ego, suggesting that individuals with spiritual ego often lack humility and see themselves as superior to others.

πŸ’‘Guru

A Guru, in the video, is a spiritual teacher or guide who has transcended specific methods and can share universal teachings applicable to all situations. However, the term is also used to describe individuals with spiritual ego who may claim to have reached a level of spiritual insight that qualifies them to teach others, potentially leading to a self-proclaimed guru status without genuine humility or universal understanding.

πŸ’‘Yogi

A Yogi, as mentioned in the video, is an individual who has chosen a particular spiritual practice or method, such as a specific type of yoga, and believes in the universal applicability of their chosen path. The video discusses how the yogi stage can be a phase where individuals may develop spiritual ego by proselytizing their chosen method as the ultimate path for others.

πŸ’‘Novice Stage

The Novice Stage is the initial phase of spiritual exploration where individuals have their first profound spiritual insights. The video explains that this stage can be a breeding ground for spiritual ego if individuals begin to see their initial insights as universally applicable and superior to others' experiences.

πŸ’‘Collaborative Experience

A Collaborative Experience, as discussed in the video, is the idea of learning and growing together with others, embracing diversity, and sharing knowledge. The video suggests that instead of rejecting individuals with spiritual ego, it's more beneficial to build bridges and create collaborative experiences that allow for the exchange of insights and the breaking down of barriers between different spiritual communities and the wider world.

[Music]

