[Music]

play00:20

we used to have a like church

play00:22

essentially a place where we went to

play00:24

remind us of the things we care about

play00:26

and it matter but many of us aren't

play00:29

religious today and we don't have this

play00:31

thing that we go to every week that sort

play00:33

of reminds us you know regardless of

play00:35

what uh your work conditions into you or

play00:38

what Society tells you like this is what

play00:39

actually matters to you and so in some

play00:42

ways uh mind form which is my sort of

play00:45

community platform it's a kind of uh

play00:48

secular Community or um you know you

play00:51

could call it a training gym for your

play00:53

mind it's a a membership platform

play00:56

designed around virtue and self-mastery

play00:59

and our values and our well-being and so

play01:02

I think having a community like that a

play01:04

place where you uh can connect with

play01:06

other people around these things that

play01:08

actually matter to you uh because

play01:10

there's not really another good place in

play01:12

modern society for doing that I think is

play01:14

really important but I want there to be

play01:16

a place that's almost like a a gym

play01:18

membership only it's a a gym for your

play01:20

mind where you can go and uh and connect

play01:23

with other people and have almost like

play01:25

uh group therapy sessions and and work

play01:28

on your uh your personal development and

play01:31

wisdom and these things that really

play01:33

matter but that uh you know haven't been

play01:36

built into our our economic systems as

play01:41

deeply I recently read how religion

play01:44

evolved um which makes an interesting

play01:46

argument on uh the communal functions of

play01:49

it and I've particularly focused when

play01:53

I've talked about religion on the

play01:55

psychological functions I I tend to

play01:58

Define religion as a technology and I

play02:01

think you can break up what that

play02:03

technology does into a few different

play02:05

components and you can see how uh it's

play02:08

evolved in a similar way to Technologies

play02:10

if you look at different sects and

play02:12

different religions through time and

play02:14

which ones have been preserved it's

play02:16

essentially those that serve the most

play02:18

psychological needs so you've got uh for

play02:21

example an afterlife component we

play02:23

naturally fear death we don't want to

play02:26

die and so the religions that have stuck

play02:28

around generally uh provide some

play02:31

function for putting you at ease about

play02:33

your own death whether it's because

play02:35

you're going to uh live in an afterlife

play02:38

or there's a karmic cycle of rebirth or

play02:40

whatever it is uh so that's one of them

play02:42

there's a community function of bringing

play02:44

you together with others uh right

play02:46

there's a like I can relax because it's

play02:49

all in someone else's Control Function

play02:52

and so there are a lot of a lot of it

play02:54

you can view as uh a technology that

play02:58

solves emotional problems that we

play03:00

naturally have and makes it easier for

play03:02

us uh kind of Comforts Us in some ways

play03:05

and I think uh in my work I'm I'm in

play03:08

some ways trying to address those same

play03:10

needs in a secular way and saying uh

play03:13

yeah we don't need that myth to address

play03:15

this there are other ways to become at

play03:17

peace with your own death we don't need

play03:19

an afterlife function we just need to uh

play03:22

address mortality and and help people

play03:24

wrap their heads around it so um what

play03:27

about the community element do you have

play03:28

a so I know mind for is its own how how

play03:32

much of a community is that or or what

play03:34

where does the emphasis on community

play03:35

come in uh I mean it is fundamentally a

play03:38

community but currently it's an online

play03:40

community in the future I would like to

play03:42

make it an in-person community and have

play03:45

uh essentially I like to think of them

play03:47

as as psychological health and fitness

play03:50

centers or community centers but you

play03:52

could think of them as secular churches

play03:54

as well they would be centered around

play03:56

actually getting together with people in

play03:58

person and working on personal growth

play04:01

and and Collective growth but uh so the

play04:04

so the community component I think does

play04:06

