Transcripts
what's up everyone lance hedrick here
and today we're going to look at the
oria version 3 brewer
[Music]
all right so before we continue i'd ask
that you will hit that uh that subscribe
button below hit a like you know leave a
comment do do all that good stuff um and
check out the patreon below because that
stuff really supports this channel helps
me get equipment for these videos um but
yeah thank you so much for watching this
video clicking on it let's get into it
so this is the oreo made by my friend
jorya out in england um it it came
through a few versions first it was a
small little aluminum body then it had a
second generation with the same aluminum
body with a few tweaks but then he came
out with this plastic version and i
have abstained from making a video on
any of them because they they were good
um i just wasn't a huge fan this however
um is now my favorite flat bottom brewer
so it's made of a plastic which allows
it to have high heat retention which is
a huge plus for me the aluminum kind of
let heat go pretty easily so i'm a big
fan of plastic brewers i also like
double walled brewers but
this one is plastic so
this brewer has massive holes in the
bottom which disallows any of that
stalling that can occur in some other
flat bottom brewers like the kalita wave
or the stag x so this one because of how
big those grooves are there's real i've
not yet experienced a single stalled
brew on top of that horia has been very
open to a lot of suggestions i've made
over the past year year and a half
and one of them is that i'm not a fan of
frilly filters so
and this is something i have not been
shy about but frilly filters meaning
like this so whenever you have a frilly
filter in here water can pretty easily
bypass the bed makes that the brewing a
little bit more inconsistent coffee
grounds can get stuck stuck up in those
flaps and it just it's just not as it's
not as
predictable i guess so i think that i
was doing was taking trapezoidal filters
made by caffec and i was folding them in
a way to fit a flat bottom brewer but
that obviously was a pain in the butt
and so i wasn't brewing very often with
it because i just didn't feel like
folding it doing origami every day so
what jorya uh created based off i'm
assuming based partially off those
conversations is he created what is
called the negotiator and there is a 3d
file ready to be printed i'll put it
down below but essentially what this
does
if it's perfectly in the brewer like so
and then all you got to do is you can
get some lab filters these are some
filters that jory has been working on
and so i've been giving feedback on some
of these but we're going to take one
and i'll show you how this works
so we take
one of these circle lab grade filters
well this isn't lab grade like i said
this is
uh
one that jory has been working on but
you can there are ones you can buy that
are lab grade whatever i would look for
food safe probably but anyway so you
place it on top
then you're going to take the negotiator
and you're going to have a little
negotiation a little chat with the
filter you're going to go i want you in
there i want you to be pretty i want you
to be flush against the walls and boom
there it went
faster than you could blink all right
then you just kind of like twist it to
make sure those pleats those folds are
stuck and so as you see it's now folded
up against the sides all right now what
i like to do next is i actually like to
run it under a sink so that it wets it
against the wall so if when i pull it
out you see how it kind of comes out
with it so in order to make sure i have
it flat against the wall i run it under
water so i'm going to go do that and
i'll be right back in the blink of an
eye boom all right we're back i have it
wetted so now i can take the negotiator
out we're still dripping a little water
oh well i've got a rag
boom we got a rag all right so now what
you can see
is it's flat against those walls which
minimizes the potential bypass all right
so what this is going to allow me to do
is it's going to allow me to brew
without the fear of that bypass
happening so of higher concentration of
water going around the edges of the bed
which can kind of over extract those
edges leading to an imbalanced cup this
is going to allow a more even flow
through the bed of that water column so
i now have my hor my oreo made by horia
with the big holes in the bottom flat
bottom
filter
suction against the wall
lesson bypass and we're going to brew
with it so i've got water heated up to
210 degrees fahrenheit around 98 ish
celsius i'm just going to preheat this
brewer
all right any of that paper aromatics
can also be rid of with that hot water
so i'm going to go ahead and give this a
swirl then i'll dump that
all right so i've got 15 grams of ground
up coffee in here i ground it on the
finer side of medium anyway
i'm going to go ahead and do a brew
where i do my two minute bloom and then
i'm going to finish out the brew with a
second pour all the way up to 255 grams