play00:14

narcissism

play00:18

i'm going to go through the three types

play00:20

of spiritual ego that most people go

play00:22

through when they develop this

play00:24

unhealthy type of ego i'm then going to

play00:27

share

play00:27

15 key signs to look out for so you can

play00:30

identify if someone's going through

play00:31

spiritual ego around you or if you're

play00:33

going through spiritual ego

play00:35

finally i'm going to share at the very

play00:36

end of this video exactly what to do if

play00:39

you've got someone in your life that has

play00:40

spiritual ego now

play00:41

the answer is not to shut them out it's

play00:43

not to draw your boundaries with them

play00:45

it's going to be something very

play00:46

different and it's worth sticking around

play00:48

to find out

play00:49

what it is before i get into the video a

play00:52

very

play00:52

quick note i'm sharing this because i'm

play00:54

currently on kopanyang

play00:56

an island in thailand and there's a huge

play00:58

spiritual community of people and then

play01:00

the other day i met a

play01:02

new friend someone who's been living

play01:03

here for three years and her first

play01:05

question to me was you're not a yoga

play01:07

person

play01:08

are you and she was worried that i was

play01:10

one of those spiritual seekers on the

play01:12

island part of the community and my

play01:13

friend

play01:14

told me that when she meets yoga people

play01:16

on the island she feels like

play01:18

in general the yoga people are very

play01:20

selfish people that are very wrapped up

play01:22

in the story they tell

play01:24

about themselves and that got me

play01:26

thinking about spiritual ego

play01:28

and the fact that i used to have a very

play01:31

unhealthy spiritual ego so this video

play01:34

in part is kind of a confession of mine

play01:37

i feel a little guilty being here in

play01:39

copanyang and seeing spiritual ego

play01:41

everywhere so i want to share this video

play01:43

to go a little deeper so please know

play01:45

that this is a self-exploration as i go

play01:47

through

play01:48

all of these different signs of

play01:50

spiritual ego now the other part of the

play01:51

video

play01:52

is that my friend chira the one who i

play01:54

had this great conversation with she's

play01:56

on her way here now

play01:57

and she's a local tour guide she's going

play01:58

to take me to some really unusual parts

play02:01

of kopanyang so i'm going to take you

play02:03

with me so you get to see the beautiful

play02:05

parts of propanyang and as i go through

play02:06

this journey i'm going to share the key

play02:08

parts of this video

play02:09

as we explore spiritual ego together so

play02:12

to get this video

play02:12

started i first want to explain what it

play02:15

means to have

play02:17

a spiritual ego so spirituality is

play02:20

really the pursuit

play02:21

of knowledge relating to something

play02:24

outside the material world

play02:26

or outside the five senses that we've

play02:28

got so there's some sort of knowledge of

play02:30

something outside all of that and i

play02:34

think when you're on a spiritual path

play02:35

you're seeking to pursue a life where

play02:37

you're incorporating

play02:38

a set of practices as well as a set of

play02:41

concepts

play02:42

related to whatever you discover about

play02:44

this non-material

play02:46

world and i think at some level

play02:48

everyone's spiritual

play02:50

in that we're all aware of something

play02:51

infinite something outside ourselves

play02:53

that there's a whole lot more to life

play02:54

than what we can

play02:56

see touch feel smell and so on so that's

play02:58

what spirituality is in pursuing a

play03:00

spiritual life now when you've got

play03:01

spiritual ego or you're becoming a

play03:04

spiritual narcissist

play03:05

that's when you start to identify

play03:09

who you are in relationship with the

play03:11

spiritual path you're on so usually

play03:14

someone has arrived at some sort of an

play03:17

aha moment

play03:18

they've had some sort of transcendental

play03:20

experience

play03:22

they may have met someone very profound

play03:24

and wise who've shared something

play03:26

that's totally opened up their eyes to

play03:29

something new for the very first time

play03:30

or it could be one of those first

play03:32

experiences you can have doing something

play03:34

like ayahuasca

play03:35

or some sort of retreat or kundalini

play03:38

yoga or

play03:39

breath work so you have this huge rush

play03:41

this huge insight now

play03:42

that's a pretty normal thing it's a

play03:44

pretty wonderful thing for us all to

play03:46

chase to experience but the problem is

play03:49

when you build an identity around that

play03:51

experience that you've got

play03:52

and when you start to see yourself as

play03:54

superior to

play03:56

others for having had that experience or

play03:59

having had

play04:00

that insight so it's the superiority

play04:02

combined with building it around your

play04:04

identity

play04:06

that involves having a spiritual ego and

play04:08

becoming a spiritual

play04:10

narcissist that's what having a

play04:11

spiritual ego means now i'm gonna go a

play04:14

little bit deeper

play04:15

and explain the three types of spiritual

play04:18

ego that i see most people kind of

play04:21

transitioning through

play04:22

as they build this stock of spiritual

play04:26

insights but first cheera is going to

play04:29

take us a little deeper into copanyang

play04:33

oh where are you taking us

play04:42

[Music]

play04:54

[Music]

