Transcripts
hi everyone welcome to five code
shakespeare othello act one what i do in
this series is i first give you a
nutshell overview of the important plot
events of each scene and then we dive
deeply into the text of each scene and
pull out five quotes that i think are
useful to help you understand the plays
character and themes if you do find this
video useful please consider liking and
subscribing and making a small donation
to my patreon account the scene opens
with rodrigo and iago rodrigo is is
crazily pathologically in love with
desdemona and he's been paying iago to
help him win uh desdemona's hand of
course the iago's been aligned to him
the whole time and as the scene as the
scene opens rodrigo is angry with iago
rodrigo accuses iago of not dealing
fairly with him rodrigo has been paying
iago to help him win desdemona but iago
didn't tell him that she recently eloped
with othello so we hear at the very very
beginning we hear that othello and
desdemona are married somewhat secretly
iago convinces rodrigo that he hates
that that don't worry i hate othello as
much as you do and i hate by the way
this guy named cassio and that iago does
have a plan for othello's downfall so
just be patient mr rodrigo keep giving
me your money and you'll get your
testimonia so they move on to
brabantio's home out and out from the
street they they they convince well from
the street iago and rodrigo awakened
desdemona's father babantio to tell him
that his daughter has eloped so they're
causing mischief rate from the beginning
iago's plan is to incense berbantio
against othello and try to get othello
arrested outraged of course berbantio
gathers officers and sets off two
arrests othello who he accuses of
charming with with witchcraft his
daughter desdemona every villain must
have a motivation otherwise they're a
cartoonish ridiculous kind of villain
and that's not what iago is iago is a
super villain
but he has real human reasons for doing
what he's doing resentment narcissism
psychopathology a grandiose sense of
self these are all established very very
early in the story
iago has to prove to rodrigo that iago
is not buddy buddy with othello that
rodrigo is that that iago is indeed
working with rodrigo to try to help
rodrigo get desdemona
rodriguez angry that that iago didn't
tell him that desdemona and othello were
married as i mentioned so iago says no
no no no i hate them i hate him i hate
othello very very much because he
overlooked me for the position of
lieutenantship and he gave the
lieutenant ship to michael cassio who
didn't deserve it because michael cassio
is a mere scholar he's a mere
he's a mere academic he's not a true
soldier so there's the resentment coming
out so here's a good quote for this
michael cassio is loving in his own
pride and purposes do you see the
resentment there do you see the he's he
hates this michael cassio guy he sees
him as a superior he's a sour iago's a
sour little man is what he is as loving
his own pride and purposes he evades the
questioners he invades his interviewers
for the for the for the job position uh
he he talks around them he talks a big
talk he doesn't walk a good walk like me
i'm a soldier and with a bombast
circumstance with circumlocution by
using fancy words horribly stuffed with
words of war words words words not
action that's how he won his position
here's another good quote that talks to
the same thing
he is mere prattle without practice is
all his soldiership but he sir had the
job position and not me
do you see so there's the resentment
there's a sense of narcissism in there
as well like i should have been all this
resontimo is a major theme in the entire
play so go have a look at my theme video
and that'll talk a little bit more of
that i think a grandiose sense of self
is here as well um i should have gotten
it i should have gotten it and and
everything is everybody else's fault the
fact that i didn't get it is not my
fault is everybody else's fault that's
that's kind of uh
an aspect of psychopathology as well
appearance versus reality here um he he
he's trying to present himself that's a
major theme in a lot of shakespeare's
work appearance versus reality but he's
trying to present himself in a certain
light to rodrigo so right from the
beginning we see that we don't we don't
trust him here we don't we we know that
he's he's a liar and he's and and he's
presenting a service that does not
reflect the reality of who he really is
after establishing iago's character
shakespeare does the same for rodrigo um
rodrigo after listening to iago's speech
says uh he marvels at at uh at othello's
good luck to to have married testimony
says what a full fortune does the thick
lips owe if he can carry it thus how did
he pull this off how did he marry
such a such a prize as desdemona who was
rich noble and also beautiful and
gracious and everything else
um well obviously he's revealed here as
