Louise Payne introduces the Ideal Reading Skills Record Kit 3, a tool designed for educators to assess and monitor students' reading skills. The webinar aims to raise awareness about the kit's contents, rationale, and how it aligns with the building blocks of reading success. It covers how to administer, score, and analyze data from the record to inform teaching strategies. The kit is suitable for students at curriculum levels 2 to 4 and includes templates for various texts, a student copy of a story, and a blank record. Educators are advised on the frequency of administration and the importance of using unseen texts for assessment.
📝 Administering and Scoring the Reading Skills Record
This section details the process of administering the Ideal Reading Skills Record, including the preparation required, such as printing recording sheets and selecting appropriate texts. It emphasizes the importance of fluency, measured through a rubric assessing expression, volume, phrasing, smoothness, and pace. Additionally, it explains how to calculate oral reading rate and use it alongside comprehension questions to evaluate students' reading abilities. A demonstration of administering the record to a student reading a level 2 fiction text is provided, showcasing the marking process and subsequent questions to assess comprehension.
🔍 Analyzing Otis's Reading Skills Record
The analysis of Otis's reading skills record is presented, beginning with calculating his decoding score by subtracting the number of errors from the total words read. The accuracy percentage is then determined, followed by assessing Otis's oral reading rate and fluency using a rubric. Comprehension is evaluated through the correctness of answers to comprehension questions. Otis's scores indicate good accuracy but areas for improvement in fluency and comprehension. The information gathered from the record and in-class observations is crucial for determining the next steps in Otis's reading instruction, including the need for explicit teaching of comprehension skills and vocabulary.
🎯 Implications for Instruction and Next Steps
The final paragraph discusses the implications of Otis's reading skills assessment for his instructional reading. It highlights the importance of maintaining Otis's current reading level while focusing on explicit teaching to improve fluency and comprehension. Vocabulary instruction and strategies for locating information within the text are identified as key next steps. The paragraph also differentiates the use of Kit 3 for students reading authentic texts from the use of Kit 1 and Kit 2 for those reading decodables. It concludes with an invitation for educators to contact the Ideal team for questions and to explore additional resources and lesson plans.

the kit 3 contents page it also includes
a student copy of the story and a blank
ideal reading skills record as well
there are 24 ideal reading skills
records in total
teachers can select which ideal rating
skills record is appropriate for their
students depending on which level of the
curriculum they are working on
there are both fiction and non-fiction
articles and stories for teachers to
choose from
teachers can determine how frequently to
administer an ideal reading skills
record however we do not recommend
administering the ideal reading skills
record more than once per term
we recommend taking the journal articles
and stories that will be used for the
ideal reading skills record out of
circulation for instructional reading so
these can be used as unseen texts for
the ideal reading skills record
this kit also contains a blank ideal
reading skills record template if you
would prefer to use another text for
your students let's now delve into why
the ideal reading skills record was
developed
we now know more about the process of
learning to read There is a body of
research and evidence that clearly
illustrates the importance of Educators
identifying specific strengths and
challenges students are experiencing
while reading
This research highlights the importance
of assessing both language comprehension
and word recognition skills
the ideal reading skills record aligns
with research from the science of
reading and it supports the
implementation of a complete structured
literacy approach
the ideal reading skills record has
specifically designed to support
teachers with evaluating monitoring and
tracking the progress of reading skills
of the children in their class
it will also support teachers with
informing next teaching steps in their
classroom programs
the ideal reading skills record assesses
and directs teaching and learning in
each of the areas of the building blocks
of reading success and the components
that are assessed within the ideal
reading skills record align with these
building blocks
let's now like take a look at the
components that are assessed within the
ideal reading skills record in Greater
detail
as has broken glasses succinctly state
that fluency is defined as reasonably
accurate reading at an appropriate rate
with suitable expression that leads to
accurate and deep comprehension and
motivation
it is important that we assess these key
areas that lead to fluency and deep
comprehension
the first component that is measured in
the ideal reading skills record is
accuracy can the students accurately
read the text you're also able to get an
insight into the decoding strategy
students are using are they isolating
sounds accurately are they able to blend
the word back together
the second component that is measured is
comprehension each ideal reading skills
record includes a retail and four
comprehension questions to allow you to
check for understanding
the questions fall into the following
categories retail literal inferential
vocabulary evaluation and reaction
fluency is measured through scoring the
students off on a fluency rubric which
looks at expression and volume phrasing
smoothness and pace this is the
teacher's professional judgment on how
the students sounded in all of these
areas while they were reading it is
highly recommended that teachers become
familiar with the fluency rubric before
administering the assessment
the last component that is measured is
oral reading rate which is how many
words per minute a child can read
these reading rate Norms are from
Hasbrouck and Tyndall
and they can help indicate whether a
student's fluency growth meets year
level expectations or is increasing at a
normal rate
before administering the ideal reading
skills record use the kit 3 contents
page to determine which text is suitable
for administration
you will also need to ensure you have
the following ready you have printed off
the recording sheets you have a copy of
an unseen text for the students you can
either use a school journal or use a
copy of the student text provided with
this kit
and you have a timer
ensure you have read and familiarized
yourself with the text before
Administration and you have read through
the comprehension questions
we recommend taking the text that will
be used for the ideal reading skills
record out of circulation for
instructional reading so these texts can
be used as unseen texts
we will now watch a clip of the ideal
reading skills record Being administered
to a student who is reading a level 2
fiction authentic text
note how the book is introduced prior to
reading on the right you can see how the
ideal reading skills record has been
marked
now I will demonstrate how to administer
the ideal reading skills record cash 3.