play04:59

so in just a moment i'm going to go

play05:01

through the 15

play05:03

signs that someone's got a spiritual ego

play05:07

first i want to explain the three types

play05:09

of spiritual ego that people pass

play05:11

through

play05:12

so the first type is when you're going

play05:15

through the novice stage of spiritual

play05:18

exploration and this is where you have

play05:20

that first

play05:21

insight and you may have learned

play05:24

something really profound from

play05:26

one of the spiritual teachers like

play05:28

eckhart tolle or

play05:30

osho or something like that and these

play05:32

spiritual gurus have this real knack for

play05:35

managing to

play05:36

universalize what they're teaching so

play05:39

that

play05:40

you feel like it's particularly relevant

play05:42

for you and it really describes what

play05:44

you're going through and that's because

play05:45

it does there's something very genuine

play05:46

in these teachings

play05:48

but when you first have that insight

play05:49

then you think that what you're going

play05:51

through

play05:52

applies to everyone else around you but

play05:55

you've arrived at this

play05:56

particular place because you've figured

play05:59

this out so that's the novice stage when

play06:01

you first

play06:01

started the next stage is the yogi stage

play06:04

and these are the people

play06:06

who they've chosen a method or they've

play06:08

chosen a particular approach and it

play06:10

could be yoga it could be one of the

play06:11

types of yoga could be many different

play06:14

things

play06:14

and then you realize there's a whole

play06:16

system of teaching behind this one

play06:18

insight and as you

play06:19

go down the rabbit hole of these

play06:21

learnings you realize that more and more

play06:23

of these insights apply to you and what

play06:25

you're going through therefore it must

play06:26

apply to other people

play06:28

so the yogi often goes around thinking

play06:30

that particular method or system

play06:32

is what needs to be shared with other

play06:33

people so they start proselytizing

play06:35

which means they want to spread the word

play06:37

and bring people into their

play06:39

movement and then the third stage is the

play06:42

guru stage and this is where someone

play06:44

transcends the method

play06:46

and can see through the method and knows

play06:48

how

play06:49

to share universal teaching so they

play06:51

apply

play06:52

in every circumstance and when someone

play06:54

reaches that

play06:55

guru stage often they're a

play06:58

self-proclaimed

play06:59

guru and they realize they've got this

play07:01

special ability

play07:03

to share their teachings in a universal

play07:05

way to make it relevant to everyone and

play07:07

everything and every experience

play07:08

happening

play07:09

around you and there's a special kind of

play07:12

spiritual ego

play07:13

that the self-proclaimed gurus have

play07:15

because they're often extremely clever

play07:17

they know

play07:18

how to convince you that what they're

play07:20

sharing is perfect for you in every

play07:22

situation

play07:23

and they've reached that guru level so

play07:24

those are the three stages

play07:26

that people often pass through that we

play07:28

often pass through in my own case

play07:30

i definitely have entered the yogi stage

play07:33

many different times when i've found the

play07:35

answer through some sort of method

play07:37

and i've wanted to spread the word and

play07:39

i've done that through love through

play07:41

wanting to share through wanting other

play07:43

people to experience this too so

play07:45

it definitely comes from a really good

play07:47

place i completely understand it

play07:49

although i think we need to be very

play07:50

careful of gurus the gurus who arrive at

play07:52

that place because they've got the

play07:53

ability to see through this

play07:55

and yet they continue seeing themselves

play07:57

as a guru

play07:58

and wanting to convince other people of

play08:00

what they're teaching

play08:01

so i was out with the cheer the other

play08:03

day and you were telling me about

play08:06

the yoga people here which of course is

play08:08

we respect the yoga people

play08:10

but one observation you had that was

play08:13

very profound was how selfish they are

play08:15

yeah i feel that i think they're a

play08:18

little bit selfish about it

play08:20

and then what i love when you said they

play08:22

spend so much time focusing on

play08:24

self-development and spirituality but

play08:26

then you ask them sometimes well what

play08:28

about actually helping other people

play08:29

doing something to contribute

play08:31

to the community and you feel that

play08:34

sometimes they're a little too focused

play08:35

on self to

play08:36

to focus on other people they're just

play08:38

like when i ask them what do you

play08:40

think or what should we do about it it's

play08:41

like why do we have to give a crap

play08:44

you said that to me yeah just like as

play08:46

long as yourself happy

