Outlines
👑 The Benevolent Ruler's Downfall
In this paragraph, the speaker introduces the character of King Duncan from Shakespeare's 'Macbeth', portraying him as a 'Dumbledore' or 'Gandalf' figure, embodying the archetype of a great and benevolent father. However, the speaker argues that being good is not sufficient for a ruler, as Duncan's naivety and trustfulness make him vulnerable. The speaker suggests that a good ruler needs a balance of grace and strength, exemplified by the character of McDuff, who is a man of action. The paragraph concludes with the idea that Duncan's downfall was partly due to his lack of this balance, and it hints at the complexity of the play's themes, including the responsibility for Duncan's murder.

Good King Duncan the great father in his
positive aspect much beloved of all he's
a Dumbledore Gandalf figure of course
he's the benevolent father archetype
it's very very clear as we see from this
picture uh however it's it's not enough
simply to be good especially if you're a
ruler and again I I talk about this in
the theme video what what constitutes a
good ruler and it's not simply goodness
he's too trusting he's too naive he's
foolish he requires a tough nosed McDuff
who's a doer and not a thinker he's a
man of action the McDuff he requires
that McDuff to maintain his kingship to
balance Grace with muscle that's what a
good ruler requires to deal with the Bad
actors to deal with the McDonald's to
deal with the Macbeth's you need that
combination of powers and he didn't have
it and that's what led to his downfall
you could write an essay one of my
students wrote an essay once uh arguing
that who's to blame for uh for for the
murder of of Duncan it's Duncan himself
so here we go here's an example of his
naivete no more shall the Thane of
khador deceive our bosom interest
go pronounce his present death and with
his former former titled greet Macbeth
so the thing of Kato is not going to
fool me anymore here give macbethane of
cador he's not going to fool me right I
trust Macbeth right so Shakespeare's
Shakespeare depicts him as this kind of
hopelessly naive uh ruler as much as we
love him but he shouldn't be the ruler
of of a kingdom do you see he needs that
muscle now Malcolm is a different
creature Malcolm is a really good
balance he comes out as the as closer to
the ideal man and that was Shakespeare