this kit uses authentic Journal articles
we're going to be reading a article
today called nobody laughed which is a
legal to fiction
you can choose to either have the
journal and read the actual story from
the journal or alternatively you can use
the student text that is provided
So today we're going to read a little
article called nobody laughed when
you're reading you're going to notice
that I've got my phone here beside me
and I've got my timer working it will
make a noise but you don't need to worry
about the noise okay the second thing
that you might notice is that I make
some marks on my page as you're reading
don't worry about that either I'm just
working out what I need to do next to
help you with your reading and at the
end of the story I'm going to ask you
some questions about what's happened in
the story you'll notice we're only
reading quite a short piece of the um
actual story the story is a number of
pages so when we get to the end here
that's where we'll stop
so this story nobody laughed is about a
group of students who go back to school
for the first day after a big break and
Aiden who's the main character in the
story has been shopping in the school
holidays and he has bought himself or
his parents or whanau have bought him a
new bag
and when he gets to school and catches
up with all of his mates PC he see he's
not the only one that's got a new bag
okay are we ready to to get started with
our reading so the story is called
nobody La excellent and you can start
reading off you go I don't watch the
school with a spring in his book and a
bright green bird on his belt it was the
first day back after the summer holiday
or fun
so
greatly amazing
it's
stones
and
voice
gold
to himself he
overheard
in school and
he loves his new bed it was big but not
too big the perfect side
called books
is her lunch and kids
Secret
name
was waiting at the school gate but first
and they were assigned person telling
each other near holiday
stories so
tell us a new build
yeah
like missing
two for that
that related
didn't even notice they had the same bed
that's the thing about shopping at the
Big Bang
brunch
that
and um
and the same thing too
and Jason and William
and Jade
October
ciao
and
that
in turn
Plus
the day it was getting away
it would be a bit weird wouldn't it if
you tuned up and everybody had exactly
the same
so can you tell me what were the main
things that happened in this story
um
and what else can you tell me
um
foreign
what else happened
why did Aiden have a spring in his steep
I don't know you don't know it might
have been sometimes when we say he had a
spring and a step he might have been
excited because it was the first day
back at school what was inside Aiden's
bed
um
are you looking to see in the story what
was inside his bag I could see you
looking what was he keeping inside his
bag
foreign
why did all the kids have the same bag
not sure okay and what does the word
entire mean in this story
down here what does the word entire mean
and the entire thing
well done thank you so much for reading
with me today you did really really well
foreign
completed you will be ready to score the
ideal reading skills record
instructions for scoring can be found on
page 3 of the ideal reading skills
record
let's now look at scoring Otis's reading
skills record
the first area we will work out is his
decoding School
the decoding score can be calculated by
subtracting the number of Errors from
the words read in this case
Otis made five errors and he read 149
words so our calculation is 149 minus 5
which equals a decoding score of 144.
we then need to convert this into a
percentage to get us accuracy score we
can do this by using the decoding score
divided by the number of words times
100. so Otis's decoding score was 144
divided by 149 the number of words read
times 100 which gives us a score of 97
percent
to work out artist's oral read and write
we look at the number of words he read
after one minute of reading
Otis reads 69 words but he made two
errors in this one minute of reading so
we subtract the number of Errors By the
number of words read in one minute in
this case it will be 69 minus 2 which
gives us 67 words per minute
we use the fluency rubric on page two of
the ideal reading skills record to
determine Otis's fluency score we scored
Otis a two for expression and volume a
two for phrasing a three for smoothness
and a three for pace which gives us a
total of ten
to work out Otis's comprehension score
we divided the total number of questions
by the number of correct answers and
multiply this by 100
Otis did not get any comprehension
questions correct so he receives a score
of zero
let's now look at what this information
tells us about Otis's reading and the
implications for his next steps in
instructional reading
Otis had a good accuracy rate
students are deemed to have sufficient
accuracy when this score is 95 or more
the average reading rate for an
eight-year-old is between 83 to 112
words per minute although Otis's score
was on the lower side this will be
continued to be developed during reading
instruction and formally monitored and
consecutive ideal reading skills records
artists had a comprehension score of
zero percent
artists will require explicit teaching
of comprehension skills including
helping them to locate information
within the text and Retail the main
points of the story
Otis will also be explicitly taught
vocabulary word meanings comprehension
skills and strategies
artists received a fluency score of 10.
we would continue to monitor Otis's
fluency rate and fluency building
activities will be included during
independent activities as well as
instructional reading and spelling
from the information gain from the ideal
reading skills record an in-class
observations during instructional
reading time we can make a judgment as
to whether Otis is ready to move to the
next level for reading in order to build
Otis's fluency and for him to comprehend
what he is reading we recommend Otis
remains reading at this level
explicit teaching and unpacking of
vocabulary will be an important next
step to progress Otis's literacy
development
supporting Otis to reach retail Main
Events and to locate information within
the text is another important Next Step