play08:48

you don't have to care about others and

play08:50

it's interesting because then as we're

play08:51

walking along the beach here

play08:53

and we came to you know shoot this uh

play08:55

film that i'm creating about spiritual

play08:56

ego and

play08:58

you know i'm focused on what i'm trying

play09:00

to achieve and cheer us here as a tour

play09:01

guide like trying to make sure it's a

play09:03

good experience but then suddenly chiro

play09:05

just stopped everything

play09:06

dropped everything and started picking

play09:08

up the trash along the beach because you

play09:10

couldn't just

play09:11

let it go and so for me that's a

play09:13

wonderful example of

play09:14

spirituality in action in terms of

play09:17

actually

play09:19

contributing to other people around you

play09:21

even when you can't solve the whole

play09:22

problem the problem's much bigger than

play09:24

you but you still want to

play09:25

make a small difference if you're able

play09:27

to well yeah

play09:29

supposed to be like that yeah i'm going

play09:31

to go through now the 15

play09:33

signs of spiritual ego to look out for

play09:36

in yourself

play09:37

or in people around you the first sign

play09:40

is that you're over intellectualizing

play09:43

spirituality now

play09:44

this was the big mistake that i made i

play09:47

always wanted to analyze everything

play09:48

talk about it find fellow spiritual

play09:51

seekers get into

play09:52

really long and deep conversations about

play09:54

it but then i learnt about spirituality

play09:56

that it's so much more an experience

play09:59

of life of relationships with others

play10:01

that i realized that over

play10:02

intellectualizing it

play10:04

was taking me away from that fundamental

play10:06

experience the second key sign of

play10:08

spiritual ego

play10:09

is judging others as more or less

play10:12

advanced

play10:13

than you this is where the superiority

play10:15

kicks in and it's where

play10:17

the person that's spiritual narcissist

play10:19

is starting to think that they're better

play10:20

than others the third sign is having

play10:22

dogmatic beliefs and this is where you

play10:24

start to believe in the fundamental

play10:26

truths that you're experiencing and you

play10:28

hold them as rigid

play10:29

axioms in your understanding of yourself

play10:32

and the world the next sign is having a

play10:34

messiah complex now i've encountered a

play10:36

number of people in the spiritual world

play10:38

that especially when they start to

play10:40

embrace psychedelics they get whispers

play10:42

from gods that tell them certain things

play10:44

and they start to believe that they are

play10:46

a god walking on earth now of course at

play10:49

some level we're all gods i can

play10:50

understand that

play10:51

we've all got the presence of god within

play10:53

but the problem is when you translate

play10:56

that spiritual experience into your

play10:58

relationships with others with society

play11:00

the fifth sign

play11:01

is where you get stuck in the trap of

play11:03

always trying to think

play11:05

positively i got really stuck in this

play11:07

when i used to embrace the law of

play11:08

attraction and

play11:09

i thought that it was really important

play11:11

that spiritual people were always

play11:13

a high vibration problem was i was

play11:15

ignoring a lot of the fundamental

play11:17

negative emotions like

play11:18

fear frustration insecurity and then i

play11:21

didn't realize you can actually get a

play11:22

lot of personal power from those

play11:23

emotions the next and related sign of

play11:26

spiritual ego is when you're trying to

play11:28

be a guru to other people when you think

play11:31

that you've found the answer

play11:32

particularly happens with people with

play11:34

the messiah complex and you want to

play11:35

spread these fundamental truths

play11:37

to everyone around you another sign of

play11:39

spiritual ego is when you believe you've

play11:41

figured it all

play11:42

out when your current state of knowledge

play11:45

you believe is at some sort of

play11:46

final or absolute level another sign of

play11:49

spiritual ego is spiritual righteousness

play11:52

this is a good sign and i used to do

play11:53

this all the time it is when you engage

play11:55

in spiritual

play11:56

debates now it's all very well to have

play11:58

spiritual dialogues where two people are

play12:00

mutually on the search for truth

play12:02

together where they're supporting each

play12:04

other in that quest but a debate

play12:05

usually involves one person being right

play12:08

and the other person being wrong

play12:10

and spiritual ego is often present in

play12:12

people who are always in that debate

play12:14

they always think that they're right

play12:15

and they want to overpower other people

play12:18

around them

play12:18

another sign is lacking genuine

play12:20

curiosity about the world around you you

play12:23

lack genuine curiosity because you feel

play12:24

like you've found the answer you don't

play12:26

