we we became aware of the fact that uh
they were struggling to get the funding
to uh come and compete in the AFL
International cup and so we thought that
would be a real shame um it fits in with
our overall broader strategy to engage
uh with China so we thought it' be a
really nice thing to be able to bring
them out and uh get behind
them hi so the team uh went from guango
which is in southern China by bus to
Hong Kong and then they had a 9 and 1
half hour flight from Hong Kong to
Adelaide they arrived this morning Adela
time 10 5 in the morning so a few the
boys a bit weary and a bit tired I think
excitement got got the better of them
and uh I don't think they slept

boys well every 3 years the AFL run the
international cup uh this year there's
23 countries uh competing um over the
next 3 weeks uh in Melbourne it's just
an opportunity for non-traditional AFL
countries to come together and uh
compete uh get a better sense of
Australia uh get a sense of um what the
game's all about over here and hopefully
through that we'll start to see more and
more International Players introduced to
the game and then hopefully the game can
be introduced to those countries taking
nothing away from the uh two squads that
were uh at International cup 2008
International Cup 2011 I think this is
our best Squad so far um in in the
history of uh China football the feeling
inside the group is a is a cautious uh
optimism and I really look for as a
coach um Improvement on the last two two
cups that we've been and with the
support that we've had so far from Port
alide um I think that really has given
us a good ground to to have a fantastic
tournament

with Team China um we see it as more
than just a a once-off tournament um you
we would like to think that uh we could
be playing exhibition games against team
China uh within 12 months you you can
imagine that our sesta Aboriginal
Academy side for example touring uh
China uh would be a fantastic
advertisement for the game people in
China love sport potential is huge it's
a sport that um that really has has legs
in China everyone that I've seen and and
I've come in contact with that had no
contact with football once they see
football play football touch football
that there's not one person that has a
negative VI view on it and everyone's
really um into football once they get to
know
it we've already had discussions with uh
with port adade in regards to how we're
going to um go forward from here and all
indications are that you know we we we
don't want this to be a oneoff thing we
want there to be a very healthy
relationship between China football as
well as Port Adelaide um we looking to
really nurture a relationship um an
annual relationship where we can have
interactions together on an annual basis
we know that China is going to become a
really serious priority for the AFL uh
I'm in discussions with uh the AFL
executive about the possibility of
playing a game in in China um we're
certainly very very very keen on that
idea uh and we've been very uh very
enthused by the reaction we've got from
the