so i'm gonna go ahead and brew that and
then we're gonna chat a little bit more
about this brewer as we start to taste
it all right so i finished pouring this
all out i did a 15 gram dose to 255
grams of water i did 45 gram bloom with
a two minute uh two minute wait period
there so that those grounds are fully
saturated and i poured all the way up to
255 grams did some swirling to kind of
flatten that bed out um but yeah during
this the the brewer itself doesn't
really get that hot because it's plastic
means it's retaining the heat inside
really well so i was able to grab it
swirl it around without burning myself
on top of that
it had a really fast drawdown even
though i was pretty aggressive with the
swirls because that bottom is just not
really going to clog those holes are so
big that even if they even if the filter
completely covers them there's still a
lot of exit area a lot of surface area
for this liquid to escape so you're not
really going to ever run into clogged
brews which is really nice so that water
column is able to easily pass through
that bed of coffee give us a nice even
extraction and honestly i could have
gone a lot finer this ran in just at
four minutes and with a two minute bloom
that means there's only really two
minutes when i did that 210 gram pour
all right so now this is done let's take
a look at the bed
let me make sure this liquid is out all
right we're going to take a quick look
at the bed
so as you see the bat beds nice and flat
we have some fines caught on the wall
and that filter is still snug up against
the wall so there is no
very minimal bypassing going on so we
should have a nice high extraction
that's really even
all right so now what i'm going to do is
take a refraction of this coffee so we
can have an idea of the tds and
extraction just based off of this quick
easy pour this is going to give us some
nice high extractions with a really
balanced body really balanced flavor
profile and so as opposed to the conical
style brewers that kind of give you that
that stratified extraction throughout
the bed as it kind of has some of that
partial extraction through partial
bypass this is going to give you more
even an even extraction through the full
bed being the flat bottom and having
lessened bypass with the filter that we
pushed around the edges
using the negotiator also i'm at it a
fun thing you can do is if you fill up
if you fill this up with water as you're
wetting the filter you can actually
weigh your beans in here afterwards has
a little bit of water droplets in there
a little automatic rdt for you so anyway
fun little hack all right so i'm going
to take a little quick measurement and
we'll be right back
all right so i just measured the tds of
this sample of this coffee we had it
right out of 1.4 tds which is a really
great drinking strength and so that gave
us right around a 20 extraction yield
and that was just with a quick two pour
uh brew now of course i could heighten
the temperature even more i could
pre-heat the brewer more i could go find
her on the grind setting and add more
pores to get an even higher one but for
a really easy without thinking about it
uh with a just a basic fellow ode
grinder i was able to get a really nice
high even extraction and we're going to
see how it tastes
delicious lots of white grape lots of
cocoa
there's a lot of nice malic acidity in
this cup
so anyway i've been a big fan of this
this brewer with the ease of placing the
filter in there especially with the
negotiator
i've been able to uh get the filter
prepped in just as about as much time as
i would a v60 or a kono so um i
definitely recommend you checking this
out if you're into flat bottom brewers
it has now become my favorite just
because out of the box it's ready to go
there's no modifications that have to be
done like i've drilled holes in my stag
x i've dragged i've drilled holes in my
kalita to make the holes bigger out of
that fear of stalling i don't have to do
that with this because that bottom is
massive so
i recommend checking this out
superior thermal stability to most other
brewers
it matches the stag x which is a double
wall brewer it matches it in thermal
stability has a faster flow rate
and it
and i love that the inventor of this
brewer created this little piece that
fits perfectly inside of here so that
you can use these style filters which
are just big circles so like i said you
can buy these online well not this
specific one you can buy lab grade
filters online though to use or or i
believe horia will be coming out with a
line of filters here soon at least i
hope so i'm assuming that's why i was
sent three samples to test out anyway
thank you for watching the video if you
have questions about the oreo v3 ask
below if you have any thoughts on any of
this i'd love to hear it love to chat
with you but uh until then i'm going to
be sipping on this washed honduras
because i brewed something tasting and i
hope that you brew something tasty today
and cheers