have to be addressed and right now we've

play04:08

got Zoom calls and uh comments and stuff

play04:11

but uh so more more stuff coming is it

play04:14

the same like how many people will be on

play04:17

a zoom call is

play04:18

there currently there's anywhere from

play04:22

like uh three to 50 I mean we've had

play04:25

some very small intimate ones we've had

play04:27

some that are uh intended to just be you

play04:29

know one-on-one conversations uh we've

play04:32

had others that are more like bigger

play04:33

events where uh there's one person kind

play04:36

of hosting and asking questions and

play04:38

discussion they both have pros and cons

play04:41

but and is it weekly is there a

play04:43

regularity to to meetings yeah I I host

play04:46

monthly uh events but there is another

play04:49

member who hosts weekly uh conversations

play04:52

that are a little more informal and um I

play04:55

always go when I can it's a ton of fun

play04:57

just getting to talk uh kind of like you

play04:59

and I are right now but in a group kind

play05:01

of community setting that's awesome man

play05:03

that's so cool and I've always like I've

play05:05

had this dream since I think I

play05:08

discovered philosophy at least since I

play05:09

discovered the Ancients that like I was

play05:12

like why are there not schools of

play05:13

philosophy like why oh yeah where the

play05:15

that go where where's the like because

play05:18

universities is not what it is you know

play05:20

what I mean this this this intellectual

play05:21

level it's just like no no practical

play05:23

philosophy like you demonia why are we

play05:25

not gathering together and trying to

play05:28

figure out how to live the best lives

play05:29

possible and figuring out what the

play05:31

is going on like that other stuff as

play05:33

well but yeah just and I I I had this

play05:36

dream of yeah just having fear workshops

play05:38

of just like Hey we're gonna just you

play05:40

freid of heights we'll put you up a

play05:41

ladder we'll measure you know just

play05:43

actually that matters and just

play05:45

having a university where it's like hey

play05:47

like at the end of this you won't come

play05:48

out with a piece of paper that says

play05:50

you're a specialist in this this

play05:52

one subject but you will whatever you

play05:55

apply yourself to in life after this you

play05:58

will Thrive at because you've gone

play06:00

through an education as a person rather

play06:02

than education in a subject um so

play06:05

learning how to swim rather than the

play06:06

theory of swimology so yeah I love that

play06:10

you're doing it um that is amazing um

play06:13

and I love the idea of you setting up

play06:15

physical things that's uh I just think

play06:17

the world needs that and I might be too

play06:20

lazy to do it so like I hope there's a I

play06:23

hope there's a a mind form gym opening

play06:25

up somewhere near me at some point

play06:27

because that's that's really cool um

play06:29

yeah well you you've very much described

play06:31

the the vision of Mind form thinking

play06:33

about Plato's Academy and that kind of

play06:35

stuff as is a big part of what uh kind

play06:38

of em this emerged from and and uh yeah

play06:42

it's funny you talk about like

play06:43

overcoming fear of heights because

play06:45

that's that's kind of what we're doing

play06:47

in the anxiety algorithm inside mind

play06:49

form and so uh it is you know early

play06:52

stages I'm hoping to be able to build

play06:54

these inperson centers uh before too

play06:57

long but yeah I mean the epicur and

play06:59

Garden too is another major like uh

play07:02

influence in my mind we need that we

play07:05

need a community that gets together and

play07:07

just has like great conversations with

play07:09

friends and um yeah so you say the Lum

play07:15

Academy element has been co-opted by

play07:18

University but it's hard to see the

play07:20

epicurian garden as being co-opted in

play07:23

that way because communes are closer to

play07:25

what the epicurian thing is than than

play07:28

universities but it's still still yeah I

play07:31

I just that IA it's funny we have all

play07:34

these other institutions sort of

play07:36

circling around it I feel like uh yeah

play07:38

the formal education system is kind of

play07:41

like adjacent to it Psychotherapy is

play07:44

adjacent to it religious church is

play07:46

adjacent to it a fitness gym is adjacent

play07:49