need to learn

play12:27

anything new another sign of

play12:30

spirituality is lacking

play12:34

humility thinking you're better than

play12:35

people around you often people with

play12:37

spiritual ego

play12:38

are lacking compassion because they see

play12:40

themselves as so separate with their

play12:42

experiences

play12:42

they think they've arrived at something

play12:44

they lack compassion for people because

play12:45

they just think those other people

play12:47

haven't managed to attain

play12:48

their level of spiritual greatness a big

play12:50

sign of spiritual ego

play12:52

is when you stop living your life so

play12:55

that you can pursue

play12:56

spiritual knowledge it often happens in

play12:58

retreat type environments or here in

play13:00

copenhagen when there's a yoga studio or

play13:03

retreat

play13:04

pretty much everywhere around this

play13:06

island and people kind of want to

play13:07

withdraw from society from where they're

play13:09

from they can actually get here and find

play13:11

enlightenment

play13:12

find the truth they don't realize

play13:13

they're actually withdrawing from the

play13:15

world around them another sign of

play13:17

spiritual ego

play13:18

is that you've become a narcissist so

play13:20

all you can think about is yourself

play13:22

all you can talk about is your own story

play13:24

of what brings you here

play13:26

and you really lose interest in other

play13:27

people around you and that's really the

play13:29

final sign of

play13:30

spiritual ego is when you've completely

play13:33

lost interest

play13:34

in others and you're only focused on

play13:35

yourself where are we going now

play13:37

we go to very nice place there

play13:41

everywhere is nice here with shira says

play13:43

nice nice and then when we get there

play13:46

i'm going to share with you exactly what

play13:48

to do when

play13:49

you encounter people with spiritual ego

play13:51

many times i

play13:52

like to go on facebook events and then

play13:55

research for what's going on in koppen i

play13:58

saw many people did

play14:00

do like trash heroes they're going to

play14:02

pick up the trash

play14:03

on a beach or i do something useful or

play14:06

food donation or adult cat or dog but i

play14:10

have not seen many

play14:11

yoga communities they do something like

play14:13

that they mostly just

play14:14

yoga people meet up with yoga people do

play14:17

something about yoga things too

play14:19

people go to us for free namaste

play14:24

can i have some waters can i have some

play14:28

fruit

play14:31

[Music]

play14:34

we're heading up to the final

play14:36

destination of this wonderful tour

play14:39

it's the secret mountain

play14:47

[Music]

play14:56

um

play14:58

we can't divorce our spirituality from

play15:01

the relationships we have with each

play15:03

other

play15:04

with society with the whole world around

play15:07

us and for me

play15:08

it's such a key point that we live in a

play15:10

world where we've got the opportunity

play15:12

to learn from each other to grow

play15:14

together to have a collaborative

play15:16

experience to

play15:17

celebrate our diversity now i said at

play15:19

the start i'm going to share what i

play15:21

think

play15:21

you should do if you have someone with a

play15:23

spiritual ego in your life

play15:25

or if you're someone that may be

play15:27

developing a spiritual

play15:29

ego i think it's very tempting to reject

play15:32

that person

play15:33

to shut off and to draw your boundaries

play15:35

and to try to associate with people

play15:37

that are on a similar pursuit of meaning

play15:39

as what you're

play15:40

on but i don't think that's the best

play15:42

thing to do in the face

play15:44

of people with spiritual ego

play15:47

in your life ultimately i think that the

play15:49

spiritual communities that

play15:51

are developing all around the world in

play15:53

places like kopanyang

play15:55

are doing wonderful work there's kernels

play15:57

of truths being shared and experienced

play16:00

by these people we want to build bridges

play16:03

between these communities

play16:05

and the wider world outside so that

play16:08

whatever's happening in that community

play16:10

we can learn from and embrace and

play16:12

whatever's happening in the real world

play16:14

also can be shared inside the spiritual

play16:17

community so we can

play16:18

collapse this distinction between the

play16:20

spiritual seekers and

play16:22

everyday people so that we can realize

play16:23

that ultimately

play16:25

we're all on a search for meaning we're

play16:27

all spiritual at a fundamental level we

play16:29

just

play16:30

experience it in different ways we have

play16:32

different language

play16:33

to share how we're experiencing it and i

play16:36

think really that

play16:37

we need to break these boundaries

play16:39

between people and start to

play16:41

build much more effective knowledge

play16:43

exchanges

play16:44

in the world around us thanks so much

play16:46

play16:48

a lot more to share about this topic and