as a as a racist he's also revealed
coming up here we'll see how he's a
resentful little bitter man
more pathetic than iago at least iago's
he's resentful and bitter and nasty and
sour but he's also he's actually got
some courage rodrigo doesn't have the
courage to you know i don't know it
doesn't redeem iago's uh of viciousness
but but there it is
um
it establishes also the the the very
very important theme of the other now i
discussed this in my other theme video
so go have a look at that but all
throughout you can't avoid racism of
course you can't avoid the other
othello is the other he's in venice and
he's from africa
and and he is the other and he's
viciously attacked here as being
unworthy of of such a venetian prize as
the princess desdemona remember your
lessons on characterization it's not
always what the character themselves say
or do it's very often what other
characters say about a character that
reveals the character of of of a
character so they iago and rodrigo are
underneath berbanto bermano is a
desdemona's father and they're
underneath uh his balcony they're
screaming up at him to wake up wake up
wake up because your daughter's been
stolen away berbantia comes to the door
comes to the window uh and he sees
rodrigo
and he says torrid we go dude dude i
have charged thee not to haunt my doors
would you just leave my daughter alone
in honest plainness thou hast heard me
say my daughter is not for thee so again
shakespeare there's no mistakes in
shakespeare well
more or less no mistakes in shakespeare
he's not he's not perfect but here we
see again this detail is put in there
purposely to establish rodrigo as a kind
of a simp a kind of a loser uh we are
meant right from the beginning of this
play to have zero respect for this guy
rodrigo who almost he's so pathetic he
almost deserves uh the the the abuse
that he gets the manipulation he gets
from iago
the character development then turns its
focus back to iago remember they're
trying to incense berbantio against
othello and they're trying to make him
angry and iago uses the crudest language
imaginable he's revealed here as being
low
bass and vulgar uh the themes of excess
versus moderation uh love as as mere
animalistic lust that's that's iago's
world view uh dionyson versus apollonian
if you go watch back and watch my theme
video you'll see uh that that in this
play there is the juxtaposition of
nobility versus baseness lowness this is
the god dionysus it's a personification
of the base the low energies of of of
who we are as humans and here are the
more noble uh intellectual faculties and
the more graceful faculties of what it
means to be human neither of which on
its own is is pure evil uh but we what
shakespeare has argued in many many
different plays is that we need some
kind of harmony in in in othello these
forces are in harmony and in desdemona
as well but when
when one when there's more of one when
there's too much of one and not enough
of the other if they're unbalanced then
you get into the theme of excess and
moderation passion is fine passion is
lovely passion is dionysian who doesn't
want to who wants to live without
passion but if there's too much of it
and there's only that then then you're
then you're and then you're an animal
okay so uh to convince to make barbato
angry he uses very crude language iago
does he says you'll have your daughter
covered with a barbary horse so he's
calling he's calling uh um othello a a a
barbary horse from barbary is is a
territory
in the east okay again it's it's it's
not european it's not venetian it's it's
it's other uh to go back to that theme
uh we see here that his language iago's
language is revealing his character okay
pay attention to that again go watch my
theme video and talk more about that um
again he screams up at berbanteo he says
i am one sir that comes to tell you your
daughter and the more are now making the
beast with two backs well that's
lovemaking
he describes it as the beast with two
backs so the images of course that that
the lovers are united and they're not
united in in the harmony in the marriage
of true minds they're they're united as
as mere beasts so that's that's iago um
being being as crude as you possibly can
he's got zero of the apollonian in him
he's all lower dionysian energy crude
crude guy
um now
what's happening in the scene because
you've watched the movie is that iago is
is talking over rodrigo and when when
rodrigo finally has a chance to talk
he's much more civilized in his talk but
he still falls into the racism trap the
lascivious more lascivious means he's uh
he's he's overly
overly sexual a sexualized creature more
than a true venetian who is more
civilized so again there's the framing
the the the assumption that the more
that the non-venetian is uh is cruder
and more uh animalistic than than a true
venetian iago's plan works a charm he's
a charming psychopath