to it but it's only really centered

play07:51

around physical it's like where is the

play07:53

combination uh right at the center of

play07:55

all

play07:57

this I'll say I've I've got a platform

play08:00

called Mind form that in many ways is

play08:02

meant to be like the healthy social

play08:03

media platform and crucially it's it's

play08:07

subscription based and not Advertising

play08:08

based so it you know there's no

play08:11

incentive to just you know boost

play08:13

engagement and get people outraged and

play08:15

all that the incentive is to keep them

play08:17

happy and keep them wanting to renew and

play08:20

uh really serve their values rather than

play08:22

their strongest desires um but it will

play08:25

never be as profitable to serve values

play08:27

as it is desired

play08:31

I've long reflected on the

play08:32

medicalization of mental health I mean

play08:35

just saying that phrase it sounds very

play08:37

sterile and serious yeah and it's like

play08:40

okay well let's look at the equivalent

play08:41

in the physical health world right we've

play08:44

got Physical Therapy obviously which if

play08:46

you get injured you have you hurt a

play08:48

muscle or something then yeah you need

play08:50

to go to physical therapy right but you

play08:52

also can go and exercise you can do

play08:55

CrossFit and yoga or whatever uh even if

play08:57

you're not hurt well where is the mental

play08:59

equivalent of of CrossFit right or

play09:02

whatever it is and it's kind of like

play09:04

there's there's almost not one and so

play09:06

that's what is is behind psyit and that

play09:09

whole sort of discipline that I coined

play09:11

in my first book and then you know mind

play09:13

form is my version of a mental health

play09:15

gym essentially yeah no I think that's a

play09:17

great point I mean I love the idea of

play09:19

the kind of the mental Fitness Gym you

play09:20

know it's like it's you know you don't

play09:22

just go to the gym because you you have

play09:23

a a physical issue I mean usually

play09:25

wouldn't go to the gym at that point so

play09:27

it's kind of like let's let's let's be

play09:29

good to to kind of go there in the first

play09:30

place I think that's uh that's an

play09:32

important

play09:34

piece do you work oneon-one with people

play09:37

or do you work with them through the

play09:39

materials that you provide on your

play09:40

website I don't do any one-on-one work

play09:43

but I do have a private Community called

play09:45

mine form that is uh it's got all the

play09:48

programs it's got all these resources on

play09:50

it it's a paid membership it's

play09:51

application only um but the idea is to

play09:54

kind of provide a a community and and

play09:56

almost a mental Training Center like a

play09:59

you know we all have memberships at gyms

play10:02

for exercise of our bodies but we don't

play10:04

really have a place uh like a membership

play10:06

for our minds and so this is a community

play10:09

and a training platform for self-mastery

play10:11

and psych all kind of built into

play10:15

one now uh philosophy becomes a much

play10:18

more academic thing and school is

play10:20

centered around you being good employees

play10:23

versus being good human beings that are

play10:25

capable of being happy and giving back

play10:27

to the world so that's why I built you

play10:29

know mind form which is kind of a

play10:30

community centered around the good life

play10:33

yeah I think we need a a community

play10:35

particularly those who aren't

play10:37

necessarily religious right those who um

play10:40

yeah who who don't uh subscribe to a

play10:42

view that would really make sense for

play10:44

them to go to church and and something

play10:46

like that I don't want just anyone

play10:47

wandering in and and it's actually

play10:49

application only to Ure that we have a

play10:52

um a really high quality group who are

play10:55

you know have the right values and and

play10:57

focus and everything but um yeah there's

play11:00

a video on there that'll show you about

play11:02

it so well thank you so much for that I

play11:04

just want to make sure that our audience

play11:05

has all of the tools you know to to

play11:09

access your resources and really

play11:11

appreciate the work you're

play11:14

doing oh yeah yeah so mind form is uh

play11:18

it's currently an online community so

play11:20

I've got you know you have to apply to

play11:22

join but it's this really incredible
