5 Mistakes KDP Beginners Make - Amazon Low Content Publishing
Summary
Q & A

Highlights
The five common mistakes beginner KDP publishers make that can stop them from making sales or get their account terminated.
Mistake 1: Not creating enough books. Publishing books is a numbers game, and you need to create a large number of books to increase your chances of success.
Mistake 2: Picking a very competitive niche. Start with less competitive niches like log books and notebooks to gain experience before moving to more competitive niches.
Mistake 3: Creating books that are too complicated. Start with simple books like lined notebooks and journals to learn the creation and publishing process before moving to more complex books.
Mistake 4: Trademark infringement. Avoid using ideas or intellectual property that belongs to someone else, as this can lead to account termination or legal issues.
Mistake 5: Getting lost in the weeds. Avoid getting caught up in complex business structures and planning before creating and publishing your first book.
Advice: Keep it simple by setting up your KDP account, creating your first book, and publishing it. Repeat the creation and publishing process before considering more complex business structures.
The principle of the 80/20 rule often applies, where a small number of books will bring in the majority of your income.
Running an Amazon ad campaign with a small budget in a competitive niche is unlikely to work without having the skills to create books that will sell.
Start with simple books like log books, which are easier to create, have less competition, and can lead to early sales, which is encouraging for beginners.
When creating more complex books, you need to consider factors like bleed, margins, and using the right software, which can be challenging for beginners.
Trademark infringement can occur not only with images but also with words and phrases, so it's important to do a trademark search on the USPTO and WIPO websites.
Avoid getting lost in the weeds by setting up complex business structures, marketing campaigns, and brands before creating a product to sell.
Getting professional financial advice is recommended once you have products to sell and are making sales, not before creating your first book.
For most people, simply declaring their income on their tax return may be sufficient, rather than setting up complex company structures.
Transcripts
In this video,
I'm going to give you the five common mistakes I see beginner KDP
publishers make. And I see these all the time, whether it's no content,
low content or medium content books.
And these mistakes will stop you from making sales or worse still
get you account terminated.
So the aim of this video is to help stop you making these mistakes and therefore
help you get sales, protect your account,
and to concentrate on the most important aspect of this business,
which is creating and publishing books. Okay,
so mistake number one,
which is not creating enough books.
And I often get a message which goes along the lines of,
I created three books four months ago. I'm not making any sales.
Why? Well,
I see this message or situation being similar to someone who's got a
YouTube channel.
They've only created three videos wondering why they're not making any money. Or
someone with say a blog, posted three articles,
again wondering why they're not making any money. You see,
publishing KDP books is very similar to many other online businesses and it's a
numbers gain. Now, if you're new to this business,
there's going to be a number of skills that you're going to have to learn.
You have to learn how to create the books with tools like Affinity Designer,
Adobe Photoshop, or puzzle book tools like Book Bolt.
Then you've got skills to learn like keyword research,
how to optimize your books for those keywords and how to attract
customers with good cover designs. So,
when you're a beginner at this, you're going to make mistakes,
but also all these things are not going to come together to create a product
that customers are going to want to buy.
So my advice on this is that you need to keep
creating books, not just create a few sit back,
wait for sales to come in,
because early on your book's probably not going to be good enough. So you need
to create books,
with each one you need to create improvements on those books,
learn the skills required, and you need to cast your net wide. You see,
if you're only going to create two or three books and sit back,
then it may be that you're not going to make sales in that particular
niche.
And so you need to cast your net wide and create a larger number of books.
And the principle of the 80 20 principle often applies as well,
and it certainly applies to my KDP publishing business and that
the majority of your books,
you may only get a small number of sales or no sales at all,
and most of your income is going to come from a small number
of those books. And so if you're only creating a few books,
you're never going to get to that quantity where.
You've got that small number of books that's going to bring in all the income.
So you need to learn the skills,
cast your net wide and create a larger number so you can take advantage of that
80 20 rule. Now the next problem I see,
and that is picking a very competitive niche. Again,
a very common mistake made by beginners because they see these glamorous
niches that are making lots of money.
The problem is those niches are also very competitive.
An example of one of these niches would be something like coloring books.
Now the problem is,
unless you can create stunning looking books,
particularly stunning looking covers, know how to do your keyword research,
know how to optimize your books,
you will get lost within that competition and your books won't get seen
by customers, and so you won't be able to make sales.
Now a problem I see with beginners in these competitive
niches is that they decide to run an Amazon ad campaign
as well, usually on something like a $5 budget. Now,
there's nothing wrong with running an Amazon ad campaign,
but the problem is in this particular scenario,
you've probably not got the skills yet to create books that are going to sell
anyway. So no matter how much you spend on your ad campaign,
you're never going to get sales. And two,
something like a $5 budget on these sorts of niches is
not going to work at all. Some of these competitive coloring book niches,
you're going to need monthly budgets in the thousands of dollars. Now again,
there's nothing wrong with that.
If you've got books that are good enough to sell,
you've got the budget for those types of books and overall you're making a
profit on the campaign.
So my advice is start with those less competitive books,
and these are those books that a lot of people usually think are dull and
boring, and those are things like log books. And in fact,
these are my favorite types of books. They're easier to create.