berbanto calls for a light and he's
going to check out to see whether
desdemona is at home or not and sure
enough she's not
uh iago skedaddles he says i have to go
and talk and be with othello because
there's something going on with the
cypress war so he leaves and remember
bermanto didn't know that iago was there
to begin with because iago was was
pretending to be berbantio was iago was
pretending to be rodrigo when he was
speaking so berbanto enters and a little
bit of his characters revealed here
there's a little bit more revealed later
on but he's a minor character but this
but but there's there's some interesting
things to find out about him so he finds
out that desdemona is gone and he's
totally heartbroken he's he's oh she
deceives me past thought
it's beyond thought it's
incomprehensible to him that his
daughter could have could have could
have left him so in terms of character
development we see him here
there's a couple of options most
obviously he's a possessive father he's
got his daughter locked up in in the
house where she should be and she
escaped and he's angry so fair enough
he's he's he's uh
he's possessive uh we can also think of
it well in terms of of love generally uh
love as ownership that is a world view
that maybe we can ascribe to brabanto as
part of his character uh opposite to
that however or or count a counter
argument to that would be uh enmeshment
and i talked about this my previous
video as well on character uh enmeshment
is is is is a form of is a corrupted
form of of love between a parent and a
child where their their their lives are
too closely
connected they're not they don't have
their separate realms there's the
childhood realm the young person realm
and the adult realm and they should be
separate but if if a parent and a child
are too close either the male or the
female with the male or the female child
uh there can be something called the
measurement where where the lives are
too intertwined and they can't survive
without each other uh the adult can't
survive without the child and so the
child ends up getting smothered so is
this excessive love that goes back to
the theme of excess uh versus moderation
uh we can also talk about this in uh in
terms of the theme of alienation that
was one of the major themes alienation
and separation he here has been
separated from his worldview
a shattered worldview the the view of
filial piety that's the duty that a
child owes to a father has been
shattered and the the the notion of of
of proper race relations has been
shattered as well
interestingly very interestingly we
learn in the next scene uh um that
burbanto actually really really loved
othello uh they were buddies uh uh
robento kept you know inviting uh
othello to his home to talk about his
adventures so
but
uh
there's a line
uh yeah you can be friendly with with
the other you can be friendly with them
you can invite them in you can have a
cup of tea with them but they're not
allowed to marry your daughter they're
not allowed to marry into your family
because they are other in-group outgroup
that's that's i discussed that in my
other in in my other video as well on
theme so a little bit of interesting uh
character development for berbanto again
he's not a cartoon character never when
you approach shakespeare don't think of
him as being the evil father okay or or
or or the evil mother or whatever it is
or iago being the pure villain all right
there's always it's usually much more
complicated than that
um he is revealed as a racist here for
sure
uh he he complains he says oh my
goodness how is this possible how is
this possible or rodrigo is there not
some charms by which the property of
youth and maidhood may be abused so he
he has to it's inconceivable to him that
that desdemona would betray him and go
with a with a with a foreigner like uh
like like othello so he says there must
be something else going on so here's the
other in as well uh the mysterious
magical other okay anything that is not
in our in group and familiar must be
weird and strange and dangerous and so
there's that assumption as well that
we've seen before uh here's another view
of love in my theme video i talked about
the various views of love that
shakespeare explores in this play most
of them are negative in this particular
play they're not always negative
shakespeare has a very lovely balanced
humane uh view of what true love is but
here there's there's a love is a kind of
magic a kind of a dangerous spell that
can be cast over someone and it's not
wrong because love love is a kind of
spell and it is very very potentially
very very dangerous too
okay so
he says so iago's trick has worked he
calls on rodrigo let's go i'm going to
get some guards and we're going to go
arrest othello
and that was five quote shakespeare
othello act one scene one come back for
my next video and we'll have a look at
act one scene two thanks for watching
