Q & A
What has changed in the perception of coffee in recent years according to the script?
-The perception of coffee has changed significantly, with previous generations being told it could stunt growth, but now it's recognized for its health benefits such as aiding memory, mood, depression management, providing energy, helping the liver, and potentially assisting with diabetes.
What is the recommended way to roast coffee for maximum health benefits?
-Light roasted coffee is suggested to be better for health as dark roasting can reduce the benefits. The amount of caffeine is not dependent on the roast level but rather on how long the water is in contact with the coffee bean.
How does the method of brewing coffee affect the caffeine content?
-The caffeine content is influenced by the brewing method, with American coffee, which involves continuous water contact with the beans, having more caffeine than espresso, despite the latter's stronger taste.
What is the proper way to store coffee to preserve its freshness?
-Fresh coffee should be stored in a bag with a CO2 vent valve to allow air to escape, kept in a dark corner, and not refrigerated or exposed to heat, which can degrade its quality.
Why should we be cautious about the additives in our coffee?
-Additives such as non-dairy creamers can contain artificial ingredients and synthetic chemicals, which may not be healthy. It's recommended to use natural alternatives like milk or milk substitutes.
What is an example of a surprising ingredient found in some non-dairy creamers?

-The alternative suggested is to use old-fashioned milk and a teaspoon of sugar for a natural and healthier option, avoiding artificial additives.
Why might artificial sweeteners be problematic for weight loss?
-Artificial sweeteners, despite being sweet, can actually stimulate the body's desire for more sugar, leading to increased calorie intake and potentially weight gain.
What is the recommended sweetener to use in coffee according to the script?
-A little bit of regular sugar is recommended, as it provides only about 16 calories and is a more natural option compared to artificial sweeteners.
What is the view on the role of coffee in weight management?

What milk substitutes are suggested as healthier options for coffee?
-Milk substitutes such as almond milk and hemp milk are recommended as they can complement the taste of coffee and are lower in calories compared to non-dairy creamers with artificial additives.

☕ The Surprising Benefits of Coffee
Dr. Mehmet Oz discusses the surprising health benefits of coffee, countering the old belief that coffee might stunt growth. He mentions that coffee can enhance memory, mood, depression management, energy levels, liver health, and diabetes management. However, Dr. Oz raises the question of whether people are consuming coffee the right way and whether the type of coffee they drink maximizes these benefits.
🔥 The Importance of Coffee Roasting
Dr. Oz explains that while coffee is a great source of antioxidants, the way it's roasted affects its health benefits. Dark roasting, popular among many, can reduce the coffee's health benefits. Light roasting is recommended for retaining more of the beneficial properties. He also clarifies that the caffeine content is more about how long the water interacts with the coffee beans rather than the roast level.
🧴 Coffee Preservation and Common Additives
Dr. Oz emphasizes the importance of preserving coffee properly by storing it in bags with a CO2 vent and keeping it in a dark, cool place, not in the refrigerator. He criticizes the use of non-dairy creamers, which often contain synthetic chemicals and odd natural flavors, including castoreum from beavers. Instead, he suggests using natural milk or even alternatives like almond or hemp milk, which are healthier choices.
🍬 The Truth About Sweeteners in Coffee
Addressing the use of sweeteners in coffee, Dr. Oz advises against artificial sweeteners, explaining that they can confuse the body's natural processes and lead to increased sugar cravings. Transcripts
many of us as part of the morning
routine sitting down with our cup of joe
have we given thought to what's actually
in your coffee joining us this morning
to talk about the healthy coffee you
should be buying right now is a dr.
Mehmet Oz from the dr. Oz Show good
morning dr. eyes
good morning kita you know it's been a
big about-face on coffee a lot of folks
my generation were told what stunt your
growth but in fact it's pretty good for
memory actually helps with significantly
with that with mood with with the
depression management it gives you
energy helps your liver any with
diabetes and lots of other potential
benefits but the question is are we
drinking it the right way and are we
drinking the right coffee because those
sound like great benefits can I drink
any coffee and get those benefits well
what are the reasons coffee is so good
for you and again it's a number-one
source of antioxidants and I'm speaking
as the independent observer here because
I don't drink a lot of coffee personally
but I respect all the research has been
done on it when you have coffee that's
dark roasted with a lot of people like
you actually are roasting out the
benefits so I light roasted coffee is
probably better for you if you don't
mind and slowly make your way in that
direction and that's by the way the
amount of caffeine is not dependent on
how you roast it the amount of caffeine
depends on how long the water touches
the bean so if you're American coffee
where you got a percolator going
actually has more caffeine in it then
the expresso often does but that's not
the problem
the problems what we put in our coffee
and right now in our coffee especially
we don't preserve it the right way and I
like to do that you need to buy fresh
coffee it's perishable put it in one of
those bags where they have a little co2
vent a little valve that allows the air
to come out of it and don't put it in
the fridge put it in a dark corner and
don't expose it to that the heat which
is also denatures it but the problems
what we add to our coffee
so the non-dairy creamers i don't you
ever look on what's in your non-dairy
creamer but it's got all kinds of junk
in there it's you know it's got
something called cache theorem which is
listen carefully it's the scent gland
from a beavers buttocks what that's a
natural flavoring yes yeah believe it or
not I don't know how they figured that
out even that if beavers buttocks has
the same clan they might want to add to
your non-dairy creamer but in all kinds
of other stuff in there that's actually
more of a problem for me synthetic
chemicals odors since these 30 different
kinds of aromas can come out of these
non-dairy creamers I
suggest you put old-fashioned milk in
your coffee not too much of it and then
just a teaspoon full maybe a sugar which
only has about 16 calories to it don't
put artificial stuff in there just
regular old coffee with a little bit of
the stuff to make it more palpable to
you or if it darks better and you know I
am I'm always trying to watch my weight
I drink a lot of coffee because I'm up
early and I put the the sweeteners in
there whether it's the pink or the blue
or the yellow but you're saying that's a
bad idea and I should just go with
straight old coffee I would be concerned
about the calories in it but 16 well the
artificial sweeteners are dangerous for
you but then I'm gonna get you what you
want either Keenen because you don't
lose weight with artificial sweeteners
they're so sweet
but they blow your taste buds that your
body is very smart it knows but you gave
it a sweet taste in your mouth but it
didn't give it yet any sugar actually so
I tell you to go back and find more
sugar so again I suggest a little bit of
sugar listen the reason people gaining
weight is not because they had 15
calories of sugar in their coffee that's
not the problem it's all the other stuff
to eat and during the day it's the bagel
and the donuts are having with their
coffee so I would argue all-natural is
the best way to go that's why I'm
willing to take a little bit of calories
with with with milk rather than a lot of
other stuff that might people might add
with the non-dairy creamers or you can
use one of the milk substitutes I like
almond milk hemp milk a lot of these
actually go quite well with coffee but
pick something that you like doesn't
have a ton of calories in it but you can
do it every single day your body
recognizes that it's natural
so to digest it more readily thank you
very much and congratulations to you on
your Emmy win and congratulations to
your daughter for her Emmy win on the
doctors with also airs on channel 7
remember you cannot catch me night I was
such an honor I would say it's a great
honor wets any father to watch his
daughter get an award it was a much
bigger deal than me getting one so
thanks for your kind of work you're
you're quite welcome you can catch dr.
oz every day on channel 7 starting at 3
p.m. and of course you can catch Daphne
oz also on the chew at 1 p.m.