You don't need any great design skills and there's less competition.
And so you can find early on in your publishing career,
you can start to get sales,
which is very encouraging when you are starting off.
But a lot of these books are also in evergreen niches.
So you can create a larger number of these books.
They may not bring in a lot of sales individually,
but altogether these usually add up. And in fact,
the major proportion of my monthly income comes from these
types of books. So now we come on to mistake number three,
and that is creating books that are too complicated. And again,
this often comes down to being attracted by those more
complex, glamorous bestselling books. Again, things like the coloring books,
kids puzzle books. And the problem is, if you jump straight into these books,
you're going to need to have decent skills to be able to create the interiors of
these books. So you're going to need to be able to use software like Affinity
Designer, Adobe Illustrator or puzzle creation software like Book Bolt.
But also there's other issues to consider,
things like whether your book has bleed or no bleed and how to keep content
within the margins.
And it's difficult to put all this together when you're a beginner. And again,
I often get a message saying, I've got this book, it keeps getting rejected.
What's the problem? And when you see the error message,
there's use your number of problems there,
and it's like trying to untangle a big knot of string.
So my advice on this is start simple.
Start with simple lined notebooks and journals. Therefore,
you get used to the whole creation and publishing process.
And then you can build on that by creating those log books and then eventually
get to those more complex books. And by the time you get to those more complex
books, you have built up greater skills to create books that customers
actually want to buy. Okay,
so now we come on to mistake number four, and this is a big one,
and that is trademark infringement.
I see this commonly with beginner publishers,
and I usually get that message saying,
I've created one or two books and I've had my account terminated.
And it doesn't matter how much you contact KDP support and
say that you're a beginner at this, you're sorry,
you won't make this mistake again. You won't get your account back.
And in worst case scenarios, you could end up getting sued,
which is what you don't want to do.
So what do I mean by breaching or infringing trademark? Well,
I have a simple rule,
and that is if it's an idea based on someone else's or some other
business's idea,
then there's a good chance you're going to infringe a trademark. And so I would
avoid that altogether.
And don't get obsessed by a particular idea that's based on someone
else's intellectual property. I see that commonly,
and I see it in things like Marvel characters, Disney characters,
well-known manga characters and things like vehicle logos.
There are so many ideas out there in which you can create books it's just not
worth risking your account because you want to create a particular type of
book.
And it doesn't matter also whether you've created the images
yourself. Either you've drawn the images, painted the images,
or you've used AI to create those images.
If they're based on someone else's idea or intellectual property,
there's a good chance you're going to infringe trademark.
You can also infringe trademark with words and phrases
as well, common things like Mickey Mouse or Ironman. So again,
avoid using these terms. Now,
if you do have a phrase or word that you're not sure
of, whether it is trademarked,
and what I suggest doing is going to the US site uspto.gov and
doing a trademark search there or to the World Intellectual Property
Organization website, wipo.int,
and again,
doing a search there. Now we come on to the last mistake,
and that is number five.
And this is something I call getting lost in the weeds,
and this is something that occurs before you've even created your first book.
Now remember a few years ago I offered to help out a group of people who
were creating and writing a book, and they wanted advice on publishing,
which I was happy to give.
But this soon turned into this complex situation where they wanted advice on
setting up a company, creating brand logos,
how to structure a marketing campaign,
how to create business structures and brands,
not only for the publishing company,
but for what would be the ensuing TV company and then the health retreat
company.
And this was before they'd even created anything to sell,
and it was getting so complex and it was going around in so many circles,
I just had to leave them to it and let them get on with it. Now,
I often get questions that are related to this, and again,
it occurs before someone's even created a book and it's how do I set
up my tax structure? How do I set up my company? Where do I set up my company?
Now, first of all, I'm not a financial advisor,
and so I'm the last person you want to get financial advice from.
And also asking some random guy on the internet is not a good idea if you want
financial advice either. But what happens is, again,
it becomes so complex and you don't quite know what to do,
and people spend weeks on trying to come up with what's the best way to
structure their business before even creating a book that they tend to end up
not creating a book altogether and forgetting about the business altogether.
So my advice on this is that you should keep
it simple. If you find yourself falling into these types of rabbit holes,
then just take a step back and it's quite simple.
There's just three basic steps that you need to consider. One,
setting up your KDP account, two,
creating your first book and three, publishing that first book.
And when you've done that, repeating steps two and three,
creating and publishing.
And then when you've got products to sell and you are making
sales, then that's the time,
probably the best time to start looking at getting professional advice if you're
thinking about tax structures or thinking about company structures.
For the majority of people, they probably don't need a company,
and for the majority of people,
all they need to do is just take that income that they're getting and just
declare it on their tax return. Again, I'm not a financial advisor,
and if you get to that stage,
I suggest do getting some financial advice,
but not jumping in before you've even created a book,
jumping into the expense of setting up these different company structures.
Now,
if you are at that stage where you've not yet created your first book or you're
having difficulty at doing so,
then I suggest watching this video here where I run through the steps of
creating your first lined notebook or journal and getting
it published on Amazon. Thank you much for your time.
It is very much appreciated. Don't forget to hit that subscribe button,
and until next time, and goodbye.
